Our latest Challenge Winner

In fact our first ever challenge winner at A Vintage Journey.

The second Friday in our fortnightly calendar is when we announce the Creative Guides’ chosen winner of the previous challenge and today it is with great pleasure to announce that this is …..

Nicola

This entry had us all feeling well prepared for the journey with these amazing suitcases in which to pack our goodies.
Strapped and tagged we are ready to go.
What an inspirational idea let alone a fantastic project. These are the epitome of a stack of old cases you can see on the station of any train museum and have been cleverly altered both inside and out. If you haven’t had the chance to see Nicola’s post then I do urge you to go and check it out as there are loads more photos and a great process step by step for you to read.

Thanks Nicola for creating and sharing these wonderful cases with us for our first challenge and congratulations on being the first Traveller to gain the Winner’s badge. You will soon receive notification of your prize which is a £10 voucher to spend in-store at Country View Crafts.

Thank you also to everyone else who joined us on this first stage of our Vintage Journey, we so loved looking through all your amazing projects and I have to say you made it so very difficult for us to whittle down all of them to just one, but we got there in the end.

Don’t forget we are already half way through the second challenge where the lovely Alison is challenging you all to use words in your projects, but please read the Travelling Instructions as we found several people had eliminated themselves from the chance to win the prize as they hadn’t read the instructions and followed them. We will check they have been followed to ensure fairness to all those who have read them and do comply.

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to catching up with you again on Monday.

hugs Brenda and the AVJ team

Creative Guide Guest for challenge #1

Today we have our very first guest to ‘A Vintage Journey’ and we are so pleased to welcome someone who not only loves the vintage style but also all things Tim. I am very pleased and proud to introduce -

photo (113)

From a very early age I have always been creative, "growing up with  little money I was always looking to create something out of nothing" I can remember spending a lot of time with my grandma who taught me how to sew on her old singer sewing machine.....this was where my love of all things vintage started! (I still use the very same  sewing machine today in my work) I am a self confessed hoarder of things, stuff, junk... I have a passion for all things vintage and love to incorporate my vintage finds with my love of distress products into my work.

I am incredibly proud to be a Certified Ranger Educator and have created projects for Ranger ink, Tim Holtz and Dyan Reaveley. My work has been published in Somerset Gallery, Craft stamper and most recently I contributed projects for Tim's new book The Compendium of Curiosities 3.  I design and create from my" Little Shabby Shed" which is my special creative place in my garden.

Kaz’s project today depicts her very vintage style and has introduced a pop of colour too.

I am sure you will agree that this is a fabulous project, rich in vintage style and images and beautifully designed. All of us at A Vintage Journey would like to congratulate Kaz on having some of her work published in the new Compendium of Curiosities III by Tim Holtz, what a huge achievement and one she is very proud of.

To find out more details about Kaz’s project please pop over to her blog and visit her at her little shabby shed.

Thanks Kaz I hope you will join us again sometime to share your wonderful vintage talent.

There are still five more days for you to enter our first challenge ‘Anything Tim’.
I would really recommend you read the Travelling Instructions so that you do not make your entry non-compliant and please turn off comment moderation if you would like a comment left on your project.

Have a great week everyone.

Tag Friday

Hi Everyone
Wow we have been bowled over by your amazing response to the challenge and to our projects, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your wonderful comments, we are so enjoying reading them.
Once the normal calendar kicks in, the second Friday of the challenge will be the day to announce the winner of the previous challenge and to see a project from an earlier winner as a guest Creative Traveller. But we aren't quite into the cycle yet so what better than to share some Tim tags with you to help keep you inspired and ready to hop aboard and join in the challenge.

'Spread your wings and travel' is the theme of my tag using Tim's distressed crackle, faux patina and dimensional collage fragment techniques.  You can find a step x step on my own blog.
Playtime with new stamps and stencils for me... I love all the messy mixed media stuff, textures and techniques - and I sometimes forget the pure joy of just inking and stamping.  That's pretty much what this tag is (with a touch of acetate).  You can see more details over at Words and Pictures.
Something completely different for me - not a flower in sight!  As soon as my Time Traveller stamps arrived I just had to make a something with them along with two new Distress Inks Salty Ocean and Gathered Twigs - I think this will be a favourite colour combination.  There are more details on my blog Live The Dream.
My take on Tim's March tag, all the techniques can of course be seen on Tim's Blog, but to see more detailed photos and how I gave it my own twist just go to Astrid's Artistic Efforts
I thought I would give one of my older stamps sets an airing along with my latest embossing folder, I think they suit each other very well.  You can find further details over HERE.

Still having some travel fun with the ink well and feather movers and shapers stencil I created. For all the inky details, you can visit me right HERE.

I have masked and stamped over the whole tag to create the background and then added a few embellishments. The stamps are mostly from the Purely Random set. I love the film strip and can you see there is a couple added to the cash key?

Its so nice to be here with you all again and I hope you are enjoying Brenda's challenge 'Anything Tim'. Totally awesome entries here and I love to see the various vintage, shabby, retro styles all inspired by Tim, which is what its all about.
The background of this tag is the Eroded Metallic Technique by Tim Holtz, plus stencilling, texture paste, Distress Inks and Idea-ology pieces. Pop over HERE for more details xx

Anyone who follows me regularly will know I always take part in Tim's tag challenges, but as a committed card maker my versions are always translated to fit card blanks. These are a mix of Tim's March tag techniques and inspiration from the Sochi Winter 2014 Olympics. Find out what on earth I'm going on about over at Pushing The Right Buttons.

Well I love tags and for this I wanted to make a tag  to capture the enjoyment of my creative and family journey. I believe it is so exciting not only to enjoy the journey, travel and discover but also to find  time to treasure those memories and be true to your heart. All the details of how I made this can be found at inkypinkycraft. I certainly did lots of creative playtime on this tag x

This Tag Friday was the perfect opportunity for me to play with some of my brand new stamps and Tim's Smudge Technique he used on his March Tag. Archival and Distress Inks, gorgeous vintage images from Tim's new Mercantile, Typography and Nature Walk stamp sets combined with some of my old favorites; Papillon and Classics #1 work so beautifully together. Add a little distress tape, a Pediment, some Ideaology and a spritzed, Latticework stenciled background and wha-lah! Check out how I made these at Creativity is Contagious.

Thank you to all the Creative Guides who have joined me at this pit stop, hopefully this has provided you with some refreshment and an opportunity to re-fuel.

Whilst you are here I would like to remind you that there is a DT call out for a 12th Creative Traveller to join us. We have a very flexible approach to joining in the challenges but do email me, brenda@ourvintagejourney.com for more details.

Also we have some exciting Pinterest boards that we are starting, we would love it if you travelled over to take a look and hopefully consider following our journey there too.

So have a wonderful weekend and remember you have one week left to join in the inaugural challenge, it closes at 6.00 pm (UK time) Thursday 20th March.

Take care, hugs Brenda xx

Shabby candle stand – The tale of an up-cycled pizza box

The first Monday following the launch of our challenge will continue to be a stop at 'Destination Inspiration' and I’m honoured to take the first ticket!

Like many others, I adore scented candles, they make fabulous gifts, especially when you make a presentation stand to give with them!

candlebox27d

Here is the timetable to my destination...

I started by measuring the candle jar and determining the size tray I would need and then set about drawing a box template onto one side of the pizza box:

Next came a layer of stamping of a floral spray with black archival ink followed by some resist stamping of a small bird. Both stamps are from the CMS069 - Artful flight collection:
candletrio02_rs

All four sides of the top and bottom of the template were treated with simple blending of Scattered straw, Spiced marmalade and Walnut stain Distress stains then misted with water to blend. Once dry, the box was formed and glued:

The tray needs to take the weight of a glass candle jar so I cut a base a few millimetres smaller than the box, covered it with using the butterfly paper from Tim's Kraft resist 12 x 12 stack and then used the DIs & mister again to treat it:

The base was glued inside the box before adding Idea-Ology Box feet. A little lace was added too:

So far:

Out came matching Distress stains, Tattered florals die, book pages, kraft card etc and, using the wrinkle free distress technique, the flowers started to take shape:

I cut Tattered leaves from mount board and used the same technique to colour them. Each of the flowers was edged with the Walnut stain DI then Diamond Stickles added accents to the flowers before finally adding various buttons, pearls, studs and ironware to their centres:

So far:

Now the thing about a candle stand is that it really doesn't matter how it's decorated on the otside when it's lit because you only see the inside! Strong, instant drying glue was used to add the flowers and leaves (vertically) inside the box:

So far:

Add the candle:

And when it gets to twilight - light it!

This candle stand and candle is going to a friend for her birthday - I hope she enjoys it as much as I enjoyed making it!

That's it for my journey today, I hope you all have a terrific week!
