The Ride-Figurative

 Close ups

 Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Ai, from Thailand, was the gracious host this week who provided a bunch of colorful photos!

I settled on doing the rider. The toughest problem was trying to straighten out the shadows and legs as I eliminated the "horse whisperer" walking on the other side. Then, making up the background is always a challenge for me.

Here's the original photo

The Picker-Banjo-Figurative

 Close ups

 Notan
Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Ros did the honor of hosting this week and provided a bunch of great photos!

Musicians seem to be good subjects. Studious, concentrating, the goal of producing audio art! That's the attitude I usually look for.

The challenge was to do a value sketch (notan)in three tones – black, grey and white.
Simplify - do a very simple line shape sketch.
Squint - Reduce the shapes to as few as possible.
Small - Work small and fast – if your sketch is too complex do another more simplified.

I tried the notan approach and I can see how it would be very beneficial. Like many others I've always been in a hurry to start slappin' paint on. This forces you to slow down and plan. I didn't follow my notan very closely, but, hey...I'm new to it!

I did the sketch on the panel with a Tombow Pen. It did some nice blurring and backwashing when I applied thin acrylics to tone the support ( it's not waterproof like I thought it was). So I left some of it visible in the finished work.
This is about 90% painting knife.

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking and commenting!

Charger-Carousel horse

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Elaine did the honor of hosting this week and provided a bunch of great photos!

For the challenge this week, Elaine submitted all black and white reference photos to work from. Pointing out once again, that if the values are right the painting will look right. Colors are of a secondary importance.
C&C welcome. Thanks for taking a peek and commenting.

Oil on a 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Helen was the host and provided a bunch of great photos!

This colt/filly just reminded me of Spring. The weather has turned kinda nasty around here. So it provided a welcome break.

Breakfast Of Champions- Foal And Mare

 Close ups

Ink sketch toned with thinned Alizarin Crimson
Oil on 5x7 canvas board.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Lin was the gracious hostess.

I had to try the foal going for the gusto!
Spring is my favorite time of year. All the new life is a gift from God. It adds continuance and meaning.

I first toned the panel with thinned Alizarin Crimson.

Dream Gift-Pony

 Close ups

Oil on 5x7 canvas board.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Maureen was the gracious hostess.

Had another bout with the back and COPD combo. I must have quit the meds too soon...but I'm back on 'em now and feeling a whole lot better.

This pony made me think of the millions of kids who have wished for a pony for Christmas.

This is oil on a 5x7 canvas panel.

A Tribute-Mare

 Close ups

Acrylic on 12x9 gessoed art board.

Remember the cutting horse painting I posted 6 days ago on Nov. 8th? Well, This painting is for that same lady. It's a tribute painting for her friend who, sadly, just lost this 4 year old mare.

I used basically the same mixed media technique as I did on her Nov. 8th piece. The only difference being that I first applied gesso and let it dry showing the brushstrokes. They wind up showing nicely in the finished painting. I also toned the board with a red acrylic which helps to harmonize/unify the painting. And, yep, I also used a black Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen.

Hope you like it...let me know what you think...pro or con.

Let There Be....

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to The Horsing Around Challenge at DPW posted by Carol Marine.
Carol posted this great photo of a horse in morning light. It will be fun to see all the different takes on this.
This painting reminded me of God saying, "Let there be light". On blessed mornings His light shows us the wonders of his Creation.

I did this piece with a painting knife. It's a relatively new technique for me. It's difficult to give up the control of a brush. But highly rewarding to see the possibilities of expressiveness that the knife offers! I hope you like it! :)

In The Wind-Horses

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Mo was the great hostess. Thanks for the terrific reference photos.

I liked the look/possibilities of the horses in a reference photo.
Once again, I used the palette knife for this. More and more I find the palette knife to be very freeing from the compulsion for detail. The knife is a terrific tool to inject creative expressiveness into a painting. Confession...I did use a brush for eyes, and nostrils. It was great fun.

Fun On The Run-Polo Horse

Close ups

My last painting of 2011
Happy New Year Everybody!!!

Acrylic and Pitt Pen on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Christine was the great host. She supplied the terrific reference photos.

My title refers to the horse on the run and me having fun.

This is something a little different for me.
It's acrylic and Pitt Pen on 7x5 hardboard.
The hardboard is really slick, so the watery acrylic beaded and puddled much, I guess, like Yupo paper. I like the expressionist color and paint movement.

On The Wind-Horse

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The host, Skappy, provided the photos.

I had to paint this beautiful horse. It made me think that her spirit was running on the wind, inspiring her to try to keep up .

When I first started on this one, I was very hesitant... not knowing which direction to take it. One color suggested the next color. So I wound up with this. It was so unplanned, it's like looking at someone else's work. I kinda like it.

Thanks for looking!

This beautiful rose was painted by the very gifted artist, Liz Holm! It is her gift to me in my moleskin as part of The Flying Moleskin project.

To Liz: I absolutely love it, Liz! I have personally always found roses to be nearly impossible to paint, so this great gift from you is amazing!

I will cherish it!

Bustin' Loose

Close ups

Acrylic on 5x7 hardboard.

Bustin' loose is a rodeo term that refers to the roper...It can also refer to how I felt about doing this painting.

For a change, I didn't gesso the support as I normally do, so the surface was pretty smooth. I started it with colorful random washes...watching how they swirled and puddled on the fairly slick surface. I applied thicker acrylics in some select areas.
I also used a black Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen.
This technique was very freeing and I enjoyed it!
