Friday Frolics - What Do You Value Most?

Do you know what you value most in life? This week's quiz will let you find out.

KL is overcast today, in fact, the entire country could be experiencing the same shrouded skies due to volcano Mount Raung emitting ash and smoke. More that hundreds of flights from Bali have been cancelled as a result. The airport has been closed. Thousands of holidaymakers are stranded on the island. Bali is a popular holiday destination.

Happy Friday, everyone!

You Value Achievement

You are a very goal driven person, and you think that people should know exactly what they want out of life.

You strive to succeed, and you don't mind a good challenge. In fact, life is a little boring when it's too easy.

You especially are driven to achieve things that no one else has achieved before. You get a thrill from being first.

You are a trail blazer, and you enjoy others recognizing your accomplishments. You never lack drive or motivation.

Shoppiing in Bali, Indonesia

Source: Wikipedia

Bali was where a colleague escaped to for a good few days of R and R. She and her group stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel at the Kuta area. They were even taken by their guide to where the Bali bombing took place back in October 12, 2002. Today, Bali is back to her bubbling, busy self with tourists flocking back in droves for its relaxing and touristy atmosphere.

She came home a happy camper, her biggest shopping haul being the five paintings that she bought at prices unheard of here in Malaysia. Cause for celebration for her, naturally. Only thing is she had to remove the paintings from the frames citing she won't be able to get them on board the plane. Pity.

She brought back a lot of gifts for friends and family. She gifted me with a carved wooden bangle. It's red, exactly what I was looking for. It looks quite like the one in the picture here.

She has promised she'd invite us to her home once the paintings are up on the wall. Can't wait.

Shopping Tip - If you are going to Bali, leave ample room in luggage for shopping. You won't regret it.

Plane crash at Denpasar, Bali

A passenger jet operated by budget airline Lion Air was earlier reported to have missed the runway in Denpasar, Bali. It was later correctly reported by the authorities that the plane had in fact landed in the sea as it was coming in to land. Everyone onboard survived.

From the image, you could see the plane partially submerged in the water with inflatable slides deployed from the front exits and a large crack in the fuselage towards the rear of the aircraft. Passengers in life jackets could be seen in the water.

The plane, a Boeing 737-800 was carrying 101 passengers and seven crew members - including 95 adults, five children, and one baby. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in the incident or what the nationalities of the passengers were.

Lion Air, a little-known carrier launched 13 years ago with just one plane, has in recent times struck two of the world's largest aircraft orders in a staggering $46 billion bet on Indonesia's air transport boom.

France announced last month that Indonesia's fastest-growing airline had agreed to buy 234 medium-haul A320 jets worth $23.8 billion (18.4 billion euros) from European aerospace giant Airbus.

It came after Lion Air astounded the industry with a $22.4 billion deal for 230 Boeing 737 airliners, inked in 2011 as a visiting US President Barack Obama looked on.

Bali is a hugely popular holiday destination, welcoming millions of foreign tourists from around the world every year.

6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Bali

I just read about a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Bali, shaking buildings and sending tourists running out of hotels. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

A technician just finished changing my printer cartridge when my colleague's email came in about the quake. A funny thought came to mind. Would people also rescue the printer cartridge in an emergency if such an item is a rare commodity? Silly me but then again, it makes sense to save printers ink cartridges if your livelihood depends on them. Wouldn't you agree?

Back to the quake, the epicentre of the quake was about 100 miles (160km) southwest of the island's capital Denpasar, according to the U.S. geological survey.

Endro Tjahjono, head of information at Bali's meteorology agency, said there was no tsunami potential and no reports of aftershocks. Cracks appeared in the walls and glass lobby windows of his office in the southern town of Kuta, and some top floor ceilings fell off, he said.

Indonesia is on the Pacific's "Rim of Fire" and gets regular earthquakes.

A Bali vacation

H, a colleague, and her family go to Bali at least once a year. She said her family likes the place and is a cheap vacation destination. Friends who have been there also vouch that a holiday in Bali is money's worth, plus the exchange rate is to our advantage and the shopping is excellent. You can get designer wear for a much lower price than if you were to buy them here.

By the way, did you know that Indonesia Visa fees have increased. The new Visa fees for all nationalities are as follows:

(Business)

4. Limites/Temporary stay Visa (Visa Tinggal Terbatas)
a) 6 months = RM190
b) 12 months = RM375
c) 24 months = RM660 way
