Intolerance, Bigotry and Tragedies at Vanderbilt University

In case you missed the hoopla, I was almost run off the Vanderbilt University campus in 2015 by student protesters and petitions denouncing me for bigotry and hatred. This was related to an opinion piece I wrote for The Tennessean about the Islamic faith and the need for Muslims to fully integrate themselves into our society. As a high profile, black, conservative woman on the Vanderbilt faculty, I was a conspicuous target.
During my sabbatical last year, I became the target of harassment and a petition demanding that I be suspended until I submitted to mandatory sensitivity training. That’s a rather odd request of a first-generation college graduate and a person who has overcome poverty, attained tenured positions at Princeton University and Vanderbilt, and had her research cited by the U.S. Supreme Court. My Christian faith, not my race and gender, defines me. It shapes the perspective I now share with you about Vanderbilt, where I have taught for the past 16 years.
Vanderbilt has excelled in many ways during my time here, but in other areas, such as those related to religious freedom and free speech, its policies have led to an unhealthy environment, making it more difficult for some students to thrive spiritually and mentally. On top of all that, there has been a series of unfortunate events that secular-minded people will dismiss as coincidental. The campus has been shaken by untimely deaths. So far in 2016 we have had one current student (Taylor Force) and two former students (Justin and Stephanie Shults) killed in separate terrorist attacks abroad just weeks apart. Force died March 8 in a terrorist attack during, of all things, a school trip to Israel. Two weeks later, the Shultses were victims of the Brussels airport bombing.
That must defy any reasonable actuarial tables for one university, especially one in denial about the threat of radical Islam. But there’s more. In the last three weeks, two undergraduate students have been found dead in their dorm rooms. One death occurred on April 22 (Cheryl Alexandra Morris). Another student (Elliot Meister) was found dead on April 27. We grieve the deaths of these young people and pray for their parents and loved ones. Nevertheless, we wonder if more could have done for Cheryl Alexandra and Elliot.

That’s not all that’s happened at Vanderbilt in recent times. Going back just a year or two, we can see where the University has witnessed more than its fair share of tragedy and mishaps, to include the rape case involving Vanderbilt football players. There’s even the quirky: last year, a tree fell and injured several people in a group of prospective students and their parents touring the campus. What are the odds of a tree falling on visiting parents and prospective students on an otherwise calm day? Note: it happened right outside the admissions office. Only God knows if this means anything.

Vanderbilt’s run of bad luck over the years includes problems at its medical school and affiliated hospital as well as an embezzlement case involving an administrator who engaged in inappropriate behavior with a minor. Non-Christians can scoff at all this, ridiculing me for even broaching the possibility of a spiritual connection between the series of unfortunate incidents at Vanderbilt University and its hostility toward orthodox Christians, as evidenced by its 2011 adoption of a “non-discrimination” policy that has resulted in 14 Christian groups losing their recognition as student organizations. The groups no longer recognized on campus gave up their registered group status rather than compromise on Christian values and principles.

I wonder if there is a spiritual connection between Vanderbilt’s treatment of the Christian groups and some of its recent tragedies. We will never know for sure. Nevertheless, I would like to see Vanderbilt University reconsider the policy that deprives its campus of the vibrant Christian influence that existed before the University adopted its 2011 “policy. Are Universities Run By Intolerant Bigots?

The spread of bigoted racism and displays of abysmal ignorance at what are supposed to be centers of learning in the United States and Britain is saddening and appears to be out of control. In recent days, displays of that inverted racism and bigotry, including outbreaks of anti-Semitism and animosity toward the memory of Cecil Rhodes, the wealthy mining magnate who initiated Rhodes Scholarships, have been exhibited at Oxford University and Oberlin College. Now the bigotry is being inflated in nonsensical fashion again at Oxford, joined by absurd protestors from Royal Holloway College, London in March madness.
A group at Oxford called Rhodes Must Fall (RMF),

began on March 9, 2015, when a student at UCT threw human feces at the statue of Cecil Rhodes.

the Rhodes statue was removed a month later, on April 9, 2015.
[. . .]
on April 25, 2015, the president, a man named Mcebo Dlamini, of the Students' Representative Council of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg (Wits University), a South African research university where Nelson Mandela had studied, told us in his Facebook post that he loved Adolf Hitler and admired the Nazi leader for his "charisma and organizational skills."
Dlamini was following a graphic comparing the State of Israel to Nazi Germany.

He also told us that every white person has "an element of Adolf Hitler."

he wanted to know why there were no statues of Hitler in Poland, Germany, or Austria, while elsewhere there were statues of Rhodes and Jan van Riebeeck, the colonial administrator. In a mystifying statement, this brilliant scholar informed us that those two were worse than Hitler because "Hitler only killed bodies."
Dlamini was not examined by a psychiatrist, but he was dismissed as president of the student body on charges of "misconduct." His criticism of Jewish South African entrepreneurs Barney Barnato and Harry Oppenheimer were not mentioned. Not surprisingly, the dismissal was opposed by the Rhodes Must Fall movement.
Interestingly, the bigots, becoming more physically militant and destroying property, buses and cars, and the office of the vice chancellor of the university, also vandalized the statue of Jan Smuts, who was British-educated, was twice prime minister of South Africa, and took part in the founding of the United Nations. In Britain, a group at Christ's College, Cambridge, where Smuts was educated, has called for severing a memorial fund left by him.
The Rhodes Must Fall movement spread to the 690-year-old Oriel College, where Rhodes had studied and which he funded. It demanded that the statue of Rhodes at Oriel, high above a doorway, be removed. The Oxford Student Union in January 2016 voted, 245-212, to remove the statue, but the College has not done so. It was immediately aware that potential donors were threatening to withdraw funds worth more than £100 million. It was forced to postpone or abandon a fundraising campaign, while saying euphemistically that the Rhodes situation was a reminder of the complexity of history and the legacies of colonialism.
As always in the case of bigots, hypocrisy was not absent from the RMF movement that argued, at best, that the Rhodes statue was at odds with "inclusive culture" at Oxford and that there should be "decolonization" of the curriculum. The case is clear. The RMF leader, a man named Ntokozo Qwabe, was himself a beneficiary of the Rhodes bequest and had been funded by the Rhodes scholarship during his time as an undergraduate law student at Keble College, Oxford.
The National Union of Students' black students campaign addressed Oxford as "one of the most male, pale, and stale places of learning in Britain."

Rhodes's company maintained law and order, but Britain reserved supreme control, and no slave trade was allowed. The ignorant students did not understand that in the British constitutional monarchy, the Queen reigned but did not rule, since the government made decisions. Those students maligned the innocent Victoria.
It is sad that this nonsense in Britain is taking place at a time and place, when the British head of counterintelligence, the Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner, Mark Rowley, has informed the country that ISIS is planning a "spectacular" attack on British soil. Ten years after 7/7 (July 7, 2005, when terrorist attacks in Central London killed 52 and injured hundreds), an increasing number of suspects are being held. It is disconcerting that three quarters of those arrested are British nationals, 14 per cent are female, and 13 percent are under 20.
The answer to bigots is obvious and can be simply stated. It might take three forms. First, since they find Oxford so undesirable, why not go elsewhere to be educated? There are universities in Iran, Syria, Yemen, and Libya.
Secondly, those students who go farther and are more aggressive than mere verbal dissent and who engage in violent activity and unacceptable racist remarks should be prosecuted or expelled from college. Quiet, lonely study is not for them.
Thirdly, those who, like Qwabe, have accepted generous funding, originating from Rhodes or elsewhere, should give the money back. That would be a real rejection of "colonialism" and an indication of real moral principle.

Hawk, a Republican, wanted to resign in July because of suicidal thoughts, according to the magazine. Instead, she spent two months at the Menninger Clinic, a premier psychiatric hospital in Houston.
D Magazine reported that Hawk thought about overdosing on sleeping pills before she checked herself into the mental health facility. While there, she was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, considered strangling herself with a blow dryer cord and, at one point, was officially committed after telling a nurse: “I’m going to kill myself anyway. Just let me go home,” the magazine reported after an interview with Hawk.
Dallas County Democrats responded Sunday by releasing a statement in which they moved beyond nuanced calls for her resignation and explicitly pushed for her ouster.
“Just weeks ago, our top law enforcement official was involuntarily committed after threatening to kill herself. … In view of the facts that have just recently been revealed, Susan owes it to herself, not to mention her nearly 500 employees and the taxpayers, to resign and to concentrate on getting well,” party chairwoman Carol Donovan said.
Hawk clarified Sunday night that she was at the facility “voluntarily the entire time.” The D Magazine story said she checked herself into the hospital but became committed after threatening to kill herself.
“I’m good. I’m healthy,” Hawk told The Dallas Morning News late Sunday. “I’m not going to let this sort of attack get to me or change that. The reason I told my story is because I wanted to help people. It’s that simple.”

Dallas County Republican Party Chairman Wade Emmert shot back on Twitter, denouncing the Democrats as hypocrites for attacking Hawk but supporting Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is under federal indictment.

The singer's disturbing behaviour was laid bare in an old clip which resurfaced on the TV show It Was Alright In The 1960s on Saturday night.
In it, the Beatles idol can be seen pulling faces and making exaggerated movements in an offensive manner.

In 1965 he was awarded the MBE along with the rest of the Beatles, but bragged later that he had smoked cannabis at the Palace. A year later he opined that the Beatles were ‘more popular than Jesus’, a comment which caused offence to the Christian faith.
It has also been claimed that Lennon was often 'briefed' by IRA sympathisers and even suggested playing a benefit concert for the IRA after Bloody Sunday in January 1972.
Then there was the bitter breakdown of Lennon's marriage to first wife Cynthia, which came to a head in February 1968 when he drunkenly confessed to sleeping with other women.
The musician was murdered by Mark Chapman in December 1980, aged 40, a decade after The Beatles had broken up and they had all gone onto other projects.

White House Out Of Ideas, Calls Dissenters, Crazies

The president was elected as the great black hope. He brought his degrees from Columbia University and from Harvard Law School. No one seems to know him from Columbia. One alumni who says he was a classmate of Obama works in Las Vegas. He reports that Obama was a militant Muslim when he was at Columbia. At Harvard he was president of the Law Review without writing or publishing any legal treatise. He brought promises of lowering the oceans. He was going to heal the racial divide and bring hope and change to the nation. What he brought was division. Lies. Rhetoric. Speeches with nothing behind them. Pure hot air. He began calling anyone who disagreed with him racists. Then he added they were bitter clingers to religion and guns. He added they were haters. Now into his penultimate year in office he is calling people who disagree with him the crazies. That is an improvement? He is slandering persons with disabilities as well as making clear his belief that crazy people are not to be believed, and that no one should pay any attention to them. He shows more and more of his bigotry as the more he speaks with his support teleprompter.

Just back from his annual summer vacation at Martha’s Vineyard, President Barack Obama has returned to disparaging his political adversaries and anyone who happens to disagree with him on policy.



According to a report in Politico, the president has taken to describing opponents of the hugely controversial Iran deal as “crazies.” The so-called “crazies” now include a majority of members of the House and Senate, a large chunk of the American electorate according to opinion polls, and the government of Israel, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
It is significant that several leading figures in the president’s own party have declared their opposition to the Iran deal, including Charles Schumer, the senior senator for New York, and Eliot Engel, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Relations Committee from New York.

What the race baiters do not want to admit is that true racism in this country is almost non existent but bigotry will take many generations to be eliminated.
An email is floating around with comments allegedly from an unnamed Canadian: "Only in America ...could people claim that the government still discriminates against black Americans when they have a black President, a black Attorney General and roughly 20% of the federal workforce is black while only 10% of the population is black, 40+% of all federal entitlements goes to black Americans - 3X the rate that go to whites, 5X the rate that go to Hispanics!"

[Bundy] used the words 'colored' and 'negro' but the NAACP hasn't bothered to remove the word colored from the organization's title nor has the United Negro Fund.

It was believed by reformers that by busing school children into areas that had formerly been segregated, the children would get to know and accept one another. Instead, more hostility was generated by the inconvenience and uprooting of students from their former schools.

New York taxi drivers would once drive passengers anywhere in the city until they were being robbed or killed once they arrived in Harlem or other mean streets. Is it racism to pass a black man wishing to go uptown at night or is it being street smart?

Since Obama was elected president, we have seen an uptick in crimes by persons of color. Why? Because race has been used as a shield to protect the president from any criticism and we have an attorney general who ignores black on white crimes.

Wendy Davis, of course, needs no introduction. Her filibuster of a bill to ban abortion in Texas after 20 weeks—a measure that would be uncontroversial even in Belgium or France—made her an instant star for progressives and much of the media. For them, few things are as stirring as a lonely, principled stand in favor of near-infanticide.
Her personal story was also catnip for TV producers and profile writers, who were thrilled by the trajectory of the former teen mom who lived in a mobile home and eventually earned a law degree at Harvard on the way to becoming the nation's foremost defender of late-term abortion. It's as if the protagonist of a Horatio Alger novel pulled himself up by his bootstraps and onto the board of Planned Parenthood. What's not to like?

Her version of her story has an ideological charge. So much of her allure for her feminist political base is her status as a go-it-alone single mom. That she benefited from the stability and resources of marriage can't be allowed to muddy the picture.
The Today Show interview mentioned her second marriage, but slightingly: "[Wendy] Davis married again for a time." For a time? She was married to Jeff Davis for 18 years!

Davis fumed on Twitter, "These attacks show that Greg Abbott's completely out of touch with the struggles that I faced and so many Texans face."
To suggest that Abbott is unfamiliar with struggle is offensively stupid. When Abbott was a law student in his 20s, he was out jogging when a tree fell on him, shattering his spine. He spent months recovering in the hospital and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.

Hillary Clinton has questioned the mental health of Cristina Kirchner and asked US diplomats to investigate whether the Argentinian president is taking medication to help her "calm down".
The US secretary of state painted Kirchner as a volatile and emotional leader who suffered from "nerves and anxiety", according to a secret cable sent to the US embassy in Buenos Aires.

In a section headed "mental state and health" she asked how the first lady-turned president was managing "her nerves and anxiety" in a blunt tone which suggested US concerns.
"How does stress affect her behaviour toward advisers and/or her decision-making? What steps does Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner or her advisers/handlers take in helping her deal with stress? Is she taking any medications?
"Under what circumstances is she best able to handle stresses? How do Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's emotions affect her decision-making and how does she calm down when distressed?"

This is evidence of the negative stereotyping that Hillary Clinton places on a psychiatric diagnosis. It indicates that in spite of her claim to be compassionate and sensitive to vulnerable persons she is a mean-spirited bigot toward persons with disabilities. In addition it is established US law that medical records are private. It appears that Hillary Clinton took up the standards employed by Barack Obama in his election campaigns. He used personal matters to defame an opponent. But this is also an attack on all persons with disabilities. It shows how shameless this alleged Democratic candidate is and to what length she will go to obtain her ends, just like Obama. For Clinton persons with disabilities must know their place i.e., to be satisfied getting treatment from experts approved by the upper class elite.

Fox News in Boston Exhibits Irrational, Hateful Opinions on Disabled Persons

On July 20, 2012 Fox 25, WFXT-TV Ten O'Clock news Mr. Jack Levin appeared and discussed with Mark Ockerbloom, the shootings in Aurora Colorado. Levin said,"The shooter, James Holmes may have a long history of mental illness." He suggests if Holmes did have a history it would explain why he shot the theater patrons. Oh? And on what evidence does Mr. Levin base this hatred of persons with disabilities? Are all persons accused of mental illness violent? Clearly Levin is clueless about any statistics. Perhaps he is a paid lobbyist for the drug companies or their puppets the psychiatric industry. He shares the hateful attitude of the drug companies and their lobbyist NAMI which promotes forced drug treatment. It is all about the Benjamins not about reason or evidence.

Rational arguments are not a requirement for journalists. Mr. Ockerbloom and Mr. Levin seem to lack awareness of statistics and reason regarding disabilities and violence. Who are more dangerous and violent? Normal persons or persons with disabilities? Why does Fox News anchors continue to demonize persons with disabilities as if they are all dangerous? Why bash them and stay silent when an academic bigot expresses his own hatred?

It is easier to open a rock than a mind. For more than ten years I wrote to and spoke with on air anchors, and interns who share Levin's bigoted view. Homosexuals call it hate speech, of persons with disabilities. Most of the men and women I spoke with have left Fox 25 news and a new crew brings with them their misguided notion of disability. How long will it take for these alleged enlightened but misinformed or uninformed journalists broadcast their nonsense?

New York Mayoral Candidates Ignore Persons With Disabilities

Democratic "minority" elected officials demand more preferences for other "minorities" which they define as women and "others." But the Democrats exclude persons with disabilities, even in their statutory definitions of a minority. Women are a majority of the population in this nation. Whites are a minority in the world population. Why are persons with disabilities denied the ability to earn a living except at a token position as a disability commission member? The dictionary definition of bigotry is exhibited by the New York City Democratic candidates for Mayor. Currently black men are President and US Attorney General. Recently black men were Governor and Mayor of New York. Today there are hundreds of professional athletes, celebrities and corporate leaders who are multi millionaires. While wealthy and influential black people and women demand more jobs for their brothers and sisters, who advocates for jobs for and city contracts for persons with disabilities. No one is who.

Cambridge Chronicle Exhibits Bigotry

Police redacted a man's self identification of having "been diagnosed with mental illness." Is this how psychiatry works these days? How reliable is it? If he says "I'm innocent?" will that be reported if the police redact it? Medical records are protected by state and US laws. Why does the Cambridge Chronicle report this allegation without evidence in a story about crime? Do the editors and writers publish their irrational bigoted beliefs that fake psychiatric illness made him do it? What is the explanation for printing the statement of this suspect? Do all persons accused of mental illness "creep out" the editors? Would that be called disability profiling? Or do all such persons expose themselves at malls?

High Tech Evidence; Bias; Violating Privacy laws

Here is another example of a psychiatrist ignoring state and US laws, and journalists compounding the violation. It may be a surprise to journalists but few psychiatrists know the laws regulating what they do. This story shows the quoted psychiatrist violated state and US privacy laws. Only for purposes of identification of a suspect can medical records be revealed to police agencies. Releasing medical records to media is a violation as well as to the police in this case since they knew who the suspect was. But why does the Boston Herald continue to equate "a history of mental illness" with crime? The notion that they are causally connected is contrary to fact and the statistics loved by bureaucrats. It is only bias, bigotry toward persons with disabilities, slander every time the phrase is used.

Boston Phoenix Shows Bigotry

Finally Massachusetts has a statewide elected official with a disability. Who knew, US Senator Scott Brown was a "crazy person?" The Boston Phoenix exposed this closeted official with a disability. Will Sen. Brown serve as a role model for persons with disabilities everywhere? Will Emily Rooney still invite him on her show knowing he has a disability? Or will he be demonized as the Phoenix does because of his disability? Where else was it written that a person with a disability should be ignored? Who else does not listen to persons with disabilities because of the disability? Is this why police like to harass such persons? No one listens to them. Phoenix editors show their bigotry toward all persons accused of mental illness by using an allegation of disability to discredit the US Senator. It also shows that the editors have no tolerance for differing opinions on policy issues. If a person disagrees with their view, then he or she is mentally ill, wrong, stupid, evil and usually a racist too. Why limit the personal attack toward the Senator alleging disability? Isn't this also racist, homophobic, anti immigrant, and Islamophobic too?

Eagan and Bishop Show Bigotry

Eagan continues irrational stereotyping of persons with disabilities. She equates violence with mental illness as if there was a causal connection. Why are so many journalists and radio talk show hosts with a history of mental illness not institutionalized? The answer to the good Bishop's query about why the violent man was not institutionalized is that it is contrary to law to hold someone without committing a crime. Having a history of mental illness is a status. It is like being black, being a homosexual, being a woman, an illegal alien, a Muslim. Should all of the above-mentioned groups be institutionalized? The US Constitution is why. Depriving a person of freedom without Due Process is the law of the land, the same law that allows same sex marriage. Only in Cambridge and at Harvard do police and campus criminals attack and harass persons due to their fears and for allegations. Under law one must commit a crime to lose one's freedom. In Cambridge police keep unpopular persons under 24/7 surveillance, harassment, provocation, threats, ridicule, character assassination and humiliation without any legal basis allowing such abuse and denial of rights. It is what Eagan and the Bishop would prefer. Why not limit the description of the suspect to having a history of violence? What is the connection to the history of mental illness? Mental illnesses are created from personal opinion not law. Eagan and the Bishop indicate they are bigots toward persons with disabilities slurring all persons accused of mental illness. Are all homosexuals and priests pedophiles? Are all black persons psychopaths? Are all women lying, cheating abusive criminals? Are all Muslims terrorists? All illegal aliens violent felons? All journalists mercenary deceivers?

Spineless Submission to Racism Gone Wild

Here is a copy of a report submitted to the Cambridge City Council on October 31, 2011 by City Manager Robert Healy. Recently Healy was forced to accept a state court award for $8 million in damages for firing a black woman 12 years ago and settling for unknown amounts two other discrimination cases in the city. Alas Healy now joins an abuse of black officials in the city demanding 30 percent of all jobs in the school department. According to my sources the US census found Cambridge has about 12 percent black people for the last 20 years. Nonetheless someone created a new standard for how many black people should be hired. Keep in mind that no persons with disabilities are employed by the city schools and there is no attempt to address this institutionalized unlawful abuse. Black Americans are about the same percentage of the population nationally and in the city as persons with disabilities. But disabled persons remain unemployed at a 70 percent rate. It shows how thorough the bigotry is in the city of Cambridge which sees itself as morally superior to others. Do they get their misguided self image from Harvard affiliates?

According to "the newly adopted requirement, the parity rate [for hiring people of color in Cambridge Public Schools] should be 30 percent." Are 30 percent of the population of Cambridge people of color? Who created the "newly adopted requirement?" What is the requirement for hiring persons with disabilities in the Cambridge Public Schools? Is it zero percent? Do the morally superior liberals who run the city believe that all persons with disabilities are morons? What is the problem with these allegedly fair minded people trying to equalize opportunities who refuse to allow persons with disabilities to participate in life in Cambridge? Could they be bigots, who support equal opportunities only for themselves but not for others?
