Isekai is one of the most popular genres in modern-day anime, so it's no wonder that there are so many new isekai animes airing in 2024.

Let's take a look at some of the top isekai anime of 2024. Some are sequels to shows that have already proven themselves, like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and KonoSuba. Others are brand new shows. No Longer Allowed in Another World takes the famous author Osamu Dazai into a magical world, while Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord features an extremely memorable main character.

Which of these isekai transports your imagination to another world?

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Season 3)

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Season 3)

      • 8bit

    Release Date: April 5

Premise: With his battle with Clayman out of the way, Rimuru is ready to go full throttle as a demon lord. He takes the opportunity to start expanding his territory. To mark the occasion and form bonds with nearby territories, he throws a huge festival. But inviting the whole world also means inviting people who wish Rimuru and his community harm.

Why It's Worth Watching: Though some have complained that this season feels too slow, others have praised it for its nuanced take on community building. Whether or not you'll enjoy this season depends on whether you're enjoying the series for the action or for the clever and compassionate way Rimuru brings everyone together. Still, it's not like the season has no action - it's just not the whole point.

    Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy (Season 2)

    Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy (Season 2)
    • Photo:
      • J.C.Staff

    Release Date: January 8

Premise: After being rejected by the goddess who brought him into a fantasy world, Makoto Misumi has finally found a purpose for himself. He's dedicated to promoting acceptance for demi-humans. But while he's busy building a business that showcases their talents, he crosses paths with other heroes who were summoned by the goddess.

Why It's Worth Watching: Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy is a solid fantasy show with likable characters and plenty of action. Season 2 is similar to Season 1, so if you liked the first, you'll probably have a similar experience with the second. There's a little bit of drama, a little bit of comedy, and plenty of pretty art and animation. Additionally, it follows the manga pretty closely, which is always a plus.

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
    • Photo:
      • Shin-Ei Animation / Studio Add

    Release Date: January 6

Premise: Ken Usato is leading a dull life until he's transported to a magical world to be a hero alongside two of his classmates. But it turns out that Ken wasn't chosen as a hero - he was transported there by mistake. However, all isn't lost because he has an unexpectedly powerful affinity for healing. This means training under Rose, the captain of the kingdom's Rescue Team, which will be the hardest challenge he's ever faced.

Why It's Worth Watching: First of all, this series deserves credit for making the healer character male. That role is almost universally limited to female characters, so it's nice to see a change of pace. The plot and character development also proceed at a good pace without being too fast or too slow.

  • Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers
    • Photo:
      • J.C.Staff

    Release Date: April 8

Premise: After the Kingdom of Klyrode summons Banaza to be a hero, they quickly discover that he has abysmally low stats and no magical abilities whatsoever. The king banishes him to the edges of the world, no longer wanting anything to do with him.

After defeating a slime, he finally reaches Level 2. This unexpectedly gives him infinite stats, amping up his potential dramatically. Hoping to stay out of the battle between humans and demons, he disguises himself as a man named Flio… but he might have no choice but to get involved.

Why It's Worth Watching: Most isekai feature protagonists from the human world who are suddenly flung into fantasy worlds. This series is different in that Flio also came from a fantasy world. This means that his frame of reference for what is and isn't normal is completely different from that of most other isekai series.

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord
    • Photo:
      • Jumondo

    Release Date: January 9

Premise: All Yumiella Dolkness wants is to be left alone to practice her dark magic. But after being reincarnated into a game as the daughter of a count, all eyes are on her. This is amplified by the fact that she has black hair, which is heavily stigmatized in her world. She's well aware that she's meant to be the game's surprise boss, but she isn't into the idea at all. At least she's powerful enough to deal with it after working her way up to Level 99.

Why It's Worth Watching: Yumiella is an excellent protagonist. She's sharp, witty, and has a clear goal - being left the heck alone. She's in an otome game, but the series doesn't focus that hard on the machinations of the upper class. Instead, the focus is where it should be: on Yumiella.

The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash

The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash
    • Photo:
      • Studio Massket

    Release Date: January 12

Premise: At five years old, Femicia has her skills appraised at a local church. While she does have a monster tamer skill, that skill clocks in at zero stars. Those with zero stars are considered cursed, so she's ostracized not just by her community, but by her family too. After barely escaping from the mob chasing her, she disguises herself as a boy and changes her name to Ivy. Soon after, she befriends a slime and starts heading towards the capital under the advice of a fortune teller.

Why It's Worth Watching: Though it looks adorable, this is a story of survival in a dark world. Ivy is only five years old when she's cast out of her community. Real five-year-olds are just beginning to learn how to read and do basic math, but in this world, five-year-olds are expected to display magical powers or be eliminated. There are some serious stakes in this story, which keeps viewers watching.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Season 2 Part 2)

    • Photo:
      • Studio Bind

    Release Date: April 8

Premise: While Rudeus Greyrat is studying at the University of Magic, he reunites with his childhood friend Sylphiette. The two hit it off and decide to get married. Despite the wedding bliss, Rudeus still has problems to deal with, ranging from research failures to issues with his dad. Worst of all, he hasn't told his new bride where he really comes from.

Why It's Worth Watching: Though controversial, Mushoku Tensei is still one of the most popular isekai out there. It has gorgeous art, intricate world-building, and complicated characters. This season continues in the same vein as previous ones. If you're invested in the show so far, you'll probably enjoy this season too.

Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything with Low-Level Spells

Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything with Low-Level Spells
    • Photo:
      • Seven Arcs

    Release Date: July 5

Premise: When Mimori Touka and his classmates are suddenly transported to another world to be heroes, most of his classmates receive impressive magical abilities. The goddess who summoned them deems Mimori's abilities worthless, so she throws him into a dungeon. It turns out that his powers aren't worthless; they're just unconventional - and he plans to use them for revenge.

Why It's Worth Watching: One thing that really stands out about this series is its relatively accurate depiction of child abuse. Mimori doesn't just go through problems with his classmates; he also has a history of being severely mistreated by his parents. His reaction is to be as harmless and featureless as possible in the hopes of not being hurt. This carries over into his school life and into his life in the new world.

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Season 3)

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Season 3)
    • Photo:
      • Drive

    Release Date: April 10

Premise: After reuniting with his friends, Kazuma's party is ready to take on the Demon Lord. Well, sort of - Kazuma himself wants to avoid it for as long as possible. Additionally, they keep falling into traps, incurring debts, and dealing with other problems. Things change when they receive an invitation from a princess who is impressed with their alleged heroism.

Why It's Worth Watching: KonoSuba is well-known for being hilariously funny while also maintaining a strong plot. The characters are all varying levels of incompetent, which means they're constantly getting themselves into bizarre mishaps. It's a whole lot of fun.

As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World

As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World
    • Photo:
      • studio MOTHER

    Release Date: April 7

Premise: An office worker is reincarnated as Ars, the child of a noble family. As he gets older and discovers what his new world is all about, he realizes that they're probably on the brink of war. He's no fighter himself, but he does have one crucial ability - the power to instantly appraise someone else's skill level. Using this power, he starts to assemble the most powerful fighters he can, ignoring things like class and race that other leaders care about.

Why It's Worth Watching: This series has some effective world-building. It has a clear social system based on class and race which is, correctly, ignored by the main character. But the main character isn't perfect right away; he has to learn how to be an effective leader. Watching him grow and change is another thing that makes this series work.

No Longer Allowed in Another World

No Longer Allowed in Another World
    • Photo:
      • AtelierPontdarc

    Release Date: July 9

Premise: Osamu Dazai is a classic Japanese author known for his depressing works and his preoccupation with finding a woman to intentionally exit the world with. When he tries to do this with a woman named Sacchan, he ends up getting hit by the isekai truck and transported to another world. There, he manages to charm women despite constantly talking about death and making them drag him around in a coffin.

Why It's Worth Watching: Given the dark subject matter, this show isn't for everyone. But if you have a dark sense of humor, you'll love it. You'll also probably enjoy it if you're a fan of classic Japanese literature. The real Dazai led a miserable life and showcased it through his writing. This series amplifies those characteristics for comedic effect while also occasionally taking them seriously.

    Release Date: April 5

Premise: After passing away, Tomokui Kanata is reincarnated as Gobrou, the weakest goblin around. Luckily for him, he can use the memories from his past life, as well as an ability to get stronger through eating, to his advantage.

Why It's Worth Watching: One of the more interesting elements in this series is its harem. While harems are a common trope, they often end with the main character choosing one member of the harem, or they go on indefinitely without any moves toward real relationships. In this series, Gobrou not only establishes multiple relationships, but he also has children with the women in question. If nothing else, that's different.

  • My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered
    • Photo:
      • Okuruto Noboru

    Release Date: January 5

Premise: While taking a school trip, a bus full of students suddenly finds themselves in another world. A sage named Sion gives most of them the gift of magical powers but declines to give them to everyone. Those without powers are abandoned by the rest of the group.

One of these students, Yogiri Takato, discovers that he has an innate ability that lets him instantly annihilate anyone he wants. He hopes to use this power to take revenge on those who underestimated him and to find his way back to his own world.

Why It's Worth Watching: This series has repeatedly been compared to Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest, so if you like that show, you might also like this one. It features many of the same elements: a kid who gets treated terribly and comes back stronger and angrier than anyone would have expected. His power is truly dangerous, but it's sometimes approached in an almost comedic way.

Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools

Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools
    • Photo:
      • Typhoon Graphics, Imagica Infos

    Release Date: July 6

Premise: After working herself into a literal grave, Dahlia is reincarnated as the daughter of a magical toolmaker. She's looking at a bright future as a toolmaker and as the wife of her father's apprentice. But when her father suddenly passes away and her betrothed announces that he's in love with someone else, Dahlia realizes that she'll have to stand on her own two feet.

Why It's Worth Watching: In most isekai where an adult character is reincarnated as a child, they maintain their adult personality. That doesn't happen here. Instead, Dahlia's personality is shaped by biological reality: no matter what she's experienced, she has the body and brain of a little girl. This allows for some amusing and realistic moments where she endangers herself using tools. Also, it's a change of pace from the typical formula.

    Suicide Squad Isekai

    Suicide Squad Isekai
    • Photo:
      • Wit Studio

    Release Date: July 6

Premise: Supervillains from the world of DC Comics are tasked with conquering another world. Success will lead to major rewards, but failure could have serious consequences.

Why It's Worth Watching: While the actual isekai storyline is a little lackluster, the concept more than makes up for it. DC characters in anime form aren't the kind of thing you see every day - especially not beautifully drawn with great animation. This series is a spectacle: it doesn't always make sense, but the fights are on point, the characters are well-acted, and it's just a good time all around.
