getting back in the saddle

had a bone doctor appointment couple weeks ago and he told me that i could return to 'normal' activities. "If it hurts, stop doing it" (well *duh*)
you don't have to tell me twice!!

armed with a new bolt of batting i quilted five of my own quilts and i feel that getting back to client quilts is coming very soon!!

*muhaha*

this is my pansy quilt made from blocks won way back in August 2011 from the block lotto..... crap, that long ago *slacker*

well this top is probably older than that... it's made from a LQS's BOM's blocks in my fabrics from when we first moved to cobb county...2007/2008  *wow*

i wanted to see what a monochromatic quilt would look like and i wanted to challenge myself- so i choose brown.  *shrug* not all ideas are legendary

i call it chocolate covered strawberries. Why? cause i backed it with this cute strawberry fabric.

i like that polka dot fabric in the 9patch...it reminds me of the dress Julia Roberts wore in 'Pretty Woman' at the polo match.

then there's this little guy...it's probably older than both the previous tops. it's another one of those i-wonder-what-if quilts. didn't exactly come out like i thought, so i tried a new idea for quilting that i have seen- dense straight lines.

now this one came out fine! it's a flimsy inspired by a book that i helped quilt some samples for, but wasn't needed in the book itself.

mmmm, pebbles...

the other one is a gift that can't be shared just yet... *shhhh*

so 5 tops made the permanent move from flimsy on a hanger to a quilt folded on the shelf!!

now you'll have to excuse me, i have a crapload of binding to do.

the last stitch

i have had this vintage quilt for years!! i bought it a llllloooonnnggg time ago from Ebay back before vintage tops could be sold for millions of dollars :) i think i paid around $40 for it.

out of all my vintage tops, this would be a top contender of a favorite. it sat in my cabinet patiently waiting for me to build my LAing skills to quilt it. then, i was stumped. what to do? it's not traditional and i couldn't make feathers look good....

so a couple days before my bday, at three in the morning (isn't that the prime time for all great creative sparks?) i knew how i was going to quilt it!!

i loaded it and treated my self a day 'off' from client quilting to quilt my little favorite green vintage find....

it will get to decorate a prominent wall in the house.

i like to think the piecer is up in her heavenly studio and is nodding her approval at her quilt finally being finished.

quilt parade

these are the quilts i have finished in the last couple months...enjoy!

tracey's comission quilt
check out that teal thread on that black border *zinger*
anne's teal irish chain

this was the quilt in this post...
i like the print for the center of the setting blocks. i've filed that away for future reference!
and as usual, edie was busy!

her black and white TAW

like the skinny turquoise border. she said she was binding it in the same color! perfect with that border print!
she also made this quilt with that stained glass collection with the panel as the center...
it's hard to see, but there's loops on there

and finally edie made TWO of these army themed quilts for her sons
i quilted stars in the block's negative space and swirly lines to mimic a flag in the wind. it turned out better than i could of hoped and edie LOVED it!!

see, two...hey, whose legs are those?? :)

that skinny orange border was a 'flange' and since i was doing a E2E, it got stitched it down...

(for the record- i hate flanges on a quilt!! it triples the difficulty of MQing a quilt...i know you didn't ask, but just saying :) )

and look- i marked my stars!! my five pointed stars look horrendous if i don't premark them! they come out looking like amputated starfish...
i quilted shelly's quilt

this is the quilt that had the fabric in it that i wanted....still haven't found it

i also quilted my Bali Migration quilt...

i tested out and idea for the design for Edie's army quilts before quilting hers i'm glad i did- it didn't look like what i had envisioned, so i did something else...and that worked.

so now i have TWO new E2E designs in my repertoire!

check out the backer *swirly*

jeanne's DWR for her daughter's wedding in April

i like the design i came up with...

and the quilting shows on the backer!

last but not least- this quilt. and for the life of me i can't remember who it belongs to...*sigh* they say the mind is the first to go...i can see her face in my head, but i can't see her name...she even brought me cookies!!

KAY..it's kay's quilt!!! *geez*
having fun with feathers!!

keeping with the colors of the quilt- i quilted feathers in blue thread on the red, and feathers in red thread in the border
and it all shows up beautifully on the backer making it almost double sided :)

fyi- all my quilting is done 100% free handed, free motion.
happy new year!!

as i always say- may the best of your 2012 be the worst of your 2013!!

happy stitches

lookie-

guess what!!   GUESS WHAT!!!

GUESS WHAT!!!

i quilted the 9inch wedding quilt!!! i had a couple of days sans davis *frowny face* so i used the opportunity...
it was soooooo much fun to quilt. i custom quilted each block. i lost count of the thread changes....

now to sew on the binding....

UFO serial killer

i finished another UFO....i'm telling you since i set up my featherweight upstairs, i am cranking out the flimsies!!

this Goose chase quilt was a bit of inspired genuis! i was cruising blogland and saw Sarah's wild goose chase quilt and that reminded me that long ago, my Footnotes quilt originally had a flying goose sashing (which was vetoed in favor of the zebra print) and i wondered if i could use my sashing geese to make a goose chase quilt....

so i dug the plastic tub that helds all that, and by golly, the math worked perfectly!! i added some warmer batiks and off to the 'chase' i went...

so i finished up the flimsy this afternoon. I'm calling "Bali Migration"

and i wanted to share an observation. while finishing up all these UFOs, i'm finding some that i started before i sized/starched my fabrics, and let me tell ya, it makes a HUGE difference. so if you are an anti-starcher, may i try to convince you to start??

stitchin' away...

i worked on some quilts to be published in a book, so i can't share pictures til after the book is released...

but i did stick one of my own quilts on the frame couple weeks ago.

this is a jelly roll quilt (aka 1600 quilt) that i made from strips cut from my dog fabric stash. i can't believe i'm getting ready to admit this, but i cut 80 strips with no repeats *eek* and those are just the 'smaller' scale prints...i cut my WOF strips in half cause some of my strips were cut from FQs for a total of approximately (158) 20" x 2.5inch strips.

so basically, i used two jelly rolls worth of strips and here's the math: the strips go up and down instead of across, so all my dogs are going sideways *shrug* doesn't bother me....the finished top was 64" x 103" and i could of sewn one more 'lap' that would of made it about the same size and all my dogs would of been right-side up with my strips running right to left. i felt lazy and just chopped 20inches off the bottom and added my borders...finished quilt size 83 x 98 inches.

the outer border needed to be pieced, and since it was a larger scale i didn't want floating chopped off dog fronts and backs across the seam. i had a genius moment and pieced in a matchy paw print. i think it solves that problem quite well...

i named it 'dog days of summer' and there's my cute label...i love piecing my labels into the back and quilting over them.

and to change the subject- i've been very good with my goal of finishing up some of my UFOs this past year, and have been looking to start a few new future UFOs :)  i laid out all my african wax prints that i've been collecting and i think i'm ready to start cutting in to them. i was thinking i might make some really big granny squares with them paired with a black background...whatcha think?

while i was snapping pictures of my fabric, look where Petal hung out. such a sweetie....

reminds me of this picture...

speaking of petal, i have news- she will be chauffeured north to Salem, Massachusetts on Tuesday. so, we will be saying goodbye (barney will be saying 'good riddance') to our house guest.

(yes i'm in PJs- it's just one perk of working from home :) )

inner child

i got a large box in the mail today....?? i didn't order anything

due to the crappy packing, i could peek inside and i knew instantly what it was!!

*big smile*
davis ordered me a nemo plushie!

a BIG nemo plushie!

(shark bait, ew ah ah)
it's almost as big as barney....what am i saying, it is as big as barney

in my excitement, i had to do some changes on the bed so i could see what it might look like....

quilt, pillowcases, and plushie

*squee*

i totally indulge my inner child... if i don't, she keeps me up at night

don't judge me, i know i'm weird...

tah-done!

'South Beach' is a quilt!!

i have the binding made, but i'll wait to sew it on, it's too hot to tackle it right now....

*note* i only allow barney on my quilts....
