Busy busy busy.... Gots to find me a job. Time
for a quick update though.
I bet some of you out there used to play Cyberball... Here's
a site with strategy information, arcades that still have the machines,
and where to find your own machine. I swear I will have one of the
four person machines in my house someday.
I'm just about off to go to the dentist. I haven't been in years,
and I'm pretty much convinced that they're just going to tell me
that I'm going to need to have all my teeth pulled and start wearing
dentures. Well, I guess I'll have more time to adjust to them...
Better sooner than later.
My webcam shipped yesterday. It should be here before this friday,
and I'll get it going this weekend.
Well, time to go get those teeth pulled. Have a nice day.

I've been down most of the day trying to compile MySQL, then working
on mod_perl. MySQL is a no-go. I'll get mod_perl going, I think,
but it's going to take a while to compile, and I'll probably be
down for an extended period again.
I came within one click of buying a sweet new Dell
system while I was struggling trying to compile applications on
my crappy old 486. Once again, I chickened out at the last minute.
I'm still amazed that I can run a fairly decent web server on my
old 486, but I could do much cooler stuff if I could get my PII-266
to run my web server and still have a kick ass windows machine to
play Age
of Empires II. Oh well... Guess I'll get a new machine after
I move...

No update for a while. Gimpysoft received a generous donation of
memory today, so the server is going down for maintenance for while
today. Basically, I have a big box of unlabeled SIMMS, and I'm going
to spend the next 2-3 hours randomly inserting sticks of RAM trying
to find which pairs match, and then trying to find the largest ones
that will work in this machine. Before I take the machine down,
I wanted to record my uptime of 46 days. Not too shabby, and I'm
guessing that record won't be broken anytime soon for this machine
because, God willing, I'll be moving within the next 46 days.
Well, that was more painless than I was expecting. Didn't find anything
in the box other than 1 Meg sticks, so there isn't any net increase
in the RAM on the machine. But under the assumption that there was
actually some physically bad memory in it before, at least it has
all new RAM now. Guess I'll try to compile MySQL and see if it works.
Always just got a bunch of Bus Errors when I tried it before.

Ah yes... 3am, drunk on Busch and time to update the web page.
A pal just came over to watch some movies. I rented Magnolia, Ghost
Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Fight Club and The Professional. We
watched Ghost Dog first. It's the most recent movie by Jim
Jarmusch. He's directed a couple other movies, more
than I thought, actually... I'm a big fan of Night
on Earth. Anyway... Ghost Dog was a pretty decent movie. It's
about a modern-day hitman following the code of the Samurai. I think
Bill would like it...
We watched Fight Club after Ghost Dog. One of you good, good people
turned my TV off during Fight Club, and that marked the first time
somebody other than me was around to witness the magic of X10 technology...
He enjoyed it thoroughly.
Speaking of Fight Club, I finished up Survivor two nights ago. I
rather enjoyed it. Very intense. Read it.
After Fight Club was over, Chris took off, and I started to channel
surf, as usual... I was quite surprised to find Pulp Fiction on
god-damned TV. Not cable, but on our little mid-western NBC affiliate.
I don't think I've caught that movie on regular old TV before, and
it surprised me to find it there. Oh what has the world come to...
I also noticed that when I put the Big Smith songs up earlier I
completely forgot to post another of my favorites, 12"
3 Speed Oscillating Fan. Yet another gem from Big Smith... Buy
the CD from their
website if you get a chance...
Time for sleep now...

I just saw this,
and it frightened me. Please make that thing stay away from me.
I'm drinking Busch
tonight. It's an ugly, ugly time at the Gimpysoft ranch...
Big Smith
was a great show, as always last night. I've seen them out of town
a couple of times recently, but the Fayetteville shows are definitely
my favorite. The place was packed to the gills with folks dancing
and just having a good time. I did finally remember to ask the band
if they'd mind me posting a couple of songs, and the didn't have
a problem with it. If you like Bluegrass music, it doesn't get a
whole lot better than this. These are some of my favorites
off their newest CD. If you like it, you can always buy it at their
website. I'm not the most religious man, but their Gospel songs
are the best for dancing...

Ideas to End The Election Controversy:
- A Penis-Size Contest: Come on boys... whip 'em out...
let's see who's man enough for the job. My money's on Gore.
- Tetris: A marathon Tetris session. The candidates play
head to head for 24 hours straight. I'd go with Bush on this one.
I just figure he'd be better with the late nights.
- Perl Golf: Who can write a script to determine the twenty-five
most frequently occurring words in Leviticus using the fewest
charcters. Gore gets this one.
- Duel: No quarter will be given. Swords, I'd have to give
it to Bush. Gore just moves too slow. Handguns would have to go
to Bush as well. He is from Texas after all. Of course, there
is always the added bonus that both candidates could be mortally
wounded.
- Rube
Goldberg Contest: Each candidate designs and builds a
machine which will punch a chad out of a Palm County ballot in
30 or more steps. Points are awarded for creativity. Machines
must complete the task (at least two corners of the chad dislodged)
in order to qualify. A vote for Pat Buchanan disqualifies the
machine. Gore gets this one as well.
- Hot
Dog Eating Contest: 30 minutes. 1000 hot dogs. All hot
dogs must remain in the body. Bush by a hair.
- Extended court battle: doh...

Didn't finish up the Episode guide for episode 4. I got sleepy,
and MTV was playing some live Radiohead. Thanks to whoever kept
turning my TV off during that, but it didn't work that time. I was
quick on the draw, and didn't miss more than about 15 seconds each
time.
In other Gimpysoft.com news, my camera and switches are a bit delayed.
Apparently X10.com
just put a new ordering system in place, and they're apparently
having some problems. I placed my order last Friday. On Monday,
I got an email saying that my order couldn't be shipped because
I don't live in the United States or Canada. Now, of course my first
thought was that Arkansas had decided to secede from the union,
but after a quick search on CNN.com,
I discovered that that was not the case. So I called them up, and
they told me that apparently I had typed something wrong, and he
would have to place a new order. About 30 minutes later, I received
another email saying that they had mistakenly sent out emails to
customers telling them that there was a problem with the country
they lived in. Yesterday, I called them back just to check to make
sure the order was still valid. They told me that they expected
to ship it yesterday. About 30 minutes after that call I received
another email apologizing for the ordering problems, and assuring
me that all orders would be shipped by next Monday. Also, this email
notified me that they had double billed several customers, and that
the problem would be fixed. Sure enough, I checked out my bank's
website, and my available balance had shrunk by double the amount
it should have. Ugh. Well, I guess it'll take a little time before
the webcam is up.

The
job search ramps up again. I'm starting to make some phone calls,
and telephone interviews are beginning to come in again. I'm talking
with a couple of recruiters out of New York, and I had a phone interview
with a bank yesterday. The position sounded mainly like a support
position, but it would be actually working on the trading floor. Sound's
interesting, but I'd really like to stay on the development side.
I just got a call from another recruiter who is going to run my by
a couple other financial firms in the New York area. I guess people
really do use Perl in the real world. :)
In addition to the New York area, I've started to get in touch with
some people in the Boston and Austin areas. Most interestingly, I
applied for a job with Bose
in Framingham, MA. I do hope to hear back from them... that would
just be too sweet. Tomorrow is Chicago and California day, but my
main focus is still mainly on the New York area. But I suppose living
in LA wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I was just watching a bit of Billy
Madison, on USA. It's edited oddly. In the scene where Billy
calls Steve
Buscemi to apologize, when Mr. Pink goes to cross Billy's name
off the list of people to kill, the words "People to Kill"
are edited out. Weird. OK, I'm going to stop watching TV now. Has
anybody seen Little

Early
Evening Update: Well, I guess that little work on the site turned
into a major revision. Still nothing too terribly original, but
at least I'm no longer completely ripping off memepool.
Hope you like the new layout, all five of you...
Early Afternoon Update: I did a bit more work on the site,
and I hope to have it fully working under Netscape before too much
longer. Some stuff is not displaying correctly under Netscape, but
what else is new. I'm trying out this fancy HTML editor now, and
getting used to it a bit. I guess the idea is that if I can get
used to using this little deal, it will be easier to update the
site, and I'll do it more often. Can't wait to get the webcam up
here. And I'm sure you guys can't wait for the chance to be able
to watch me sitting in my living room watching TV.
I did make some server changes recently, and I'm in the process
of updating all the old pages so they use the same left navigation
bar.
After a week of poor social interactions, I actually had quite a
good time last night. On Friday, I went with a friend to see the
Yonder
Mountain String Band. They were playing at George's, which is
a club here in Fayetteville with an inside area and a back patio.
The String Band was playing outside, and it was damn cold. They
did have a lot of space heaters out there, and it did help, but
still damn cold. I spent a lot of time inside watching Sunday Driver,
a pretty good cover band around here. But while I was outside watching
the YMSB, I ran into a friend of a friend that I was thinking about
asking to go to Tahlequah last weekend. Luckily, she had other plans
for that night. But she did cruise out with me to see the show last
night, which was a blast. It was at a little place called Granny's
Attic, which was absolutely packed to the gills. I never got
a look out front, but some of the people I was hanging out with
tried to go outside to get some air at one point, and were told
that if they left, there wasn't any guarantee that they would get
back in as there was a big crowd out front who showed up after the
place filled up.
Anyway, we got home at about 3:30 am, and I went right to bed.

Well, I've finished up the Episode
guide for Young Pups Episode 1. Hooray for Photoshop filter effects.
This website now has 266.67% more graphics than it did before. Eventually,
all the links on the left will be to episode guides, but I am worn
out after doing that one. Dear lord... worn out after working on a
web page. I guess I need to exercise
more.
Well, I apparently can't
read. That clearly states that Big
Smith are in Tahlequah, OK this weekend, not last weekend. So
I'm heading out tonight to see them. Should be fun. I really will
ask about mp3s on the website this time. If they're there.

I'm sick of this.
Next Friday, all the overseas ballots will be in in Florida. If this
damn election isn't over by then, I'm going to be very upset.
It's bad enough that the presidential campaign starts two years before
the election. It used to be that you could count on at least one year
of the normal posturing, infighting, and lack of action on the part
of the government before the next campaign began, but now it doesn't
look like this one is ever going to end. I guess my biggest problem
is that I consume too much news. I listen to NPR all day at work,
then I come home and watch Fox News all night. (Hey, turn
my TV off, will you?) And it doesn't do anything but piss me off.
Taxes keep going up, more people get put in prison, and all the two
big parties will do is fight over minutiae. I almost wonder if either
party would know what to do if they actually got voted into power.
I guess I'm hoping that when this whole thing is over, Bush ends up
winning. We'll have a (admittedly by a slim margin) Republican congress,
and a Republican president. We'll probably end up with a tax cut,
and I don't really think that's a bad thing. If we allocate all the
money we have in the surplus to new programs, the next time they decide
we have another crisis, they'll have to raise taxes again. I'd like
to see it swing the other way for a bit. But on the other hand, Republicans
scare me. The thought of Roe v. Wade actually being overturned is
a bit frightening. But I guess I don't actually think that that would
ever happen. I certainly hope that Bush doesn't decide that the only
reason drugs are still around is that we don't have enough people
in prison.
Innocent people
are starting to be killed in drug raids. And nobody in government
is willing to say that maybe, just maybe, we ought to start spending
more money on treatment and less on law enforcement. Blah... I'm going
to stop talking about politics now.
I finally bought myself a webcam.
Along with the camera, I bought myself two wall switches, so
as soon as this stuff is in, not only will you be able to turn my
TV off and my living room lamp on and off, you will be able to control
two other switches in my house. I'm thinking they're going to be the
overhead lamp in the living room, and the kitchen light. Other options
are the bathroom light, my computer room light, and my bedroom lamp.
Email me
if you have a preference. And finally, you will be able to see that
yes, when you click on those links, it does actually make the stuff
in my house turn on and off.
It is Friday now. As of tonight, three out of three of the plans I've
made with people this week have fallen through. What I am going to
do now is go to George's, watch some bluegrass, drink some beer, and
look at cute hippy-chicks. See you there.
For the linguist/perlmongers among us, a
case for a more Latin-like syntax in Perl.
While you're at it, it's always fun to check out the winners of the
Obfuscated
Perl Contest. |

I guess it is technically past midnight. I need to learn style sheets
so I can get those links for Young Pups to be the right color.
I've always been a big fan of The
CIA's Home Page for Kids.
I'm looking at the stats, and I really need some .orgs to visit.
It's snowing in Arkansas... This rules.
There are problems with the Young Pups box on the right in Netscape...
One of these days I'm going to have to learn how to design web pages.
I need Therapy.

Late Evening Update! I just encoded Young
Pups Episode 1. Watch Young Pups in all its primitive glory. This
show was edited on a primitive linear editing system, and we didn't
know the first thing about sound levels, apparently. As far as copies
of Episode 1 go, I think this is a pretty good copy. The sound in
the intro is horrible, but it gets slightly better after the opening
credits. This episode includes the first appearance of Dr. Science,
Glaii the Ramen Monster, and one of my favorites, X-Schlager... Plus,
and perhaps more scary than anything else, me without facial hair.
Check it out... If you dare!!! Ummm... yeah... *cough*
Later Evening Update. I got ambitious and decided to capture
the rest of the shows. Episode
2 and Episode
5 are now available. I'm capturing some stills from the shows
to hopefully make an episode guide one of these days. I would be most
appreciative of any text that any former cast members would like to
post describing shows, behind the scenes action, descriptions of inside
jokes, etc. If you're bored. Anyway, I think it's getting to be bedtime
for me. Happy President Day tomorrow everybody!

Sweet baby jebus... I am quivering with distrustful anticipation of
finding out whether we get a moron or a liar as our next president.
Unfortunately, Nader didn't make 5%. No legal weed in Alaska. I'm
tired. I'm going to head in to work now.
OK, I just got in to work, but I'm early, so I think I need to post
some further election tidbits.
In the reasons I need to move out of the south department,
Alabama had a law on the books banning interracial marriage. They
voted in this election on a constitutional amendment which would repeal
this law. Granted, it did win. But it did win in a disgustingly close
race. Morning Edition gave it a 60%-40% win this morning, and CNN
was calling it at 59-41. One of the drawbacks of the secret ballot
is that you can't figure out who to shoot coming out of the polling
place. 40% of the state still thinks that interracial marriage should
remain illegal? Can we build a wall around that state?
I've given this some thought, and I don't think anybody should be
able to run unopposed. Put a yes/no item on the ballot, and if no
wins, eliminate the guy and hold an all new election. Well, time to
get to work. |
11.7.2000 |
Late Afternoon Update: I just got back from voting. Probably
the race that had me most excited about voting was Arkansas District
3, where I had hoped to be able to vote against Asa
Hutchinson, the homophobic religious-right wacko congressman that
currently represents me in the House. Unfortunately, he was running
unopposed. I wish I had known that... If I had, I would have made
sure my name was on the ballot opposing him.
Why didn't anybody ever tell me about
this?
I just found out my intern is a Minnesota
Vikings fan. Poor bastard. But Jesse
is too, so I guess I can't hold it against him.
Go Vote.
I had a lazy boring weekend. On Saturday, I woke up at 6am and played
Age Of Empires against folks in Europe. I won a couple of games. I
got tired of playing, so I set out to do something that I haven't
done in quite a while. I went shopping for clothes.
Now, I know it's a big stereotype that guys don't like shopping, but
I hate it with a passion. But I'm still wearing the same
clothes I've had for years, and it's just time. We have a fairly
new Old Navy in town, and all I needed was a couple new long sleeve
shirts, and some boxers. Everything seemed fine as I was pulling into
the parking lot, but I could feel my blood pressure rising as I approached
the door. Once the door opened, and I was assaulted by that sub-Spice
Girls dance crap the panic rose to a fever pitch. I went in, and fortunately
didn't have to look long before I found the boxers. Plenty in my size,
so I grabbed a handful. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out if the
section I was in was womens or mens as far as shirts go. All their
crap looks the same. After wandering around for as long as I could
stand it (it must have been at least three minutes) I decided that
Old Navy didn't have any shirts that I'd want to wear. So I got in
line (never enough checkout lanes open here) and waited to check out.
I then headed over to the mall... There was a Razorback game going
on in town, and I'm not sure if the mall was busy because of all the
extra people in town, or if it's just always this busy at 2:00 on
a Saturday. Normally I'm just crawling out of bed around that time.
Anyway, it was quite busy at the mall. I don't know how often this
happens to anybody out there, but sometimes I'm just out doing whatever
the hell it is I'm doing, and I see people and want to punch them
in the face. This seems to occur more often when I'm trying to work
my way around a crowded JC Penney with little kids running under my
feet and Christmas music on already... But I did manage to find a
nice shirt. I should have bought some more (I wish it was easier to
find straight black button up shirts), but I just knew that if I spent
another five minutes in that store I would have a complete mental
breakdown.
So I went to Hooters, had a beer, had some wings, and listened to
Arkansas get stomped by Old Miss. I then went home, refreshed and
renewed, and ready to take on the challenges of the day. I made some
last ditch efforts to get someone to join me for the Big
Smith show in Tahlequah, OK, but no progress was made. So at around
6:00 I headed out. The drive to Tahlequah is really pretty nice. During
a nice dark, curvy section of the road I found a Tulsa classic rock
station that played the last three songs of Dark Side of the Moon,
followed by Comfortably Numb. By the time I pulled into town, I was
all ready for a show. It took me a bit to find the place, but I did
find it at around 8:30. It wasn't open yet, but I had gotten there
earlier than I had expected to, so I had some dinner at the diner
across the street. I then commenced to walk up and down the street
in Historic Downtown Tahlequah. There really isn't much to this city.
At about 9:30, Granny's Attic finally opened, but the two extremely
cute bartendresses said they didn't know anything about a show tonight.
Well, I was perplexed. So I drove around for a while looking for any
other clubs that they might be playing at, but there really are only
three clubs in the whole town. Before giving up, I headed back to
Granny's Attic just in case the cute bartendresses were wrong about
there not being a show, but I walked in on a bar full of frat boys
singing along to The
Devil Went
Down to Georgia. I went home.
Saturday night I had a strange dream. I had moved to New York, and
was in a candy shop down the street from my apartment. There were
a lot of women my age in the store buying candy. A large man came
in and began going through the women's purses and taking their candy.
I asked him to stop, and when he ignored me, I sucker punched him.
The owner of the candy store spoke in a Maine-old-man-in-a-Stephen-King-movie
accent and said, "Son, that's not how we do things around here...
Do you challenge him formally?" "I do," I replied. He then told me
to return to the store on the following Saturday for the trivia contest
and the fight. All the girls were hanging out with me by now, mostly
to tell me to call it off because I was going to get killed in the
fight. And I was, there was no doubt about that. While I was walking
around terrified of this coming Saturday, the guy kept finding me
and telling me just how he was going to hurt me before he killed me.
I remember talking to friends out of state on the phone, and them
reminding me that people just aren't very nice in New York City, and
I should have known that when I moved up there. Finally, saturday
arrived. Before the fight, we played NTN
trivia. I stomped him at that, but it didn't change the fact that
he was about to tear me limb from limb. As a matter of fact, I really
don't know why we were playing trivia at all. But after that was finished
up, we went out into the yard behind the candy shop. About 60 people
formed a circle, and the large man and I were put into it. Then I
woke up. Dammit... how fucking anti-climactic...
Sunday I watched some movies and the Simpsons.
My god!!! Did you see that catch at the end of the Green
Bay - Minnesota game last night? Amazing. Favre is looking
a lot better than earlier in the season, too. Go
Pack...
And Go Vote. |

Big Smith
is in Talequah, OK this Saturday. See you there. If I get a chance,
I'm going to ask the band if they mind me posting some mp3s to the
website. If they're game, I'll put some of my favorites up here.
Also coming soon, Young Pups Episodes 1 and 2. If I don't end
up going out tonight I'll do them up this evening. Hopefully I'll
have all the shows up by this Sunday.
George W. got busted for DUI.
I have no comment. I'm still not
voting for him.
Disinformation
recently did up a nice dossier
on Radiohead.
It includes links to all my favorite fanboy sites and some reviews
of Kid A. Kid A definitely is different from what the band has done
in the past, but I'm kind of getting tired of the descriptions of
the album as either revolutionary or career suicide. For god's sake
people, using some systhesizers is just not bold and shocking anymore.
All four of Radiohead's albums so far have had their own distinctive
sounds. Umm... I was trying to make a point, but I've forgotten what
it is. Oh yeah.... It's just a fucking CD. A pretty good one, and
different, but please...
Anyway, I guess I'd better get to work... I'm wasting all the extra
time I earned for myself by getting up early this morning. Enjoy your
respective days and thanks to all the folks who have been turning
my TV off. |
11.1.2000 |
I guess October was actually a somewhat productive month, at least
as far as this website goes. I'll get more shows up this weekend,
and hopefully make some changes that will make things more consistent
across the multiple pages that this site is now starting to include.
Since it is a Wednesday, and her column was pretty good today, I'd
like to point any bored readers of my site to my favorite thing on
the web... If anybody's ever followed my links to Suck.com,
you may have seen their daily essays. These essays can be sometimes
excellent, sometimes mediocre, and lately I haven't even finished
reading some. However, on Wednesdays they run a comic called Filler,
which I have never missed a single instance of. (I started reading
it about a year after it started up, and have since read all the archives.)
If you've checked out Suck
and aren't into the essays, check out Filler. I rather liked today's,
especially with the gratuitous Radiohead reference. |
