13 New Slice of Life Anime Coming In 2019
- Photo:
My Roommate Is A Cat is about a reclusive mystery author who takes in a stray cat named Haru. Through this simple act, Subaru's dreary world begins to open up - now he has to take his cat to the vet, visit the pet store, and let other people pet her. Not only does having a cat require him to talk to people, but he also forms a genuine connection with Haru herself - the first familial he's had with anyone since his parents passed away. All that character development and emotional insight sound awesome - but the best part is that the show also depicts Haru's feline perspective. It's not just Subaru who needs Haru - she needs him, too.

- TMS Entertainment
Fruits Basket originally aired in 2001 as a beloved but incomplete adaptation of a manga by Natsuki Takaya. It follows Tohru Honda, an orphaned teenage girl who finds herself living with the Sohma family. She quickly finds out that the family is cursed - they transform into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac when embraced by a member of the opposite sex. While this might seem silly or adorable, it actually breeds isolation and abuse - the Sohmas are controlled by a despotic family head named Akito who decides where they'll work, who they'll marry, and everything else about their lives under threat of violence. Tohru decides that she isn't just going to live with the Sohma family - she's going to help solve their problems.

- Connect
Literature clubs are a common trope in slice-of-life anime, but Senryuu Shoujo offers a fun twist on the concept. The protagonist doesn't communicate using words - instead, she communicates using senryuu, a form of haiku. She isn't the only interesting character in the literature club - there's also a former delinquent trying to lead a straightforward life. This anime will follow their daily lives and club experiences.

Chihayfuru: Season Three
- Photo:
Chihayfuru is an underrated but excellent series about a teenage girl named Chihaya who is possessed by a singular goal - to be the greatest karuta player in the world. Building a team isn't easy, however, because not many people are actually interested in playing a card game based on classic Japanese poetry. What's more, her childhood friend who actually loves karuta refuses to continue playing. Season Three will see Chihaya continue her quest toward karuta glory.

Mob Psycho 100 II
- Photo:
Mob Psycho 100 is an incredible anime that brings together a variety of genres, including comedy, action, supernatural, and slice of life. Season Two continues the adventures of Mob, a twelve-year-old psychic who works under a surprisingly kind and helpful con artist in a ghost exorcism business. Together, the two of them tackle the challenges of everyday life - Mob is dealing with middle school crushes and popularity contests, while Reigen has to field worried emails from his mother about what he's doing with his life - but also take on supernatural enemies, and human beings who want to use their psychic powers for evil.
If you loved the first season, you can't miss the second one - it's even better.

Hitoribocchi no ○○ Seikatsu looks poised to be a more adorable and less disturbing version of Watamote, so if you liked the premise but felt like Tomoko needed to tone it down a notch, this may be the show for you. When she starts a new school without her best friend, she realizes that she's going to have to figure out how to make other friends, fast - especially since her friend doesn't plan to speak to her at all if she doesn't. Heads up, Aggretsuko fans, a new season is coming out in 2019! Though created by Sanrio, Aggretsuko's themes are best appreciated by working adults. It takes place in an office populated by cute anthropomorphic animals who have to deal with all the same problems that people have to deal with in real life, from romantic problems to workplace discrimination. Retsuko is a seemingly mild-mannered red panda who channels all of her frustration into hardcore metal karaoke. It's a surprisingly insightful show that's still every bit as adorable as it looks, so if you haven't seen the first season, now's the time to catch up.

Joshikausei

- Seven
Joshikausei is an all-new anime that offers a unique experience. Instead of using dialog, the show makes use of gestures, sound effects, and facial expressions to get its story across. While this technique might get a little tired if used in a plot-heavy series, it's perfect for a slice of life show. It's still not clear if this experiment will succeed, but it's not every day that the anime world serves up something that's rarely been seen in the past.

Hoshiai no Sora offers a slightly new spin on a well-worn concept. In order to save his high school tennis club, Touma Shinjou must recruit new members. He attempts to persuade a talented tennis player named Maki Katsuragi to join the team. Here's where it diverges from the kind of plotline one would expect - Maki is totally willing to join as long as he gets paid. With money on the line, how will things turn out for the tennis club?

Jimoto ga Japan

- Shonen Jump
If you're an anime fan, you're probably at least a little bit obsessed with Japan - but you almost certainly aren't as obsessed as the main character of Jimoto ga Japan. This guy is so obsessed with the nation's various prefectures that he not only demands to know where everyone he encounters hails from, he's also designed a new form of martial arts based on each prefecture. The original manga, which is currently being published in Shonen Jump, has yet to release a full volume but is already receiving an adaptation. Does that mean it's worth watching? Only time will tell.
