Here is the Goodreads synopsis
Romeo and Juliet meets Children of the Corn in this one-of-a-kind romantic horror.

“When you fall in love, you will carve out your heart and throw it into the deepest ocean. You will be all in—blood and salt.”

These are the last words Ash Larkin hears before her mother returns to the spiritual commune she escaped long ago. But when Ash follows her to Quivira, Kansas, something sinister and ancient waits among the rustling cornstalks of this village lost to time.

Ash is plagued by memories of her ancestor, Katia, which harken back to the town’s history of unrequited love and murder, alchemy and immortality. Charming traditions soon give way to a string of gruesome deaths, and Ash feels drawn to Dane, a forbidden boy with secrets of his own.

As the community prepares for a ceremony five hundred years in the making, Ash must fight not only to save her mother, but herself—and discover the truth about Quivira before it’s too late. Before she’s all in—blood and salt.
Blood and Salt is a delicious blend of genres. You have horror, paranormal, romance, and a rich mythology that runs through every aspect of the entire novel. It's a gripping, intense début that manages to balance everything within the plot, and even throw in a little humour at the same time.

This novel does scary and sexy with a subtle precision. It's unsettling in it's scary moments, and the chemistry between Ash and Dane is palpable. It's all understated though. It gives you just enough to leave you wanting more with both the scares and romance. Novels like this work especially well for me, because I have always been a less is more sort of girl. The illusion of scariness can be scarier than full out gore. The subtly sexy can be more of a turn on than any gratuitous display in the right hands, and Kim Liggett nails both.

It's the mythology that truly shines in this story above anything else. This novel feels like a return to those paranormal romances that I loved so much, but also happens to be truly unique. It's different from anything I've ever read before, while feeling recognizable at the same time. A well thought out back story to the mythology, and the limits and constraints it may have, are key to a novel like this. It's the centrepiece of the entire story, and the time Kim Liggett spent creating it certainly shows in the rich, vibrant details of the Quivira community and their rituals.

The relationships in this novel are interesting, but it's the brother/sister dynamic between Rhys and Ash that stood out for me. There is something nuanced, and realistic about their bond that stayed with me. They balance each other incredibly well, and highlight the best and worst in each other. Their bond plays a larger role in the story than I anticipated and it was a pleasant surprise to discover. This relationship also has plenty of potential to be a vital focus in the sequel and is filled with plenty of surprises during this part of their story.

The setting of Quivira itself really feels like a character in the story. It feels like the community is a place lost in time so the result is a story that feels both timeless, and current. The setting creates it's unsettling atmosphere with it's isolated remoteness and vast (and possible sinister) corn fields. Kim spins a fantastic setting for her characters to inhabit and without it the story would not function the same way.

The ending of this novel is the kind of ending that rips your heart out, even as it piques your interest. A brutally stunning set up for the sequel, while still feeling like a complete ending to this chapter of Ash's story. This book feels like it could stand on it's own, but it would be torturous to be left with such incredibly possibilities on the horizon.  It's the type of mythology that could allow for multiple directions for the story to go in, and that leaves the sequel a tantalizing question mark.

A well plotted, wonderfully paced read that offers up some truly unique mythology. Those who like their scares with plenty of romance thrown in will devour this one and immediately demand the sequel. Kim Leggitt's Blood and Salt is perfectly timed to be a hit this Oct as it pairs wonderfully with the crisp nights of autumn. Just don't read it by a corn field.

Kim Liggett's 5 Sexiest and 5 Scariest Scenes

Blood and Salt comes out this week, and it's seriously sexy (and also seriously unsettling). Kim's called it a horromance which is pretty accurate. What better way to celebrate that than having author Kim Liggett share her top five sexiest (and her top five scariest) scenes from pop culture for a super fun top ten list?!

Before we get to the scary and sexy goodness, here is a little about Blood and Salt (goodreads)
First up are her top five sexiest scenes (because those are always more fun).

SEXIEST:

1) Outlander

I've read all the books. It's difficult to choose just one moment, but when Jamie's guarding Claire's door at the inn-- that's pretty charged.

2) True Blood

I loved the books. I loved the show. This entire series is like sex on a stick (Lafayette reference).
My favorite moments are between Sookie and Bill in season one. When he comes into Merlott's and everyone's staring at the two of them. He says her name--- "Sookie". Goosebumps.

3) Penny Dreadful

I'm so in love with this show. Dorian Gray in season one-- oh my lord. His scenes crackle. One of my favorites is when he first meets Vanessa Ives. The electricity is palpable.

4) Atonement

The library scene in Ian McEwan's book is flawless.

5) The Vampire Diaries

That scene when Damon and Elena kiss outside the no-tell motel. Ridiculously hot.

Agree with so many of these sexy scenes (particularly anything with Jamie and Claire!)

Now for the the horror part of Kim's top ten list....

SCARIEST:

1) Rosemary's Baby

That bedroom scene is terrifying. It has that hallucinogenic quality that really gets under my skin. Is it real-- is it a dream? It's disturbing in the best/worst way.

2) Misery

I adored the book and the movie. Kathy Bates killed it. So chilling.

3) The Lottery finale

A week doesn't go by that I don't think about this Shirley Jackson story.

4) The Others

The soundtrack alone will give you nightmares. This scene with the veil--spine-tingling.

5) The Exorcist

This is the one movie I can't watch alone.

Definitely some great choices! Some of these movies would be perfect to watch for Halloween!

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOK

Blood and Salt Book Trailer (goodreads)

This book trailer is highly effective. It showcases the sexiness of Kim's debut novel, and offers up a few surprises. Be sure to watch until the very end....

Insane, right? Doesn't it make you absolutely curious about this novel? Be sure to put this one on your radar because it's amazing.

This Monstrous Thing Book Trailer (goodreads)

Another book trailer that does exactly what it is supposed to and teases you just enough to make you NEED to read the novel. This one is for the Frankenstein inspired novel coming from Mackenzi Lee and it's perfect.

It captures the tone and feel of the original while offering up a taste of what makes this interpretation unique. I often don't love book trailers, but this one (and the other included here) are a very pleasant surprise.

TV/MOVIE

Wicked City Key Art

I am super excited to check out this show when it airs in Oct. I have high hopes and while I've heard mixed things I am still hopefully that I'll love this anthology style show. These posters are certainly eye catching and fit the premise of the show. I've always been of a fan of the striking red/black colour scheme so this REALLY works for me.

American Horror Story: Hotel First Look

Entertainment Weekly just revealed the first look at some of the characters from this season of American Horror Story and I am in love. The is a definite 80's vibe to the wardrobe and look of the characters. I am intrigued by the 'pseudo vampires' being included in this season, and I enjoy so much of the cast.

Finn Wittrock, my favourite part of AHS: Freakshow returns and I am all about this look. Totally hot and fits into the 80's feel of the rest of the cast photos. For more, check out the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly! Cannot wait to pick up my copy.

OTHER

ALA 2016

With BEA moving to Chicago for the year, I am going to be attending ALA instead (I may attend both but that is not for sure). I just recently purchased my flight ticket to Orlando and am insanely excited. I've never been to ALA but I hear it's similar to BEA and I do look forward to seeing all the amazing bloggers, authors, and publishing professionals.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

BOOK

Cover of Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard (goodreads)

So Kneel Or Bleed is my new favourite. Such an AMAZING tagline. The mixture of red and silver blood is also a delightful touch. I love that the covers in the series are similar so that my collection matches. They first and second books are going to look amazing together on bookshelves.

Dumplin' pre-order campaign (goodreads)

I have it on good authority that Dumplin' is amazing. It's one you're going to want to read. 100%. So maybe take advantage of this amazing pre-order campaign since you'll be getting a copy anyway.

If you live in the USA (or have a USA address you can use) simply follow the instructions found on Julie Murphy's Tumblr after pre-ordering your copy of Dumplin' and she'll send you one of these shiny, adorable pins!

Photo from Julie Murphy's Tumblr

Cute right? The above photo is found on Julie's Tumblr to advertise the pre-order campaign kick off!

Blood and Salt pre-order campaign (goodreads)

If romance and horror are more your thing.... check out this amazing chance to see how a novel changes from draft to final in this pre-order being offered by Kim Liggett.

This requires a purchase from a particular store (McNally Jackson) but the 50 page look at the publishing process is more than a little tempting.

Cover for Suffer Love by Ashley Herring Blake (goodreads)

I love this colour scheme. I also like the current trend of not showing people's faces on covers. This one has a dreamy, almost romantic quality to it, but there is more than a hint of darkness here too. It's an eye catching cover for what I've heard is a fantastic read.

TV/MOVIE

Peaky Blinders

I pretty much adore Cillian Murphy and think he's a phenomenal actor.Peaky Blinders has a very Boardwalk Empire like feel to it, and I am already hooked after 2 episodes.

New To My Book Closet

It's that time of the week again. Time to show you what bookish goodies made their way into my home and book closet (to be saved from the evil book eating cat monster named Aria). This is inspired by the various "mailbox" posts out there (eg. In My Mailbox by The Story Siren, and Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews).

My mailbox was AMAZING this week. Amazing beyond words. We're talking freak out at the mailbox levels of awesome.

First up I received a copy of this lovely! It made me squeal at the mailbox because I've been looking forward to this since it was first announced.

Blood and Salt by Kim Liggett (goodreads)

This cover is even more stunning in person. I love the black ribbon inside it too. A huge thank you to Kim Liggett for the chance to read this.

The second was a huge package that honestly brightened my day.

First in the package was this very exciting book! As you can see I've already read it and loved it. Review will be posted release week along with other surprises.

Anne and Henry by Dawn Ius (goodreads)

The package also included this amazing assortment of swag!

These bookmarks are amazing! The crown swag is also pretty amazing. I love the note card and note book!

Lastly, the package also included something that reflected my love of wine (Dawn also loves it, and we've bonded over our shared love).

These are cute little wine charms! The initials A and H and a little crown. I love them! A huge thank you to Dawn Ius for this! I loved all of it.

What books made their way into your mailbox this week?

Happy Weekend and Happy Reading!

Waiting On Wednesday ....... Blood and Salt

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is Blood and Salt by Kim Liggett

Here is the Goodreads synopsis
“When you fall in love, you will carve out your heart and throw it into the deepest ocean. You will be all in - blood and salt.”

Before she’s all in = blood and salt.
I was sold the second I read that this book was being pitched as Children of the Corn meets Romeo and Juliet. It promises to be sexy, dark, romantic, and brutal and I am so looking forward to reading this. I was very lucky and already have an ARC of this, but the wait until I can sneak it into my reading pile will be torture.

Extremely small Weekly Obsessions post this week.

BOOKS

Me Before You and the sequel by Jojo Moyes (Goodreads)

I recently read Me Before You. I am pretty sure I am one of the last people on the planet to read it as I recall it being everywhere when it was first released. I LOVED this book. Completely obsessed. I was both apprehensive and delighted to hear that a sequel would be released this September. The first one was so perfect and I am afraid for the sequel to mess with how I feel about that book, but I am equally looking forward to returning to these characters. If you haven't read Me Before You, get on it immediately.

Cover of Truly Madly Famously by Rebecca Serle (Goodreads)

You  might have heard me talk about Famous In Love, just a little bit. It was one of my favourites of last year. I have been anticipating the sequel since I finished reading it last May. The cover was just revealed and I LOVE IT! It's a little different from the first one, BUT fits with the series. Rebecca has said this is the book she wanted to write, and that makes me even more excited to read this.

Cover of Blood and Salt by Kim Liggett (Goodreads)

Creepy right? It's also a little romantic with the old fashioned dress. Those two elements together seem to fit this novel's synopsis perfectly. A blend of death and love. The tagline immediately caught my attention and it's made me even more excited about this book.

MOVIE/TV

Me Before You movie adaptation

As noted above I loved the Me Before You novel. So much. I found out that Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin have been cast as Lou and Will in the movie adaptation. It is set to start filming in April and has an anticipated release of 2016. I am happy with the casting and I cannot wait to see what these two do with these roles. They are both favourites of mine and I anticipate some pretty electric chemistry. Expect much flailing and posting of set images/trailers/movie posters/etc as they come available.

How To Get Away With Murder

I've been obsessed with How To Get Away With Murder this season. They just had their season finale on Thursday and IT WAS PERFECTION! It was the best way for this show to end it's stellar first season and has me NEEDING to see season two. If you missed getting obsessed with this show be sure to catch up during the summer.

2015 Most Anticipated ...... Blood and Salt

The next selection for my 2015 Most Anticipated Event is one that's been on my radar for quite a long while. Blood and Salt has been called Romeo and Juliet meets Children of the Corn and I basically want to read this immediately.

Read this Goodreads synopsis and you'll be rushing to add this to your own 'to be read' list. It sounds dark, sexy, romantic, and (did I already mention) DARK.

Kim was kind enough to answer some questions about the book, design some ice cream, and explain why she thinks Romeo and Juliet and Children of the Corn pair well together.

1 Describe Blood and Salt in Twitter format (140 characters or less)

Romeo and Juliet meets Children of the Corn.

2 If someone were to make an ice cream flavour for your book, what might be included?

I'll let the title speak for itself. But for decency sake, let's say-- red velvet cake and sea salt.

3 Can you share a secret about your book (either it's world, it's characters, or something that helped inspire the story)?

The setting is loosely based on the place I grew up in rural Kansas (Quivira). I couldn't wait to get out of there, but it's in my blood--my soul. It's possible to hate something and love it all at once. That's the main theme of Blood and Salt-- the destructive force of love--on every level.

4 "Romeo and Juliet meets Children of the Corn" is an unusual pairing. What prompted you to mix those two together?

I love horror and romance, especially together. I find in all great horror there's an element of seduction and in all great romance there's a whiff of death.

5 If you could travel to anywhere, in any time period, when and where would you want travel?

I'd like to wander the plains of the midwest in the summer of 1541--just like Coronado when he traveled to Quivira,Kansas. The prairie grass was so high and vast, people got lost in it-- lost their minds. I probably would've died in the first twenty minutes-- my eyesight is godawful-- I would've walked right up to a herd of buffalo thinking they were cute little doggies. But it would've been thrilling-- the sound of the wind moving through the crops--the scent of wild honeysuckle and fertile earth--not knowing what was around every corner.

6 What three things do you need while revising?

1) Vats of iced green tea. 2) A restroom-- see answer #1 (lady bladder) 3) Advil.
I can easily lose an entire day revising. That never happens to me when I'm drafting.

7 If possible, please share the first line of Blood and Salt. (only answer if not too spoilery).

The dead girl hung upside down over our kitchen table.

I want to thank Kim for taking the time to answer these questions. It's made me even more excited to read this book! The opening line already sets a particular tone and I cannot wait!

Blood and Salt is released Fall 2015 and no pre-order links are available yet but you can add it to your Goodreads account in the meantime.

Be sure to check back later on during the event for a chance to win Blood and Salt (or any one of my featured titles!).

You can follow Kim Liggett on Twitter, visit her official website, and learn more about the book from the publisher website.

Do you scary stories? What about ones that mix in a little romance? Let me know in the comments.

Weekly Obsessions

The awesome Kelly at KellyVision started posting a weekly post highlighting whatever she happened to be obsessed with that week. I LOVE this idea, so much in fact that I will be doing it myself every Saturday.

Here are my obsessions this week:

BOOKS

The Bane Chronicles: What Really Happened in Peru cover

Those of you who know me are probably well aware that I love Cassandra Clare's two series. I especially love a certain warlock. I was ecstatic when I heard that she was going to be releasing some e-novellas staring Magnus, and that they would be released in 'hard copy' format once all the e-novellas have been released. The cover of the first one has been released and I LOVE IT!

Blood and Salt by Kim Liggett

Read the Goodreads synopsis of this novel and tell me you don't want to read it. Romeo and Juliet meets Children of the Corn?! It is officially one of my 'must reads' of 2014. I am looking forward to more information coming out about this one soon.

MOVIE

City of Bones Trailer # 2

There is so much I could say about this trailer. Robert Sheehan is PERFECT as Simon. This trailer shows exactly what I wanted to see from him. I was happy with the little I saw of Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Valentine.

Oh and that BRIEF glimpse of Magnus? NOT ENOUGH! Godfrey Gao certainly looks the part - I want to see him act. Overall it seems like they've done a pretty great job with turning these books into a movie. August needs to hurry up and get here so I can go see it.

OTHER

My birthday cake

My birthday 'party' was last weekend. I just had some cake and watched Once Upon A Time.

Every year I get a cake made and this year I decided it was going to be Peter Pan decorated! I thought it was awesome, and Peter Pan's story has long been one of my favourites.
