Butterscotch Brownies and a Gift Bag Tutorial

Hey hey! It's finally here!!!
A couple of weeks ago, I was honored to guest post over at Skip to my Lou.
Well, today I'm going to share those Butterscotch Brownies with you guys!
Be excited!
Be very excited!

Goodness, gracious these are good.
We've been making these in my family for years!
Can I tell you what my family actually calls them?
Crack brownies.
Yep.
They're that addicting...so be warned.

Of course, with any good recipe,
it helps to round up all your ingredients first!
That way you know if you're out of something so you can find a substitute.

For these brownies, you need to melt your butterscotch morsels
and butter over a water bath on the stove.

If you have a double boiler...fantastic!

If not, do the next best thing:
place a metal mixing bowl over a saucepan with a couple inches
of water and you, too, can achieve melted morsel goodness.

The water should be boiling softly, simmering really.
See? Almost ready!
Stir it around to help it melt and mix more evenly.

Do NOT be alarmed if it looks like this when you
take it off the stove and stir in your brown sugar...

Because once it cools and you start mixing...it turns to spun gold, baby!

Be careful not to over bake...these tend to look gooey in the center...
you'll be tempted to keep adding a few minutes.
Resist, my friend, resist.
I know this from experience.
I actually should have taken these out about 3 minutes earlier than I did.
Oh well...they were still soft and delicious.

This mix is easy to give...
especially in an easy to make fabric gift bag.

Once you bag your dry ingredients, fold your fabric lengthwise
and measure the width of your bags.  Add an inch or so to each side.
Cut so that when you sew the sides,
the bottom is the fold in the fabric and the top is open.

To keep it simple, just cut the open end in a zigzag pattern.
It doesn't even have to be perfect.
Fold so that the right sides are together,
sew up the sides, leaving the top open.

Turn your bag right side out...and fill with your bags of dry ingredients.

For these brownies, there are 3 dry components:
1. Brown Sugar
2. The flour, salt, and baking powder.
3. Butterscotch Morsels

Include a printout of the instructions inside the bag.
Tie it all up with a pretty tag and some twine...you've got a great hostess gift.

 Butterscotch Brownies
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 – 11.5 oz pkg butterscotch morsels
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ cup {1 stick} butter
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tsp real vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped nuts {optional ~ I never put nuts in mine, my mom always puts nuts in hers}

Preheat oven to 350°. Combine dry ingredients, set aside.
Melt morsels and butter in a double boiler; remove from heat and transfer to a large bowl.
Stir in brown sugar; cool 5 min. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Blend in flour mixture.
Stir in nuts {optional}. Spread evenly into greased 13x9x2 pan.
Bake 30-35 minutes (check at 30). Cool and Cut.
For thinner brownies...15x10x1 pan, bake 25-30 minutes.

Oh, and I am not to be held responsible if you
suddenly become butterscotch brownie dependent.
Just sayin'.

Alrighty then...
you guys be good and safe on Halloween!
Check your candy and brush your teeth!

BTW...what candy do you steal from your kids' stash?
And which ones will NOBODY eat?

Be Mine Printable Bunting

Are you bored, listless, lacking motivation?
Do you wander around the house sighing heavily?

Then YOU need.........a vacation that involves palm trees and sunny beaches.

Sorry, I don't have one to offer, but if you find one...I'd be happy to tag along.

I'm not really bored...just experiencing blogger's block.

Ugh...and I've only just begun. :)

Today I offer up...this printable BE MINE banner.

I almost didn't post this.

I thought, what will all those expert printable makers
in the blogosphere think of my creation?

Will it just be a sad attempt at bunting banner glory?

Eh, who cares...fear of failure is the only stumbling block to great success.

That's what I tell myself anyway.

So, for your printing pleasure...a bunting for you.

You can see it in action at a Sweetheart Banquet here.

I used a tiny rectangle punch and strung on ribbon.
I added bits of pink ribbon between the triangles for more frills.

You could use cute baker's twine...add tulle.

Whatever your little heart desires.

This is the first time I've tried to make a link to a download.
It is in Google docs and should be accessed through the above link.
{It looks funny on the screen but it downloads
and prints fine...can anyone explain this to me?}

PLEASE let me know if it doesn't work...
and I will try something else.

I used to think I was tech-savvy until I
started messing around in the blog world. :)

Have a great weekend!

Smooches to all!

Indoors S'mores Party

Game called on account of rain.
Sheesh.

We hadn't really intended this to be an indoor party.

We had EVERY intention of having this
fire-breathing gooey-ness outside.

But, alas, the weather had other ideas.
As soon as we got all the stuff outside...it started to pour.

Luckily, I hadn't planned to use the patio fire bowl to roast our mallows.

See the pots at the top of this photo?
Gel pots from my chafing dish.

We surrounded the pots with river rock to withstand the heat.
Hey...those are the straws from this post. :)

Worked like a charm.
Don't worry. It's safe.  I checked.
And...we tested some first to make sure there was no funky taste.

Did someone say {fire}?
:)

I'm not sure McKenzie would appreciate this picture.

Here's a happy face.
I used the flash here so you can't see the flames.

It's not like teenagers need treat bags.
So I just made them up some portable
S'mores snack bags to go.

No roasting necessary.

Honey Maid has mini graham cracker snacks.
They are sooooo cute!
They're about an inch square and perfect for this mix.

I kinda eye-balled it, but I'd say it was
just about equal parts the mini graham crackers,
milk chocolate morsels and mini marshmallows.

Yummy.

If  you can't find the mini grahams,
Golden Grahams cereal would work just as great.
Or Teddy Grahams would be adorable!

And if you would like the bag toppers...here you go.
I know...I'm a little morbid. :)
I used the print wizard thingy on my computer.
I think I put it in the 3.5 X 5 size (4 copies per page).
Make sure you un-click the "make picture fit to frame" box.

So...once they were all running on sugar...

they decided to play twister in the living room.
You saw the pretty party chairs in this wildy popular post.
It's so crazy I can't believe it!
17 - 21 year olds playing twister.
Pretty funny.

But I guess it wasn't challenging enough.

They invented EXTREME Twister.

See the numbers on the circles?

{P.S. Do NOT try this move at home}

They marked the circles with numbers...then they
would roll a die then spin for the color.

Hilarious.

Sometimes it's all about perspective.

Yep.

Wanna do S'mores indoors?

Here's what we had:
Wooden BBQ skewers. {Who'da thunk it?}
Marshmallows
Honey Grahams broken into squares
Milk Chocolate Bars
Fire :) ~ make sure you don't use anything
flammable to put your fire in and be sure to insulate with rocks.

Reese Cups make a yummy gooey alternative to plain chocolate.
I've seen this done with gourmet mallows...in flavors.
Any good melty chocolate candy would work.
Double chocolate: use chocolate grahams if you can find 'em.
Cute displays and serving containers are a MUST!

Ready for indoor s'mores?

Summer's not over yet!

Go on...get gooey!

Send me pics!

Have a fabulous day!
