Review: Amber & Blue And The Hunt For DNA

‘This lighthearted, easy to navigate and factual graphic novel… is the perfect introduction to genetics.’

As an – ahem – creative artist, I never thought I’d enjoy reading a science book on DNA, but I did. I totally loved reading this book!

A graphic novel that turns identical twins Amber and Blue into teeny tiny human beings, this book follows their quest to seek out, investigate and understand a human cell, in a close-up and personal way – by going inside it!

Author/biologist Claudia Flandoli’s secret superpower is being very, very FUNNY while explaining complex ideas about genetics and DNA - which she does through fabulous illustrations, fantastic characters and lots of audience asides.

Review: Aggie Flea Is NOT A Liar

Move over, Barbie - there’s a new girl rocking the pink all over town, and hers is fluoro!

Meet Aggie Flea, whom you will immediately fall for,  because she’s inquisitive, imaginative and completely inept in most situations. Really, she’s a bit like Anne of Green Gables in that she never intends to be troublesome but somehow always ends up being so.

Aggie is ten, lives with her long-suffering mother and older teen brother, Jack, who thinks he’s the man of the house now that their dad has moved to London.

Review: Dirt By Sea

Have you ever been travelling around Australia, or had the hankering to? This book will not only indulge that craving, it might even have you packing your bags.

Dirt By Sea is a brilliant large-page comic picture book with 40 glorious pages about a girl and her father adventuring around Australia.

Daisy lives in outback Queensland when whilst listening to the national anthem realises – what on earth does ‘dirt by sea’ mean?

Her dad explains that it is ‘girt by sea’ meaning they are surrounded by the ocean. Daisy walks outside and says – hold up, we are surrounded by dirt!

Review: Ginger Meggs

Iconic Australian literary character Ginger Meggs is celebrating his 100th birthday and you are invited back into his larrikin world with the release of four new adventures.

Created by Jimmy Bancks in 1921, his great great nephew, Tristan Bancks picks up where he left off. These stories are illustrated by the current cartoonist of the Ginger Meggs comic strip, Jason Chatfield.

Originally syndicated in over 100 daily newspapers in Australia and the world. Ginger Meggs is one of the oldest running comic strips in the world.

These four new rambunctious adventures showcase Ginger Meggs and his friends as fun-loving larrikins who always find themselves in trouble one way or another.

One of the stories, Dead Man’s Hill finds Ginger and his best mate Benny debating over claims made by snooty sneak Eddie Coogan. Eddie reckons he rode all the way down Dead Man’s Hill in his billycart with no problems. So up for a challenge the two friends build their own death-defying cart and attempt the hill.

Review: The Odds

Kip likes to go unnoticed – it’s easier if everyone simply ignores you. She likes the quietness of staying in the shadows and the city outside is so loud.

What happens when your favourite characters come to life and step out of their worlds to interrupt your quiet unobtrusive life? The answer is mayhem, chaos and embarrassing situations.

How do you explain a race car driver leaving his video game, or a dragon-hunting rabbit leaving his comic strip or a dinosaur from Kip’s nightmares?

Kip hopes she is dreaming and that she will wake up soon, but that doesn’t look that will happen in a hurry.

All Kip and her Dad need to do is come up with a plan to get the characters back to where they come from.

12 Curly Questions with author/illustrator Jules Faber

1. Tell us something hardly anyone knows about you.
I’m really quite good at MarioKart

2. What is your nickname?
I don’t have one, but I always wanted a cool one as a kid.

3. What is your greatest fear?
Going bald.

4. Describe your writing style in 10 words.
Eclectic thoughts, funnelled into a narrative and distilled into paragraphs.

5. Tell us five positive words that describe you as a writer.
Ambitious, enthusiastic, driven, tangential, reflective

6. What book character would you be, and why?
Last time, I said Max of the Where the Wild Things Are. But today I’d be the Phantom. I’ve read this comic since I was a kid and his world is so fantastic, plus he has an unerring sense of justice. Not to mention his unique trait – he’s a superhero all the time and only dresses like a regular person to blend into the crowd.

Guest Post: Peter Millett on The Invincibles: Down Under's New Superhero Team!

I was inspired to create my new series The Invincibles after realising that we hardly hear about superhero teams from the Southern Hemisphere these days. Why is that?

North America has Captain America and his epic buddies, and the UK has Captain Britain and his super sidekick Jackdaw. But we’re yet to see a Captain Australia or Captain Kiwi defending truth, justice and our sunny, beach-loving way of life in the 21st century.

I find this strange as our big screens are dominated by Aussie and Kiwi actors portraying some of the greatest superheroes of all time.

As a kid I soaked up all the Marvel and DC comics I could get my hands on, but I would never in a million years have dreamt that so many of the amazing characters and story lines would one day be brought to life by people who talked with the same accent as I did.

It’s beyond cool!

Over time these thoughts led me to the creation of my new series for 7-9 year olds, The Invincibles. In 2016, after I finished writing my last Johnny Danger adventure I explored the option of creating a brand new superhero series for kids.

I tossed ideas back and forth with Scholastic until we settled on the perfect mix of having a super ‘sporty’ team of heroes.

Sport plays a massive role in life Down Under. We’ve produced the best ever cricket teams, rugby teams, hockey teams, netball teams, swim teams, Davis Cup teams, rowing teams etc. and we’ve also conquered the world’s tallest mountain! Sporting heroes are in our DNA it would seem.

I’ve channelled this love of sports into the heart of The Invincibles. While larger than life characters like Thor stomp around giving off a serious Viking/Nordic vibe, my characters suit up with second-hand protective vests found in the lost property bin at the local footy club, and don mouth guards and lightweight foam-padded head protectors instead. It’s a laid-back approach of tackling superherodom.

The Invincibles receive their super powers while innocently running across a footy field and being struck by a colossal bolt of lightning that lights up them, the goalposts and the club sports clock. Because they inherited their powers on a footy field, their usage is governed by the same 80 minute time limit that you would find most NRL, AFL or Rugby teams subject to. This unique twist supplies each book with a ‘ticking time’ deadline plot to help keep reluctant readers engaged throughout. It also gives my heroes a tricky to manage weakness too.

The Invincibles are a mixture of sporty boys and girls who don’t naturally gel once they inherit their all-powerful abilities. But they soon learn that they are stronger together and that their success depends entirely on teamwork not individuality.

To keep up with the epic Marvel and DC themes I so enjoyed as a young reader I’ve given The Invincibles a super-charged Hollywood style trailer. And each book comes with a set of limited edition superhero collector cards at the back of it.

Hopefully kids across Australia and New Zealand will enjoy reading about the sporty adventures of The Invincibles, and I’m sure that only Antipodean readers will truly understand how cool it is to have a team’s mascot being a super sheep who can fly!

Peter Millett is a New Zealand children's author. His books include the Johnny Danger series and The Anzac Puppy picture book. Review: Where's Halmoni?

Wow this book is different! The front cover's style hints at an influence of traditional Asian woodblock art. The cover made me stop, wanting to find out what kind of story was inside.

Instantly the cartoon strip storytelling technique, of a graphic novel come picture book, drew me into the story. Where's Halmoni? is told by Julie Kim who has combined adventure and mystery with traditional Korean folktales from her childhood.

Who is Halmoni? Even without an English translation of Korean, readers learn from the end-papers and the first illustrated page that Halmoni is a Grandmother.

Junior Review: Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot

This is the last book from Dav Pilkey called Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-a-lot

In this book, we meet George and Harold again and this time they must save the children of the planet from their gym teacher Mr Meaner, who is turning them into slaves. They time travel to the future, find their older selves and the four of them travel back in time to get help from Captain Underpants.

This book is an easy read because it has lots of pictures and easy words, therefore I recommend this book for girls and boys aged 8-12.

Junior Review: Ghosts

In the book Ghosts, Catrina has just moved to a new town called Bahia de la Luna in California because her little sister, Maya, has breathing problems and the doctor said that the wind could help with that.

One gloomy day they set out to explore the town and meet this crazy boy called Carlos. He tells them that there are ghosts in the area and that, if you give a bit of yourself, then you might be able to talk to them. He totally creeps Catrina out, but Maya just wants to go and find them.

This story really inspired me that you don’t have to see something to believe its real. The book really moved me, and I thought that it was one of the best books I’ve ever read! I would recommend Ghosts to girls aged 8 – 12.
