Update December 12, 2024 -- The suspect has died, San Diego Police have confirmed to ECM news partner 10 News. Per protocol in officer-related shootings, SDPD is in charge of the investigation.

December 11, 2024 (El Cajon) – During preparations for a retirement celebration for an El Cajon Police captain outside ECPD headquarters this afternoon, multiple officers opened fire on a black Toyota pickup truck after it rammed an ECPD officer and tried to hit another officer, according to public information officer Keith MacArthur.
ECPD announced the incident on social media at 1:14 p.m.
One officer was injured and was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect has also been hospitalized; no update on the suspect’s condition has been provided.
Officers were driving to the staging area for the retirement ceremony when the incident occurred. The injured officer was not the retiring captain, who served 30 years on the force.

Update: An earlier version of this article indicated that the suspect struck an ECPD vehicle; in fact it was an officer who was struck.
