Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the Shell Ferrari Historical Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998.
It's the 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO of Swiss driver Nicolaus Springer, chassis #4153GT with the Gioacchino Colombo 2,953cc V12 engine. Its original owner was Pierre Dumay who finished in fourth place with it in the 1963 Le Mans 24 Hour Race in the colours of Ecurie Francorchamps partnered by Léon Dernier.

Friday's Ferrari

This car competed in the Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1999.
Car number 95 is the 1972 Ferrari 312P, serial number #0888, of Englebert Stieger. There's no number 95 in the programme of the event but Christoph Stieger was down to drive number 55, a Ferrari 250 GTO, and appears to have driven the 312P instead. The silver car behind it is Nicolaus Springer’s 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, serial number #4153GT, which was driven in the race by Peter Bradfield and Andrew Hall with the race number 159.

1957 Maserati 300S

This car took part in the Louis Vuitton '50s Sports Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995.
It's the 1957 Maserati 300S, chassis #3074, of Mark Knopfler and has a 2,991cc 6-cylinder inline engine that was based on the 2½ litre unit of the 250F Grand Prix car with a longer stroke, and took part in the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1957. The car was originally bought by Brazilian driver Antonio Mendes de Barros and stayed in South America till the 1970s when it was acquired by Australian Bruce Spicer, then via Bob Jane and John R Sheppard to Kerry Manolas. In 1994 it was bought by Mark Knopfler. The number 10 car behind the Maserati is Hartmut Ibing's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.

Friday's Ferrari

This was one of the competitors in the Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1999.
It's the 1963 Ferrari 250GTO of Paul Pappalardo, chassis #5111GT with the Gioacchino Colombo 2,953cc V12 engine. The car was originally supplied to French driver Jean Guichet who used it to win the Tour de France in 1963.

Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the Coys of Kensington Pre-1964 GT Car Race at the Coys international Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1999.
It's the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO of Harry Leventis, chassis 3505GT, originally built for the British UDT Laystall team, and still bearing their pale green colours, the car was intended to be driven by Stirling Moss, but his career ending accident at Goodwood in April 1962 meant that he never actually got to drive the car in competition. Innes Ireland took his place and won the Tourist Trophy race at Goodwood in August 1992. The car has, of course, the Gioacchino Colombo designed 2,953cc V12 tipo 168 engine. At this Silverstone meeting the driving was shared by Stirling Moss and Tony Dron.

Friday's Ferrari

Ferrari was the featured marque at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997, and as well as a special display of Ferraris in the paddock there were three races in the weekend programme set aside for Ferraris.
Here are two of the Ferrari 250 GTOs that were present that day, both owned by Anthony Bamford, then Sir Anthony and now Lord Bamford. The one on the left is a 1963 car, chassis #4399GT that was rebodied at the end of 1963 with a 1964 series II body. This car was first owned by Colonel Ronnie Hoare of Maranello Concessionaires and raced by several drivers including Mike Parkes, Graham Hill and Innes Ireland, Graham Hill winning the 1963 Tourist Trophy race at Goodwood and Mike Parkes the 1964 Spa 500 km race. Innes Ireland and Tony Maggs finished in sixth place in the 1964 Le Mans 24 Hour race. It was bought by Anthony Bamford in 1969 and at this Silverstone meeting it was driven by Frank Sytner in the Coys of Kensington Ferrari GT race. On the right is a 1962 car, chassis #3767GT that doesn't appear to have taken part in any of the races that weekend. It was originally owned by David Piper who raced the car in 1962 and early 1963, his best results being wins in the Kyalami 9 hour race and the Angola Grand Prix in late 1962. It then spent some years in the USA with various owners before returning to the UK and eventually being acquired by Anthony Bamford in 1974. Both cars are powered by the 2,953cc V12 engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph in the paddock at Silverstone at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting in July 1997.
These four cars, all Ferrari 250 GTOs, took part in the Coys of Kensington Ferrari GT Race. All four cars have the 2,953cc Tipo 168/62 Gioacchino Colombo designed V12 engine, the two cars on the left being 1962 cars, and the two on the right 1963. The first car on the left is that of Paul Pappalardo, chassis #5111GT, and originally supplied to French driver Jean Guichet who used it to win the Tour de France in 1963. The next car is chassis #4713GT, one of Anthony Wang's cars, which was driven in the race by Louis Sellyei and is unusual in that it has a Pinin Farina 330 LM body. It was originally owned by Luigi Chinetti and its first major race was the 1963 Le Mans 24 Hour race where it was driven to sixth place overall by David Piper and Masten Gregory. The third car is another of Anthony Wang's cars, chassis #3769GT, and he drove this one in the race himself. This car's first owner was Fernand Tavano, and he and André Simon gave this car its first major outing in the 1962 Le Mans 24 Hour race but failed to finish. The last car is the 1962 car of Peter Sachs, chassis #4091GT, which started off with the 1962 GTO bodywork but was re-bodied in December 1963 with a 1964 style body. It was first owned by Sergio Bettoja, but does not appear to have taken part in any major events until it was entered in the 1964 Tour de France where it was driven by Ludivico Scarfiotti and Giampiero Biscaldi. It failed to finish the event.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997 where there was a special display of Ferraris, and the GT race which was a feature of these Coys meetings was reserved for Ferraris with 30 listed in the programme of the event, including 11 of the 250 GTO cars.
This car wasn't listed amongst those taking part in that GT race, but it's the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO of Harry Leventis, chassis 3505GT. Originally built for the British UDT Laystall team, and still bearing their pale green colours, the car was intended to be driven by Stirling Moss, but his career ending accident at Goodwood in April 1962 meant that he never actually got to drive the car in competition. Innes Ireland took his place and won the Tourist Trophy race at Goodwood in August 1992. The car has, of course, the Gioacchino Colombo designed 2,953cc V12 tipo 168 engine.
Car number 61 behind the 250 GTO is the 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, chassis 5031GT, of Richard Taylor that was driven by Barrie Williams in the GT race.

Friday's Ferrari

This car was driven by Robs Lamplough and Enrico Guggiari in the Coys of Kensington GT Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995.
It's Robs Lamplough's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis #3445GT, and was once owned by Sweden's Ulf Norinder, hence the Swedish colours of blue and yellow. It has the Ferrari 250 2,953cc V12 engine with single overhead camshafts on each bank and 6 Weber carburettors.

On 20 June 2014 I showed a photograph of this car at the Coys Silverstone meeting in 1994.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph from a pit garage during a practice session for a Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge race at the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Donington Park in June 2003.
It's Dutchman Frederico Kroymans' 2,953cc V12 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, and is chassis #4757GT.

The car appears in the pit lane in the background of one of the photographs I'd taken at this meeting that I showed on 23 August 2013.

Cooper T40 Bristol Bobtail

This car competed in the Louis Vuitton 1950s Sports Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997, although it's first appearance was as a Formula One car in the 1955 British Grand Prix at Aintree.
Listed in the programme as Katharina Schmidt's 1955 Cooper Bobtail, it's the 2 litre Cooper T40 Bristol that Jack Brabham drove in his first World Championship Formula 1 race in 1955.

On 20 May 2014 I showed a photograph of Katharina Schmidt sitting in this car in the paddock at Silverstone in 1993.

The car behind the Cooper is Paul Pappalardo's 3 litre 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis #5111GT.

Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the Coys of Kensington Ferrari GT Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997.
It's the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO of Peter Sachs, chassis #4091GT. Some Ferrari 250 GTOs had their original engines replaced by 4 litre V12 units, but this car still has the 2,953cc V12 engine. Peter Sachs acquired the car in 1981 and has competed regularly with it both in the USA and in Europe and you can read the history of the car here.

Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the Shell Ferrari Historical Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997.
According to the programme of the event car number 1 is Engelbert Stieger's 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, which was due to be driven in the race by Christoph Stieger, but the number 1 above is Engelbert Stieger's 3 litre 1972 Ferrari 312PB, chassis #0888. The blue car number 51 at the top left of the photograph is Engelbert Stieger's 3 litre 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO which took part in the Coys of Kensington Ferrari GT race and is chassis #3589GT, and the number 38 car at the side of the 312PB is Ernst Schuster's 2 litre 1956 Ferrari 500 TRC, chassis #0660MDTR, which also took part in the Shell Ferrari Historical Challenge race.

Friday's Ferrari

This was one of five examples of this model taking part in the Coys of Kensington GT Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995.
It's Brandon Wang's 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, shown as a 1961 model in the programme of the event -though Ferrari didn't start making this model till 1962. It's chassis #4219GT, and the car was designed by Giotto Bizzarrini, the body by Sergio Scaglietti and the 3 litre V12 engine was the Tipo 168 designed by Gioacchino Columbo.

Friday's Ferrari

There was a large display of cars at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997 forming a tribute to Ferrari, and this was one of the cars featured.
It's a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis #3729GT, first owned by John Coombs and the board in front of the car reads:
1962
FERRARI GTO
RACED IN 1962/3 BY
GRAHAM HILL, MIKE PARKES & JACK SEARS
FOR JOHN COOMBS

In 1997 the owner of the car was Jack Sears. The car next to it is a 1955 Ferrari 555 Super Squalo.

Friday's Ferrari

I've shown two photographs of this car previously, on 18 April 2012 and 30 Oct 2015 which were taken at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1994 when it was part of a display paying tribute to Juan Manuel Fangio.
It's a 1949 Ferrari 166 F2 car, Enzo Ferrari's first single seat racing car, and the chassis number is 011F. It is thought to be one of the cars that Fangio drove early in his career before he joined the Alfa Romeo F1 team and had been fully restored by Tony Merrick in the 4 years before this appearance. The blue and yellow car behind the 166 is Robs Lamplough's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis number 3445GT.

Friday's Ferrari

This is another photograph of the Robs Lamplough Ferrari 250 GTO at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1994 that I showed on 20 June 2014. It's serial number 3445GT and was originally owned by Luciano Conti of Bologna. It later passed to Ulf Norinder of Sweden, which is when it received its Swedish racing colours of blue and yellow.

Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the BRDC '60s GT Race at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992.
It's Hartmut Ibing's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, one of three such cars in the race, and the programme of the event had this to say about them:

'In keeping with today's Ferrari theme, there are no fewer than three teams of Maranello cars in the GT race, one from Italy, one from the Netherlands and one British. Included in the total are three GTOs. They are headed by Nick Mason's car, registered 250GTO, originally an Ecurie Francorchamps car which was third at Le Mans in 1962 and won the following year's Spa 500km race. Sir Anthony Bamford's was first raced by David Piper, though German driver Hartmut Ibing's was campaigned by rather less successful drivers.
Stirling Moss, who raced the prototype GTO right at the end of his career, is the star driver in the Ferrari line-up, partnering Mason, while former British touring car champion Frank Sytner drives the Bamford car and historic racing star Peter Hannan shares Ibing's car.'

The serial number of Hartmut Ibing's car is 3809GT and you can see here on the barchetta.cc website who the 'rather less successful drivers' were who originally campaigned this car.

Friday's Ferrari

This is a scene inside a pit garage at Silverstone in July 1999 at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting. All three of these cars took part in the Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge race.
Car number 95 is the 1972 Ferrari 312P, serial number 0888, of Englebert Stieger. There's no number 95 in the programme of the event but Christoph Stieger was down to drive number 55, a Ferrari 250 GTO, and appears to have driven the 312P instead. Car number 76 is a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4, serial number 16363, owned and driven that day by Nicolaus Springer, who also owned the 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO behind it, serial number 4153GT which was driven in the race by Peter Bradfield and Andrew Hall.

Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the Coys of Kensington GT Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1994.
It's a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO which was driven in the race by the then owner, Lindsay Owen-Jones. The serial number of the car is 3413GT.
