Now on to the interview!!

Morgan Rhodes Interview Two Chicks Interview 12/16/2016

Hi Morgan! First, I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! Thanks for stopping by to answer my questions! I love The Falling Kingdoms Series and CRYSTAL STORM was freaking awesome!

Thank you so much! Glad to be here!!

So for can you give us a quick recap of what has happened in the series?

A lot has happened, so a quick recap would be nearly impossible, especially if we want to avoid spoilers. However, I can say that there has been a battle for control over a kingdom named Mytica, which contains a legendary quartet of crystal orbs filled with elemental magic; there have been shaky alliances made between mortal enemies, unexpected love found, and great losses, as my main four characters, consisting of royals and rebelsMagnus, Lucia, Cleo & Jonasnavigate this rocky and treacherous terrain.

Can you tell us a little bit of what we can expect in CRYSTAL STORM?

Things are coming to a climax in the second to last book of the series, that’s for sure! Readers can expect unexpected twists, big romance, big battles, more magic, unusual team-ups, and a killer cliffhanger.

What is your favorite passage/scene from CRYSTAL STORM?

Not to sound evil, but I did enjoy writing the last cliffhanger chapter. Sorry readers! ;)

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Magnus is my favorite and has been since book one since he’s just so much fun to write since, even though I do write from an outline, he always surprises me with what he says and how he looks at the world. I don’t have a least favorite, but I will say that Lucia has been a challenging character since she is a girl who is (slowly) finding her footing and figuring out who she is and making tons of mistakes along the way. As we all do in our teen years!

Who is your ultimate Book Boyfriend?

I’d have to say this is a tie between Adrian Ivashkov and (yes, I’ll admit it) Edward Cullen.

What inspired you to write YA?

I’ve always been drawn to the genre. When I was a teen, that was when I read the most voraciouslyall sorts of genres. When I hit a reading slump as an adult, I found the YA genre and it reminded me of how much fun it is to read. This was when the YA section in bookstores consisted of about one shelf located at the far back of the store and most of the books were no more than 200 pages long. I wrote adult novels for a while under another name, but naturally gravitated back to YA and am loving it.

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

Right now I’m rereading all five Falling Kingdoms novels so I can finish writing book six. Sometimes I forget the little details, so I always skim through the previous books. Next up on my TBR, I’m dying to finally get a chance to read Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

The sorting hat at Pottermore.com was wise and placed me with my good friends at Slytherin. ;)

Twitter or Facebook?

Twitter

Favorite Superhero?

Wonder Woman

Favorite TV show?

Currently: The Walking Dead; of all time: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Sweet or Salty?

Any Phobias?

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

“Me Too” by Meghan Trainor

2017 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

Wonder Woman!

Thanks so much Morgan for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read CRYSTAL STORM!

Top Ten Tuesday (59)- My Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don't Get, the Love Interest Edition

Hi thanks for stopping by!!! And welcome to my Top 10 Tuesday post!

Thanks to the lovely ladies at The Broke And The Bookish for creating this weekly meme!

Here's this week's topic.

March 8: Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don't Get

I'm going to make this list more specific than just characters I don't like. I'm going to go with love interests.

1. Peeta from The Hunger Games series. Sorry y'all I just never saw his appeal. Although I never liked Gale either. I always loved Finnick *sobs*

2. Adam from the Shatter Me series. Team Warner all the way! I thought Adam was annoying.

3. Jonas from the Falling Kingdoms series. Yep Team Magnus all the way!

4. Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I'm probably going to get a lot of crap for this one but I truly do not like his character! I only kept reading the book for the other POV's. Especially Matthais and Nina.

5. Tamlin from Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Thorns And Roses. I preferred Lucien and Rhys.

6. Luc from Page Morgan's The Dispossessed series. I am definitely a Nolan girl!

7. Jack from Kresley Cole's The Arcana Chronicles. I can't stand Jack! I love Death (Aric).

8. Morpheus from A.G. Howard's Splintered series. Sorry don't get the appeal. Team Jeb for life!

9. Maxon from Kiera Cass's The Selection series. Probably going to get crap for this one too! But sorry I'm an Aspen girl. Also I DNF'd the last book because I figured out the ending and who she was going to end up with by page 13!

10. Jack from Brodi Ashton's Everneath series. Again I just don't get his appeal. I loved Cole from the moment I met him.

So what about you? What are your favorite fantasy books? And check back next week for my Ten Books On My Spring TBR.

Hugs,
Jaime

Now on to the post!

The Magic of Falling Kingdoms

When I was originally working on the worldbuilding for the Falling Kingdoms series, I had to decide what kind of magic would be found in Mytica. It didn’t take long before I realized that elemental magic was the right way to go. In a world that was going to be inspired by traditional high fantasy with a Roman-Greco flavor, including massive marble temples ode to goddesses, castles and villas, rebels and royals…the elements seemed to be ripe for the picking when it came to the hocus-pocus.

Still, I wanted the magic to be subtle, especially in the beginning. I wanted the books to have the gritty feel of a fantasy like Game of Thrones, but the thought of having super-powered witches and wizards flying around and battling each other felt far more…paranormal to me. So it seemed obvious that this magic – called “elementia” – had faded over the years…so much so that few believed it even existed outside of legend, apart from a few women accused of witchcraft, a crime that would have her thrown in the dungeon or executed. Many woman in our own world who have stood trial for witchcraft over the centuries, accused of dark deeds without any proof other than accusations. These women were definitely an inspiration for those in Mytica who were touched by magic but couldn’t summon enough of it to save their own necks.

I also felt that there needed to be That Thing that everybody wanted. And That Thing needed to be super powerful and would give whomever found it ultimate power – something worth fighting for, killing for, and maybe even dying for. And so the Kindred were created – four crystal orbs containing the purest essence of elemental magic: air, water, earth and fire. I always knew there would be a big twist to do with those crystals, but I wasn’t sure exactly what it would be in the beginning. Were they only a myth? Would they backfire on whomever tried to claim them? Or…were they much different than anyone would ever have believed them to be? Hopefully the Kindred twist (which I won’t reveal here since it’s definitely a spoiler for Gathering Darkness and beyond!) successfully surprised readers.

Another element of the magic and myth in Falling Kingdoms are the Watchers, immortal beings who “watch over” the mortal world and once guarded the Kindred, but now can only enter Mytica in the form of hawks. These Watchers have searched for the missing Kindred for a millennium without any success. Without these crystals, they claim, their world and all the worlds beyond will fade away, since without elemental magic, there is no life. I definitely wanted the immortals to be able to blend in with mortals, but also stand apart, so my inspiration for them was originally sparked by the elves of Rivendell in Lord of the Rings.

To bring it all together – the Kindred, the Watchers, and all the legends whispered about in Mytica – is the prophesy of the sorceress reborn, a mortal girl who will command all four parts of elementia as only the original sorceress was able to do a thousand years ago. This girl is said to be the one to find the Kindred. It’s her destiny. And it’s a destiny that King Gaius, also known to his subjects as the “King of Blood,” was fully aware of when he had Lucia stolen from her cradle as a baby and raised as his daughter.

Going into book four of Falling Kingdoms, FROZEN TIDES, Princess Lucia is well aware of this prophecy and her supposed destiny, and well aware of how she came to live in the king’s palace. And to say she’s not too thrilled about being lied to and manipulated for sixteen years would be a rather huge understatement.

Now the question is: will Lucia wield her unruly and unpredictable elemental magic for good or evil?

The answer to that is: keep reading! ;)

Happy reading!
Morgan

Oooooh and make sure to stick around and enter the epic giveaway for the first 3 books in the series!

Haven't heard of the FALLING KINGDOMS series Check it out!

Title: Falling Kingdoms

In a land where magic has been forgotten but peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest is simmering. Three kingdoms grapple for power—brutally transforming their subjects’ lives in the process. Amidst betrayals, bargains, and battles, four young people find their fates forever intertwined:

Cleo: A princess raised in luxury must embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of a magic long thought extinct.

Jonas: Enraged at injustice, a rebel lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country impoverished—and finds himself the leader of a people’s revolution centuries in the making.

Lucia: A girl adopted at birth into a royal family discovers the truth about her past—and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Magnus: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, a firstborn son begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword...

The only outcome that’s certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

Have you read the series? Make sure you pre-order FROZEN TIDES now! Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks

I don't want to spoil the book for everyone so you can go HERE to read the summaries for the other 2 books. And you can see the gorgeous covers above!

So Penguin Teen asked me, "Which fictional kingdom, region, or world you would conquer?"

Ok so I'm not the conquering type but I would love to live in Ixia or Sitia from Maria V. Snyder's Study and Glass books! I'd want to hang out with Yelena, Valek, Ari, and Janco. And since I'd be living in that world and Yelena would kill me for going after Valek I'd like to see if I could tame Janco and make him a one girl guy lol.

Now for Morgan's series I don't care where I live as long as Prince Magnus is there with me. Trust me you'll see why when you read the books lol.
