Haunt of the forgotten

Who are the people in the photograph, and where are they? Who was here before they came, and where did they go? Does anything live on, hidden, underneath? I am reading a book called 1491, about the Americas before the Europeans came. The Western hemisphere may have been more populous than the Eastern - there was simply no immunity to the diseases that came with the Europeans.
