Raven

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. EP was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of colorful photos!
Ravens are super smart birds and are truly impressive looking! In my younger days, I had a pet crow named Crawford. Crows and ravens are very similar.

I really wanted to paint this over a ground of black gesso. It really worked out well on some ravens I painted a few years ago. But today I didn't have time to apply gesso and have it dry completely. So I did it against a ground of thinned red acrylic....just didn't have the same feel.

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking and commenting!

Luke 12:24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

Smooth Talker-Scarlet Macaw

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Marilou was the gracious host this week and provided a bunch of great photos! Thank you, Marilou!

The Scarlet Macaw...I really like these birds because of the attitudes they display. Looks as if this one is about to tell a joke....hope it's clean...maybe you should cover your ears!
Once again some painting knife was used in this one. Plenty of texture.

Oil on a 7x5 canvas panel.

C&C welcome. Thank you for taking the time to look and leave a comment! Always appreciated!

Patient Fisherman-Egret

 Close ups

Acrylic on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Donna did the the honors of hosting this week and provided a bunch of super photos!

I had to try this egret. They are such patient fishermen (as noted in the title).

This is acrylic on a 7x5 Gesso Art Board. It has a very slick non absorbent surface. I wanted to use some wet and wild techniques I had been mulling over. But much of my plans fell through. I like a few parts, though. All part of the learning process.

C&C welcome. Thank you for commenting!

Statue Admirer-Pigeon

 Close ups

Standard acrylic on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Oty was the gracious hostess.

Although these birds are scorned as a pest, I can't help but to admire the feather markings and shiny iridescent heads of pigeons. They are really a beautiful bird.

This is standard acrylic on 7x5 canvas panel. Basically the same process as the previous two weeks. Many layers of thinned acrylic over textured gesso.
I added a touch of black pen and colored pencil just to "kick up" a few spots.

C&C welcome. Thanks for commenting!

Mountain Bluebird

 Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Color of Blue Challenge at DPW presented by  the super talented Qiang Huang. He instructed; Do a painting with a blue object as the center of focus. High key (light value dominant) is preferred. Please try not to use red and oranges to contrast, but still make the blue color look clean, and pop.

This was an interesting challenge...Thank you Qiaing!
Never realized how much ya really miss the complements until ya can't use them. Something like missing the water when the well runs dry.
Hope I didn't bend the rules by that background looking sorta orange-y .  It's made up of yellow ochre plus a touch of purple to gray it. It's a camera thing.

Sweet Nothin's-Macaws

Close ups
Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Li was the gracious hostess.

The macaws looked like they were posing for a Valentine card. It looks like one is whispering sweet nothin's into the other one's ear. The panel was first toned with red acrylic. Thanks for looking and commenting!

Woodland Watch-Blue Jay

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Birdbrain Challenge at DPW posted by that really fine artist, Carol Marine.
Carol said: Your challenge this week is to paint any bird of your choosing.
Those directions were simple enough...even for a birdbrain like me.

I really like the brash blue jay! He sounds off at the slightest disturbance which warns all the critters within earshot to be on the lookout. Many folks hate his noisy behavior and the threat he sometimes poses to other birds. But I love the color and the bluejay is only doing what God designed it to do.

Good For The Goose- Gander

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Mary was the hostess who graciously supplied the great reference photos!

I imagined this proud guy to be a gander so the title will make sense.

Some palette knife...some brush.
I tried to go by that saying, " a stroke laid is a stroke stayed." Which means after you lay a stroke down, don't spread it or fuss with it...period. Go ahead and make another stroke. I wasn't entirely successful at it but I tried.

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to at DPW posted by Eileen McCoy.
Eileen wrote: "Paint using the primary colors: red, yellow and blue as the 3 main areas of your composition."
I painted this Scarlet Macaw with a brush and painting knife. I like the rich, impasto, surface.

Mr Macaw-Parrot

Close ups

Oil on 6X6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Joel was the great host who supplied a lot of great reference photos!

The colorful macaw called out to be painted! And he's quite a talker!

In some spots I lay the paint on thick with a palette knife then manipulated with a brush.

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

Shady Characters #2-Flamingos

Close up
Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Seeing Double Challenge at DPW posted by the extraordinary artist, Kimberly Santini .
She instructed: Using the same reference, create two paintings, each unique in scale (for example, a 5x7 and an 8x10). The paintings you create should be different compositionally - take advantage of cropping/modifying the scale/shift in focal point and build two separate pieces.

This 6x6 painting was made from the same reference that was used for Friday's post of the 5x7 flamingos. I think this one really accentuates the abstract qualities.
I have used this idea a few times in the past...making a painting from a close up crop of a previous painting.

Shady Characters-Flamingos

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Mike was the great host. Those were terrific reference photos.
I decided on these dramatically lit flamingos. The picture almost turns into an abstract with a slight squint of the eyes.
The mysterious shade/colors was the challenging feature of this.
Hope you like it!

Goldfinch

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to The Yellow Challenge at DPW posted by Abbey Ryan .
Abbey gave quite a discourse on the color yellow. Check it out at the Challenge.

I really love to paint these bright little birds. The goldfinch's favorite food is thistle seed. The purple thistle patch where they hang out is a great complement to the goldfinch! God has the ultimate artistic eye!

The board was first toned with a reddish acrylic. It looked so good to me as I was painting, I wound up letting it serve as much of the background.

Spirit-Osprey

Close ups

Oil on 6x6 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Li was the gracious hostess. Thanks for the great reference photos.

Li offered many beautiful reference photos. This one called out to me the loudest. The beautiful osprey! She found it on the ground with a broken leg and wing. With help, she managed to get it to a conservation group. I do hope it recovered to be flying again.

Not too much to say about this except I pushed color variety and used well loaded brush strokes. It was educational and enjoyable.
