The Scunthorpe Yobs - We Are The Yobs

I absolutely flipped out when I was looking over the new releases from No Front Teeth Records and saw a debut album from a band formed from the ashes of Bladder Bladder Bladder. Bladder Bladder Bladder were one of my favorite punk rock bands back in the '90s, and I was always a bit outraged that they weren't absolutely massive. So it's a thrill to come across The Scunthorpe Yobs — who represent the next chapter in the Bladder Bladder Bladder saga. The mighty Mick Bladder can still shout and offend with the best of 'em! Also on board are some heavy hitters from the last 25 years of California punk rock. The band's lineup features past and present members of Oil!, The Generators, The Randumbs, Gross Polluter, The Feelers, Trust Fund Babies, Smash The Granny, Outsiders, and The Shrinks (just to name a few). Now that's a supergroup (or at least a super group!). On their debut long player, We Are The Yobs, The Scunthorpe Yobs tear through a dozen loud-and-proud shout-along Oi! anthems in the Sham 69/Angelic Upstarts/Blitz mold. While based in Los Angeles, the band plays songs reflecting life on the streets of Scunthorpe. This is the classic Oi! sound: boisterous and hard-hitting yet still catchy as hell. If you fondly recall Bladder Bladder Bladder (is there any other way to recall them?), you'll find much to like about The Scunthorpe Yobs. Similarly, fans of any of the bands referenced above will want to get their hands on this LP (many of them already have, so don't dilly-dally!). You'll be holding a pint with one hand and hoisting your fist with the other as this record plays at an obnoxiously loud volume. We Are The Yobs is a next generation street punk classic!

Bart and the Brats - Assorted Cuts

Less than a year after the release of Bart and the Brats' full-length debut on No Front Teeth and Big Neck Records, a superb follow-up is out courtesy of the same two labels. Assorted Cuts again finds Bart De Vraantijk (Pneumonias, Wild Zeros, Teenage Hearts, The Janitors, etc.) powering through track after track of trashy '77-style garage punk that's brimming with energy & masterful in its simplicity. If you like first album Ramones, Killed By Death comps, and '90s budget punk, then Bart and the Brats ought to be your musical spirit animals. Short and sweet at a running time of just under 23 minutes, Assorted Cuts is the kind of record you'd play for extraterrestrials to demonstrate what Earthling three-chord punk rock is supposed to sound like. A touch of keyboards gives this album a slightly different feel, but the musical approach remains grounded in thumping punk minimalism. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Bart's knack for writing high quality stripped-down punk tunes is on display as always. "And Then I Drink" could be my personal anthem. "Cold Beef" kicks the living daylights out of what usually passes for "Ramonescore." "Masochistic Pigs" is truly an anthem for our times. "Kicked Out of the Webelos" is a ripping, fully Brat-ified cover of The Queers' classic. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Lo' Spider at Swampland in Toulouse, Assorted Cuts is another crackling effort from the remarkably prolific Bart and the Brats. If you want to snag a limited edition vinyl copy, be sure to hit one the links below for ordering information!

Telegenic Pleasure - Concentric Grave

Holy fucking hell! I usually try to keep this blog PG-rated, but those were the three words that latched on to me when it was time to start writing this piece. Telegenic Pleasure is a band I reviewed quite favorably back in 2019 (I was shocked to discover it was actually that long ago!). But on its second LP, the London (England and Canada!) based duo has gone mega next level on us. Out now on No Front Teeth and Feral Kid Records, Concentric Grave is the work of two titans of our community: Rob Brake from Mononegatives, Isolation Party, etc. and No Front Teeth head honcho Marco Palumbo-Rodrigues (I'll refrain from mentioning all his bands since you don't have all day to read this review). The album was written and recorded back in the dreadful summer of 2020. Brake created the music in Canada. Across the pond, Palumbo-Rodrigues added the vocals. I almost can't believe this album was produced in such a manner. It sounds like the work of a single (and very brilliant) brain. All I can say is that these two men's artistic visions are remarkably in synch. So either these guys were separated at birth or they had the means to communicate telepathically across an ocean.

Telegenic Pleasure's first release was that rare synth-punk album that I could honestly describe as enjoyable. But with Concentric Grave, this duo has truly blown me away. I've always thought of Rob Brake as a mad genius composer with a synthesizer. Now imagine what a guy like that could come up with while haunted by the specter of unprecedented social isolation, the world in disarray, and death literally floating in the air. His compositions have never been more dynamic and enthralling, and surely the voices in his head sounded a lot like Terminal Gagger. Concentric Grave is full of songs inspired by anxiety and despair, yet it manages to be tremendous fun and musically alive. These intercontinental Londoners make music reminiscent of some obvious godheads (Devo, Screamers, Gary Numan), but there's plenty of their own unique brilliance flowing through these 12 songs. Far more than just part of the atmosphere, Brake's synthesizers drive these songs. Palumbo-Rodrigues' lyrics and vocals are some of the strongest of his career — and that's really saying something. Ranging from frenzied and frantic ("Shallow Human Characteristics," "Greed for Guilt") to chilling and foreboding ("Imaginary Crimes") to angular and energetic ("Random Sequence"), these songs are as hook-laden as they are haunting. There's a truly impressive pop sensibility lying beneath the surface of these songs. "Sugar Effigy" is what I wish all synth-punk could be  — a total adrenaline rush with synths that sound like laser guns. "Hidden Moon" is the best song Joy Division never wrote. "I Wanna Know" gives the Demics classic a nifty postmodern makeover. "Underlying Problem" is Devo-core that puts all other Devo-core to shame. "Polarized" is the ultimate anthem for our times.

If I'm often lukewarm on the synth/post-punk thing, it's because music of that sort frequently strikes me as dull or lacking in emotion. Concentric Grave is the very opposite of dull and lacking in emotion. It's the sound of two souls kicking and screaming their way out of the darkness. And we are now far enough removed from peak pandemic times to be able to enjoy an album of this nature without it hitting too close to home. There have been quite a few extraordinary albums released in 2023 already, but this sophomore release from Telegenic Pleasure is on a collision course with my year-end top ten.

Bart and the Brats - self titled

Following a 10", a 7", and a split 7" with Take the City, France's Bart and the Brats have unleashed their proper debut LP via two of the greatest punk record labels ever: No Front Teeth and Big Neck Records. And as expected, it's a smashing slab of wax! Bart and the Brats are the solo project of the prolific punk musician Bart De Vraantijk (Pneumonias, Wild Zeros, Teenage Hearts, The Janitors, etc.). With this project, Bart hones in on the classic '77 punk sound — taking equal inspiration from both sides of the Atlantic. If you dig The Kids, Zeros, the first two Ramones albums, and the tougher/snottier side of early U.K. punk, then Bart and the Brats will be right up your alley. You know I'm always a sucker for the classic '77 sound, and Bart really hits the sweet spot on these 12 ripping tracks. He knows how to write a rockin' punk tune that will get your head bobbing and your toes tapping. There's no fooling around here: every song gets the job done in two minutes or thereabouts, and then it's on to the next one. With this being a Bart De Vraantijk project, you know you're getting a little of that garage/budget rawness in the production and performance. But stylistically, this album is all about the sound of '77. Bart is a master at writing catchy tunes that are chock full of attitude, and he has delivered the goods on this self-titled release. If ever an album existed that needed to be co-released by Big Neck and No Front Teeth, this is the one!

Tenement Rats - Sods Law

Following three killer singles released 2016-18, Los Angeles punk trio Tenement Rats finally release their debut LP. And it's a doozy! Out now on No Front Teeth Records, Sods Law features ten tracks of snotty '77 punk rock that take inspiration from both sides of the Atlantic. This is what you'd call a vintage No Front Teeth release: a non-stop barrage of three-chord punk bangers full of attitude and aggression. No track surpasses two-and-half minutes, and song titles like "Decease and Exist," "Exterminator," and "Nerve Gas Love" give you a great idea of what to expect. This is old school punk rock in its rawest and most exciting form. As always, the lineup features Jonny Watkins on guitar & vocals and Shaun Clark on drums. Tsubasa Muratani from Rough Kids plays bass. Together these guys tear into these tunes with power and ferocity. If you have a soft spot for the more pummeling side of '77 punk rock, you need these filthy rodents in your life!

Mala Vista - Ruthless & Toothless

Let's kick off meteorological summer with some scorching hot '77-style punk rock and roll! Ruthless & Toothless is the debut LP from New York City's Mala Vista -- a band that made a promising debut in 2019 and has since proceeded to take things to another level. Ruthless & Toothless, which will be released on vinyl by No Front Teeth Records later this summer, features seven new songs (recorded last year) along with six tracks from the band's debut EP. While that first EP was really good, these new songs are even better. They're more melodic & better-produced, yet they rip just as hard. Put together, these 13 tracks make for a crackling debut album. At a time when so few newer bands are playing this traditional style of punk music, it's exciting to hear a band like Mala Vista totally nail it! If you took the best elements of The Clash, Dead Boys, Heartbreakers, and Ramones and updated them for modern times, it would sound an awful lot like this. It's always a joy to hear music with this kind of heart, passion, and grit -- and great hooks to boot! There's nothing better than punk rock permeating the summer air, so crank these tunes loud and enjoy. Keep checking No Front Teeth's monthly updates for news on the vinyl release!

Da Groins - 100% Groin

Now here's something right up my alley! U.K. trio Da Groins play pissed-off punk rock in the classic style. With a band name like Da Groins, you would expect some kick-you-in-the-balls music. And that's exactly what you get with the new EP 100% Groin. Think old school British street punk if it were produced by Billy Childish. The gag uniting these four songs is that there's just one letter separating the words "public" and "pubic". I've been waiting for a band to capitalize on this quirk of the English language since I was 12. Da Groins are that band, but they are no joke. On this brilliant debut, they dish out raw, hard-hitting tunes that are chock full of fury and profanity. What more could you possibly need in life? This, my friends, is punk fucking rock in all its glory. 100% Groin is available now on vinyl from Amok, No Front Teeth, Kibou, and Serial Bowl Records!

Klazo - 'Demik Dementia

Holy smokes, do we ever have a ripper here! Brace yourself! London, Ontario duo Klazo plays fast & ferocious punk rock that meets at the intersection of early hardcore, post Reatards garage-punk, and old school Rust Belt punk rock. A co-release between Big Neck and No Front Teeth Records, its new album 'Demik Dementia is a goddamn classic upon arrival. This is truly a vintage Big Neck Records release! The one-sheet summarizes it as "blaster tracks with compulsive yelling amplified by fire, alcohol and carbon monoxide poisoning," and it would be futile for me to try and come up with a better description. How can just two people kick up a racket this enormous? On this release, Rob and Jesse tear through 11 tracks that smash everything in their path. And while the sheer force and manic energy of the music are undeniable, what separates Klazo from so many other bands of this style is that they've got songs. And I love how the band complements all the killer original material with unbelievably awesome covers of a couple of classics: PACK's "Nobody Can Tell Us" and Electric Eels' "Jaguar Ride". Those cover selections give you excellent reference points for what Klazo is all about, and the band totally crushes both songs.

'Demik Dementia is reminiscent of a whole lot of great records that came out in the early-to-mid aughts. But as the title suggests, it's fully imbued with the anxiety, despair, and rage of this unprecedented moment in our existence. If you love garage trash, Killed By Death comps, or just great punk rock in general, you need to be all over this release!

Pogy et les Kéfars - Dans Ton Rétro

Dans Ton Rétro is the debut full-length album from Pogy et les Kéfars -- a delightful power pop/punk band based in Marseille, France. A co-release between Crapoulet, Bitume Rugueux, and No Front Teeth Records, this 9-track long player is so tuneful and infectious that it transcends the language barrier. The lyrics are in French, so I have no idea what the band is singing about. But ultimately, that just doesn't matter! Dans Ton Rétro is just a super fun album. It's got energy, hooks, and a spirit that brings to mind the late '70s/early '80s heyday of punk rock, new wave, and power pop. At a lean nine tracks, this album is filler-free and chock full of hits. If you're a regular reader of this blog, Pogy et les Kéfars are definitely a band for you!

Dead Meat (II)

Last year I went absolutely wild over the debut EP from London punk supergroup Dead Meat. This band hits that sweet spot where the tougher side of '70s punk rock meets the roots of hardcore. The good news is that Dead Meat is back with a second EP on No Front Teeth Records -- again recorded by Ben Perrier. The bad news is that this is the final release from Dead Meat. As you can imagine, band rehearsals are challenging to arrange with members living in different countries and some even residing on different continents! But given the Killed By Death vibe of Dead Meat's recordings, it seems rather appropriate that their final output will be measured by just two EPs. Dead Meat's second EP is very much like the first one. It includes four ripping tracks which all run well under two minutes. The tunes are raw and mean but also catchy as hell. If you like punk tunes that make you wanna bob your head even as they punch you in the mouth, this is definitely the record for you! While this will be the final release from Dead Meat, Adrian and Fisher are working on a new band in a similar vein. And Vince and Jake will continue to assault the world's collective eardrums with the mighty Kool and the Gang Bangers and The Cavemen. Standard copies of Dead Meat II will be spray-painted on a leather sleeve by Marco NFT himself. That means that no two copies will be alike -- record collectors are gonna go crazy! Supplies are limited, so get your orders in!

The Wheelz - Twenty/Twenty

Tulsa, Oklahoma based trio The Wheelz have returned with four more tracks of absolutely perfect sing-along punk rock! In December 2018, the band released its debut album Top 10 Super Hits! - which yielded the instant classic track "Throwaway". Out on Boulevard Trash & No Front Teeth Records, new 7" Twenty/Twenty is a worthy follow-up to the immensely enjoyable Top 10 Super Hits! This latest release again finds The Wheelz drawing from the influences of snotty '77 punk rock and old school anthemic street punk. Yet it's far from a replay of the last record. I wonder if I can say this without ruining the band's reputation, but Twenty/Twenty feels less obnoxious and far more "serious" compared to Top 10 Super Hits! Don't get me wrong: these songs still have that same snotty edge to them. But this time through, The Wheelz are in less of a jokey mood and more, uh, pissed off! While Twenty/Twenty is not necessarily about the events of last year, it does tap into the anger and frustration of the moment. Lead track "Politicians" is that rare modern political song that's fully nonpartisan. It rails at elected officials of all stripes who have failed the people they've been entrusted to serve. The equally anthemic "Washed Anyway" rages against corporate interests that systematically suck the souls out of American cities. "Generation Turncoat" calls out those who have abandoned their ideals and fallen into complacency. "Two Little Boys" is a very fine cover of the early 20th Century war anthem. All in all, Twenty/Twenty is a splendid example of what a pure punk rock record ought to be. It sounds like it could have come out on TKO Records in 1998! All of these songs are urgent and powerful, but also full of strong melodies and memorable choruses. This is a classic sound executed superbly. Vinyl copies are going fast, so get on it!

Cold Callers - Dressed To Die

Out now on No Front Teeth Records and Boulevard Trash, the second album by London's Cold Callers splendidly walks that fine line between '70s U.K. punk and new wave. On lead vocals is No Front Teeth head honcho Marco (The Gaggers, Miscalculations, Telegenic Pleasure, The Flesh of the City, La Rabbia, Sanguisuga, Disco Lepers, Botox Rats). The Internet doesn't reveal much about who else is in the band, but I will say that whoever is on lead guitar is absolutely fantastic. As Mick Fletcher has astutely pointed out, Cold Callers sound an awful lot like Marco's other bands. So if you saw the "power pop" description and were expecting something along the lines of The Records or Kidda Band, you'd be barking up the wrong tree! Cold Callers are more like the middle ground between The Gaggers and Miscalculations, with the addition of pop and post-punk influences.

Several years have passed since Cold Callers released their debut album Covering Lies. And you can hear the difference in Dressed To Die, which sounds like the work of a band that has found its sound and fully realized it. In terms of production and musical sophistication, Dressed To Die totally blows its predecessor away. From track to track, the musical focus varies from jerky punk ("Numb Thoughts") to dark synth-pop ("The Runaway Returns") to 1980s British post-punk/pop ("Dressed To Die" ) to up-tempo jangly pop ("Trapped Between Pages") to old school sing-along punk not far removed from The Gaggers ("Remember My Name"). It's as if Marco took everything that was good about all of his bands and combined it all into one awesomely cohesive entity. This is a pop record, a punk record, and a new wave record all at the same time. As expected, the lyrics lean in the obsessive/creepy/disturbing direction. Yet the hooks are hard to resist. You may ultimately feel bad about merrily singing along to a song as diabolical as "From The Rooftops". But isn't that half the fun? I will always endorse a Marco-fronted band, and Dressed To Die is the strongest record he's made in quite a while. The album is available in three different versions, so get cracking while the alternate covers are still available!

The Stiffies - Rub It In

For my final record review of the decade, I have the pleasure of writing about an album that really takes me back to my roots in punk music. I've often said that 1995 was my 1977, and I will forever be attached to the later '90s incarnation of '77 punk rock. Straight out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Stiffies play snotty '77 meets West Coast punk that would have been right at home on record labels like TKO, Pelado, and Radio Records circa the late '90s/early 2000s. Rub It In is the band's debut album, and it's out now on No Front Teeth Records. NFT is one of my go-to labels for '77 punk and one of my favorite labels, period. If it's on NFT, you know it rules! I love this sort of pure old school punk, and I'm a bit nostalgic for a time when I could review two or three bands like this every month. But nostalgia be damned - I like stuff like this because it's a timeless sound! I could throw a song like "My Baby Ain't Fun" or "I Don't Wanna Be Your Friend" on a mixed tape with everyone from The Stitches to The Trust Fund Babies to The Randumbs, and it would all fit together perfectly. I can definitely sense a kindred spirit relationship (and perhaps some overlapping membership?) with another Tulsa band The Wheelz. The Stiffies' sound has a little bit more of a punk rock and roll edge to it, but there's that some snotty attitude and penchant for catchy, sing-along tunes. Rub It In was made to be played at obnoxiously loud volumes while you guzzle beer with one hand and flip somebody off with the other. If you like old school punk by way of '90s California, this album will make you damn glad that bands like this still exist. As always, you'll want to hit up No Front Teeth Records for info on the alternate versions of the LP - which will be long gone if you snooze too long!

The Flesh Of The City - self titled

Strangely, yet another killer band from the Gaggers/Shanghai Wires/Miscalculations/Disco Lepers family tree has arrived with seemingly zero press. I figured that ought to change! With Marco Palumbo's lead vocals so immediately recognizable, you probably have a pretty good idea of what to expect from The Flesh Of The City. The band name alone makes it quite apparent that you're not in for any easy listening! In the most satisfying way, The Flesh Of The City manages to be the perfect combination of all of the bands referenced above. On this full-length debut, Marco and company deliver eight tracks of menacing punk rock blending snotty vocals, sharp guitars, and bleak visions of a world in despair. Songs like "Visceral Jolt" and "Inside You" lean a little closer to The Gaggers, while "Patron Saint" and "Other Peoples Ideas" would sound perfectly in place on a Miscalculations release. "Flesh of the City", the album's masterful centerpiece, is the best of all of Marco's projects condensed into a single song. I appreciate that the identity of this band is less about a particular musical style and more about the exploration of Marco's dark worldview. A brilliant artist in many regards, he crafts these depictions of life that are disturbing yet incredibly compelling. And the instant he opens his mouth to sing, he's got you hooked. If you long for a time when the lines between punk, post-punk, and new wave were virtually non-existent, this may be the album for you. Get it from No Front Teeth Records in the UK and Dirtyflair Record Company in Australia!

Please Stop! - Built To Die

How about a full-length album on a 7"? Is such a thing even possible? If I had any doubts, Please Stop! has erased them entirely. 11 songs clocking in at just a tick under 13 minutes is absolutely an album in my book. So let it be said that Built To Die is the debut full-length from this Midwestern punk powerhouse. It follows last year's superb EP Power Suit and Dead Bodies, and it's out on No Front Teeth Records. Call it hardcore punk, call it snotty punk, call it whatever you like. This is some of the fiercest, smartest, and most ripping punk music you could ever hope to hear. And while no punk group is better at hitting you in the mouth with its music, Please Stop! is first and foremost a band with something to say. The lyrics on this release are remarkable. They're provocative, often unsettling, and open enough to interpretation to really make you think. A lot of these songs can be seen as social commentary - but not in a way that's obvious or heavy-handed. Staysee, as always, is a force of nature on the mic. Her vocals are the perfect combination of pissed-off, crazed, and just straight-up bad-ass. And her bandmates match her power and fury at every turn. Songs like the title track and "Faults" deliver a jolt like only the best hardcore punk can. "Born Again" and "Kill That Thing" slow the pace just a little but are equally bruising and doubly menacing. Man, Danimal sure knows how to get a raging sound on his guitar!

If you're looking to hear what's great in punk music in 2018, Please Stop! is one of the first bands you need to check out. Power Suit and Dead Bodies was a formidable debut, and Built To Die is even better. I'm amazed at how this band can pack so much substance into songs that rarely run much longer than a minute. Each of these 11 tracks hits you quick but definitely leaves an impression. Punk rock with power, intelligence, and a relentless fighting spirit is something we will always need more of. Built To Die is available in two versions from No Front Teeth: a standard edition and a limited edition with a translucent sleeve. Get on it!

The Jackhammers - Your Problem Now

How about some PUNK ROCK today?! The Jackhammers hail from Glasgow, and their long list of band interests includes such things as belligerence, wanton destruction, auto-erotic asphyxiation, and public executions of bankers. Clearly this is not a group of sensitive singer/songwriters! Considering that these guys have cool names like Jim Shit, Andy Drankit, and Horace Cockpuppet, they certainly give themselves a lot to live up to. Well no problem, because their music rips! Your Problem Now is the band's latest 7", out now on the eternally dependable No Front Teeth Records. If you like raging old school punk rock with a nasty streak, the only thing that really needs to be said is that you need this record. What a crackler! Should you require any further hints about where these fellas are coming from, consider that they cover "Not Now No Way" by the almighty PAGANS and absolutely crush it! Get your mitts on this record, blast it obnoxiously loud, and piss off the neighbors. What else could you possibly need in life?!

Please Stop! - Power Suit and Dead Bodies

With a debut 7" out on the ever-dependable No Front Teeth Records, Minnesota's Please Stop! ought to be on the radar of anyone on the lookout for some in-your-face punk rock. Veterans of the modern-day Midwest punk scene, lead singer StaySee and guitarist Danimal have formed Please Stop! with  bassist Cheetah and drummer Reckless Jane Danger. Power Suit and Dead Bodies jams eight songs onto one little slab of vinyl - delivering the literal bang for your buck that we've come to expect from the best hardcore punk 7"s. As the title suggests, these songs tackle some pretty dark subject matter. StaySee, a first-class punk screamer, has a knack for bringing out everything that's troubling, uncomfortable, or straight-up bleak about these lyrics. Behind her the band lays down a properly punishing attack. Danimal's guitar sounds super raw and totally punches you in the face. And that rhythm section can thump with the best of 'em. All-out rippers like "Let's Hear It" and "Paint Them Up" hit hard and fast, annihilating all that's in their path. But on the "longer" (meaning somewhere north of a minute and a half!) tracks, the band shows a range beyond light speed hardcore. Whether it's the thunderous sludge of "Sweetie", the dark surf tones of "High Horse", or the barely restrained menace of "Bites", there's plenty here to demonstrate that Please Stop! are far more than a one-trick-pony. "Bites", as a matter of fact, is the one track that I keep going back to. It's one of those songs that just grabs you by the throat. "You should come with a warning," hollers StaySee. "'I bite, I bite, I bite.' You should know this about me - I bite, I bite back!" Never has a vocal sounded more believable!

Both vinyl and digital editions of Power Suit and Dead Bodies are available for purchase at Please Stop!'s Bandcamp. Those who support the group on Bandcamp will receive three bonus tracks as well. One of those is "I've Never Seen That", a delightfully thrashing number inspired by one of the great cinematic masterpieces of all-time: The 'Burbs. I highly recommend going all-in and getting your figurative mitts on the bonus tracks. No one has a better ear for what's good in punk music than Marco at No Front Teeth. This debut from Please Stop! keeps the NFT hot streak very much in tact!

Thee Evil Twin - self titled 7"

How about some real deal punk rock n' roll?! Thee Evil Twin is the latest band from Adam Caine of Radio Reelers fame. Now wreaking havoc in Sydney, Australia, Adam is back in the saddle and heading up this red-hot trio. The band's second 7" is out on No Front Teeth Records and fully reignites the rip-roaring garage/punk/rock n' roll action of the Radio Reelers, Trust Fund Babies, The Shrinks, etc. "MFers All" is every bit the sing-along anthem you'd expect based on the title, and "Howlin'" is a jolt of energy strong enough to keep you wired for hours. To bring it all home, "Don't Wanna See Your Band" is the snotty garage punk smash you've been craving. Without spoiling it for you, I'll just say that most of you will really relate to this one!

With this new EP from Thee Evil Twin, you get exactly what you'd expect from an Adam Caine fronted band: three rockin' tunes that hit you quick and leave you wanting more. This is right up there with the best releases from any of Caine's previous bands. It really takes me back to the late '90s/early 2000s glory days of Bay Area garage punk. Digital tracks are available from the band directly, and No Front Teeth has two versions of the vinyl for sale. Grab a copy while you still can!

New single from Devious Ones!

Detroit's Devious Ones have been one of my favorite current-day bands since the very first time I heard them. I can't believe that was already two years ago! One of the things I love about these guys is that they prove that it's possible to take influence from '70s punk and power pop yet still create music that sounds new and fresh and original. Consider the band's brand-new single "Djarum Summers". I can listen to the A-side and honestly say that there's no other band out there that sounds exactly like this. Sure, it's old school catchy punk - which I love. But it's immediately identifiable as a Devious Ones song and not just some rewrite of a classic hit. That guitar tone is bad-ass, and there's something about the way Eric sings the chorus that really makes this song stick in my head. Best D.O. song yet? It's at least in the conversation! On the flip, "Court Clothes" is a perfect example of what this band does so well. It's basically fast poppy punk, but with some unusual/creative touches in the vocals and lyrics that really set it apart. If you're a fan of what a band like Maniac has been doing in recent years, you should dig Devious Ones as well.

A co-release between Rust on the Blade and No Front Teeth Records, "Djarum Summers" is Devious Ones' first international release. Downloads are now available via digital outlets, and vinyl is coming soon! Locals can pick up the single at the band's record release party at Kelly's Bar Hamtramck on March 11. Original '77 punks Cinecyde will be on the bill!

Introducing Rinehearts!

I've got a short and sweet post for you today! Rinehearts hail from Perth, Australia and have a six-song debut EP out on No Front Teeth Records. This is something a little different for NFT: late '70s style power pop that worships at the altar of guitar jangle and ringing melodies. It goes without saying that I'm a big fan of the style, and Rinehearts sure do it well. Play "Try Your Luck" for just about anyone, and you could totally pass it off as some forgotten A-side from the heyday of The Records and Incredible Kidda Band! I feel like I should be playing this EP while I stand in front of the mirror and fix my skinny tie just right. There's quite a rich history of Aussie power pop, and Rinehearts seem poised to become part of it. Order the 7" from No Front Teeth!
