"Jack Valentine"...and a Few Valentine's Treats!

Punch-out Valentines were my favorite!

I loved Valentine's Day as a child.  In school we would spend a day decorating old shoe boxes with construction paper hearts and stickers.  We struggled cutting out hearts with those blunt scissors and usually got more paste in our hair than on our boxes.  There were usually a few kids who enjoyed the sweet minty taste of the school paste...myself included!  In my mind my finished box was a work of art...but probably looked something like this...

I liked to wander around the room admiring...critiquing...all the other boxes.  I imagined that there would be a special card left in my box by a secret admirer.

Typical Grade School Party.
The 60's were my era.

The party above was probably a lot more fun than the ones I remember.  The last hour of school was set aside for us to line up and "deliver the mail."  We all seemed to get an equal amount of cards and teacher made sure no one was left out.  I worried about that...there were usually a few quiet and shy children in the class.  I wasn't quiet, but I was a bit shy.  We usually got a heart-shaped cookie that someone's mom had made, then we gathered up our boxes and went home.  It was fun to sit on the floor and open the cards.  Some had a few conversation hearts sealed inside the envelope, but I don't remember a lot of candy in the stores, except for the heart-shaped boxes of chocolates.  I eagerly read each card with Mickey Mouse, Fred Flintstone and others seeking a secret message from my admirer, but "I Choo-Choo-Choose You" wasn't exactly a confession of undying love!

Jack Valentine...
Who is Jack?

Until this morning I had never heard of a character called "Jack Valentine."  I was online looking for Valentine's trivia as a possible blog topic, when I came across several mentions of Jack. Jack is a folk character from Norfolk in eastern England.  He is sometimes known as Old Father Valentine. In Victorian times in Norfolk, Valentine's Eve was almost as important to children (and hopeful lovers) as Christmas with anonymous gifts from secret admirers or parents.

Dressed in a top hat and tails, Jack Valentine would knock upon the door and leave presents for the expectant child.  Sometimes Jack would play tricks upon the children and tie string to the gift, so when the child reached for it, he would jerk it away.  After the children were thoroughly frustrated, Jack would let go of the string and let them have the gift.  But they must never look for him.  Some children found the idea of Jack a bit frightening.

This story of Jack brought back a few Valentine's memories from my own childhood.  As much as I enjoyed the school party...it was the evening that I liked most.  When I got home from school, my mom would be putting sugar cookies on paper plates for our friends. In my old neighborhood in American Fork, it was popular to leave cards or cookies on a neighbor's porch, ring the doorbell and run.  This was also when we gave cards to children that were not in our classes.  Some tricksters would tie a string to a card and jerk it away when you tried to pick it up.  Does this sound familiar?  I had never heard of Jack Valentine...yet it seems his spirit crossed the ocean with the British pioneers who settled my home town.  What do you know?  I learn something new every day!

My Funny (Random) Valentines....

Snowmen for Valentine's.
Bethany Lowe tall snowman hat was changed with glittery red hearts.

I had so many creative intentions for Valentine's this year.  But some time in January the road got a little bumpy.  First, my father fell and broke his hip, which required surgery.  On the same day his wife, Geri, suffered a stroke that in a few weeks would take her away.  It was hard for my dad to be in a rehab center in one Chicago suburb while his wife was in ICU in another.  I am so thankful that Geri's family was on hand to help him.  When Geri passed away on the 26th, we made our plans to fly to Chicago for the funeral and to support Dad.  There are a lot of plans still to be made.  Dad will be in the center for a couple of months until he can get around, then he will be coming home to stay with us.  I'll be glad to get him here...Chicago is a whole world away from here.

In the meantime...here are the few Valentine's I was able to make this year...

Snow White Mini Fairy Garden

Alice and Bambi Mini Fairy Gardens.
I discovered that I could get miniature trees and such at Hobby Lobby in the train miniatures aisle.  Alice's tree has red "roses" added. The Queen likes them red.

Sweet Valentines Swap!

Special Delivery...Valentines Swap!

I just love holiday swaps...it's so much fun to create something special for a new blogging friend.  Let's face it...if I didn't do swaps I would probably flunk out of Holiday Crafting University.  Swaps stimulate our creativity...without them I would be standing around in my craft room with a stupid expression on my face, unable to focus.  I need an assignment...and a deadline!  I joined a Valentine swap hosted by Viv of Viv Out on a Whim.   She matched up swap partners and I was so fortunate to get Cindy of  Prairie's Edge Farm.  She makes the most beautiful Shabby/Elegant things.  The soft colors are like the sweetest of treats...the icing on a wedding cake or a rose patterned plate of petit fours.

I don't think I've ever seen a more beautifully decorated tin.

These are the colors my romantic side craves.

Tiny embellished box was filled with lovely trimmings.

Anyone who knows me, knows I adore small boxes.

A tag this beautiful deserves heirloom status.

A bookmark worthy of resting between the pages of a Jane Austen novel.

A few of the lovely embellishments she included.
The tin was filled with fun items for crafting.

More vintage Valentines.

Two wonderful cards.
I am still learning the art of card making.

I posted many of things that I sent Cindy a couple of weeks ago.  She received the whole Snow White treatment.  So I will let her post about her package if she so desires.  Thank you so much, Cindy for the beautiful treasures you made for me.  And thank you, Viv, for hosting this fun swap!

Is your Sweetheart a "long little doggy?"
I found a few Doxie Valentines in my file...enjoy!

I "Heart" Snow White...Valentines Crafting!

I "Heart" Snow White!

When blogging pal, Tammy, found this Snow White magazine cover for me on Pinterest I knew at that moment what my theme for Valentines crafting would be.  The first thing I did was print a larger version of this darling graphic on printable fabric and applique it to a white tee-shirt shirt to wear on my Valentines trip to Disneyland.  I will wear it with a red sweater or hoodie and everyone will stop me to ask which shop I found it in.  Lol...I just love messing with other Disney tourists.  If I am feeling especially obnoxious whimsical I will tell them I got it in a little shop in Fantasyland.

Snow White's Valentine Party...

Garden Party in a Chocolate Tin...

It took some searching on Pinterest, but I was able to find Snow White and all seven of the the Dwarves Valentines from 1938.  I just love the soft colors and Snow White's sweet expression. The tin was an oval about 10 inches long.  The cottage backdrop was from a Snow White playset I bought at Disneyland last fall.  I will be using the playset figures in another project.

The Dwarves are so cute and quirky!

Snow White's bluebird sings on top of the flag pole.

Tiny Tea Cup Ornaments....

Tiny Tin Tea Cups Fairy Garden Ornaments.

I have been wanting to make some of these tin cup ornaments since I saw them on Pinterest.  They are inspired by "Dime Store Chic."  I was unable to find any of the cute little tin cups until a few weeks ago when one of my favorite bloggers, Meri of ImagiMeri's offered some for sale on Facebook.  I hope she likes what I did with them.  So far I have only made these two, but my daughter Sascha...who loves Alice in Wonderland...thought they would be cute using Alice figures for cake toppers.  I'm hoping there will be an Alice-themed wedding in the next couple of years.

The wee cups are only 2" across.
I want to attach them to ornament clips when I find some.

Snow White cake topper came with seven gnome-like dwarves.
The dwarves have little tools and wheel barrows.

A Fun Christmas Surprise!

Water Tower in Stanley's Oasis...Cars Land!

I just love Cars Land in Disney California Adventure.  They built the whole town of Radiator Springs...which amazes me.  You could spend a week there and never see all the detail built into that attraction.  The line for Radiator Springs Racers takes you into Stanley's Oasis which has a Route 66 vibe with its old garages and a building made out of vintage oil bottles.  Entering the Oasis, you pass by the cutest old water tank...the 8 and 3/4s Wonder of the World.  I just love everything about it.   This Christmas, my DIY DIL, Lori, surprised me with my very own Stanley's Oasis water tank.  I can't believe she made this for me!

Isn't it the cutest thing ever?

Spoolie Swaps...The Threads That Tie Us Together!

What to do with an empty spool?

The Threads That Tie Us Together...
I really miss the days when sewing thread came on wooden spools.  There is something about the warmth and texture of wood that gladdens my heart.  I just don't feel that love for the lowly plastic things we have now.  My Grandma Patta kept every empty spool for as long as I could remember.  She was a doll collector...I can't recall a time when she wasn't making dolls or dressing them in fancy gowns.  She even sewed doll clothes to order at Christmas time...Barbie, Chatty Cathy, Patty Play Pal,  Madame Alexander...she made wonderful outfits for them all.  Even G.I. Joe!  I often tagged along with her and Grandpa Rich to thrift stores and yard sales looking for trims and pieces of fancy fabrics for her creations.  Don't we all do that now?  The thought makes me smile!

Grandma Patta and Grandpa Rich...50th Anniversary

My Grandparents were the perfect team.  Grandma dressed the dolls and Grandpa made the doll furniture.  That's where the empty spools came in.  Grandpa made wonderful Barbie-size furniture...pink wardrobes with sliding doors, perfect little upholstered chairs and sofas and the cutest beds you've ever seen.  The spools were stacked to make four-poster beds with wooden beads for finials.  Grandma made the pillows and mattresses...with a quilt and pillow cases of course!  No wonder I believed they worked for Santa. My Christmas Secret.

Years later I found a 3 ft. tall cardboard barrel in their attic...it was full of wooden spools!  Grandpa Rich was still alive then and he graciously let me take it home.  I have enjoyed many years of crafting with those spools.  But until recently I had never heard of a "Spoolie" or "Spoolie Swap."  I am still learning the art of making a unique decoration incorporating a wooden spool...but OMGoodness it has sure been fun!

Valentine Spoolie Swap!

Wooden spools are some of the threads that tie me to my Grandparents...so it makes perfect sense that making and exchanging items created from spools can tie us together as friends.  Valentines Day is the perfect time to show our friends how much they mean to us...and swaps are a way to meet new friends and get to know our current ones better.  I was so happy when Sue of It's a Very Cherry World decide to host a Valentine Spoolie Swap.   My partner was Mariah of designsby2 and it's been a pleasure to get to know her and visit her blog.
