Stops Along the Way

The Thread that Weaves: I have been working my way through an online workshop taught by Roxanne Evans Stout from River Garden Studio

I have been taking my time on this project and savoring each step along the way.

She has just decided to extend sign-ups through spring. At the end of the workshop, not only will you have a handmade book to treasure but through Roxanne's videos and exercises, you will better be able to identify the "thread that weaves" through your art.

The Big Road Trip: Join Marit Barentsen from Marit's Paper World as she takes a virtual trip across the United States.

Every Monday, starting 2/25/13, Marit will highlight a city or state by first sharing a guest post from a local who will talk about their home from an artist's point of view and then post her reader's thoughts and experiences about the same place. There is no charge for gas and no tolls along the way. This is one trip you will not want to miss.

------------------------------------

One Fish Taco and Half an Order of Guacamole: Lynn Cohen from Getting my Feet Wet has just released a book that highlights her experience of one year of drawing in public over lunch at the restaurant Tacos Jalisco.

Filled cover to cover with her sketches and accompanying thoughts, this book is a gem. The drawings are filled with life and a bit of whimsy too. Any artist who has ever dealt with the self consciousness that comes with drawing in public will doubly appreciate this book.

------------------------------------

The Ground: The third issue of The Ground print magazine was just released. The Ground is a current, edgy magazine that focuses on art, music, photography, and fashion.

It is also a community of artists and writers that offers many networking opportunities. This recent issue is titled The Balance, and like all their issues, also focuses on a charity - in this case Unicef.

------------------------------------

El Anatsui: Those of you who are in or close to NYC have the opportunity to see Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui at the Brooklyn Museum. El Anatsui is a Nigerian-based artist who creates the most amazing sculptural pieces made from found materials - most often bottle caps.

These shimmering pieces, which he manipulates almost like fabric, are large in scale, completely unique, and truly awe inspiring. The following picture gives you an idea of the size.

The Craft Donkey: Lacey from The Craft Donkey is highlighting some of my work and words on her site in a section aptly titled Men Craft Too!

If you have never been there, her website focuses on craft-related tutorials, challenges and giveaways. Thanks so much Lacey for spotlighting my work and my blog.

The Daily News

The Pulse Charity Auction for Hurricane Sandy aid ended last night at midnight. I want to thank everybody who visited the site, donated an item, spread the word, and bid. Once again, I am in awe at the amazingness of our community. In total, $2,375 was raised. 100% of that will be sent to The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City and they will use 100% of the donation for dispersement to relief organizations and their efforts. If you would like to make a donation, click here.

I have been setting up my teaching schedule for 2013 and hopefully will be at a venue near you. The entire schedule will be posted soon. I will be teaching in New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington State, New Jersey, and Arizona. And who knows where else. The full schedule will go online soon but I wanted to tell you about several opportunities now...

I will be teaching Mixed Media Memoire at Ink About It in Westford, Massachusetts. This 2-day workshop will be held on April 6th-April 7th. Registration opens tomorrow, Tuesday 11/13/12 at 9:30am. In this workshop, you will be making a one-of-a-kind artist book. In the process, you will learn a new binding technique. We will be making pockets, folds, flaps, and mini-books, altering personal photos, creating mail art, trying out various approaches to collage, using found objects, making commercial products your own, and more!

----------------------------------------

My 52 Card Pickup workshop at the Little Bird Creations Studio in NYC on December 2nd is now full. A second day has been added on January 6th and registration is now open. In this workshop, we will be using a deck of cards to create a unique journal that you can use weekly for one year. This is a project-based workshop but you will learn many techniques using gesso, acrylic paint, acrylic glazes and collage.

----------------------------------------
I am very excited to be teaching a collaborative workshop at Little Bird in NYC called The Need to Tell Stories. I will be working alongside Roxanne Evans Stout and Elizabeth Wix in this 2-day workshop on March 9th-March 10th. We will be making a handmade artist book and filling it will both art and stories. I think this will be a magical weekend. There are 5 spots left and I hope that you can join us.

I would love to meet those of you who are close to NYC this coming weekend when I will be exhibiting at the Parallax Art Fair. Parallax opens on Friday 11/16 with a private view showing from 7-9pm. It is open to the public on Saturday 11/17 and Sunday 11/18 from 11am-5pm. It is being held at the Prince George Ballroom on 15 East 27th Street in Manhattan. Entrance is free but you can order tickets in advance here

Weekend at Parallax

This past weekend I was an exhibiting artist at the inaugural Parallax Art Fair in NYC. The event was held at 82 Mercer Street in SoHo. Approximately 180 emerging and established artists exhibited and there was a tremendous variety of art on display.

Mercer Street

The opening on Friday night was mobbed. There were literally hundreds of people there and the atmosphere was charged.

I was very happy with the location of my booth, which was shared with two wonderful artists: Amanda Mudrovich and Eileen Williams.

I chose to display two series: Interior Angles (acrylic) and Passages (Mixed Media).

Interior Angles

Happy to be able to say that I sold a number of pieces.

Since you all couldn't be there to see the work in person, I decided to bring the work to you.
