Design Wall Monday–November 23, 2015

We just got back from a quick trip for an early Thanksgiving with Bill’s family.  It was wonderful seeing everyone and there were 78 people at dinner.  Amazing!  We left for Missouri on Thursday and are already back home.  Susie is back from the Vet where she stayed and all is well.

For my design wall this week I have my Saturday Sampler quilt.  I am quilting it today and tomorrow and plan to have it finished by Thanksgiving.

The background looks a little gray here but it is actually Moda Bella Black!  Very dramatic!

Design Wall Monday–September 14, 2015

Today on my design wall is my Allatoona BOM House Quilt.  I spent some time last week and got it caught up through the 9th month.

0915 9 Block Quilt

I got all the checkerboard pieces sewn together and even have the rest of them done and just patiently waiting for the blocks to be made.  I am really liking it.  It calls for 4 borders after this.  First will be a small border of the lime green, followed by slightly larger but still very small of the white dots and then another tiny border (1/2 “ finished) before a wider finishing border.  I plan to start looking for the final border soon but have no idea what to choose.

Design Wall Monday–September 7, 2015

Hope everyone is having a happy labor day.  I am busy making ice cream for tonight as well as trying to finish quilting my Christmas Quilt.  On my design wall today is my Allatoona BOM – the house quilt.  I am still behind on it and the monthly meeting is tomorrow.

090715

I have the block made for June but the house hasn’t been built around it and I still need to make July and September plus about a million four patches for the rest of the sashing.  I will be working on this on our Monday sew-ins until I get caught up.

Design Wall Monday–August 3, 2015

I know I disappeared again but I had a good excuse.  Bill had gallbladder surgery and ended  up in the hospital for eight days with complications.  At least the gallbladder is gone and hopefully he will feel better soon.  It has been a slow process. When he went to the hospital I was in Las Vegas with my sister but thanks to Delta, was able to get home the next morning.

I think things are getting back to normal and I actually started sewing again.  I have missed it.  We spent the morning at Tiny Stitches and I worked on my Christmas quilt.  It was supposed to be done for Christmas in July but Christmas is always coming so I hope to get it done soon.  I finished up all the blocks to day and have it up on the design wall at the shop.

0815 All blocks

I still need to put the rest of the rows together and then add the sashing.  At least the reindeer are done – they were a challenge.

I start a new beginner class tonight – wish me luck!  Twelve students!

Design Wall Monday–June 22, 2015

I haven’t shown my design wall for far to long.  Hope to get back in the habit so here is what is on my wall today.

I am working on a Christmas quilt for Christmas in July.  It is a design with rows somewhat like a Christmas Sweater.  Here are some of the pieces I have made so far.

062215

There will be a row of the nine patches, two rows of the poinsettia blocks, a row of the trees, two rows of the zig-zag and still to do a row of reindeer.  I have to finish up the row of nine patches and then on to the reindeer.  Takes a lot of time but I am really liking how it is turning out.

Design Wall Monday–March 16, 2015

On my design wall today is a quilt that I plan to enter into the guild show.  The deadline is today for entries and after I took this photo, I realized there is a mistake on the right side of the quilt.  Two of the blocks are turned wrong.  I took the photo yesterday so last night I picked out the two blocks and got them turned correctly.

031615

I am going to the shop this afternoon to teach a kids’ class so I will take the quilt again and take another photo,  I don’t know why I can see the problems in person but they are easy enough to see in a photo.  Thankfully, the quilt isn’t quilted yet.  The pattern is from Bonnie Hunter and is Many Scrappy Trips.  All the fabrics are batiks and it is 94 inches square.

Design Wall Monday–March 9, 2015

This is my first design wall of the year – not sure how I got off track but hopefully I am back.  This is the Hexie BOM from The Hexie Blog for 2014.  I have been undecided how I wanted to set them but decided yesterday to frame them with polka dots!

030915

More framing to do and then decide if I want to set them side by side or should I add a small sashing of the background?  Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Since Shop Hop started Saturday, I thought I would show my quilt.  The theme of the hop is Sweet Sixteen so I designed a block that has sixteen half square triangles to make a sixteen inch block and there are sixteen blocks.  Here is the finished quilt.

Design Wall Monday–November 10, 2014

Today on my design wall are blocks that were given to me by one of my students.  She is taking my Magical Slice and Dice class and hated the blocks she made.  I think they are great so I will finish making it. She thinks it is too dark and just not pleasing to her.

111014

I think I will pick up the light turquoise for the sashing and then perhaps a gray for the setting triangles.  When I go to teach tonight, I will look for the fabrics.  Let’s see how it turns out.

Design Wall Monday–September 22, 2014

Today on my design wall I have more One Block Wonder blocks.  After completing all the hexagons for the first quilt, I started thinking about the panel challenge that the Atlanta Modern Quilters Guild is focusing on.  Simple rules – make something from a panel.  I realized that the repeat on my fabric for the current OBW is 24 inches and that is what the width of the average panel is.  I decided to see what happens if you stack up six identical panels and cut them up.  This is what I have so far.

0914 Halloween Blocks 3

Interesting!  I have about 6-10 more hexagons to make before I try to arrange them.  This should be fun!  I bought an extra panel to put on the back of the quilt so you will be able to see where the blocks are coming from.  When I get the top together, I will post a photo of the panel for comparison. I am having a great time playing with them.

I plan on quilting the first OBW tonight so it will be ready for the class on Thursday.  This one will still be in process so students can see how it is put together.

Design Wall Monday–September 15, 2014

I am starting to sew together my OBW.  Here it is laid out on my bed.

Here it is from the side.

091514 - 2

After talking the photos, I started sewing the blocks together.  I just got two rows done before it was time to meet my friends for breakfast.

Looking good so far.

Design Wall Monday–September 8, 2014

Still working on my OBW – more progress but still a lot more to make.

090814-2

They are just stuck up on the wall, lots of rearranging to do when they are all made.  It is so much fun to see each one and how it turns out.

I did finish a quilt also.  This pattern is called Split Decision and the fabric line is Elementary by Sweetwater.  I love everything they have designed.

090814-1

It has wool batting so the texture of the quilting really shows up.

Design Wall Monday–September 1, 2014

Hard to believe it is already September.  The September design for the Hexie BOM came out today and I have the first 8 months on my design wall.  I am not sure about my sun – it kind of blends into the background.  I may remake it – or maybe not!

0814 January - August 1

The sun doesn’t look too bad in the photo – not bright but probably OK.

Design Wall Monday–August 25, 2014

I took the One Block Wonder blocks off my design wall for a couple of days to complete a new quilt.  This one is made with a pattern called Split Decision and the fabric line is Elementary by Sweetwater.  I am using a jelly roll for the center of the quilt and since the yardage arrived last week, I will pick up the borders, binding and backing fabrics and get it done!  I finished piecing most of the blocks last night when I couldn’t sleep so will be able to put all the blocks on the wall and start arranging them this afternoon.

Design Wall Monday–August 18, 2014

Hexies on my design wall today.  They are all one inch hexies but the flower is on a 16 1/2 inch background for the Hexie BOM.  The smaller on is for my SBS (Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler) that I am still working slowly on.  The background on this one needs to be trimmed to 6 1/2 inches.

0814 June Flower and SBS block

I still am loving my background for the BOM but I guess it is time to decide on the sashing.  Julia is using 1/2 square triangles for hers.  I still need to applique the August block which is a Sun.

Design Wall Monday–August 11, 2014

I am late with my design wall because my friends and I went on a river rafting trip this morning.  We had a great time and I will tell you all about it after I get some of the photos.

Here is what is on my design wall today.  It is the start of Carolina Crossroads – Bonnie Hunter’s first mystery from several years ago.  I did all the parts during the mystery but never got it put together.  At Bonnie Hunter club yesterday I got several of the blocks made and I am really liking how it is looking.

081114

Stuck down in the bottom corner is my sun for the Hexie BOM.  I need to get it put on the background before Hexie Club next week.

Design Wall Monday–August 4, 2014

This is my first design wall post in a few weeks.  On the wall today is a project from Las Vegas that only needs two borders to be added.  The pattern is called Mexican Star and was taught by my sister at the retreat.  After adding the borders, there are many triangles of fabric that need to be sewn down (kind of like a Cathedral Window) and then it will be ready to quilt.

080414

Here is a light version of the same quilt – interesting how different it looks.  This one is not mine but I think it belongs to Caroline.

080414 2

On this version you can see the loose triangles better.  They will get turned back and top stitched before quilting.

Fun pattern and since it makes a small quilt, not a big investment in time.

Design Wall Monday

I am still working on my Christmas quilt but had a little set-back this morning.  Here are the nine blocks ready for sashing.

070714 - 1

I started putting the sashing on but found a little problem with the bottom row.

070714 - 2

The two blocks on the right are backwards.  The red pinwheel goes in the middle and the one with the grey diamond goes on the right.  I took them apart this morning and hope to get them back together – correctly this afternoon.  Fortunately the sashing is pieced so I didn’t have to take it all off.

Design Wall Monday–June 30, 2014

Still working on the Christmas Quilt for Christmas in July.  Block 7 is almost finished so hopefully I can get the top finished in the next few days.

063013

I am still liking how it is coming out.  The white sashing will set off the blocks better than how they look on the design wall.

Design Wall Monday–June 16, 2014

I am working on a quilt for our Christmas in July party.  The fabric and pattern are called Solstice by Deb Strain for Moda.  The blocks are 16 inch and there are only 9 of them in the quilt so it should go quickly.  Here are the first two blocks.

0614 First Two Blocks

There are 5 different blocks, 2 each of 4 of them and the center block is unique.  I have the next one cut out and have started sewing them together so hopefully will have more progress soon.

I got the part for my Gammill so I am off to change it and hopefully quilt!

Design Wall Monday–May 19, 2014

Here is my design wall from last Monday.

051214

Here is is today!

051914

As you can probably tell, I mixed up each of the sections and kept the colors together.  I need to get a few more rows done but I think I like this version – maybe better.  When I teach this in July, I will have two different samples to show so that should be fun.

The pattern is Scrappy Mountain Majesties from Bonnie Hunter with help from Carol for inspiration.
