Offerings from Literature Group

We're always looking for more good reads over here, and I enjoy especially hearing about books from other people. It gives me and my kids a chance to read something that we probably wouldn't have picked out for ourselves. Since we've participated in our homeschool group's literature group for several years now, I thought I'd share with you some of the novels that the 4th-6th grade level have read.

The copy of
    A Chrismas Carol
is shown in the hardback version (it's illustrated), since I wanted it to be something special for Sparks around Christmas time. The genres are not what we typically would choose, and still we have been pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed some of them. This is especially so with
    The Great Turkey Walk
(takes place during the Westward expansion),
    The Door in the Wall
(historical fiction), and
    Treasures in the Snow
(Christian fiction).

I think the only one which you may find questionable is
    Hatchet
. It tells the survival story of a boy stranded in the Canadian wilderness. This is one of the few that I have not read myself, but it does include profanity, some discussion or allusion to marital infidelity, and killing animals for food. It is supposed to be an enthralling adventure read. You can see a review for it here at CommonSense Media and judge for yourself if you think it will be suitable. All of the others would be considered rated "G" if they went by the current movie scale.

I hope you find something interesting and unexpected in this list for your kiddoes to enjoy. Next time I'll post about the books that I've read aloud to my two oldest. I think you'll see we slant a little to the fantasy genre.
