In Weather

Adolphe Valette

©2016 Susan Noyes Anderson

I went to England once.
London, not Manchester.
Rained cold, a bit sideways.
Dark, dreadful, dingy.
Under the weather.
I ran watered streets.
Unbooted, blithely undone.
Up, down, willy nilly.
Slowed through Piccadilly.
Magic.

Oy vey

Oy Vey
c2014 Susan Noyes Anderson

Oh no. Dear me. I'm out of sorts,
sick of the smoldering temp reports.
Each visit to my mom is sweet,
but still I cannot bear the heat.

111 in the shade,
the stuff of which Hades is made.
No soft wind ruffling my hair.
No desert breezes in the air.

In fact, no air to breathe at all.
It's gone till further notice, y'all.
Evaporated, so they say,
till further notice. Oy vey.

The Door Swings Open

Charleston door

©2013 Susan Noyes Anderson

It was Charleston in the fall,
no other bodies there to bend
the energy, just you and me (us...we),
begetting child-free memories to own.

The hotel reeked of history
and old rugs, water weeping from
the walls, halls filigreed in shades
of ochre, overlaid with stains of brown.

Our bed, four-postered, coverlet of lace,
commode beside, was dignified
by carved vitrine; replete with nicks, knickknacks,
dust tracks and violets––the velvet ones, with tales to tell.

It drew us into sweetness, thick
as warm molasses corked in clay
jugs, fading red to pink, the stink of slave
market graced now by art and flowers.

We walked for hours.

Joy in the City by the Bay

Today, let's pause and look around.

Across the Bay, much joy is found.

Our 49ers are Bowl-bound!

How lucky can one city be?

from winning pennants by the sea

to lighting Union Square's grand tree?

Just take a trolley to the ocean

(Pier 39 inspires devotion),

then watch a play, if that's your notion.

We've got it all...catch the ballet...

or catch a wave at Half Moon Bay...

the spot where famous surfers play.

Find views that no one can ignore,

or take a jog along the shore.

She always leaves you wanting more.

The City by the Bay.

GOOD LUCK, NINERS!

From Lightning to Aloha

A modern-day version of striking gold in San Francisco.

On Friday the 13th, 8 lightning bolts hit the Golden Gate Bridge.

We had a big thunderstorm in our area, too, even though we're more than a few miles south of the city. Our son, Ryan (who turns 32 today), happened to be spending last Thursday night with us because we had taken him out to dinner for an early birthday celebration. It was quite late when he decided to go for his nightly run, despite the fact that it was pitch dark and raining slightly. In the middle of his route, the skies erupted with a thunder and lightning spectacular that included buckets of the wet stuff pouring down on him. Yep, those raindrops kept falling on his head, but that didn't mean his eyes would soon be turning red (or that he would be hurrying home to bed, either). Instead, he finished his run while his crazy mom went out looking for him in my Pilot, worried that he might get struck by lightning himself! Of course, his father insisted it wasn't necessary, and both of them laughed at me when I came in from the cold, some time after Ryan had already arrived.

The birthday boy did look like a drowned rat, so I guess I had the last laugh...

=D

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RYAN!
We struck gold the day you were born.
HAVE FUN IN KAUAI!!

(Shouldn't every birthday be celebrated in the Aloha state?

On the Road Again...

Headed down the Road to Hana.

Complete with very charming old bridge.

And winding roads.

And open views.

(All enjoyed at a pretty slow pace.)

We saw some beautiful rock formations and lush vegetation.

And on the way home, we spotted more than a few surfers.

And paddleboarders and sailors.

And people out enjoying a beautiful day in Maui.

As for me, I enjoyed these beautiful trees in Maui.

And these beautiful views.

And this, right out my living room window.

And this...

And oh yes, these.

Fishing off the ladder there is pretty cool.

And so is watching the sunset.

And getting in some reading while waiting for dinner.

This neat little spot was in Lahaina.

Front Street was cool too, also in Lahaina.

In fact, we're heading back there tonight!

Tomorrow we fly home, but we've had a great time!!

Better than Gold

A day by the ocean is better than gold.

But even more brilliant is what the nights hold.

The glow of the sun as it kisses the sea

infuses our spirits with tranquility...

reminds us that endings make room for new starts...

and warms us with beauty that captures our hearts.

Not even the menu serves up a distraction.

For Todd, it's the view that provides the attraction.

(Though fish and filet do give some satisfaction!)
