Top Ten Tuesday (83)- My Top Ten Characters I'd Name A Dog or Cat

Hi thanks for stopping by!!! And welcome to my Top 10 Tuesday post!

Thanks to the lovely ladies at The Broke And The Bookish for creating this weekly meme!

Here's this week's topic.

October 18: Ten Characters I'd Name A Child/Dog/Cat/Car/Etc.

I don't have kids nor will I be having any so these characters names will be for my future furbabies whether they be a dog or a cat. I tend to have more male animals so there will be more male names.

1. Valek or Janco from Maria V. Snyder's Study and Glass books! Valek if the animal is mysterious or aloof so most likely a cat and Janco if the animal is fun loving so most likely a dog.

2. Rhysand (Rys for short) from Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Thorns And Roses series.

3. Magnus from Morgan Rhodes's Falling Kingdom's series.

4. Zo from Jennifer Jenkins Nameless series.

5. Vhalla from Elise Kova's Air Awakens series.

6.  Irial from Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series.

7. Roar from Veronica Rossi's Under The Never Sky series.

8. Ash from Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series.

9. Darcy from Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice. Who would I be without my own Darcy?

10. Lestat from Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles series, not gonna lie I've wanted to name a cat Lestst for a long time lol

So what about you? What are your favorite character names? And check back next week for my Top Ten Halloween-ish reads!!

Top Ten Tuesday (65)- Ten Books I Picked Up On A Whim

Hi thanks for stopping by!!! And welcome to my Top 10 Tuesday post!

Thanks to the lovely ladies at The Broke And The Bookish for creating this weekly meme!

Here's this week's topic.

May 17: Ten Books I Picked Up On A Whim

A lot of these books are going to be from before I started blogging or when I first started. I haven't picked up a book on a whim in quite a while lol!

1. WICKED GAME by Jeri Smith-Ready. I found this at a used bookstore many years ago and loved the synopsis. It was a good thing too because I fell in love with this series!

2. THE PRINCESS IN THE OPAL MASK by Jenny Lundquist. I hadn't heard much about this one and I'm really glad I decided to read this awesome high fantasy!

3. INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE by Anne Rice. I was 15 and at a friends house who had this on their books shelf. I grabbed it and didn't put it down until I was finished.

4. THE CADET OF TILDOR by Alex Lidell. Another high fantasy that there was zero buzz for but there should have been! This book was fantastic!

5. POISON PRINCESS by Kresley Cole. When I got this ARC there was no buzz for it. I got it really early. And I'll admit I hated the first 13 chapters but ended up loving the book and am obsessed with this series!

6. THE GATHERING STORM by Robin Bridges. This was purely an impulse by I love fantasy and books about Imperial Russia so I knew I had to have this and I loved it!

7. ANATHEMA by K.A. Tucker. I had never heard of this book but I loved the cover and the description. I ended up loving it!

8. WICKED LOVELY by Melissa Marr. This was another cover love buy and I loved the series.

9. DARK LOVER by J.R. Ward. I was an a huge paranormal romance phase when I grabbed this and it did not disappoint.

10. THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins. Yes lol all you want but I had never heard of this series when I got the first book! I hadn't been reading YA for long and had been reading all paranormal. I grabbed this at Borders (sobs I miss Borders) wanting to try something different. And thank goodness I did.

So what about you? What are some of your go to websites? And check back next week for my Ten Books I Feel Differently About After Time Has Passed!

Hi and welcome to my Top 10 Tuesday post!

Thanks to the lovely ladies at The Broke And The Bookish for creating this weekly meme!

Here's this week's topic.

January 27: Ten Books I'd Love to Read With My Book Club/If I Had A Book Club!

I don't have a book club but if I did I would add these to our reading list for sure!

1. The STUDY & GLASS Books by Maria V. Snyder. It's my favorite High Fantasy seirs of all time so of course I would add this!

2. The WICKED LOVELY Series by Melissa Marr. Marr's take on Fae is still my favorite to this day!

3. The VAMPIRE ACADEMY and BLOODLINES Books by Richelle Mead. Two words. Adrian Ivashkov. Everyone needs to fall in love with him!

4. THE HUNGER GAMES Series by Suzanne Colins. I may have hated the ending to the third book but this series always makes for some interesting conversation.

5. The WVMP Series by Jeri Smith-Ready. This series is one of my favorite adult PNR's and I love how she ties music into it!

6. PERSUASION by Jane Austen and FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS by Diana Peretfreund. I loved Austen's and Peterfreund's books! I would love to read Persuasion and then Darkness and compare the two!

7. The FIRE AND THORNS Series by Rae Carson. My second favorite high fantasy of all time!

8. The HIS FAIR ASSASSIN Series by Robin LaFevers. My friends and I still talk about this series. We absolutely love it!

9. The CAHIL WITCH CHRONICLES by Jessica Spotswood. I love this historical paranormal and it has a lot of good issues to talk about.

10. The ACROSS THE UNIVERSE Series by Beth Revis. Probably one of my favorite sci-fi's of all time even though the last book did piss me off a bit. This one would be another great one to discuss!

So this is my list. What about you? What books would you have your book club read?

And come back next week for Top Ten Books I Can't Believe I Haven't/Want To Read From X Genre! I'm not sure what I'll do but it should be fun!

Top Ten Tuesday (4)- Top Ten Books I Want To Reread (or if you don't reread...would reread in an ideal world)

Hi and welcome to my Top 10 Tuesday post! Looks like I'll be sticking with this one for a while since I enjoy this meme!

Thanks to the lovely ladies at The Broke And The Bookish for creating this weekly meme!

Here's this week's topic.

November 4: Top Ten Books I Want To Reread (or if you don't reread...would reread in an ideal world)

This one is tough there are so many books I'd love to re-read! Most of these are complete series btw.

1. THE STUDY and THE GLASS Books by Maria V. Snyder. These are the only books I do re-read at least once a year. These are my all time favorite high fantasy books and I'm so excited that the Study series is continuing!

2. THE WVMP SERIES by Jeri Smith-Ready. One of the 2 adult series on my list! I freaking love these books and the characters Shane is on my all time favorite book boyfriend list!

3.THE WICKED LOVELY SERIES by Melissa Marr. My all time favorite Fae series and my favorite out of all of Marr's books.

4. THE VAMPIRE ACADEMY series by Richelle Mead. I love all of Richelle's books I'd love to re-read these one day soon.

5. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES by L.J. Smith. Only the first 4 all the others are crap. I read these in the 90's and they're still on my re-read list to this day!

6. THE SWEEP SERIES by Cate Tiernan. This is my favorite YA witch series of all time if you haven't read it I highly suggest doing so :)

7. A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU by Claudia Gray. Yeah I know this book just came out today but I read it months ago and I would love to re-read it like a million times!

8. THE FIRE AND THORNS series be Rae Carson. My heart misses Hector soooo badly I really think I may re-read this one soon!

9. THE DARKYN SERIES by Lynn Viehl. The second adult series on my list. I absolutely loved this one even more than The Black Dagger Brotherhood. Lynn's vampires are just so sexy!!!

10. THE HOST by Stephanie Meyer. I really did love this book even if it was a slow read at first. I'm hoping Stephanie gets off her rear and finishes the series someday.

So this is my list. What about you? What would you re-read if you had the time?

And come back next week for Top Ten Characters You Wish Would Get Their OWN Book (minor or just maybe a semi main character you wish a book was from their POV)

Hugs,
Jaime

Jaime's Review of Carnival Of Souls By Melissa Marr

Carnival of Souls
Melissa Marr
Release Date: September 4, 2012
Hardcover: 320 pages
Publisher: Harper Teen
ISBN: 0061659282
Source: ARC from the publisher
Rating: Loved
From Goodreads.

In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures--if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live. All Mallory knows of The City is that her father--and every other witch there--fled it for a life in exile in the human world. Instead of a typical teenage life full of friends and maybe even a little romance, Mallory scans quiet streets for threats, hides herself away, and trains to be lethal. She knows it's only a matter of time until a daimon finds her and her father, so she readies herself for the inevitable. While Mallory possesses little knowledge of The City, every inhabitant of The City knows of her. There are plans for Mallory, and soon she, too, will be drawn into the decadence and danger that is the Carnival of Souls. From Melissa Marr, bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series and "Graveminder," comes a brand-new tale of lush secrets, dark love, and the struggle to forge one's own destiny.

Y’all I love Melissa Marr!!! So no surprise I had to get my hands on this book! And that I did thanks to Harper Teen! What I love about Melissa’s books is the grittiness in them. If you’ve read her Wicked Lovely books you know what I mean. She doesn’t pull punches and she writes what some YA authors wouldn’t even think of.

Carnival of Souls is no exception. Heck I think it’s even grittier in some aspects than her WL series.

Carnival is set in two worlds the human world and in the city of Daimons and both parts were equally magical and dangerous. I loved the descriptions of The City! It was dark and alluring but also dirty and evil. I mean people sold themselves for all different kinds of pleasures just to survive, to eat, to put a roof over their heads! They also fight to survive or better themselves (gain in caste level). I fell for both of the daimons Belial and Kaleb they were so different but both equally awesome! They were not nice dudes just a FYI so if you’re looking for a nice guy it’s not them. They’ve both done awful things but they both had reasons. I also loved both Aya and Mallory. I do think I liked Aya a bit more. She was a big secret waiting to be unwrapped and I couldn’t wait to read more of her parts to see what was happening. And the ending OMG Melissa knows how to write an ending!!!! She has me dying to read the next book!

I chose this passage to share with you that was funny but also shows the differences between the daimons in
The City.

Anger vied with worry in Zevi’s expression. Muttering to himself, he went over and stoked the fire, and then returned with one of the blankets from his bed. He sniffed Kaleb again as he spread the blanket over him.
“Someone was against your skin, but you didn’t have sex.”

“I didn’t”

“Were you rejected?” Zevi’s gaze narrowed and he ran over to Aya.

Before Kaleb could speak, Zevi had bent down and pressed his nose to her crotch.

“No!” Kaleb yelled. His exclamation was simultaneous with Zevi’s yip of pain and the sound of crashing.

“I’m not up on cur customs, but I’m pretty sure that putting your nose there is not something you do with outsiders.” Aya had her foot on Zevi’s chest. “Don’t do that again.”

Also make sure to check out Melissa taking about Carnival of Souls

And there will be a trailer that was filmed in the Netherlands with professional fight choreographers so keep an eye out for that August 14th! Here's a couple pictures from it to tide you over.

Hug an Author Blog hop

Hey everyone! Our good friend Marissa over at Many to Read Before I Sleep asked us to join in on the Hug an Author Blog Hop and we couldn’t say no but, we also had a hard time narrowing it down to one or two authors. So we picked a few questions and answered you will notice a trend as the authors we wanted to showcase and Hug the most are Jeri Smith-Ready, Melissa Marr, Julie Kagawa, and Maria V. Snyder! So onto the questions and our answers! Oh and keep reading there's a giveaway at the bottom ;)

Who was your favorite author when you were a child? A teen? During your 20s? As an adult?

Jaime-I didn’t read much when I was a kid but when I did it was Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and C.S. Lewis. As a teen my tastes were pretty eclectic I was one of those kids who actually enjoyed reading Shakespeare in class and I hated Harper Lee but mostly I read anything and everything Anne Rice and L.J. Smith. I didn’t read at all in my 20’s I was too busy partying and staying out late I know I’m sooo bad. Now I guess you can call me an adult at 35? ;) I have too many to name but there are three that I read everything they write Jeri Smith-Ready, Melissa Marr, and Maria V. Snyder.

Patricia- I had many favorite authors as a kid such as EB. White (Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little), Robert C. O'Brien (Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM) and Judy Blume (Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing) to name just a few.

As a teen I also loved to read but I seemed to have gotten stuck in rut. I was too eclectic to name any single author. In my early twenties I had very young kids and sadly didn't have as much time to read as I would've liked but one author that there for most of my 20's was JK Rowling and of course her iconic series Harry Potter.

As an adult I feel like I have a much better grasp of what authors I enjoy. Of course I am just loving YA (mainly paranormal/urban fantasy) but I also love a good legal drama such as books by John Grisham. Back to YA, there are so many that I just adore: Jeri Smith-Ready, Julie Kagawa, Melissa Marr, Rachel Vincent, Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare and JK Rowling just to name a few.

Which author wrote the character you would want as your best friend?

Jaime- Julie Kagawa! I want Puck as my best friend!

Patricia- Hmm...this is a tough one. There are so many great characters out there but right now I am going to have to go with Rose Hathaway from Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series. I am reading this series right now and it is AWESOME!! Not only am I totally loving this series but Jaime and I will be defending Rose in the YA Heroine Tourney hosted by the YA Sisterhood Blog.

Is there an author you've met or attended their signing? Who would you give your right arm to see?

Jaime- I’ve met a lot of authors being in Northern California and close to San Francisco we have some cool signings. I’ve also been to the Romantic Times Convention and I plan on going in 2012 too. So just to name a few I’ve met Cassie Clare, Richelle Mead, Melissa Marr, Jeri Smith-Ready, Rachel Vincent, Adrian Phoenix, and Rachel Hawkins.

Patricia- I have been fortunate enough to attend a few signings now and they have all been fantastic! I have met Cassandra Clare, Holly Black, Melissa Marr, Michelle Hodkin, Becca Fitzpatrick, Sarwat Chadda and Rachel Hawkins. They have all been out of this world amazing.

I would give my right arm to meet J.K. Rowling. I would love to pick the brain of one of the most influential and amazing authors this world has ever seen.

Is there an author who brought you back/to reading?

Jaime- Honestly? Stephenie Meyer if it hadn’t been for Twilight I probably wouldn’t have started reading again. And now I know there’s soo many better books and writers out there ;)

Patricia- Not really, I've always been a reader. There's been times in my life that I've been more devoted to it than others but I've always read even if it was just ten minutes before bed. However, since I'm currently reading YA I think that I would say that Cassandra Clare had a big part in me leaning towards that genre. I picked up City of Bones at my local library and loved it so much I went back to look for more books like it, sadly book two was not out yet but I found tons of great finds and I continue to do so. Jaime has also been very instrumental in pointing out reads that I didn't even know existed.

Who is the author that created a world so vivid you were actually lost after it was over? i.e. Book hangover from hell.

Jaime- Suzanne Collins and not because I wanted to live there but after reading Mockingjay I literally did not pick up another book for a week. That series messed with my mind!

Patricia- Again, I have to point out Harry Potter but also Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series! If you haven't read The Iron Fey series...run, don't walk to your nearest bookstore or library and pick it up.

The one author that's mere presence would bring you tears of joy?

Jaime- That author is sadly dead but I would have loved to meet Jane Austen she was such a visionary in her time. Another one would have to be Ursula K Le Guin she is a pioneer in the Sci-Fi genre that has been mostly populated with men.

Patricia- Seriously...I am going to have to start sounding like a broken record but JK Rowling is at the top of that list for me. But I think I would also have tears of joy and lots of embarrassing fan girling if I was ever in the presence of the awesome-tastic Jeri Smith-Ready. I've "met" her on twitter and she is one of the most gracious, nicest and sweetest people ever.

What is your best memory of an author signing (meeting)?

Jaime- Best memory? That’s easy meeting Jeri Smith-Ready! I had read her books and we had formed a friendship on Facebook and twitter I even sent her a postcard from Forks when I was on vacation which she tells me she uses as a bookmark. Well I got to meet her at last year’s Romantic Times Convention in LA and she was just as awesome in person we actually got to hang out for a good amount of time at the Teen party she is just the sweetest J Also I got to meet Adrian Phoenix there who I have also become friends with we even had dinner together.

Patricia- I think that my best memory was the first signing I ever attended. I'd never been and Jaime asked me if I wanted to go. I honestly didn't know what to expect and I was feeling a bit nervous the whole time. But as soon as the authors started to speak I was enthralled. They were super funny, sweet and totally approachable. Who did I meet you ask? Well, it was Rachel Hawkins (Hex Hall) and Sarwat Chadda (Billie San Greal)! I would love to go to another signing with either one or both of them.

So what did you all think? Were some of your favorite authors mentioned here? We’d love to know which authors you’d like to hug. Comment and let us know! We’ll give away some swag packs to 5 lucky people with signed bookmarks from Jeri Smith-Ready and other authors we love! Make sure to leave us your e-mail address!!!

Jaime's Trip to The Smart Chicks Kick It Tour and The Northwest Book Festival

This weekend I got to fly up to Seattle, WA (Kirkland actually) for The Northwest Book Festival who hosted The Smart Chicks Kick it Tour. It was a beautiful cool overcast Washington weekend which was awesome because it has been pretty warm here in Nor-Cal. Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy Reads, her friend Tiffany, and my mom who is a huge Jeri Smith-Ready fan flew up from Sacramento as well.

The festival is pretty small and it seemed to be mostly indie and self published authors but I did get to meet one of my favorite indie’s Cyndi Tefft who wrote the amazing book Between if you’d like to know more check out my review HERE. Cyndi signed my very own copy of Between, I sat in on a panel she was on, and we had an awesome time! Then my Saturday wound down so mom and I went to see Moneyball which was AWESOME I’m an Oakland A’s fan so I knew it would be but even if you’re not I suggest seeing that movie Brad Pitt was perfect as Billy Beane!!!

Sunday rolled around and the sun was shining it was a perfect day for the big event! We had breakfast at The Original Pancake House which if you’re ever in Kirkland and want some great grub eat there the food was fantastic! Then we headed over to the Teen Union Building where the Smart Chicks event was to be held; we met up with Kristina from kristina-worldofbooks who is a WA native and fellow blogger that I was really excited to meet! I also got to hang out with Tera Lynn Childs who wasn’t on the panels but drove over to visit. The Smart Chicks arrived shortly after us and my mom went kinda photo happy so most of the pics in the slide show are hers ;) The authors that attended this year were Melissa Marr, Melissa de la Cruz, Kelley Armstrong, Jeri Smith-Ready, Rachel Vincent, Rachel Caine, Richelle Mead, Sophie Jordan, Margaret Stohl, Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Nina Kirkiri Hoffman, Sara Zarr, and Stephanie Kuehnert. There were so many of them they actually split up into two panels so we had about an hour and a half with each group to ask questions and hear funny stories. Then the signing started and I thought last year’s Smart Chicks event was crazy but this one topped it. I didn’t even get all my books signed I would have missed my plane but, Mindy and Kristina were more than happy to help out and get the rest of my books signed and will send them to me! Thanks ladies BIG HUGS!!!!! Oh one more thing before the slide show. Last year I went to the Smart Chicks event in Menlo Park, CA and this was before we had the blog. I can honestly say after that event one year ago was when I started to really want to start a blog and a big reason why I did so thank you Smart Chicks you have a loyal follower and friend here and I will always make your events!! Much love –Jaime

Ok and now the slide show I hope you enjoy!!!!!!

Mom took some video with her new camera so I thought I’d share one of those clips My #TeamKilt girls will like this clip since it's Jeri talking ;) ;)

Thanks for letting me share my weekend with you I’ll have more fun event stuff to post after October 9th when Patricia and I go to the Becca Fitzpatrizk and Michelle Hodkin signing and then in April when I (and hopefully Patricia) go to the Romantic Times Book Lovers Convention in Chicago!

Jaime's review of Darkest Mercy by Melissa Marr

The Summer King is missing; the Dark Court is bleeding; and a stranger walks the streets of Huntsdale, his presence signifying the deaths of powerful fey.
Aislinn tends to the Summer Court, searching for her absent king and yearning for Seth. Torn between his new queen and his old love, Keenan works from afar to strengthen his court against the coming war. Donia longs for fiery passion even as she coolly readies the Winter Court for battle.
And Seth, sworn brother of the Dark King and heir to the High Queen, is about to make a mistake that could cost his life.
Love, despair, and betrayal ignite the Faery Courts, and in the final conflict, some will win . . . and some will lose everything.
The thrilling conclusion to Melissa Marr's New York Times bestselling Wicked Lovely series will leave readers breathless. Excerpt from Goodreads.

Jaime's review....

Words cannot explain how I feel about this book but I will try.
Darkest Mercy the final book in the Wicked Lovely series is amazing! It completely wraps up each of our beloved characters story lines. Throughout this book you’ll laugh, cry, scream out of frustration, want to poke something with a hot fire poker, and then cry some more.
Melissa’s world of Huntsdale is a place where I want to live. I would be in the Winter Court of course because of my love for Donia but, I do really enjoy the other courts especially the Dark Court.
So in this story Bannanach (War) who by the way is completely evil; attempts to split the courts apart and start a war; what she doesn’t realize is the relationships these other characters have forged. Winter, Dark, and Summer along with a few solitaries band together to take War down and kill her and stop her followers from destroying all Fey. We do see a small bit of Fairy but as their story was pretty much wrapped up in Radiant Shadows, this one take place almost solely in Huntsdale. For those of you who have read all of these books and formed attachments to the characters in this book be warned no one come out unscathed Melissa has no problem torturing or killing people in her books. There were some moments in the book where I was like “how can you do this?” but then I realized the reasons for it. There was one couple that throughout the series I had a feeling would end up together others I was not too sure of. Even though some of couples surprised me I was completely happy with who ended up together and how. I don’t want to post spoilers so no there will not be hints.
Melissa has created a Wickedly Lovely set of stories and with the finale of Darkest Mercy you will not be disappointed. So go buy Darkest Mercy in bookstores February 22nd. Huge thanks to Melissa Marr for letting me enter a wonderful contest and win this ARC.
Darkest Mercy by Melissa Marr 5 out of 5 stars.

Jaime's review of Old Habits by Melissa Marr

Melissa Marr returns to the ravishing world of Faerie with a story set between her bestselling novels Ink Exchange and Fragile Eternity.
Recently anointed king of the Dark Court, Niall struggles to forge a new relationship with his subjects—and with the former Dark King, Irial, his once-friend, once-enemy, and now possible-advisor. Excerpt from Goodreads.

Jaime's review.....

So I actually read this five days ago and posted my review on Goodreads, but there's been some down time on the blog I wanted to share this with al of you :)

This lovely little read arrived on my kindle last night at midnight and since I'm such a big fan of Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series I just had to read it then and there. I finished at 2 a.m. :)
Old Habits is another wonderful novella taking place after Ink Exchange and let me say includes my 3 favorite men of the series Seth, Irial, and Niall. Where Stopping Time focused on Niall and Iri's love for Leslie. Old Habits centers on Niall and Iri's love for each other and Niall accepting his role as the new Dark King. I love how Melissa explores the depths of these characters and what they will sacrifice for each other. There's more violence in this one I love the battle scene with Develin. There's also a steamy scene for Iri I won't say with who since my reviews are spoiler free. I can't wait for Darkest Mercy and let me say I'm Team Dark Court all the way!
So if you're a fan of The Wicked Lovely series Old Habits is a must read.

Jaimes review of Old Habits- 5 out of 5 stars.
