Hexies!

I am making batik hexies for a special project.  I worked on some today at the Allatoona Quilters’ Guild meeting.  We had a great presentation by Andi Barney about Modern Quilts.  It was fun.  Here are the hexies I have so far.

I am not sure how many I need since I am making it up as I go.  I think probably nine will work so not many more to make.

I will show the finished project later.

Hexie Love at the Allatoona Quilters’ Guild

What a wonderful day we had yesterday at the Allatoona Guild.  Our guest speaker/teacher was Julia Wood of The Hexie Blog.  She was great and I was so happy to finally meet her. Here we are together.

Julia entertained us with hexie stories and lots of hexie quilts.  After a wonderful potluck lunch we had a 3-hour class with circle hexies and also EPP.  Fun!

Here are a few of the quilts that she brought from Alabama to share with us.

She brought more quilts but I kept forgetting to take photos since I was so interested in looking at the quilts and listening to her stories.

Pieced Hexies

We made Pieced Hexies with Mickey Dupre yesterday.  None of mine are finished yet and I was not happy with the fabrics I used but I had a great time anyway.  Here are some photos of her work.  This Pieced Hexie is called Jazzy.

Atlanta Modern Quilt Guild

We had a brown bag challenge where we put 5 fat quarters in a brown bag and exchanged them.  We had a couple of months to make something out of the fat quarters.  We could add two additional fabrics – any amount and were supposed to use at least some of each of the fat quarters.

I received 5 fat quarters that were from Lakehouse a few years ago.  They were bright pink, lime green and black.  I looked at them for long time before I decided to make a set of placemats.  Since the pattern I used called for 4 fat quarters on the front, I bought a backing and then added a strip of the 5th fat quarter to each one so the backs are different but made from the same fabrics.

The back was a lime green polka dot with a strip of another green stripe.  Turns out that the fat quarters belonged to Rebecca.  I hope she likes her placemats.

I put some Amy Butler fat quarters in my paper bag and was lucky enough to have it given to Pam.  She actually made me a quilt!

Great big Hexies!  I love it!  I really like how she put the border on two sides and let the hexies float off the edge of the quilt.  Also she added a little extra print fabric into the binding.

2014 Hexie Block of the Month

I finished putting the top together on my Hexie BOM.  I really like it.  I need to do a little handwork to finish the butterfly and the sun but it is almost ready to quilt.

All the fabrics around the blocks are polka dots!

Design Wall Monday–March 9, 2015

This is my first design wall of the year – not sure how I got off track but hopefully I am back.  This is the Hexie BOM from The Hexie Blog for 2014.  I have been undecided how I wanted to set them but decided yesterday to frame them with polka dots!

More framing to do and then decide if I want to set them side by side or should I add a small sashing of the background?  Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Since Shop Hop started Saturday, I thought I would show my quilt.  The theme of the hop is Sweet Sixteen so I designed a block that has sixteen half square triangles to make a sixteen inch block and there are sixteen blocks.  Here is the finished quilt.

Hexie Club

We had a small showing at Hexie Club.  It was very cold and many of the group decided to stay home and stay warm.  Can’t say that I blame them.  It was cold!

Here are a couple of projects being worked on.

Last Block for 2014 Hexie BOM

I finally finished appliqueing the last block for last years Hexie BOM.  I had the hexies done for quite a while but somehow just didn’t get around to putting them on the background.  Now that all 12 are done, I really need to think about how I want to set them.  Not sure I like the half square triangles that Julia made but I can’t come up with anything else at this point.

I need to trim all of them and put them up on the wall to think about.

Hexie Club at Tiny Stitches

Last night we had our holiday party/meeting of Hexie Club.  We had food to share, sewed on our hexies and exchanged gifts.  Here are the gifts after they were opened.

1214 Gift Exchange

Our only rule is that the gift should be hexie related – worked out well.  I received the little turtle pin cushion and the tree ornament above it.  Of course the one with selvages is the one I made.

Only Rosemarie and I were working on the Hexie BOM.  Here are the blocks.

1214 December Wreaths

Mine is on top – one inch hexies.  Rosemarie made her wreaths from 3/4 inch and 1/4 hexies.

I have to finish the applique of the wreath and then I have all twelve blocks finished.  Next I need to decide how to set the blocks into a quilt.

Update from Melinda

I am back!  It has been a busy two weeks and I just didn’t seem to get around to updating the blog.  I finished teaching my two long-term classes (Beginning Machine Piecing and Sampler Savvy), went for an early Thanksgiving to Missouri (about 650 miles), went to a couple of Christmas parties and took a lot of photos.

First, here are the photos from the last Sampler Savvy class.

There was one more student but she was still working on her blocks so no finished quilt photos yet.  The next morning after the class we took off for Missouri.  On the way, we stopped in Paducah at Paperpieces.com.

1114 paperpieces

Fun – they are open to the public but you have to ring the bell and they happily let you in.  I made a few purchases – of course. and off we went towards Missouri.  We stopped in Marion, IL for the night and then finished up driving to Fulton, MO.  Visited with Bill’s family for a while and then went to the hotel.  Met them in town for dinner and on Saturday we had Thanksgiving dinner with over 50 family members.

Here are a few photos of Bill and his family.  First is with his mother.

Lots of good food, lots of time to to visit with family – great fun!

We stayed and visited with his mother again on Sunday and then left for home early Monday morning.  I drove all the way home on Monday since it seems to be foolish to stop when we were most of the way home.  There truly is nothing like home!  We even stopped at our local O’Charleys for dinner.

More to follow.
