Character Confessions: Arrapato (Piper Maitland)

Arrapato the Vampire Dog Is Talking, He’s Telling All He Knows.

I’ve got a bone to pick with Piper Maitland. If she hadn’t come into my life, I’d still be a normal 8-pound Affenpinscher, dining on Alpo and ground sirloin. Now I’m a vampire dog, and it’s all her fault.

Piper: That’s not how it happened. The transformation was your master’s idea. Raphael adores you so much, he wanted you to be immortal. I didn’t “put” you in the novels. I looked down, and there you were, showing your teeth.

Arrapato: Don’t blame your behavior on the woo-woo aspects of writing. You made the decisions. Own them. Though I’m glad you made me an Affenpinscher, not an parakeet.
Piper: Lighten up. Immortality has its virtues. Your muzzle won’t turn gray, and your teeth won’t fall out. You’ll always be three years old.

Arrapato: Yeah, but I celebrated my fortieth birthday last month. In dog years, that makes me 280-years-old.
Piper: Still, you’ll always be healthy. No distemper. No fleas.

Arrapato: And no sunlight, or I’ll end up flambéed. I can’t eat grass anymore. I drink my supper from a bowl. A liquid diet is boring. I fantasize about sinking my teeth into some Little Cesar dog food—the filet mignon flavor looks so tasty—but it’ll never happen. I’m a vamp.
Piper: You’re still a dog. Can’t you chew a bone? Or bite squeak toys?

Arrapato: Yes, but my fangs shred them in seconds. You would not believe the mess. Raphael just bought a DustBuster and a bagless Dyson.
Piper: You love to chase vacuum cleaners.

Arrapato: No, I hate the sound. I just want the lambs to stop screaming, so to speak.
Piper: Poor Arrapato. How can I lift your spirits?

Arrapato: Treat me with respect.
Piper: I always do.

Arrapato: Explain that scene in your novel, the one in Norway. You put me in a coffin!
Piper: It was a UV-proof container. I was trying to protect you from daylight.

Arrapato: If you’re so concerned about my welfare, why did you drag me into the sewers of Paris? Did you forget about my acute sense of smell? Did you have one drop of pity when I had a sneezing fit?
Piper: I felt terrible. At least you weren't alone. Raphael and Caro were there.

Arrapato: You could have handed out gas masks. And you mishandled the situation. I’m the alpha dog, but you put Raphael in charge. Don’t get me wrong—I love him to pieces—but he gets to do all the fun stuff. Me, I’m the canine sidekick. I’m not telepathic. I don’t even talk.
Piper: You’re talking now.

Arrapato: It stops me from biting your ankle.
Piper: I've made you unhappy. Should I write you out of the series?

Arrapato: I double-dog dare you.

Out of the shadows...
For more than a decade, Caro Barrett has had doubts about the death of her husband, who disappeared while looking for a tribe of day-walking vampires in an African rainforest. Now, their daughter is struggling through her teenage years without a father. Waiting in the wings is an ancient vampire ready to possess Caro's heart--and to protect them both from harm. And, with her husband declared legally dead, Caro feels it is finally time to move on...
A hemisphere away in a windowless compound, an Ottoman vampire lies dying from a rare blood disease, which has made him vulnerable to the faintest bit of light. Sheep Book Review: Hunting Daylight

Hunting Daylight, by PNR author Piper Maitland, is the second installment and much anticipated follow-up to Acquainted with the Night. Book two left me with mixed emotions, but by the end I was (finish this sentence!)

Plot:

For more than a decade, Caro Barrett has had doubts about the death of her husband, who disappeared while looking for a tribe of day-walking vampires in an African rainforest. Now, their daughter is struggling through her teenage years without a father. Waiting in the wings is an ancient vampire ready to possess Caro’s heart—and to protect them both from harm. And, with her husband declared legally dead, Caro feels it is finally time to move on…

A hemisphere away in a windowless compound, an Ottoman vampire lies dying from a rare blood disease, which has made him vulnerable to the faintest bit of light. Yet he is determined to vanquish its power over him—to feel the sun on his face one last time. And in Caro’s darkest fears he will be lifted into the light of day…

A large portion of this story is wrapped around building the world, delving into the ambiance of each and every city spanning the globe. Tasty foods, smells of the spices, all which creates a backdrop for a globe-trekking adventure. I sadly found this both nagging and slow paced, I mean how many descriptions of food do we need? Give me the action and romance! If anything, this book will make you hungry for a sweet treat to go along with your latte. Dieters beware!

On the other hand, if you don't have the means to travel, as must of us don't, then you can get into the vastness of this tale with gusto. For me, I like a lot more epic adventure and action to my tales than exotic locales.

As the story picks up, we learn that our main gal is on the run with her young daughter. Chased by a sinister cult and with a husband who's been MIA for years, we quickly find out that it's a tough life to lead, especially with a hormonal teenage daughter in tow. I'm not big on the teenage angle but I get why the author shows the growth of Vivi and how far her life has come since we first meet her.

Toward to back half of the story, the action and drama picks up! A love triangle has developed and Caro must decide. You know a decision is coming but the slow build keeps the fire burning until the final pages. I'm not sure how I feel about this turn of events and it's definitely not what I was expecting. One the one hand, I love the new twist but on the other it's hard to read a story that takes on a new life in the second installment.

Overall, the tale is entertaining enough to keep you turning the pages and packed with human drama while all paced to a vampire world.

If Your Houseguest is a Vampire…

‘Tis the season for parties, friends, and fellowship. But what if your overnight houseguest is a vampire? Should you run? Offer him a bloody Mary or pan-fried blood sausages?
Entertaining an immortal can be a rewarding and enlightening experience if you follow a few helpful guidelines:

1. Prepare your home in advance
Rent a coffin and place it in the darkest room of your house. Pillows and 300-count linen will add a nice touch. Remove all decorative crucifixes, garlic pods, and holy water.

2. Make a “welcome” basket
Add toothpaste, toothbrush, SPF 100 sun block, and a sampler of blood (use test tubes and seal with corks).

3. Provide Background Music
Marilyn Manson’s “If I was Your Vampire”
The Smashing Pumpkin’s “We Only Come Out at Night”
ZZ Top’s “She’s Just Killing Me”
Joan Osborne’s “Dracula Moon”
Anything by Nine Inch Nails and Cradle of Filth

4. Play Ice-breaking Board Games
The Game of Life, 50th Anniversary Edition
Till Death Do Us Part
Fangolopy

5. Serve Hematoma Martinis
Mix 1 oz vodka, ½ oz orange-flavored liqueur, and 3 oz type O blood. Mix. Serve at room temperature.

6. Finally, kiss your vampire with your lips closed.

Thanks for the tips Piper! I am sure Katie is off to buy the game Fangopoly I know I am too!

Acquainted with the Night by author Piper Maitland

Acquainted with the Night by author Piper Maitland is a paranormal vampire suspense story with major twists and turns. If you love all things vampy and history across the ages you'll LOVE this book. It's a non-stop ride across the globe with a wonderful story to boot!

Plot:
A woman's quest for the truth...A medieval icon that holds the clues...And an ancient book with the power to shake Christianity-and humanity itself.

London tour guide Caroline Clifford has never believe in vampires- until her uncle is brutally murdered at a Bulgarian archaeological site, and a vampire hunter who corresponded with him seeks her out.

Strange anagrams on her uncle's passport lead them to a cliff-top monastery in Greece, where a shattering revelation connects a relic Caro inherited to an age-old text on immortality-and an enigmatic prophecy that pits the forces of darkness and light in a showdown that could destroy all they know...

Now the story's technically a UF but with a heavy paranormal foundation it's hard to tell and frankly who the frel cares! When you have a book this well written, its category is a really small detail. Part of what you have here is very well researched vampire book. It's an adventure stretching from London to Greece and back, really no rock seems unturned in this amazing story. With a major British twist you'll feel like you just stepped off a double-decker bus heading to the British Museum.

The characters are given some in-depth detail that builds as the story does, lots of twist and turns will keep you guessing. Backstabbing, clinical testing, and corporate greed keep the reader entertained throughout. The only downside I had was with our main character Caro. She starts out with amazing personality and picks up some nice speed as the story goes on, but about halfway through after a series of life altering events she becomes a tad too whiny for my liking. By the end she pulls it back together but the clingy needy girlie act rubbed me the wrong way. That being said she does have some valid reasons for it, but personally it was hard for me to relate.

I want to give Piper a TON of credit for the amount of research she did for this story, she never treats the reader like a child with the facts she is dishing out. You get a bunch of historical events mixed in with some fabulous lore and a new take on some vampire legends. Authors who can take creatures of the night, like vamps, and make them into something new and original will always win high praises in my book. This is the first novel for this author and I'm eagerly awaiting to see what she comes up with next!
