New Book, Fighting Depression Without Drugs

[From review]
Matt Haig, a British novelist, had a nervous breakdown at 24 and slipped into a suicidal depression. But when medications left him feeling even worse, he decided to battle against the disease on his own. Within a decade, he had climbed his way out of the depths, a harrowing journey he chronicles in his new book, “Reasons To Stay Alive”(Penguin Books, out now). The 40-year-old father of two tells The Post how he’s thriving despite mental illness.
[. . .]
There is something therapeutic about reading. For a story to be a story, it has to involve change to a character or a situation. When you are stuck in a situation or in that moment, just believing in change is nourishing. Even if it’s not good or positive, just the idea of it is positive.
[. . .]
I found the writing experience very therapeutic. Being published isn’t always good for your mental health, because you are suddenly very exposed and there’s a fear of criticism. But the act of writing was.
Slowly, the fog lifted.
[. . .]
And many therapists I’ve spoken to since say I was actually getting therapy — I was just doing it to myself, by making myself face my own fears.
But I wouldn’t say that I’m cured. I still get bouts of anxiety, but I know how to manage them. I just allow myself to feel them. It’s not going to kill me. It’s unpleasant, but it’s a way to cope.
I thought that by my mid-20s, there was going to be nothing great in my life again. But there has been far more happiness and far more meaningful relationships after the illness.

Texas Democrats, Unlawfully Reveal Medical Records Of District Attorney, Openly Show Bigotry Toward Persons With Disabilities

David Woo/Staff Photographer
Dallas District Attorney Susan Hawk talks to reporters outside her office at the Frank Crowley Courts building on Oct. 1, her first day back at work after missing more than two months to deal with an episode of "severe depression."

Indicates routine lawlessness of Democrats revealing medical records in violation of privacy laws. But also it shows bigotry of Democrats against persons with disabilities contrary to state and US discrimination laws. No shame for Democrats who openly violate laws, constitutional protections and individual rights.

[From article]
Hawk, a Republican, wanted to resign in July because of suicidal thoughts, according to the magazine. Instead, she spent two months at the Menninger Clinic, a premier psychiatric hospital in Houston.
D Magazine reported that Hawk thought about overdosing on sleeping pills before she checked herself into the mental health facility. While there, she was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, considered strangling herself with a blow dryer cord and, at one point, was officially committed after telling a nurse: “I’m going to kill myself anyway. Just let me go home,” the magazine reported after an interview with Hawk.
Dallas County Democrats responded Sunday by releasing a statement in which they moved beyond nuanced calls for her resignation and explicitly pushed for her ouster.
“Just weeks ago, our top law enforcement official was involuntarily committed after threatening to kill herself. … In view of the facts that have just recently been revealed, Susan owes it to herself, not to mention her nearly 500 employees and the taxpayers, to resign and to concentrate on getting well,” party chairwoman Carol Donovan said.
Hawk clarified Sunday night that she was at the facility “voluntarily the entire time.” The D Magazine story said she checked herself into the hospital but became committed after threatening to kill herself.
“I’m good. I’m healthy,” Hawk told The Dallas Morning News late Sunday. “I’m not going to let this sort of attack get to me or change that. The reason I told my story is because I wanted to help people. It’s that simple.”
[. . .]
Dallas County Republican Party Chairman Wade Emmert shot back on Twitter, denouncing the Democrats as hypocrites for attacking Hawk but supporting Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is under federal indictment.

Laughing Gas May Cure Depression Better Than Psychiatrc Drugs

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is also a popular party drug; revelers in Spain take a hit above.

Using laughing gas instead of psychiatric drugs may also end the mass murders by unhappy people who take those drugs. Watch for the push back from the drug industry.

[From article]
It seems almost too obvious, but it appears that laughing gas could help lift depression.
In a pilot study, nitrous oxide helped patients for whom no other treatments, including conventional drugs, worked.
Three patients said their symptoms disappeared almost completely after inhaling the gas.
Long used to relax dental patients, laughing gas is also a popular party drug.
People who inhale ‘hippie crack’ from balloons say it gives them a brief but intense feeling of euphoria.

Walking Beats Drugs For Feeling Good

Walking can beat stress and boost mood, according to U.S. researchers. They found it was especially beneficial for people going through a tough time, like the death of a loved one or splitting up with a partner.
[From article]
'Our findings suggest something as simple as joining an outdoor walking group may not only improve someone's daily positive emotions but may also contribute a non-pharmacological [non-drug] approach to serious conditions like depression.
'Group walks in local natural environments may make a potentially important contribution to public health and be beneficial in helping people cope with stress and experience improved emotions.'
The findings add to the growing body of research on the benefits of taking a stroll.
Previous studies have found that walking can delay the onset of cancer, help stave off obesity, heart disease and diabetes as well as lowering blood pressure.
Walking for 40 minutes a day seemed to increase the size of people's brains, according to one study, improving their memory and protecting against dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Feeling down? Get some fresh air: Taking a walk really does beat stress - without the need for antidepressants
Walking is especially beneficial for people going through a tough time
Strolling through natural settings such as woodlands and mountains best

Non Hollywood History of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow

This historical account of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker mentions the role the prison system had in creating the monster that was Clyde Barrow. Think of all the police and civilians who were murdered by this gang after horrific abuse suffered by Barrow while in prison for theft during the Great Depression. Dehumanizing criminals by police continues in 2013, where police refer to suspects as "dirt bags," and "scum bags."

Clyde Barrow in 1926, aged 16

[From article]
According to John Neal Phillips, Barrow's goal in life was not to gain fame or fortune from robbing banks, but to seek revenge against the Texas prison system for the abuses he suffered while serving time.
[. . ]
After Barrow was released from prison in February 1932, he and Ralph Fults assembled a rotating core group of associates and began a series of small robberies, primarily of stores and gas stations; their goal was to collect enough money and firepower to launch a raid of liberation against Eastham prison.
[. . .]
On January 16, 1934, Barrow finally made his long-contemplated move against the Texas Department of Corrections as he orchestrated the escape of Raymond Hamilton, Henry Methvin and several others in the infamous "Eastham Breakout" of 1934.[26] The Texas prison system received national negative publicity from the brazen raid, and Barrow appeared to have achieved what Phillips describes as the burning passion in his life: exacting revenge on the Texas Department of Corrections.
[. . .]
Historical perspective
Through the decades, many cultural historians have analyzed Bonnie's and Clyde's enduring appeal to the public imagination. E.R. Milner, an historian, writer, and expert on Bonnie and Clyde and their era, put the duo's enduring appeal to the public, both during the Depression and continuing on through the decades, into historical and cultural perspective. To those people who, as Milner says, "consider themselves outsiders, or oppose the existing system," Bonnie and Clyde represent the ultimate outsiders, revolting against an uncaring system. "The country's money simply declined by 38 percent", explains Milner, author of The Lives and Times of Bonnie and Clyde. "Gaunt, dazed men roamed the city streets seeking jobs ... Breadlines and soup kitchens became jammed. (In rural areas) foreclosures forced more than 38 percent of farmers from their lands (while simultaneously) a catastrophic drought struck the Great Plains ... By the time Bonnie and Clyde became well known, many had felt the capitalistic system had been abused by big business and government officials ... Now here were Bonnie and Clyde striking back."

Widespread Depression

[Report from the Trenches of America]

Depressed?

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick
up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the
Promised Land."
Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your
asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land."
Now Obama has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the price of
camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!
I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the
economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, Social Security, retirement funds,
etc, . . . I called Lifeline. I got a call center in Pakistan. I told
them I was suicidal.
They got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck....
