Disney's 1994 sports-fantasy Angels in the Outfield came in swinging with a team of stellar performers. While actors like Danny Glover and Christopher Lloyd were already seasoned all-stars as they joined this heartfelt film about a boy who asks for divine intervention to help his favorite baseball team make it to the World Series, this movie helped put rising stars like Joesph Gordon-Levitt and Matthew McConaughey in the big leagues.
Over the last three decades, many of the cast members of the heavenly classic have played the field in the entertainment industry, while others have left the fame game altogether. From Broadway productions and musical endeavors, to humanitarian awards and Academy Awards, here's what the stars of Angels have been up to since 1994.
Danny Glover was already a well-established actor when he played the role of Angels team manager, George Knox, and he continued to play the acting field with films like The Royal Tenenbaums, Dreamgirls, and Jumanji: The Next Level.
As of 2024, the 77-year-old lives a less action-packed life in San Fransisco as a political activist, receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022 for his charity work.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was just 13 years old when he took on the role of Roger Bomman, the young boy at the center of this film, with the ability to see angels. Prior to Angels in the Outfield, the rising child star already had a handful of film credits on his resume - including Beethoven and A River Runs Through It - marking the beginning of his budding career. In 1999, he starred in the teen comedy sensation, 10 Things I Hate About You, before graduating to critically acclaimed roles in films like (500) Days of Summer, Inception, and The Dark Knight Rises.
In 2013, he made his debut on the other side of the camera by screenwriting and directing Don Juan, which he also starred in. While enjoying a successful foray into directing and producing, he continues to star in movies - most recently teaming up with Eddie Murphy for the long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which hits Netflix July 3, 2024.
Brenda Fricker already had an Academy Award for My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown before playing Roger and J.P.'s loving foster mother on Angels in the Outfield. Perhaps most recognizable for her Oscar-less role of the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Fricker went on to star in films like Moll Flanders and A Time To Kill, alongside her Angels costar Matthew McConaughey.
After a hiatus from acting in the late 2010s, she recently returned to film in 2023 with The Miracle Club and also played a role in the TV miniseries The Catch.
Playing the cigarette-smoking pitcher, Mel Clark, in Angels in the Outfield, former Who's The Boss? star Tony Danza added to his television credits with roles on The Practice, Hudson Street, and his self-produced The Tony Danza Show. More recently, he appeared in episodes of Broad City, Blue Bloods, and HBO's And Just Like That... Danza has performed in a fair share of stage musicals, including The Producers and Honeymoon In Vegas.
In 2013, he reunited with Angels costar Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Don Jon. In 2024, the 73-year-old multifaceted entertainer can be found crooning through his golden years with his four-piece band.
Playing the head angel, Al, Christopher Lloyd gave a burst of star power into Angels in the Outfield. With some of his most acclaimed roles already behind him - including Doc Brown in Back to the Future, Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and Uncle Fester in The Addams Family - Lloyd went on to star in films with less commercial success like My Favorite Martian and Baby Geniuses. In 2014, he made a cameo as his Back to the Future role in the comedy film A Million Ways to Die in the West.
In 2024, the 85-year-old enjoyed reuniting with his former castmate, Michael J. Fox, autographing a still from the film for a contest.
When playing the owner of the Angels baseball team in Angels in the Outfield, Ben Johnson had already been acting for decades. Beginning as a horse wrangler and stunt double for Western legends like John Wayne and Gary Cooper, Johnson went on to act in a number of films, including She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Last Picture Show, the latter of which earned him an Oscar for best supporting actor.
Angels was one of Johnson's final projects. The 77-year-old passed away in 1996 and was laid to rest in his home state of Oklahoma.
Jay O. Sanders - Ranch Wilder
Before Angels in the Outfield, Jay O. Sanders' acting career began in the theater with a 1976 production of Shakespeare's Henry V. After playing sportscaster Ranch Wilder, Sanders landed big screen roles in films like Along Came A Spider, The Day After Tomorrow, and Revolutionary Road.
Further on post-Angels, he returned to the stage, starring in a hefty handful of Broadway and off-Broadway plays - including his self-written production, Unexplored Interior, which premiered in Washington, D.C. in 2015.
Milton Davis Jr. - J.P.
A young Milton Davis Jr. made his acting debut as Roger's foster brother, J.P., in Angels in the Outfield. Three years later, he landed a minor role in Mad City alongside Hollywood bigwigs John Travolta and Dustin Hoffman. Other than a couple guest appearances on shows like 7th Heaven and Sister, Sister, and a reprisal of his Angels role in a College Humor comedy sketch, Davis Jr. faded into acting oblivion in the 2000s.
After playing the team assistant, David Montagne, in Angels in the Outfield, Taylor Negron made a number of television appearances in popular '90s shows like Friends, ER, and Party of Five. Returning to the movies in the 2000s, he starred in a string of films including The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Gun Shy, and The in Crowd.
His final role was in the sci-fi drama, Alienated, in 2015. Sadly, he lost his battle with cancer that same year at the age of 57.
Neal McDonough, who played Angels pitcher Whitt Bass, went on to embrace being typecast as a villain throughout his acting career, to avoid doing intimate love scenes out of respect for his wife. He appeared in Season 5 of Desperate Housewives as the devious Dave Williams, then played villains in several more popular television shows like Yellowstone, Arrow, and Justified. At times, his commitment to his Cathloic faith caused him a bit of turmoil in Hollywood, though it never really slowed him down all that much.
In the 2020s, he is acting on his own terms and producing faith-based films with his wife of 20 years.
Dermot Mulroney played Roger's estranged, motorcycle-riding father in Angels in the Outfield. Over the next couple decades, he starred in a successful string of rom-coms, including My Best Friend's Wedding, The Wedding Date, and The Family Stone; he also made guest appearances on popular TV shows like Friends and New Girl. In his latest work, Netflix's Anyone But You, a dashing salt-and-pepper-haired Mulroney made the shift from leading actor to the supporting role of the love interest's father.
Outside of his acting work, Mulroney is an accomplished cellist. He toured with Alanis Morissette, and has played on blockbuster film scores like Spider-Man: Far From Home and Mission: Impossible III.
After playing ball as Danny Hemmerling on Angels in the Outfield, Adrien Brody went on to star in a number of critically acclaimed films. Most notably, he snagged an Oscar in 2003 for his moving portrayal of a Holocaust survivor in The Pianist. Just 29 years old at the time, he still holds the record for youngest actor to win the award. His acting career is still going strong.
In the 2020s, Brody's career is still going strong. He has appeared in films like Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, and Andrew Dominik's fictionalized take on Marilyn Monroe's life, Blonde, in which he delivered a spot-on performance of Arthur Miller.
After his breakthrough performance in 1993's Dazed and Confused, Matthew McConaughey played outfielder Ben Williams in Angels in the Outfield. Quickly going from unknown to A-lister, McConaughey racked up a lengthy film resume with a string of 2000s rom-coms - like How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days, Failure to Launch, and The Wedding Planner - as well as acclaimed dramas like Dallas Buyer's Club, which won him an Oscar in 2014.
In 2024, McConaughey is as big a name as ever. His next project is a crime thriller entitled The Rivals of Amziah King, which features a stellar ensemble, including Kurt Russell and Cole Sprouse.
