Google calculator is nifty. Dave and I were dicussing the gravitational constant, and neither of us could quite remember what it was. (The big-G one, not the earth-specific one -- that we knew.) So I asked google for "G". Then, because it amused me, I asked it for "mass of the earth times G divided by (radius of the earth)^2". It worked. Dude! | Tuesday, February 1st, 2005 | 9:08 pm |
Superbowl Party Reminder As most of y'all know, dphilli1 and I are throwing a Superbowl Party. Just wanted to remind everyone. RSVPs are appreciated (if you haven't already), so I know how much food to get. Food contributions are welcome as well -- I'm planning on making pizza and sundry desserts. We have two cats -- medicate accordingly if you need to, and we'll vacuum again before the party. If you don't know how to get to our place, let me know, and I'll give you directions. (I'm not putting the address in a public post, though.) | Tuesday, September 21st, 2004 | 10:42 pm |
Boston-area folks: FYI So, last week and this week I dragged myself to the Cambridge Scottish country dancing class/social (which has relocated to Medford, but still calls itself the Cambridge class). It is substantially less old than previous reports indicated, so people should come dance! (Also, apparently I was doing skip-changes all wrong. Gah! Changing four years of foot-habits is non-trivial. Why didn't someone point this out earlier?) | Wednesday, July 7th, 2004 | 6:19 am |
ow. Do I really have to fly to california today, sick as a dog? I hope not. But I have the laptop of information, and thus must at least go to the airport bus to give it to my boss. And convince someone at the company that I'm really too sick to fly. Current Mood: sick | Monday, June 7th, 2004 | 7:21 pm |
back in the land of Massholes You know you're driving in Boston when the guy giving you the finger for not going enough over the speed limit is a cop. Gah. That was really strange. Capsule version of the story: I was in the fast lane, speeding but going with traffic. Notice cop gaining on me in the rear-view, and thus start trying to pull over to the left via slowing down to merge behind the car that's currently directly beside me. I didn't know if he was pulling me over for speeding or just trying to get past me -- the latter turned out to be the case -- he was on his way to help with an accident several miles up the freeway.) Grr! Stupid Walden closing at some time before 7:20. Guess I'll have to just haul ass tomorrow morning, even if it's raining, because I've got a new watch, and a new swim cap, and no excuses. Grrr. Or something.
(I'm hoping to do the Against the Tide swim in Hopkinton end of June, and I haven't been swimming in a while. Chlorine gets on my nerves a lot more now than it used to, and thus I've been waiting for warm non-rainy weather. And then I end up running late at work on a beautiful day.)
[Edit: I know the *pond* is still there at 7pm. But the parking is not, which was the problem. And I was worried about swimming at sunset. Sadly, it was raining at 6am this morning. Double Grr, but it's supposed to be nice tomorrow.] | Monday, April 5th, 2004 | 1:52 pm |
Easter If I have a potluck dinner on Sunday (Easter), would anyone show up? I'm happy to cook passover-kosher (dairy). I'm not religious, really, but it feels really weird to celebrate Easter only by eating a few Cadbury Creme eggs.
Thus, anyone who can see this is welcome to come to Easter supper, but let me know (so that if there are no RSVPs, as this is short notice, I don't make a lot of food). Earlyish dinnertime -- maybe 5-6, by preference, but let me know if you have a time preference. | Friday, March 12th, 2004 | 12:33 am |
I haven't gotten any email since Friday. Including spam. Wonder what broke? (Almost all of my email goes through a forwarding address (or two), so I think the forward has broken.) In the odd event that any of y'all out there are trying to reach me, don't use email.
[Edit: or send it to my SCCS account, since I just changed the .forward there.] | Tuesday, March 9th, 2004 | 9:08 am |
ow note to self: Just because you got a new DDR game doesn't mean you should play it for three hours straight. Especially when you'd planned to go to Tech Squares the next night. My evening plans are hamstrung. Right hamstring, to be precise. Stupid ACL. (I'm missing half my ACL in that knee -- since my hamstrings are the compensation, I don't horse around with a pulled hamstring on that knee.) meme spreading Coolest Vocab Test Ever, yanked from shimmeringjemmy. It's a neat concept: gives pairs of words, and asks you to pick same or opposite for them. While they aren't always exact synonyms/antonyms, if you know what both mean, the choice is clear. There will be many places where you only know one of them, unless your vocabulary is really impressive. (166/200 for me, just like shimmeringjemmy, though I'd be frightened if it were the same 166.) | Tuesday, February 24th, 2004 | 9:23 pm |
hello, internet kiosk Flight simulator tests went well, though the bloody rudders are still being big dorks. Now --> dinner at surprisingly decent indian restaruant ---> sleep. Home tomorrow. Happy Mardi Gras, everyone. | Sunday, February 22nd, 2004 | 11:00 pm |
gratuitous poll Okay, so I probably won't see y'alls answers to this before Ash Wednesday, as I will be in transit and not email-enabled. But I'm still curious... And I've never written an LJ-poll, so here goes. Poll #252714 Lent Poll
Open to: All, results viewable to: AllWhat should I give up for Lent this year? Are you giving up anything for Lent? Do you think I'm a rampaging nutcase for celebrating honoring Lent even though I'm not, nor ever have been, any form of Christian. pitch? Yay for unexpected holidays. Forgot all about it being President's day until last night, and thus went to work at 10 (the latest we're allowed to show up) to discover that, indeed, we had the day off and the doors were still locked. Woot. Okay, so I got my old violin back out. For kicks, I decided to see how close I could tune it to what it's really supposed to be. Picked something that sounded reasonable, and started going. Kept feeling it was a bit flat, but I wasn't sure, and I didn't want to tune it too tight, since it's been detuned for at least 2 years. Especially when I realized partway through that the bridge was almost a centimeter off-center. Oops. Slid the bridge back, and kept going. When I was done, I still felt it was too low, but couldn't find anything that felt better by going up a note or two, so left the "a" as-is. Got on the 'net and found a 440 Hz mp3. Yeah, it was several notes higher than my "a", so I fixed the a-string. Then decided to see how far it was off, by sliding my finger up from 4th position on the d-string (4th on the d produces the tuning a, if the d-string is correct). Kept going until precisely when my finger hit the only tape marker left on the violin (I pulled the others off when one got sticky years ago and I thought I was ready to give up that learning crutch. Wish I had 'em now). Wacky. I didn't manage to hit the 440 Hz a, but I'm pretty sure that's a 7th position tape, as it's just shy of the octave-harmonic spot. So I managed to tune the darn thing exactly a third low, and knew it was low, though couldn't figure out exactly how low, and going up "a note or two" made it worse. Okay, I'm slightly freaked out now. Seems the hours I spent trying to learn to have decent pitch actually had some effect. I still can't sing a pitch worth a damn -- heck, I couldn't even listen to the 440 and then sing it. But I could play it. memo to self, mostly I feel like I'm 16 again. This is strange. And somewhat disconcerting. Also, memo to self: actually write down those weird things that have been percolating in your brain the past few days. Like take some actual time this weekend and ponder. Maybe even put them in LJ, or in your little green book that hasn't had anything new written in years. Because, really, you never know when you're going to feel 16 again, and you might as well make the best of it. Whee! Food! Just got back from shopping for the superbowl party. Memo to self: shopping while hungry leads to buying too much cheese, even if you have a grocery list.
I'm making french onion soup, pizza, low-fat apple-spice bundt cake, and sweet potato fries. I bought chips & salsa & guac, as well as crackers and froufrou cheese. And ice cream, and Guiness. And soda & plastic plates.
People are encouraged but not required to bring food.
And they had mylar superbowl balloons at the grocery, so our mailbox will be marked for the few people coming who haven't been here before.
Let me remind everyone: people are welcome to show up anytime after 5. Dave will be picking people up at Somewhere over the Bike path at around 5 -- there's probably room for another two people, so if you need a ride from Somerville, that's the best way. Kickoff is at 6:30 -- people need not like football, but I will be watching both the game and the commercials. :)
We have two cats. We can shut them away if necessary, but we can't fix the fact that there's cat dander on the furniture.
If you need directions, reply to this entry, or check the friends-only entry that I posted today as well. (If you can't see the friends-only entry, then I'm a dork and haven't noticed you have a LJ. That should be fixed!) | Sunday, January 18th, 2004 | 1:01 pm |
Pats going to the Super Bowl! Yay, Patriots won the AFC championship! What a fun game to watch.
Also: reminder: we're having a potluck Super Bowl Party. We'd like RSVPs (comment on this entry, email us, or call us) with a tenative list of what you'd bring as food -- food isn't required, but is requested.
The game starts at 6:25 (edit: on February 1st) -- people are welcome to show up any time after 5pm.
P.S. We have two cats, just FYI. | Monday, January 12th, 2004 | 1:35 pm |
a grammatical kitchen Today is a day of much report-writing and polishing at work. The two co-workers I'm writing this report with are not native English speakers. They're both fluent, but there's occasionally some odd word and grammar choices. Which leaves me wanting a set of article shakers. Like salt and pepper shakers, only filled with definite and indefinite articles. Then, I could just take the report, add a shake or two, blow the extra ink off the cover, and be done with it. | Wednesday, December 31st, 2003 | 11:28 pm |
ok, this is pathetic I've never been just sitting alone at the new year -- this is rather sad & lonely. Granted, I'm quite sick, and would be miserable at a party, but it's still kinda eerie sitting here alone. Guess I'll turn on the TV in a few minutes? This is just odd. Current Mood: lonely | Friday, November 7th, 2003 | 10:22 pm |
you say you want a revolution... Best parts of the Matrix Revolutions: 1. Keanu Reeves is still hot. 2. There was this trailer -- it started with something about a queen in ancient times and betrayal. Dave said "Cleopatra?". Then it panned to a ship, and my brain went *oh dear me, they aren't, are they?*. And then it panned back to show a few more ships, and I knew. And then it panned back further, and there were a thousand ships on the water. So I spent the rest of the movie wondering how they're going to interpret it. And being amused that after they flashed the cast list, I matched up the only names I recognized without them saying who was who. (Brad Pitt = Achilles, which was obvious with the top billing. But I did call Orlando Bloom as Paris, 'cause Paris has to be pretty. Dude.) I just hope they make it more about Achilles's honor than any junk about loving Briseis. good gracious, am I predictable... Okay, I'm just way too much of a dyed-in-the-wool classical language fancier. Even when it comes to programming... I want to use GOTO. It would make the code shorter, more elegant, and more obfuscated. Waaah. Must...refrain...from...GOTO... That is all. Current Mood: amusedCurrent Music: Computers humming |
