Friday's Ferrari

This is a photograph that I took at Luffield Corner during the HGPCA Sports Car Race at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992.
The yellow car is the 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC of David Cottingham which has a twin overhead camshaft 4-cylinder inline 1,984cc engine derived from the 1953 Formula 2 unit designed by Aurelio Lampredi and a body designed and built by Scaglietti. The 500TRC was an updated version of the 500TR, the first to have the 'Testa Rossa' red camshaft covers, modified to comply with the 1957 Appendix C Regulations, and it was a 'customer' car, never being raced by Scuderia Ferrari. David Cottingham's car is chassis #0682MDTR that was first owned by Ecurie Nationale Belge (also known as Equipe National Belge) which was formed by a merger of Ecurie Belge and Ecurie Francorchamps. It finished in seventh place in the 1957 Le Mans 24 hour race in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Harris, winning the 2 litre class. The green car at the side of the Ferrari is a 1957 Lotus Eleven, probably that of Carol Spagg, while behind are the red 1954 Austin Healey 100M of Bill Clegg and the 1952 Jaguar C-Type of Hugh Taylor.

Friday's Ferrari

This was one of the competitors in the Coys of Kensington Ferrari GT Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997.
It's the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta TdF of David Cottingham. Four different versions of the TdF were built between 1955 and 1959 and are identified by the number of louvres in the sail panel behind the side windows. Fourteen examples of the earliest model were produced, and these cars didn't have any louvres. The second version had fourteen louvres and nine of these were built, then seventeen cars were built with three louvres and lastly thirty-seven with one louvre. David Cottingham's car, which is chassis #0585GT, is one of the fourteen louvre models. All the cars have the Giaocchino Colombo designed 2,953cc V12 engine, and have Scaglietti designed bodies except for five of the Series One model where the bodies were designed by Zagato. This car is finished in the colours of Tony Parravano, who was its first owner.

Friday's Ferrari

This photograph was taken at McLean's Corner during the 1950s Drum-Braked Sports Racing Cars race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.
It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, chassis #682MDTR which is powered by a 1,984cc twin overhead camshaft 4-cylinder inline engine derived from the one used in the Formula 2 cars of 1952/53. The Ferrari 500 TR of 1956 was the first Ferrari to be labelled 'Testa Rossa', which refers to the red colour of the two camshaft covers, and the 500 TRC was the customer version of that car. Following the Ferrari is the 1959 Elva Mk 5 of David Brock-Jest and further back is Albert Otten's 1952 Allard J2.

I've shown photographs of David Cottingham's car previously, most recently on 1 September 2017.

Maserati 300 S

I took these photographs at the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association's International Historic Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park in May 2004.
This is the 1955 Maserati 300 S of José Albuquerque, chassis #3054. The Maserati 300 S has a 3 litre straight-6 engine based on the 2½ litre unit of the 250F Grand Prix car with a lengthened stroke, and competed in the World Sportscar Championship races from 1955 to 1957. This particular car was very successful, being victorious in the hands of Jean Behra, Luigi Musso, Juan Fangio and Stirling Moss amongst others. It subsequently passed through various hands, including Lord Charles Brocket (who thankfully didn't do any lasting damage to the car) before being acquired by José Albuquerque, and is currently owned by Stephan Rettenmaier.
Here's José Albuquerque at the Old Hairpin during the HGPCA Race for Pre-1959 Drum-Braked Sports Cars behind the 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC of David Cottingham and leading the 1955 Lister Bristol of Tony Wood.

Friday's Ferrari

This is a car I've featured several times previously, and this photograph was taken at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995.
It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, chassis #0682MDTR, with the Lampredi designed 4-cylinder inline 2-litre engine and a Scaglietti body. The car was originally campaigned by Jacques Swaters' Ecurie National Belge team with whom it competed at the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hour race in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Harris, finishing in 9th place overall and winning the 2-litre class.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph at the HGPCA's Donington International Historic Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park in May 2004.
It's David Cottingham's 2-litre 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, which I have featured several times previously. The car immediately behind it is Christopher Keen's 1954 Kurtis 500, and the car on the trailer in the background is the Austin Healey 3000 MkI that Chris Clarkson and Ted Williams shared in the Gentleman Drivers GT and Sports Endurance Race.

Friday's Ferrari

Here's a photograph I took at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992.
It's a model I've featured a couple of times previously, on 9 November 2012 and 1 May 2015, and it's a 1956 Ferrari 860 Monza, serial number 0602M, owned at that time by David Cottingham. The photographs I showed previously were at the 1995 Silverstone meeting, but the 1992 event featured a Ferrari display, and the programme said this about the car:

25   860 Monza
In-line 4-cylinder engine; 3.4 litres; 310bhp at 6200 rpm;
ifs/double wishbones/transleaf springs. De Dion
rear/transleaf springs. Introduced 1955 for use by works
drivers. Following on from the 3-litre 750 Monza some of
the 860's were re-engined 750's but three, this car
included , were built as 860's. This car was instrumental
in bringing to Ferrari the 1956 World Sports Car
Championship in the hands of such drivers as Musso,
Castellotti, Fangio, Hawthorn.

Behind the 860 Monza is one of Ferrari's Fiat transporters, used by Scuderia Ferrari from 1959.

Friday's Ferrari

Here's a car that took part in the Champagne Charles Heidsieck Sports Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993.
It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, originally campaigned by Ecurie Nationale Belge and had the four-cylinder 2 litre Lampredi designed engine. Behind the Ferrari is Willie Tuckett's 1955 Jaguar D-type, and number 32 on the left is Simon Draper's 1955 Bristol 450S.

Friday's Ferrari

Today's car was photographed at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993.
Although shown in the programme of the meeting as a 1956 car, according to www.barchetta.cc it's a 1957 Ferrari 500TRC with Scaglietti bodywork. It was first owned by Ecurie Nationale Belge (also known as Equipe National Belge) which was formed by a merger of Ecurie Belge and Ecurie Francorchamps. It finished in seventh place in the 1957 Le Mans 24 hour race in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Harris, winning the 2 litre class. The serial number of the car is 0682MDTR and it was driven at this meeting by the owner David Cottingham.
