Do it yourself, with shredded foam!

Gratuitous Update... There sure are a lot of tech jobs out
there. |
8.12.2000 |
My big fat computer is now running my web server. This ought to help
things out a bit, as the billions of hits this site was getting were
just too much for my poor old 486. Um. Well. Anyway, I'm running Oracle
on here now, so I'm starting on writing a cool new dealy for this
site, and maybe the content will change more than once a week.
Attention SVN Members! Since I'm on my new web server, I have
ample storage now, and am itching to fill this machine up. If anybody
still has copies of their shows (or anything else, for that matter)
I would love to put them up here on the site. Email me at gimpy@gimpysoft.com
and we'll work out how to get it done. I have a capture card here,
and would be more than willing to capture and encode myself if anyone
wants to send me tapes. If you think you can do a better job (you
probably can), I can set up an account for you so you can just send
me the files. Hell, if anybody actually tries to hit the site, maybe
I'll think about getting some real bandwidth. |

Well, I am just about done with my work on the new server. It'll be
active by the end of the week, and I think it might help video performance
a bit. Keep in mind, it is video on the internet, and I can't get
DSL. Hopefully I'll be out in California soon, where the bandwidth
flows freely. |

Though I haven't been updating this too much, I have been working
on the site behind the scenes. I had been trying to compile MySQL
on this poor beast, but I fear that it's just too much for
him to bear. The compiler gets a signal 9 which I have been assured
is an actual physical problem with the machine... Might explain those
bus errors I was getting when I was first installing the OS on the
poor guy. I've also been told that email is being returned... Not
sure what's going on with that, but I would guess it has something
to do with this machine as well. Anyway, it looks like I'm going to
bite the bullet, wipe my real machine, and install Linux on it, and
see how long I can survive Microsoft free. I'll probably keep a small
Windows partition so Gurney Halleck, Raj Mahal and I can continue
to play Age of Empires, but that would mean that Gimpysoft.com would
be down whenever I was gaming. I've been one click away from buying
a new machine a couple of times now. Maybe it's about time I did that.
And my worst paranoid corporate fantasies have been dashed. I was truly hoping to get a report back from
Acxiom listing every place I've ever lived, all my friends, all the magazines I subscribe to, every porn site
I've ever visited, and a full list of every item I've ever purchased online. Instead, what I got back from
Acxiom was seven sheets of paper consisting of search criteria (My name, my last three addresses, and my last
three phone numbers) and the phrase No Match. The only information that they did find was that my
current phone number is in my name. Hmmm... Guess I'm going to have to find something else to complain
about. In the meantime, I'll just complain about this website. Man, this website sucks.

Well after thinking my hub was dead for far too long, I decided to
put it up again. It seems that everything is fine after all.
I got bored earlier this week, and I was browsing
Acxiom's website. They're based here in Arkansas, and they're
in the business of selling information about you to companies that
are interested in you. They collect information from surveys, from
phone books, from other companies, and sell it for marketing, etc.
It turns out that you can opt not to have them divulge your information
if you send an email requesting an Opt-Out form to
optout@acxiom.com. More intriguing though, you can also request
a copy of all the information they have on you by requsting a Acxiom
Consumer Information Request form from
consumerreport@acxiom.com. I requested my form last week, and
I already have it. Unfortunately, it costs you $5.00, and though I
hate to actually give money to such an evil organization, I'm going
to send it off and see what they have on me. I'll let you know what
I find. |

Well, I'm getting started on a new layout. I'm planning on getting
a section up here where I can bitch to my many Fans and Admirers.
Young Pups cast and crew: I'm going to be putting a seperate Young
Pups section up here before too much longer. If you'd like me to include
a blurb about what you've been doing lately, send it over. (Or if
you just want to use an alias so as not to be associated with this
silliness.) I'm sure there are literaly billions of people who have
been waiting for updates and such... Anyway, I'm done for today. I'm
just not in the mood... |
5.01.2000 |
Yup, it looks like I really need to do something about the sound levels
on that. I think I'll probably re-encode Episode 3 tonight. I looked
at it at work, but that's not too far removed from my local network
here. Has anyone else taken a look at it yet? What else should I do
with this silly web page? |
4.29.2000 |
1:12 PM - Doh... Minimum system requirements for realvideo
server are 512Mb of Ram... I don't think I even have 512Mb of hard
drive space on my poor old linux box... However, all is not yet lost.
I think that I can still serve realvideo files through a regular old
web server. We'll see shortly. I captured the entire third show, but
I messed the sound levels all up. I'm going to try starting it again
and see how it comes out.
6:16 PM - Hmmm... I went to dinner, and left this encoding,
so there's about 40 minutes of static at the end of the show, and
both the audio and video suck, but here is the highly experimental
Young Pups - Episode
3 in Real Video. This one is only encoded for 28.8 modems, and
video over that sucks. I might make up another one for 56k modems,
but it might not be too much better. I'll keep messing with it. Regardless,
it's just being served up off a crappy 486 with 8M of RAM over ISDN...
Hopefully I'll be able to get DSL when I move here shortly.
9:26 PM - Well, the 56k
version of Episode 3 does suck a little less. Take a look, I'd
be interested to hear if it works from anywhere but my computer here...
Maybe I ought to actually put some work into layout on this page or
something... |
4.28.2000 |
Got mail working now. Feel free to email gimpy@gimpysoft.com
and see if my poor server can handle it. In just a little bit, I'm
going to have Real Video installed over here, and you can expect to
see some Young Pups clips up here shortly thereafter. I'm also going
to see what I can do about making an mp3 out of the Pi song and get
it out there... (If that's OK with you, Ed...) |
