SAMANTHA
I never thought I’d willingly walk into Hell again, but I did.
I survived and am back where I belong—at home. But Gabe, my demon-dead friend, is still missing. And the guilt is crippling me.

While I’m laughing and happy with my boyfriend, Gabe is suffering. While I’m resting and healing, Gabe is being endlessly tortured. But every plan I come up with is a suicide mission. And despite what it sometimes looks like, I’m not ready to die.

So, when my werewolf friends ask me to help their pack with a problem, there’s no way I can say no—even if I’m not ready to jump into another fight. There’s a mysterious evil the werewolves can’t track, and they need me to help them kill it.
It’s the perfect distraction. The only problem? Phoenix, a mortal, wants to go with me.

Even though he’s proven he can handle the supernatural, I can’t help but think nothing good can come from him getting an even better glimpse of how not normal my work life is. But I can’t say no to him; all I can do is pray Phoenix is still by my side when this is over.

PHOENIX
My life pre-Samantha was turmoil. Soccer career, over. Family life, devastated after the loss of my grandmother. Dating? Laughable. Every relationship fell apart because the door in my heart had been shut tight. I was unknowingly holding out for the one girl who had completely changed my world.

Samantha is it for me; my heart knew it before I did. I’d go anywhere as long as it’s with her.

But her guardian angel, Eli, said something to me that makes me think something truly terrible will happen to Samantha. And I’m not about to let that happen. I’ll do anything to keep her safe.
“I absolutely loved this book, it blew my mind…I laughed, I cried, I swooned…it’s a heartfelt epic adventure! – Sheila Kay, Author

Dare to dream. Dare to believe. Dare to embrace your legacy.

In the enchanting land of The Vale, the grand city of Pivot stands as a beacon of innovation where scientific progress clashes with the now-dwindling beliefs in magic the place once held.

Just outside of Pivot, 17-year-old Pascal has spent his life at The Skystead Home for Orphaned Children. Life outside of the orphanage seems ceaselessly interesting, and shielded from the rest of the world, he wants nothing more than to explore. Already puzzled by unanswered questions about his past, Pascal’s concern deepens as he learns about a grim mystery of local children’s disappearances.

In pursuit of finding his place in life, Pascal is joined by Paloma—a street-savvy girl and former gang leader with a tragic past—and Pierrot—a silent, enigmatic companion. Together, the unlikely trio begins to sneak out of the orphanage to experience the one place that still embraces magic: the welcoming carnival.

As secrets come to light and begin to unravel, the truth unveils hidden strengths within each of the three young companions. Their fates become entangled with the lost souls, leading them to a terrifying truth that threatens the very foundation of their world. Their friendships are put to the test as they confront demons both within and outside themselves, drawing them closer to a sinister plot that can tear at the very fabric of their reality.

Before they know it, their paths become profoundly intertwined with the fate of the missing children.

The Harlequin’s Legacy is a gripping tale of adventure, friendship, and self-discovery. Pascal, Paloma, and Pierrot trust in their inner courage and resilience in order to reach their true potential despite trials and tribulations. This story encourages everyone to dare to dream, to believe in themself, and embrace the legacy that awaits them.

Excerpt:
Pascal was late. Again. He stepped quickly over fallen logs and ducked low beneath swooping evergreen branches. Though the wilderness was dense in this part of the forest, he navigated it with remarkable ease. His footsteps as light as a whisper over treacherous mossy rocks. With each exhale, misty clouds formed in the shake of his breath, the biting cold of winter creeping all the way through the thickness of his coat. He pulled his collar tighter to forbid the chill from entering even more.

Yet, as he walked, his mind strayed from his course, far from the natural beauty surrounding him.

He muttered under his breath as he walked over the gnarled roots, every step a cautious dance. He slipped and slid in his frequent eff orts to stoop under even more pointy twigs of evergreen that sought to block his path, to grab him as he passed. Pascal had taken this route countless times before, and today, that thought was a frustrating one.

After spending the majority of his life at the orphanage, he wanted nothing more than to leave, to see the world, to taste all that lay unseen and undiscovered. He would soon have that opportunity. Yet, knowing that he’d soon be graduating also left him uneasy.

Can I even handle surviving on my own? He wondered. I´ve always had the comfort of Mistress Alma and the orphanage to look after me.

The bittersweet longing left him conflicted and a little in secure, truth be told. How would he know when he was ready? What threshold would he finally cross?

The forest, usually a great source of comfort and solace, felt somehow different on this day. It seemed to be echoing his inner turmoil, causing him to lose all sense of time.

The sun stretched over the tree line of the Quiet Wilds, reminding him that his walk should have ended about fifteen minutes ago. He picked up his pace.

Great. The last thing I wanted to do was disappoint Mistress Alma. And miss dinner.

The final approach was quick, as he nearly ran the remaining half-mile. Once he spotted the entrance, he slipped in with stealth. The mess hall was already full. He’d have to wait for the perfect moment to sneak inside.

“Have you seen Pascal?”

Whispers spread through the orphanage’s mess hall like wildfire as the children ate their typical meal for a Wednesday night: potatoes and vegetable stew. A classic, one that Pascal didn’t want to miss.

When he peered around the corner, he spotted his friends Clarion and Danton exchanging a knowing glance. Surely, they were assuming he’d been caught up in his exploration outside the orphanage grounds. Which he had. In fact, that was exactly what he had done.

His eyes wandered down the table to Tania, one of the older girls at the orphanage, just as she was motioning for Mistress Alma. Damn. Of course, Tania would notice his absence. She never knew how to keep quiet about these sorts of things.

Removing her pince-nez glasses, Mistress Alma scanned over the mess hall. She rubbed at her eyes, which seemed to be sore at the day´s end, a fact that proved fortunate for Pascal. In her scan, she’d somehow managed to Miss Tania’s raised hand. She circled the room slowly and met children along the wall, all beaming in her presence.

Then, she turned on her heel to stride toward the kitchen, her simple brown dress and jacket flowing behind her.

Poor Tania was stretching her arm ever-higher, looking fit to burst from her efforts, but still, Mistress Alma did not see. That was a relief. Though, the win was short-lived; it was just a matter of time before she realized Pascal wasn´t present and that he was late again.

Once she disappeared into the kitchen, Pascal exhaled, his eyes glinting. This was the perfect opportunity. Yet, when he glanced around the mess hall at the tame expressions the children wore, he couldn’t suppress the urge to liven up their evening a bit more. After all, he’d been working on a few tricks that he could hardly wait to show them. Why not come in with a bang? He’d probably get in some amount of trouble anyway…

He walked around to the main mess hall entrance and burst through the doors with as much dramatic flair as he could muster. He flipped into a handstand, pressing his palms against the floor, and then strutted through the mess hall on his hands.

The room erupted in laughter. Pascal could never do things quietly.

Everyone knew she was the belle of the ball, and it was hard to imagine anyone ever taking her crown away from her.

The Heart of Chenoa is a heartwarming tale about a young woman's courage to leave her abusive boyfriend and start a new life in a new town. Along the way, she finds a group of misfit friends who become like family to her, including the inseparable siblings Brooke and Jerald, and the popular but conflicted JC, who harbors a secret love for Jerald. As they navigate high school drama and personal trauma, they come together to seek revenge against a conniving classmate, and ultimately learn to embrace their unique gifts and find strength in their bond.

The story explores themes of love, friendship, betrayal, and redemption as the characters navigate their way through the ups and downs of life. Brooke's premonitions and Lucille's powers add a touch of magic to the story, while Jerald learns to control his trauma-induced alter ego. Ultimately, they discover that they have grown and evolved in unexpected ways and that their bond is stronger than anything life can throw at them.

Excerpt:
Amidst the sprawling fields of Chenoa, a small town nestled in the heart of the Texas, a tale of resilience and friendship unfolds. At its core lies the story of a young woman named Indigo, whose journey from darkness to light weaves a tapestry of courage, love, and the transformative power of friendship.

Indigo had known no other reality than the one she shared with her abusive boyfriend, Troy. The shackles of fear bound her tightly, choking the life out of her dreams. But one fateful night, fueled by a flicker of courage ignited deep within her heart, she made the decision to break free.

With nothing but a few belongings and a trembling resolve, Indigo set out on a journey to start anew in a town where nobody knew her name. Chenoa welcomed her with open arms, offering sanctuary from the storm that had raged within her for far too long.

As Indigo tentatively navigated the unfamiliar school of her new home, she stumbled upon a group of misfits whose warmth and acceptance enveloped her like a comforting embrace. Among them were Brooke and Jerald, inseparable siblings whose laughter echoed through the halls of Chenoa High School, and JC, whose inner turmoil simmered beneath his charming exterior.

Together, they formed an unlikely family, bound not by blood but by the unbreakable ties of friendship and shared experiences. Each member of their motley crew bore scars of their own, but together, they found solace in the company of kindred spirits.

As high school dramas unfolded and personal traumas resurfaced, Indigo and her newfound companions stood united against the tide of adversity. They rallied together to seek justice against a conniving classmate, their bonds growing stronger with each shared victory.

But beneath the surface of their idyllic friendship lay secrets waiting to be unearthed. JC harbored a love for Jerald that dared not speak its name, while Brooke's premonitions whispered of futures yet to unfold. And in the shadows, Jerald battled with the demons of his past, struggling to tame the beast within.

Yet through it all, they clung to each other, their hearts intertwined in a tapestry of love and loyalty. As they confronted their deepest fears and embraced their unique gifts, they discovered that strength lies not in solitude but in the unbreakable bonds of friendship.

In The Heart of Chenoa, amidst the spanish moss trees and the whispering winds, Indigo and her friends learned that the greatest battles are fought not with fists but with hearts open wide. And as they embraced the magic woven into the fabric of their lives, they found redemption in the unlikeliest of places: within themselves, and within the hearts of those they held dear.

Character Confessions: Alex McKenna has something to say to his author + Giveaway

Thanks for having me on I Smell Sheep! I brought along a friend, well, more like an annoying little brother, Alex McKenna. We’ve been having the same argument for four books and I thought maybe we could finally settle it.

Alex: Vicki-Ann, first I want to say that I think the way you write me and Margaret is cool! I mean, she’s all in and supportive of who I am. Seeing the dead and talking to them can be scary for others but not Margaret, she’s right by my side. But what gets me the most is her reaction to me being transgender. Margaret understands that this is who I am and this is my journey, and she chooses to walk it with me.

Vicki-Ann: Thank you! You know how I feel, you are who you are. Being transgender is another side to the many things that make up Alex McKenna, just as it is with each and every person.

Alex: Okay, now that I’ve said that there’s something that’s been bugging me since book one.

Vicki-Ann: (Eye Roll) I know where you’re going with this.

Alex: See. If you know, then why not change it?

Vicki-Ann: Because I’ve told you a thousands times, I don’t write like that. I’m like 50 Shades of Disney. My romance is more sweet and less steamy. It just doesn’t flow for me.

Alex: But think about it. If Margaret and me could get a little closer, maybe even a lot closer, it might expand your audience and we’d get a lot more attention.

Vicki-Ann: Listen bud, I wish I could. I’ve tried. It comes out sounding like a tutorial to fix a busted water pipe. A lot of blah, blah, blah, and then an epic fail with a water fountain flooding
underneath the kitchen sink. Disaster.

Alex: (sighs) I guess I get it. But, I do have a favor.

Vicki-Ann: Sure. What?

Alex: Next time you write about us, could you give me a car? I’d like to drive sometimes too.

Vicki-Ann: Deal.

Publisher: Creative James Media
ISBN: 978-1-956183-42-9
Number of pages: 316

The dead need him.

Seventeen-year-old Alex McKenna is a transgender boy who comes from a rich history of Strega witches. Possessing the ability to communicate with the dead, he uses his talents and understanding of what it means to be different to bridge the gap between the living and the beyond. With his girlfriend Margaret and his spirited great-grandmother by his side, Alex helps lost souls resolve their earthly connections and move on.

When a series of murders plagues his neighborhood, Alex discovers the gruesome truth behind a sixty-year span of deaths and the sinister being responsible.

Will Alex save the next victim and stop the murderer for good? Or will this be his final case?

Excerpt:
The shadow slowly turned its attention to Alex. He stood tall, not showing the fear that was ravaging his body.
“Alex, be careful,” warned his mom.
“It’s okay.” Alex stood firm.
The dark figure let out an ear-piercing screech, and Alex buried his head in his jacket. Again, it changed its focus and twisted toward the back seat of the car—Wilby. It held the statue down toward the earth, and the car started to rock back and forth.
“Wilby!” his mom screamed as she struggled to break free.
Alex’s heart pounded; the death freeze of the dark spirit was coming, and it was very close.
“Ma, that thing is summoning the beast!” Alex’s voice dripped with fear.
“Alex, I don’t know what to do. I can’t move. Is Wilby still sleeping?”
“Yes.”
“Good.” She wiped her upper lip with her sleeve. “What if he wakes up?”
The vibration in his front pocket distracted him. Alex slipped out his phone; his gram’s picture lit up like a beacon.
“Gram, we’re in trouble,” Alex whispered.
“I know. Listen carefully, Bonzetta. Tell your mother we are going to use the prayer of light. I will do what I need from here.”
“What do I do?” Alex’s palms dripped with sweat from anxiety, and he nearly dropped the phone.
“Just repeat what we say, okay?”
“Okay.”
He didn’t want to shout their plan, so he texted it to his mom. “Ma, look at your phone.”
She slipped it out of her purse and read the message. Then, nodding in agreement, she waited.

I’d have said so in the past, and my first publishers has to drag me kicking and screaming into doing any revision at all. But when IFWG Publishing wanted to republish my Ferren books, it was me that insisted – ‘I don’t want a reprint, I want to do a total rewrite’. It was a golden opportunity, and I grabbed it with both hands.

I don’t often tell the long history of Ferren and the Angel, because the book has never been published in the US until now, so it would be confusing to talk about earlier versions that nobody would’ve heard of. So I talk about the dream of a battle between Heaven and Earth that inspired the novel and about all the research into angelology needed to fill out the background behind the angel who was shot down and crashed to Earth in my dream. But I don’t explain how the first version was an adult fantasy written in the present tense, nor about the first YA version (dropping the sex scenes that weren’t working!) published by Penguin Australia and sold only in the Australian market.
Still, Penguin’s a reputable publisher and might have resold the novel to the US and internationally, as Allen & Unwin in Australia did for my Worldshaker a few years later. But I fell into the gap between changing editors at Penguin, and although Ferren and the Angel received rave reviews, it never took off in the way I thought it deserved to. Of course, I’m the author, so you’d expect me to think like that! But I wasn’t the only one. The book gained a following of fans, not big in number but big in devotion and determination. They absolutely refused to let the book die!

So they kept plugging away and plugging away … and twenty-three years later, after Penguin had let the book go out of print, they were still pushing other publishers to do a reprint. Isn’t it great, how people who really believe in something can make it happen? IFWG Publishing took up the idea and made me an offer.

Over twenty-three years, though, I’d come to see that the story could be told better. The worldbuilding was what everyone had loved. In Ferren’s world, a war between Heaven and Earth has been raging for a thousand years, whole continents have been devastated and laid waste, a War Council of great archangels has taken charge on the celestial side, while the armies of the Earth are made up of artificially created Humen. Meanwhile, the original human beings, like Ferren and his tribe, have been reduced to a beaten-down, survival level of existence …

The fans who loved Ferren and the Angel loved that world, and loved the further developments in the second and third books of the trilogy, leading up to the ultimate invasion of Heaven by the Humen armies! And I never wanted to lose any of that – only to make it more tightly coherent, because I’d never planned the trilogy as a whole. Ferren and the Angel was originally a standalone. So that’s one thing I’m doing as I rewrite all three books.

But it's mainly the story that’s growing stronger, I believe. It launches off from the same episode, when Ferren sees an angel crash to Earth, goes out to investigate and finds her lying damaged and unable to fly. The unique friendship that forms between the two of them is still at the core of Ferren and the Angel and its sequels. But I feel I’ve learned to be a better storyteller over twenty-three years! I always suspected there were imperfections in first version Ferren and the Angel – now I can see what they are, and put them right.

My most important motto for the rewrite has been, ‘Not only world, but story too’. It’s not enough to introduce and display all the amazing features of this vast world – I have to keep the story surging forward at the same time. With Ferren and the Angel, the big change involves Ferren’s quest to find out what really happens to the tribespeople that the Humen take away for ‘military service’ – because his own sister was taken away, and he’s never heard from her again. That’s his motive for breaking into and exploring the Humen Camp, and the truth he discovers now has maximum impact – it’s a shock revelation!

The beauty of all the changes I’ve made is that I don’t think I’m importing anything that wasn’t there as a hint or a potential in my first-attempt version. It’s more like bringing out what was always there but obscured – like taking a lump of raw mineral and working away to reveal the statue that was always hidden within. That truly is the best feeling!!

I feel very, very lucky to have been given a second chance with the Ferren books. I wouldn’t want to rewrite any other books, but the Ferren books truly deserved a whole new effort – and the old versions are now far enough in the past that I could feel as inspired and excited as if I was writing them for the very first time. I’ll be forever grateful to to my never-say-die fans who made it happen!
