Censorship of war casualties in the US

"Pictures [of dead or dying American troops] have rarely been seen in recent years from Iraq and Afghanistan," acknowledged The New York Times in September 2009. "This was not the case during the Vietnam War."

Why is it so easy for political leaders in the US to convince ordinary citizens to support war?

How is it that, after that initial enthusiasm has given away to fatigue and disgust, the reaction is mere disinterest rather than righteous rage?

Even when the reasons given for taking the US to war were proven to have been not only wrong, but brazenly fraudulent - as in Iraq, which hadn't possessed chemical weapons since 1991 - no one is called to account.

A Berkeley County South Caroline woman will get a jury trial for a ticket she was given by police for displaying big plastic testicles on the back of her pickup truck.

Virginia Tice of Bonneau was given a $445 ticket July 5 that accuses her of violating the state's obscene bumper sticker law.

Police Chief Franco Fuda asked for a jury trial, saying questions of obscenity should be determined by community standards.

Yet, the same FBI gives 19 7th-Century Simpleton Muslims credit for carrying out one of the best orchestrated and technically difficult attacks on America: 9/11. Could it be that the FBI does not also believe that these simpletons carried out this crime?

As recently as January 2009, the FBI thought its agents ought to know the following crucial information about Muslims:

•They engage in a “circumcision ritual”
•More than 9,000 of them are in the U.S. military
•Their religion “transforms [a] country’s culture into 7th-century Arabian ways.”

The briefing presents much information that has nothing to do with crime and everything to do with constitutionally-protected religious practice and social behavior, such as estimating the number of mosques in America and listing the states with the largest Muslim populations.

Former Fox host Glenn Beck gave a public relations pep talk in the Israeli parliament today, urging legislators not to mince words that the conflict with the Palestinians threatens Israel’s existence.

Mr. Beck is making three solidarity trips to the Jewish state this year at a time when Israelis are anxiety ridden about diplomatic and economic isolation from the deep freeze in the peace process. The parliamentary hearing comes just days after Mr. Beck hosted his last program on the Fox News channel.

Following Beck’s comments today, the Israeli Knesset approved a controversial bill that outlaws calls for boycotts of either Israel or its settlements in the West Bank, reflecting the deep unease Israel feels about its position in the world. The law says that people calling for a boycott can be sued, without the plaintiffs having to prove damages.
