Friday's Ferrari

The Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998 celebrated the 50th anniversary of racing at the Silverstone circuit with a display of cars representing each of the years from 1948 to 1997. This car (although a 1957 car) represented the year 1958.
It's a 1957 Ferrari 500TRC, a revised version of the previous year's 500TR to comply with Annex C of the new regulations introduced for 1957. The 1,985cc 4-cylinder inline engine was designed by Aurelio Lampredi and the body was fashioned by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, and the 500TRC was never used by the Ferrari works team, being solely raced by private entrants. This particular car is #0686MDTR and was originally owned by Austrian Gotfrid Köchert who in 1957 competed with it in the Mille Miglia, the Nürburgring 1000km race and the Le Mans 24 Hour race. After spending a couple of years in Cuba it went to the USA until it came to the UK in the late 1980s and was acquired in 1996 by Mody Enav who was the owner when it appeared at this Silverstone meeting.

Friday's Ferrari

I photographed this car at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.
This car started off life in 1963 as a Ferrari 250 GTE Series III with the 2,953cc V12 engine, but in the early 1980s was rebodied as a Ferrari 500 TRC. At the time of this Donington Park meeting it was owned by Stuart Anderson and didn't take part in any of the races.

Friday's Ferrari

This photograph was taken at McLean's Corner during the 1950s Drum-Braked Sports Racing Cars race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.
It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, chassis #682MDTR which is powered by a 1,984cc twin overhead camshaft 4-cylinder inline engine derived from the one used in the Formula 2 cars of 1952/53. The Ferrari 500 TR of 1956 was the first Ferrari to be labelled 'Testa Rossa', which refers to the red colour of the two camshaft covers, and the 500 TRC was the customer version of that car. Following the Ferrari is the 1959 Elva Mk 5 of David Brock-Jest and further back is Albert Otten's 1952 Allard J2.

I've shown photographs of David Cottingham's car previously, most recently on 1 September 2017.

Maserati 300 S

I took these photographs at the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association's International Historic Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park in May 2004.
This is the 1955 Maserati 300 S of José Albuquerque, chassis #3054. The Maserati 300 S has a 3 litre straight-6 engine based on the 2½ litre unit of the 250F Grand Prix car with a lengthened stroke, and competed in the World Sportscar Championship races from 1955 to 1957. This particular car was very successful, being victorious in the hands of Jean Behra, Luigi Musso, Juan Fangio and Stirling Moss amongst others. It subsequently passed through various hands, including Lord Charles Brocket (who thankfully didn't do any lasting damage to the car) before being acquired by José Albuquerque, and is currently owned by Stephan Rettenmaier.
Here's José Albuquerque at the Old Hairpin during the HGPCA Race for Pre-1959 Drum-Braked Sports Cars behind the 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC of David Cottingham and leading the 1955 Lister Bristol of Tony Wood.

Friday's Ferrari

This is a car I've featured several times previously, and this photograph was taken at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995.
It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, chassis #0682MDTR, with the Lampredi designed 4-cylinder inline 2-litre engine and a Scaglietti body. The car was originally campaigned by Jacques Swaters' Ecurie National Belge team with whom it competed at the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hour race in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Harris, finishing in 9th place overall and winning the 2-litre class.

Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the Shell Ferrari Historical Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997.
According to the programme of the event car number 1 is Engelbert Stieger's 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, which was due to be driven in the race by Christoph Stieger, but the number 1 above is Engelbert Stieger's 3 litre 1972 Ferrari 312PB, chassis #0888. The blue car number 51 at the top left of the photograph is Engelbert Stieger's 3 litre 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO which took part in the Coys of Kensington Ferrari GT race and is chassis #3589GT, and the number 38 car at the side of the 312PB is Ernst Schuster's 2 litre 1956 Ferrari 500 TRC, chassis #0660MDTR, which also took part in the Shell Ferrari Historical Challenge race.

Friday's Ferrari

This car was part of the Ferrari Feature at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992.
It's a 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC Spyder with Scaglietti bodywork, and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

13     500 TRC
In-line 4-cylinder engine; 2 litres; 180bhp at 7000rpm;
ifs/double wishbones/coil springs; rigid axle rear/coil
springs. A development of the previous year's 500 Testa
Rossa, the TRC version was built to meet the 1957
Appendix C regulations and intended for customer use
only. This car owned by Austrian G Kochert was at the
1957 Le Mans, Kochert/Bauer, DNF and at the 1000
Kms that year where it won the Sport 200 Class for
Kochert.

One of 19 cars built, this Ferrari 500 TRC has the serial number 0686MDTR.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph at the HGPCA's Donington International Historic Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park in May 2004.
It's David Cottingham's 2-litre 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, which I have featured several times previously. The car immediately behind it is Christopher Keen's 1954 Kurtis 500, and the car on the trailer in the background is the Austin Healey 3000 MkI that Chris Clarkson and Ted Williams shared in the Gentleman Drivers GT and Sports Endurance Race.

Friday's Ferrari

Here's a car that took part in the Champagne Charles Heidsieck Sports Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993.
It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, originally campaigned by Ecurie Nationale Belge and had the four-cylinder 2 litre Lampredi designed engine. Behind the Ferrari is Willie Tuckett's 1955 Jaguar D-type, and number 32 on the left is Simon Draper's 1955 Bristol 450S.

Friday's Ferrari

This is a car that appears regularly at historic car meetings in the hands of the owner David Cottingham and is here seen at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in 1993.
It's a 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, with a 2 litre 4-cylinder engine, that was conceived as a customer car and never raced by the works. The serial number is 0682MDTR. Behind it is the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France, serial number 0911GT, then owned by Reza Rashidian.

Friday's Ferrari

Here's a Ferrari photographed in the pit garage at the VSCC Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy meeting at Donington Park in June 2003 which isn't exactly what it appears to be.
It looks like a 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC but it actually started off life as a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTE, being rebuilt in it's present form in the early 1980s and the serial number is 4873GT. The car has belonged to Stuart Anderson since 1997 and you can read something of the history of the car here on his website. Have a look down the list of contents on the website as well - I found it most interesting and informative.

Friday's Ferrari

Today's car was photographed at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993.
Although shown in the programme of the meeting as a 1956 car, according to www.barchetta.cc it's a 1957 Ferrari 500TRC with Scaglietti bodywork. It was first owned by Ecurie Nationale Belge (also known as Equipe National Belge) which was formed by a merger of Ecurie Belge and Ecurie Francorchamps. It finished in seventh place in the 1957 Le Mans 24 hour race in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Harris, winning the 2 litre class. The serial number of the car is 0682MDTR and it was driven at this meeting by the owner David Cottingham.

Friday's Ferrari

Today's car is a 1956 Ferrari 500TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, an improved version of the 500TR which was introduced in 1954 as a replacement for the 500 Mondial and was the first Ferrari to carry the 'Testa Rossa' name. This photo was taken at the 2005 See Red meeting at Donington Park.
