Genre: Paranormal Romance
She’s a down on her luck barback who’s had it with lions.

He’s a lion king who has thirty days to find his queen.

Life’s a rollercoaster, though, and it’s full of surprising turns ...

Lion, the future king of the lion prides in the U.S., only has thirty days to find his future queen and secure their fate. But Lion has his work cut out for him.

Jules has had it with shifters, and male lions in particular. She doesn’t need a man, even if he is a king, to mess up her life any more than her brother already has. Tired of being used and manipulated by others, she’s not just going to roll over and think of England.

It’s a good thing Lion’s not a slam-bam-thank-you-ma’am, Tennessee man. Our king’s about to show his queen that while life can sometimes be a bit of a rollercoaster ride, the best thing you can do is lock in tight and throw your hands in the air—and live.

He's a redneck with a tribe to lead.

She's a wedding planner who wants her HEA.

Two souls. Lots of differences.

But they'll find a home in each other...

Spider is a family man down to his core. He’s spent his life trying to live up to the expectations of being the future king of the Arachnid tribe. Now that his tattoo’s gone dark—it’s time to find his queen. Only he’s got cousins he needs to get down from trees, long-lost relatives popping out of the woodwork, a shady construction company cheating his people of their land, and a queen who’s more designer than she is redneck.

Sugar, and spice, and everything nice …

Chantelle is a Beaumont. Through and through. Or at least that’s the image she’s taught herself to project to the world. Done with trying to be perfect, she wants a family, a home, and for her king to show her there’s more to living than working and trying to be someone she’s not. More than this, she needs to believe in herself and that she has something to offer as queen.

Chantelle and Spider might start off rocky but they both know that the steady in life doesn’t come easy. Steady comes when two people are together and showing each other that home isn’t a place, work isn’t your life, and what they offer each other goes deeper than material things. The real steady, as both Spider and Chantelle have learned, is in laughter and antics and knowing to your soul that the person you’re with is your home.

It’s a good thing these Nashville Shifter Kings know how to convince a woman he’s in it for the long haul.

Shark’s got a lot on his plate, but he’s about to find that Lexie is his complement in all things. He asked for a queen, and he’s getting one with fire, with sass, and with more power than he ever thought possible.

He’s a bad boy with a past he can’t shake.

She’s a good girl who’s sick of drawing the short straw.

They’re obviously a match made in shifter heaven—if only she can forgive his heartbreaker history.

Two months ago, Poison Yaeger had the best night of his life—then he ran. Now, he’s set to be king of the wolves and, the once bad boy knows whom he wants as his queen … the same woman he left alone in bed two months earlier.

Callie Hartwood, better known as Doc has always done the “right” thing. Being kidnapped changes a girl, though, and she makes a promise to herself. Her vow: She's done being a good girl. She's not a dog to be praised for rolling over. She’s a puma shifter. She’s got claws. And she’s no longer afraid to use them.

She’s going to be bad.

And Poison wants to show her how. His lessons, however, aren’t just for fun. He intends to win his queen, and he wants Callie to know that he may be a bad boy, but he’s the only man for her.

A good girl + a bad boy + a psycho witch + sexy kings + sassy queens (phew!) = a Shifter Kings Nashville finale to remember!

Book Reviews: X-Ops Exposed (X-Ops #8) by Paige Tyler

X-Ops Exposed (X-Ops #8)
by Paige Tyler
April 3, 2018
Paperback, 384 pages
Sourcebooks Casablanca

Lion hybrid and former Army Ranger Tanner Howland retreats into the forests of Washington State to be alone—he’s too dangerous to be around people. He had to leave the love of his life behind but little does he know, she followed him.

Dr. Zarina Sokolov has an anti-serum she hopes will make Tanner human again. But before she can convince him to take it, they discover he isn’t the only hybrid that survived the experiment. And there are people who want to use the hybrid shifters for sport, pitting them against each other for money. But does Tanner have what it takes to save his fellow hybrids and Zarina—or will he lose control again?

Eight books, can you believe it? Eight books into Paige Tyler’s X-Ops series and things are going in a direction that could lead to a major battle for survival. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m excited.

Tanner has been a character that I’ve wondered about since he stepped onto the pages of the first book. As a shifter hybrid, Tanner was created in a lab and therefore had most of the characteristics of the hybrids. He was stronger and faster than natural born shifters but like other hybrids, he was also wild, uncontrollable, and very dangerous. But he also had a deep connection with Zarina, a doctor that was being held prisoner along with him. Their connection has been shown in all the books leading up to this one and it really is a special one.

Throughout the series, Zarina has been trying to help Tanner control his more savage urges and for the most part, it had been working, until an event forced Tanner to unleash his hybrid side and he accidentally attacked a friend. That freaked him out enough that he left the DCO where he’d been staying to live in the woods. Naturally, Zarina followed him and was almost mauled by a bear until Tanner showed up to chase it off. Zarina stubbornly refused to leave him and Tanner has no choice but to keep her with him. Not that it’s a hardship, these two have always shown how much they care for each other even if they never officially crossed the line into lovers until now. Of course, nothing is ever easy and soon they find out that Tanner wasn’t the only hybrid survivor and that humans now want to use them for sport, pitting hybrid against hybrid for money.

Fans of the series already knew Tanner and Zarina were deeply in love but the thing was these two characters hadn’t openly admitted it to anyone. X-Ops Exposed did justice to their relationship by first showing just how special and deep their connection ran. Zarina was the sole calming influence on Tanner’s otherwise dangerous hybrid side and Tanner brought Zarina comfort and solid friendship. Paige Tyler then puts these two in situations where they spent a lot of time alone together without the prying eyes of the DCO and their shifter friends. Their romance seemed so natural and so right while at the same time hot and sexy. It was during their moments together that you get to see a more lighthearted, charming side of Tanner. He’s happy for once whereas before he had this sense of doom around him. After eight books of him being Mr. Negative/Emo, I did a double take at the new side of him. It was refreshing and kept the character from feeling stale and becoming predictable. As did the setting for this book.

X-Ops Exposed takes readers away from the DCO to see how “The Other Half Lives” aka shifters and hybrids who weren’t picked up by the DCO and are having to scratch a living for themselves in hiding. I’m hoping that the hybrids have a larger role to play in future books since they’ve been popping up so much recently.

With eight books down, there are a lot of characters at this point and I’m sure many more to come. I enjoyed the quick “check-ins” with most if not all the characters from previous books and I just realized that up until this point I haven’t had a favorite couple from this series. This is unheard of for me! By this time in a series, I usually have a stand out favorite but the series is so much fun and the characters have all been on equal standing with me that I haven’t said: “Oh my gosh this one is my favorite!” They all have something special.

As it has been since the beginning, I enjoyed this book. It was definitely more on the romantic side because Tanner and Zarina’s emotions have been building up in the background of previous books and if you’re a fan of longing, friendship, and love then X-Ops Exposed might end up being your favorite in the series.

Paige Tyler’s paranormal romances are easy on the reader and that’s part of their appeal in my opinion. There’s more emphasis on characters, romance, and plot than on saturating it with paranormal aspects. I love that I can get my dose of paranormal without getting a headache with massive info dumps about species of creatures, histories of those creatures, feudal families, etc. The X-Ops series is straight up romantic suspense with paranormal elements. That means that each book can easily be read as a standalone but I will admit that readers will get the most out of them if they’re read in order.

Marco (Taming the Lion) loves the darkness and warmth of the Cave of Whispers. After Alicia healed him deep in the cave, it’s always held a special place in his heart. He’d love to take a sleeping bag or two, hike deep into the cave, and spend alone time with Alicia. Bonus points if they can make a night of it.

Bear shifters exist.

Professor Bria Lane has known this since she was a child. Now she’s returned to the forests of Deep Creek to prove it to the world. She has no idea how close she is to that proof in ruggedly sexy park ranger Derek Poole. Intimately close. But uncovering Derek’s wild side comes with a shattering price.

Like a magnet meeting metal, Derek is drawn to Bria. His destiny. His mate. So beautiful and so vulnerable. So dangerous, too: an encroachment of lions, vengeful and vicious, is closing in and they’re ready for war. Now is not the time to be distracted like a lovesick cub.

If Bria reveals the truth of the Deep Creek shifters to the world, she’ll bring out the worst of both sides. But Derek can’t hide his secrets from the love of his life forever. He knows they’re playing with fire – and that when passion runs this hot, this reckless, someone’s bound to get burned.

Now the one thing that stands to threaten their healing mating hunger is Olivia's distrusting and vigilant pack. A pack prepared to do anything to get her back.

REVIEW:
KISS OF THE VIRGIN QUEEN was from start to finish a very satisfying read. With a very unique tale, taking the reader from the present day action to biblical years past. There is a big serving of present day tech-savvy female doused with political intrigue, including ancient kings and queens. I found many of the religious history in the story riveting. The author does a nice job of creating adventure, and steamy hot romance, all set to that paranormal beat! This one was vamp free, but I didn't care.

The only major drawback for me may well be the history pages of this tale, they drew me in more then the present portion. When the story went back to the present I was racing ahead to jump back in the timeline. I did enjoy the past more then the present. But that's just my taste! It may be too much movement for those that don't like, or enjoy, a story that goes back and forth. If you're not into time-travel types of tales, you may want to read other reviews first.

Overall, some strong writing, romance for us junkies and a very original plot make this an entertaining read!

Excerpt: Chapter One
Summertown, West Virginia, U.S.A., Present Day

A picturesque flight over the Appalachian Mountains to Summertown, West Virginia gave Special Agent Eliana Solomon of the Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate, Anomaly Defense Division time to process the urgent report she’d received by email. Up until this week, the existence of werewolf packs had been concealed from the general population. Now reports of the secretive shape shifters exploded in her inbox. Where had this information been all this time? Had the government monitored them all along? If so, why had her boss, Bert Blackfeather, insisted on her obtaining proof of their existence, along with the jinnis? She’d pry an answer out of that closed mouth man—someday. Right now, she had a more pressing matter at hand.

Five days ago, three nine-year-old werewolf boys and their three eighteen-year-old sisters went on a birthday expedition in the heavily wooded state wildlife area and disappeared. By day, local human authorities, volunteers, and bloodhounds brought in from surrounding jurisdictions combed the forest, the hills, and caves. By night, pack members ran through the forest using their extraordinary senses—olfactory, visual, and auditory—to hunt for their missing kin. Divers also explored the waterways, all to no avail. No clues to the kids’ whereabouts had been found, not even a backpack—until two this morning.

A night security guard discovered the boys in the middle of the Adalwolf Winery parking lot. Slightly bruised and scratched up, but otherwise alive and well, in their human forms, the youngsters had no recollection of anything between arriving at the park and waking up in the parking lot with their back packs under their heads—their five-day-old lunches untouched.

Rushed to the ER and examined thoroughly, the boys displayed no evidence of physical abuse. The blank space in their minds where the memories should have been was inaccessible to parents and psychologists. If it weren’t for the fact that the three older girls were still missing, the local authorities wouldn’t continue to press the boys for information. Over time, their memories could return, but without ransom notes, calls or clues, the clock was running down for a successful search and rescue. The local police, state troopers, sheriff’s office, and the West Virginia Bureau of Investigation feared the operation would soon become a search and recovery.

The plane touched down, bounced along the runway, and Eliana’s cell began to vibrate.

“Solomon.”

The gruff voice of her boss boomed in her ear. “New development in the case.” Blackfeather paused. “A hiker found one of the missing girls in a culvert near an abandoned mine. Bites, claw marks. Throat ripped open. Damn thing nearly tore her head off.”

She shuddered. “Black bear?”

“Based on the paw prints around the body, the first responders are saying these weren’t bear bites. More like a dog—or wolf.”

“Boss, aside from zoos and wild animal preserves, there are no wolves in the eastern U.S.”

He sighed. “I stand corrected. Werewolf.”

Her stomach lurched, and she gripped the armrest so hard her knuckles turned white. Shit. Shit. Shit. A werewolf attacking one of its own? Why? What the hell was going on?

“West Virginia Division of Homeland Security has a car waiting for you, fully loaded with everything you’ll need for the investigation. Get to that scene.” Her boss clicked off.

Bossy desk jockey.

A flush of shame rushed over her. He’d taken on the orphan Anomaly Defense Division of the Science and Technology Directorate that no one else wanted, along with a mission no one else supported or believed in. As abrupt and abrasive as he could be, the Gulf War veteran deserved credit for giving her the opportunity to pursue what everyone else thought was something out of the tales of The Arabian Nights: jinnis. With the needed proof of werewolves and jinnis from Project Aladdin, support surged into the division. A stable funding source made her jinni hunting work possible So far, it seemed wherever there were werewolves, there was jinni activity.

This case was no different. According to the report, relationships between the local humans and werewolves were more than cordial. They were so intermarried, almost everyone was family. A large non-denominational wedding facility placed Summertown on an international list of destination weddings, like Hawaii and Las Vegas, but specifically for werewolves. A thriving bed and breakfast trade supported the wedding industry, along with other leisure activities, such as biking, hiking, white-water rafting, and winery and sightseeing tours. Murder of a werewolf girl wasn’t just bad for the family, it was bad for the town.

He needs to discover the mystery surrounding her. But the felines he houses--lion, tiger and jaguar--want him to get close to her for another reason. Jasmine is special, both for how she affects him and for the treasure she's been guarding.

Review

Rafe Alexander is a shifter who houses three felines – lion, tiger and jaguar. He has lived for five centuries and works for Shifter Affairs. As part of Shifter Affairs, a government agency, he helps stop shifter trafficking rings where shifters are kidnapped for numerous different uses and none are pleasant.

This book was hot and steamy and the passion between Rafe and Jasmine was explosive! Rafe is everyone woman’s dream of unimaginable great sex. If you aren’t one to like a nice, long sex scene than this is not the book for you. But for those of you that have a good imagination than you will love the romance in this book.

I did not read the Kagan Wolves prior to reading this book and you should be fine starting the series here instead of back with the Kagan Wolves series if you want to.

Excerpt #1

“Don’t get any crazy ideas. I am not going out with any of your husband’s friends. No more blind dates, thank you very much.”

“You don’t need any help from me. Once you drop the ‘stay away from me’ glare you usually wear around members of the opposite sex, you’ll have no problem picking up a guy.” Cindy tapped a single finger against her chin. “We might even have to beat them off you, especially if you display your goods a little more.”

She tugged at Jazz’s shirt until the lacy edge barely covered her nipples.

Jazz gasped and slapped away her friend’s hands. She quickly righted her top and glared at Cindy. Jazz hated her goods. Her breasts were too big for her frame, but genetics was a crapshoot. You got whatever the DNA mixing bowl dished out.

“Stop it. I am not enticing any lewd perverts with a showing of my goods.”

Cindy raised her hands. “Just promise me you’ll keep an open mind.”

She bit back her sharp retort. Cindy meant well. It wasn’t her fault Jazz had to keep men at arm’s length. It wasn’t Jazz’s either, but those were the facts. Time for another lie. What was one more?

“Fine. The next hot guy who shows any interest in me…” I’ll ignore just like I did with the blond hunk Josh was talking with. She inwardly rolled her eyes at the ridiculousness of her lame fib. “…will be the one I take home.”

“Now that’s an offer I can’t resist.”

Jazz pivoted. A wide expanse of muscle filled her vision. She followed the ridges of his stomach lower. His narrow waist met lean, denim-covered hips. Openmouthed, she stared at the growing bulge in his pants. An answering spark of arousal lighted within her. Shivers of awareness, the same ones that had skipped down her spine a few minutes ago (omitted last part of this sentence because this is a PF-13 site and OH DEAR!)

She glanced into his face. Exotic, uptilted honey-brown eyes were framed by long blond lashes. Beautiful and downright captivating.

His full lips, parted slightly, glistened as if he’d licked them. She swiped her tongue across her suddenly dry ones.

“Am I hot enough for you?” He rubbed his thumb over the corner of her mouth. “Because I’m interested. Very, very interested.”

Her other interests include tattoos, animals, classic cars and all things spooky and sexy.
