Descendants of Crom Festival-Cattivo-Pittsburgh, PA September 30, 2017

On Saturday September 30, 2017 at 3:00 PM EST all hell will break loose on the City of Pittsburgh, PA. An event of epic proportions, 17 killer Stoner Rock/Doom/Metal bands are set to ignite the two stages of Cattivo in the Lawrenceville section of the city. This festival is the first of its kind for Pittsburgh and I say it is about damn time! Event organizer Shy Kennedy (Horehound/Blackseed Records) has excelled at putting together such a fine collection of bands, especially by nabbing Pittsburgh-based doom legends Penance (Alpha & Omega lineup). Growing up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh I am a little giddy about this festival. From the scorching NWOBHW sounds of Pittsburgh's own Lady Beast to the instrumental Doomy Jazz of  Philly's Stinking Lizaveta, there is enough to appease the tastes of everyone attending.

For the overzealous, there will be an acoustic pre-fest at the Full Pint Wild Side Pub, click here for more info.

Lineup:

CANT
MONOLITH WIELDER
LADY BEAST
ENHAILER
ARCHARUS
HORSEBURNER
WASTED THEORY
FOGHOUND
EYE
BRIMSTONE COVEN
SOLACE
THE MIDNIGHT GHOST TRAIN
CLOUDS TASTE SATANIC
VALKYRIE
EARTHRIDE
STINKING LIZAVETA
PENANCE (Alpha & Omega lineup)

Have a listen to the bands:

QUICK HIT: Cloud - "Indeterminate"

Cloud have been around for a short minute, releasing their first EP on bandcamp back in 2015. "Indeterminate" is their second release. It's savory. It's toothsome. It's intoxicating. I very much hope this Pittsburgh trio thrive and continue to manufacture psychedelic stoner/doom riffage just as they have done here and extend that minute into legend and legacy.

The perception sometimes is that instrumental music has to work that extra bit at developing enough creativity to engage and entertain those who experience their music due to the absence of vocals, and the structure vocals tend to supply in stanza and chorus. If that's the case, then mission accomplished, Cloud. There is no ramp up period on any track as each song manages to immediately connect to an atmosphere of intrigue and a depth of discovery. They do this by expertly and eloquently wielding their instruments of stoner brilliance, cranking up the fuzz factor in addictive riffs of low-tuned ecstasy and psychedelic progressivism.

Cloud have added a cunning deviation in the middle of the song selections by inserting the provocative song "Desert Weed" in which they've recruited the vocal inspiration of Mephistofeles' Gabriel Ravera, whose style, at least on this particular rendition, is a magnificent homage to the metal legend of Ozzy Osbourne.

Band Submission: Horehound-Doom/Stoner From Pittsburgh, PA

Band Name: Horehound
Genre: Doom/Stoner
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Brief Bio/Description: Blackseed Records & Releases’ artist HOREHOUND, the Doom Metal/Hard Rock outfit from the Steel City of Pittsburgh, PA have been ripping up the metro scene throughout the past year with their live shows. Well-known clubs such as Gooski’s, 31st Street Pub (R.I.P.), Howlers and Club CafĂ© have seen the band move up the ranks opening for genre mainstays Karma to Burn, Foghound, and Cavern while developing a concrete foundation and fan base along the way.

Formed in February 2015, the band quickly pooled their experiences and influences to create their heavy yet heavily approachable sound. Vocalist Shy Kennedy explodes into her debut role as front-woman and brings her unique and haunting style to each song. The band’s dual guitar grind comes via Mike Altopiedi (rhythm) and Brendan Parrish (lead), both formerly of the band Perish. On drums is JD Dauer, who brings many years of heavy-hitting to the band while also a regular with rockabilly outfit Memphis Mike & The Legendary Tremblers. David “Wes” Westfall brings a devastating low-end onslaught as bassist and is also currently a guitarist for the band The New Casual.

2016 pushes the 5-piece even further with their debut 7-song LP slated for release April 20th, 2016. A regional tour this summer including dates in OH, PA, MD, and NY are in the works and opening slots for national headliners Order of the Owl, Graves at Sea, and Prong are booked!

The momentum is building at lightning speed. With new music, shows, tours and promotions, HOREHOUND is on the rise, ready for the world to come!

Quick Hit-Cruces

One great thing about being part of Heavy Planet is that we are many times one of the first to hear a given band. With that being said, why in the hell did I not know about Cruces? The band not only released their brilliant self-titled EP back in February, but they are also from my neck of the woods. The EP astonishes with it's beautifully crafted display of harmonizing guitars, psyche-tinged doomy blues, and a spine-chilling powerful female vocal which may be one of the very best I have ever heard. Favorite tracks such as "Vision" and "Through the Glass, Darkly" are sure to get this band noticed.
All record labels take heed.

Zac's "Quik Drag": Supervoid-Filaments

Supervoid - Filaments

Some of the Heavy Planet crew, including myself, had the chance to catch Supervoid live in Pittsburgh at the 31st St Pub this past August. This local five piece got started back in 2012 and have been bludgeoning audiences with what Heavy Planets' very own Tobias Maximus described as a monumental mash-up of Lamb of God meets Mastodon. Having never listened to Supervoid previously, I had no idea what to expect. However, I was reassured by the band's tee shirt propaganda (Baroness, Immortal and Mastodon) that these cats were educated in the heavy and were going to deliver a hefty helping to the minute crowd that particular summer evening.

Since that ear fuzzing and spine numbing evening, Supervoid have completed their debut release Filaments and given Heavy Planet the chance to preview it. First off, the wait was worth it and second, everything I was engrossed in at the smoke filled 31st St Pub has evolved into an interstellar road trip that you won't mind giving up shotgun, you'll just want to be part of the trip. These five musicians play off one another with such fluidity that the music becomes a cosmic river, rolling through both organic and man-made structures, eroding what was and transforming it into something new. Supervoid employ a sludge-coated trod at the core of their tunes and compliment the lows with a starry ascension. This creates a sort of ebb and flow very similar to the instrumental post-metal genius' Pelican and Red Sparrows, except here listeners are getting lashed with a diverse style of vocals, part Randy Blythe part Jeff Martin (Lo-Pan). Filaments does not simply rely on atmoshpere and ambiance, the group dive into the record like they were late for the party of the century. Coat of Luminous, our album opener, is full of fast strumming, catchy licks, and plenty of chances for everyone to sing a long. Quite a contrast to the space rock inspired, progressive side of Filaments. Stand out track for this listener is Wake of the Smoke Jumper. Implementing some steady bass drum thumps Wake of the Smoke Jumper quickly mutates as the lead vocals appear as an all devouring mouth monster gulping down the very ground before you. Some powerful female vocals (ha ha found out this is actually Brian) soar over-top the gritty male vocals in the chorus and the song recedes back with some cleaner plucking only to be overtaken again in a golden napalm shower.

Filaments is a dynamic and surprising debut for these Pittsburgh'rs. Fans of progressive sludge titans Mastodon and the film Star Wars will certainly be smitten from the galactic style artwork with thematic gems hidden on the cover, the low n' slow burners and elephantine percussion.  Filaments is available now as a name your price download.  Be sure to get your copy or if you will be in the Pittsburgh area catch the release show with the mighty Orange Goblin at The Rex Theater [October 26th].

Brian - Vocals

Pittsburgh's Progressive Sludge Demons Supervoid Set To Release Debut Album, Stream Exclusive Track

After generating a huge buzz upon the release of their devastating EP "Endless Planets" and scorching live shows with the likes of Borracho, Been Obscene, Windhand, Clamfight and many others, Supervoid is set to release its furious debut "Filaments" on October 26th.

In astronomy, a galaxy filament is the largest known cosmic structure. They are essentially strings of galaxies that form the borders of large voids of nothing in the universe. The concept behind the album is that each track is about an event that takes place on Earth, but is reflected through the cosmos. Each track has a coinciding constellation it is related to. These are listed in the digipak/lyric booklet that will come with the CD.

Here is the cover art. Each icon represents a track. The bear is for The Bear, the snake is for Ride the Snake, etc.

Album title: Filaments

Track listing:

1. Coat of Luminous
2. Braymerian: War Elephant
3. Ride the Snake
4. Wake of the Smoke Jumper
5. Ladders

New Band To Burn One To: SERPENT LORD

HEAVY PLANET PRESENTS

SERPENT LORD

BAND BIO:

Rowdy as fuck!

Chris Booth -Vox
Jason Sichi - Guitar
Bill Criss - Guitar
Kevin Kupecz -Bass/Vox
Jeff Kalp - Drums

THOUGHTS:

"This past Saturday Toby, Zac and I attended a show in Pittsburgh at the 31st Street Pub that included Foghound, Kingsnake and Supervoid. It was an amazing show but a rather disappointing turnout which is usually the case when it comes to incredible music. The opening band was a pleasant surprise which I later found out was from the Steel City. I also realized that they had never been featured on the pages of Heavy Planet neither. We'll here is your introduction to Serpent Lord.

After hearing the band play live it was evidenced and confirmed by my fellow Heavy Planet compadres that the band has a very Alice in Chains-like feel. Especially in the guitar sound. But the band takes that sound to a much doomier level and totally brings a satisfying heavy groove to the table. The songs were tight and the band had a very nice chemistry playing off each other very well. I can't help but gush over the vocals of Chris Booth. Gritty, raspy and very melodic. The perfect fit for their music.

According to the band, a full-length is in the works and should be out very soon. Until then you can check out a few demo songs they have up on their Bandcamp page.

New Band To Burn One To: ZOM

HEAVY PLANET PRESENTS...ZOM!

BAND BIO:

ZOM is a powerful mystic entity that exists only to destroy. This extradimensional force is of unknown origin but resides in eternity beyond all worlds, beyond all time. ZOM was momentarily imprisoned but has been freed from the amphora and the chains of living bondage to begin the rampage and bring down the temple.

ZOM is a brand new project from experienced music vets Gero von Dehn (Pittsburgh, PA) and Andrew D’Cagna (Martin's Ferry, Ohio). These two multifaceted musicians have played in multitudes of bands over many years and toured the nation from Seattle to NYC. Gero von Dehn has most recently led the rock n’ roll outfit, Shovel Duck (also with D’Cagna) sang for groove-heavy metallers, Von Dane and fronted Fear Itself before that. D’Cagna can also be heard playing bass for the buzzworthy occult rock act, Brimstone Coven. Prior to that D’Cagna showed off his vocal chops in the true metal band Dofka and ripped the 6-string for the ultra groovy Wilderkin.

These two have combined forces once again to create ZOM, a monstrous force of heavy rock n' roll full of stinky, stoner grooves and grab-you-by-the-throat hooks. ZOM goes straight to the gut and doesn't stop its relentless attack until the album ends. The debut self titled album was recorded and mixed at D’Cagna’s Sacred Sound Studio in Martin’s Ferry, Ohio. Anxiously awaited, the debut release from ZOM is sure to meet, if not exceed its high expectations.

Additional notes: Special appearance by Justin Wood from Black Plastic Caskets (guitar solos on "Alien" and "Gifters") and album cover artwork by Creighton Hill.

THOUGHTS:

"It's always cool when you discover a band that is based in the city you live in. This band simply known as ZOM is currently based in Pittsburgh and consists of two metal veterans. The band plays a scorching brand of stoner metal. With an infectious groove, tight riffs and metal attitude the band electrifies on their latest self-titled EP. The EP opens with the heavy groove of "Nebulos/Alien" followed by the mud-slinging southern stomp of "Burning". The vocals are raspy and powerful and coalesce with the music very well. The track "Solitary" is a gritty and emotional slow-paced ballad with melodic harmonies and a killer build-up. The EP ends on a high note with the crunchy metal rocker "There's Only Me".
Fire one up and give these dudes a listen!"

New Band To Burn One To: SUPERVOID

HEAVY PLANET presents... SUPERVOID!

BAND BIO:

We're a five piece (guitar x2, bass, drums and vox) of dudes who just wanted to get together and have fun making some heavy music, heavily influenced by bands like Thin Lizzy, Kyuss, Fu Manchu and Weedeater. We don't confine ourselves to any certain wheelhouse, and have songs that range from 10 minute space jams to slow sludge-filled blues driven walls of noise. We only just started gigging a couple of months ago, but are picking up steam and have been embraced by our local Pittsburgh scene. We have played with The Atlas Moth, and have an unannounced minitour in the works with a few bands that you may know.

THOUGHTS:

"I must be honest, every time I receive a band submission from a band from Pittsburgh, PA I get overwhelmed with excitement. Why you ask? Because the Stoner/Sludge scene in this town is rather nonexistent. I can literally count the number of bands on one hand. It could also be because I don't get out much anymore these days. Anyways, here is another amazing new band to add to that list. Supervoid ,simply put, is incredible! This band goes from atmospheric space rock to ear damaging raging sludge in a heartbeat. The vocals range from a nice clean mix to a hollow bellowing howl, both of which I like equally as much. The impact of these two songs is enormous. Both songs are almost like having a few songs mixed into one, but without sacrificing song structure. The groove, intensity and influences shine through on this brilliant EP. Hopefully, I will get to check these guys out in the near future. Until then, this EP will have to suffice."

Check out some footage of the band in the studio

Album Review: Low Man - "Low Man"

LOW MAN - "Low Man"

Low Man deliver it raw and real, with no pretense, but with plenty of heart and a soul black as the sludge they pump through it's arteries while conjuring up the unseen forces that make their presence known through the massive sound coursing and surging through the fiber network of  your dark and conscious being.

Low Man are raw, but refined, loud and down low, rough around a myriad of edges, delivering massive, brutal, and unyielding power in their music. Their classification, their genre is . . . they play loud, they play with distortion, they  scrape your gums. They craft a melody so good it hardens your arteries and steals your neutrons as it passes through on its way to this galaxy's black hole, where only music this powerfully and artfully executed can make the long, dark, and cold journey, taking you down brief and rapturous moments along the way.

Low Man consists of band members:

Luke Rifugiato - Guitar, Vocals
J.z. - Bass, Vocals
Alex Byers - Guitar
Derek Krystek - Drums

The opening track, "Migraine", kicks off the album with perfect tone and intent, full of power and grace, distorted for your listening pleasure. Power vocals bring up the temperature of arterial bloodflow in "Golden Dawn" while "American Literature From 1860" is a bare knuckled turn of the century grudge match, crunching heavily on perfectly synched guitars, huge energetic drums, and bass that cuts a pendulum swath through a pit of depravity. "Pay the Bills" evokes a fast ride in a retro-fitted car barreling down an abandoned road while spewing thick, oily exhaust into the audacious chase car following slowly behind. "Machine" perpetuates the raw, rebellious flagrancy of devil may care lyrics, and a beautifully punchy melody that delivers a powerful uppercut followed by a knockout left punch leaving you dizzy and smiling through your loose bloody teeth.

New Band To Burn One To: SALLY

Heavy Planet presents...SALLY!

Today's "New Band To Burn One To" comes to you from Birmingham, UK.

Band Bio:

Birmingham based SALLY, came together in 1996 as a trio, Andrew Parker(guitar), Peter Brown(bass), Darren Donovan(drums, vocals) taking their name from ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ heroin ‘Sally Hardesty’, their music was heavily influenced by bands such as MUDHONEY, FU MANCHU and SONIC YOUTH. Guitarist Nigel Baker augmented the line-up in 1997. They recorded two demo tapes with this line-up. After witnessing a live performance supporting ORANGE GOBLIN in their hometown of Birmingham, LEE DORRIAN of RISE ABOVE RECORDS/CATHEDRAL offered the young trio a deal. Shortly before recording, SALLY inducted LEE SMITH( formerly of ETERNAL/ELECTRIC WIZARD, MOURN and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania doom legends PENANCE) on vocals. The s/t album was recorded in 1998. Baker would leave the band in 1999, not being happy with their ‘heavier’ direction. They continued as a quartet.

A BILLY ANDERSON produced sophomore album(C-EARTH) was released during 2004. The band would break up shortly after that.

SALLY have supported ORANGE GOBLIN, ELECTRIC WIZARD, GOATSNAKE, MARK D(melvins), SPIRIT CARAVAN, BEAVER, NEBULA, KARMA TO BURN, and more recently after a re-union in 2010 : SOILENT GREEN, BLOOD CEREMONY, SIGIRYIA, SLAB DRAGGER.

Thoughts:
"Many of you may be familiar with Sally as they are not exactly a "new" band. In 2010 the band got a new lease on life with constant touring and is now planning on releasing some new material. This is our way of re-introducing you to the band if you will. Sally's meandering tempos and hypnotic grime are sure to please the ears of any fan dedicated to all things Doom. Their music leads the listener along a gilded path of equally dark and psychedelic worlds which feature noisy guitars, fierce vocals and acrid heaviness. Take a listen to the band simply known as Sally and hear for yourself."

The Evening Buzz edition of "New Band To Burn One To" today features Vulture.

Formed in 2007, a vocalist change in 2009 and continued focus on heaviness and groove, Vulture’s thick murky sound has evolved into what they refer to as “Steel City Sludge”. You can get a taste of what’s to come with the exclusive track “Prick of Misery” taken from the forthcoming compilation “Iron Atrocity Vol. 1” on Innervenus.

Justin Erb: vocals
Gene Fikhman: guitar
Kelly Gabany: drums
Garrett Twardesky: guitar

Angry fists of heavy, aggressive sludge punch you in the face as each riff intensifies amidst a slow churning groove. Gorging themselves with an abundance of doom riffs, Pittsburgh's Vulture will rattle your bones, steal your soul and hopefully inspire more bands from the "Burgh to join the doom metal allegiance. Doom on Vulture, Doom on!

New Band To Burn One To (Morning Buzz): Sistered

The Morning Buzz edition of "New Band To Burn One To" today features Sistered.

Bio:

Sistered is a COSMIC DEATH PUNK band shredding triumphant epics from
the bowels of the rust belt with a diverse cohesion as ambitious as
early-era heavy metal, but with all the grit and realism of the 90's
hardcore & grunge movements that smashed 80's heavy metal into
irrelevance. A DIY, blue collar work ethic burns at the core of
everything they do. Sistered is self-produced, self-made and talkin
shit from outer space.

Jesse Meredith (vox/gtr), John Dzziuban (gtr/vox), Cary Belback (bass)
and Josh Egan (drums) came together in a tempest of near-death
experiences, institutionalization, religious crises and otherwise
positive childhood affairs to craft the soundtrack to these dystopian
times. They awoke from the chemical haze, looked in the mirror and
proclaimed into the ether "Sistered must be." And so, it is...

Web|Facebook|ReverbNation

Being from the band's hometown of Pittsburgh, my outlook of the band may seem a little biased. I think that Sistered may be one of the best things to come from the 'Burgh since the Primanti Bros. famous sandwich. Sistered developed their sound around 90's post grunge and layered it with slabs of progressive doom rock ala Kylesa, Mastodon, etc. added some insane dual riffing, yelling vocals and tons off killer melody to make one damn incredible sound. Check out Sistered now. You won't regret it.

Album Of The Week-"Back From The Dead "-Dream Death (2004)

The "Album Of The Week" is "Back From The Dead" by Dream Death.

This band brings back some great memories. I remember seeing this band a few times at the Electric Banana in Pittsburgh, Pa. This place was pretty much a dive, but staged some pretty awesome bands during the seventies and eighties. I saw many shows there amongst mostly pretty sparse audiences, which made it all the better. One of the most incredible bands to play there was Dream Death. The band put out an awesome brand of Doom/Death metal and this album pretty much sums it all up combining all 3 of their demos on one album. Do yourself a favor and check out this largely overlooked but unbelievable band at their undeniable best.

"Combining elements of both thrash and doom with traditional metal styles and a hoarse, hardcore vocal style, Pittsburgh, PA's Dream Death were among the more unique underground metal acts of the 1980s. Brian Lawrence (vocals/guitar), Terry Weston (guitar), Ted Williams (bass), and Mike Smail (drums) formed Dream Death in 1984 and promptly recorded their first demo, entitled "More Graveyard Delving." This, along with regular gigging in local clubs eventually led to a deal with second-division thrash specialists New Renaissance Records, which released the group's debut album, Journey Into Mystery, in 1987. The album gained many positive reviews but little promotional support from New Renaissance, and when Williams defected to local thrash band Eviction, the remaining members of Dream Death drifted apart. Drummer Smail would resurface a few years later on the first album by English doom gods Cathedral, and all but Williams would later go on to found the enduring doom metal band Penance." (Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide)

Review:

"Combining elements of metal, doom, hardcore vocals, and speed, Dream Death gained popularity among the metal underground in the eighties, have returned to release Back From the Dead. Back From The Dead, compiled and produced by Mike Smail (drums) is the official release of the three Dream Death demos recorded in the mid to late eighties. The band's 1987 release, Journey Into Mystery, on New Renaissance Records, is considered an underground classic. After Williams’ departure from Dream Death, Mike Smail (Penance, Internal Void and Pentagram), Terry Weston (guitar), and Brian Lawrence (guitar and vocals) reformed with a slightly modified line-up under the name Penance. Lawrence left Penance after two releases, but Penance continues today with Smail as the only remaining original member. In addition to Penance, Smail has also lent his drumming skills to Cathedral, Silver Tongued Devil, Internal Void and the legendary Pentagram." (Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles)

Album Of The Day- Midnite Snake-"Self-Titled" (2004)

The Album Of The Day is the 2004 self-titled album by Midnite Snake.

Review:

Midnite Snake's crashing power chords make an instant impression on their self-titled debut on The Birdman Group. Unabashedly stoner rock, the trio clashes through eight smoldering instrumentals, opening with the charged-up "Nutra-Turbo Overdrive." Ex-Modey Lemon drummer Paul Quattrone and bassist Jim Lingo are rounded out by guitarist Alexei Plotnicov's dizzying artistry. "Ambassadors of Throttle (In the Sky We Will Ride)" is a scorching classic rocker, "He Ain't My Brother, He's Heavy" is sludging and chaotic, while "Snakebite at Midnite" charges through with relentless energy and tenacity. Not for the faint of heart, the disc has a pace that remains furious throughout, until the end. "Acid Wash" closes out the album with finesse and reflection. Recorded in December 2002 at WPTS at the University of Pittsburgh, the disc's overwhelmingly live feel leaves listeners craving for more. Taking cues from Acid Mothers Temple, Oneida, and the MC5, Midnite Snake proves to be more than a flash in the pan. (Stephen Cramer, All Music Guide)

Track Listing:

01. Nitro-Turbo-Overdrive
02. Ambassadors of Throttle (in the Sky We Will Ride)

HIGH ON FIRE: Pittsburgh Footage Posted Online

Fan-filmed video footage of Oakland, California-based band HIGH ON FIRE's February 14, 2008 concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania can be viewed below (courtesy of digitallive).

HIGH ON FIRE's "Rumors Of War" video, the first from the band's "Death Is This Communion" album, made its "Headbanger's Ball" debut in December on MTV2. The clip was lensed in Los Angeles by director/producer Soren (UNEARTH, CEPHALIC CARNAGE, GREELEY ESTATES).

MetalKult.com recently posted a 14-clip question-and-answer video interview with HIGH ON FIRE guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike.

The video was shot on August 15, 2007 in New York City, when Pike was visiting the East Coast to promote HIGH ON FIRE's latest album, "Death Is This Communion" (Relapse).

During the interview Pike discusses the foundations of his brutal tone and style, HIGH ON FIRE's exotic sonic elements, the departure of bassist Joe Preston (THRONES, ex-MELVINS) and what HIGH ON FIRE's new bassist, Jeff Matz, brings to the mix. Also on MetalKult.com is a 25-minute video riff lesson with HIGH ON FIRE's Pike, in which the guitarist demonstrates how to play some of the classic riffs in his catalog, from SLEEP's "The Druid" and "Dragonaut" to HIGH ON FIRE's "Baghdad", "Blessed Black Wings" and "Turk".
