The Castles Of Wales


Photochrom pictures shot in Wales at the end of the 19th century. They were originally published by the Detroit Publishing Company after being created by image-makers fascinated by the nation's castles and sweeping landscapes.

The result is a cross between a photograph and a painting that depicts famous Welsh castles and landscapes in a unique way. Like postcards, the photochroms feature subjects that appeal to travelers, including landscapes, architecture, street scenes, and daily life and culture.

The History Of Russia In 70,000 Photos


'The History of Russia' is an enormous joint archive project from Moscow's Multimedia Art Museum and Yandex, Russia's largest search engine.

The archive contains over 70,000 photos, gathered from more than 40 institutions and collections and representing over 150 years of photographs capturing all sorts of scenes of Russian life.

How Photo Retouching Worked Before Photoshop


Retouching has been around almost as long as photography itself, but instead of taking place on a computer, as it does now, it originally took place on the negative. Photographers and retouching specialists would scrape their film with knives, draw or paint on top of it, and even paste multiple negatives together to create a single print.

And just like today, photographers and critics of the 19th and 20th centuries debated the ethics of retouching. Public enthusiasm for the practice has risen and fallen in waves, but retouching has been an integral part of photography.

World War I In Photos: Animals At War

Horses by the millions were put in service as cavalry mounts, but they were not the only animals active in the war.
