The ruling People Power Party (PPP) will propose a separate bill for a special counsel investigation that “removed unconstitutional elements” regarding impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol’s Dec. 3 martial law declaration, PPP floor leader Rep. Kweon Sung-dong said Tuesday.
"The PPP can never accept the main opposition party's unconstitutional 'insurrection and treason special investigation bill,' which passed the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee yesterday," Kweon said during a press conference at the National Assembly.
"Our party will consult with the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) on the special probe bill as requested by acting President Choi Sang-mok," he said.
Calling the DPK’s special probe bill "an unconstitutional bill with too many toxic provisions," the floor leader said the party must prevent such inexorable legislation from passing.
"We urge the DPK to immediately stop its plan to push ahead with the unconstitutional special probe bill and start consulting with our party on the independent special probe bill," Kweon said.
He said the PPP will ask acting President Choi to exercise his right to boycott the DPK bill and demand the Assembly reconsider it.
On Dec. 9, the Yoon Suk Yeol Insurrection Special Probe Bill was proposed by a coalition of six opposition parties, including the DPK. The bill calls for a third party and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to recommend candidates for an independent investigation.
The bill also includes allegations of Yoon's treason charges, which were not included in the existing independent counsel law, in its scope for the investigation.
The opposition parties said Yoon is suspected of attempting to induce war or armed conflict by sending troops to disputed areas, operating loudspeakers directed at North Korea and sending leaflets in connection with the martial law imposition.
