Three Men In a Boat
Monday morning, while waiting to go to the Toyota Dealership bodyshop I finished reading Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) by Jerome K. Jerome. I wrote about the reason for reading this on July 6 when discussing Have Space Suit - Will Travel. This is a nice humorous account of a boating holiday with anecdotes about previous boating adventures and other things. The volume that I bought is the Oxfords World's Classic version and it includes the sequel Three Men on the Bummel, but I am going to wait to read that another time. It has a lengthy introduction and notes that put some things in context of the time - it was published in 1889.

Samuel Ogle Baseball Game 7
Today was game 7 of the Samuel Ogle Middle School Rams fall baseball season. They played Buck Lodge Middle School again - this time at home. The first inning was scoreless for both teams, but in the bottom of the second, Ogle scored with a double followed by a single and then a two-run home run. Buck Lodge threatened in the top of the third with a leadoff single, but the runner was caught stealing third base for the first out of the inning. The next four players switched between walks and strikeouts to end the inning. Ogle got another run in the 3rd with a leadoff single, a couple of stolen bases and another single. In the top of the 4th the first two Buck Lodge players struck out and the final player grounded to short. The game was then called for time for a 4-0 Ogle victory. Ogle now is 5-0-2 for the season. Alan popped up to the shortstop in the second.
Update: articles about the week's games appeared in the Bowie Star and the Bowie Blade.

Hometeam Challenge Week 5
In the Ravens hometown challenge we again didn't as well as the previous week, getting only 77 points. Clinton Portis did great - 21 points, but everyone else had a subpar day. Tony Romo (21), Tomlinson (5), Santana Moss (0 - he failed to make a catch for the first time this season), T. Owens (12), D. Rosario (0), M. Stover (4 - his missed field goal cost the Ravens dearly), and the Ravens DST (14). Our weekly standings were #439 (Ravens) and #3935 (overall) - our worst rankings since the first week of the season. Overall for the five weeks we went from #2321 to #2499 and amongst Ravens fans from #256 to #271.
Looking at the other NFL fantasy challenges - the playbook challenge and the touchdown challenge: in the playbook challenge (you need a different set of three each week) we went with Tony Romo (183), Reggie Bush (93 - it didn't count his punt returns), and Eddie Royal (2x23) for 322 points and a total now of 1932. The highest score for the week was 746. Our poor score this week plummeted our ranking down to 14454. In the touchdown challenge we started a new streak with Reggie Bush.

Samuel Ogle Baseball Game 6
Today was game 6 of the Samuel Ogle Middle School Rams fall baseball season. They played Benjamin Tasker Middle School who has not yet lost a game. The game was a pitchers' duel with a 0-0 tie after three innings. We all thought the game should go another inning, but it was called due to time even though it started early and there was still light. Ogle threatened with the bases loaded twice. Alan just played left field and didn't hit this game. Tomorrow they play Buck Lodge Middle School again. The rained out game from last Wednesday is expected to be made up Wednesday next week.

Samuel Ogle Baseball Game 5
Yesterday was the new game 5 of the Samuel Ogle Middle School Rams fall baseball season. They played Greenbelt Middle School. This is the first of three games scheduled this week. In the top of the first, Ogle didn't do much and unfortunately in the bottom of the 1rst Greenbelt struck quickly. They got a home run in the short right field after a leadoff walk. This was followed by two singles and another run coming in off a bad throw trying to pick a runner off first. The bases were then loaded with another single and a hit batsman. The Ogle pitcher struck out the next batter and caught the runner on 1rst napping and picked him off. The next batter was also struck out and the threat was over.
In the second inning, Ogle managed to load the bases off of several dropped third strikes and a walk, but couldn't bring in a run. All three Greenbelt batters struck out in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the third, the first batter should have been safe at first after a dropped third strike, but he was called out. Then a double and a home run later and they were just down 3-2. Ogle then got a walk, a stolen base, and the tying run came in off a weak single. Another disputed call caught the runner at third and a strikeout later the inning the over with the score tied 3-3.
In the bottom of the third Greenbelt led off with a double. After strikeout the next player singled, but the runner was called out at home, saving the game. The next batter was hit and a strikeout ended the inning. The game was called for time and ended in a 3-3 tie. Today they play Benjamin Tasker Middle School who has not yet lost a game. Alan was one of the batters who got to first in the second off a dropped third strike. He also stole second base.
