Image: Exceptional case: Giovanni Ciardi, with partner Bruno Paoli, is pregnant at 54

MAY 2010 - A 54-year-old Italian woman has amazed doctors and herself by falling pregnant naturally.

Hospital worker Giovanni Ciardi is one of only a handful of women to have become pregnant without medical treatment in their 50s.

Doctors have described her as an exceptional case.

Mrs. Ciardi is 15 weeks pregnant.

She is due to give birth to a girl in November - by which time she will be 55 years old.

She already has a 23-year-old daughter called Veronica through her first marriage.

Mrs Ciardi said: Back in January I missed a period and I thought well my menopause must have arrived but when I began to feel nausea and have an upset tummy I went to the doctor.

He just smiled and said: "Your symptoms have nothing to do with the menopause - you're pregnant.

Girl Walks into a Bar...: Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle
by Rachel Dratch

-- Her career at a low point, Rachel Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog-sitting, learning Spanish - and dating.

After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

Resigned to childlessness but still hoping for romance, Dratch was out for drinks with a friend when she met John.

Handsome and funny, after only six months of dating long-distance, he became the inadvertent father of her wholly unplanned, undreamed-of child, and moved to New York to be a dad.

With riotous humor, Dratch recounts breaking the news to her bewildered parents, the awe of her single friends, and the awkwardness of a baby-care class where the instructor kept tossing out the f-word.

Filled with great behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Dratch's time on SNL, Girl Walks into a Bar is a refreshing version of the happily ever after story that proves female comics - like bestsellers Tina Fey and Chelsea Handler - are truly having their moment.

Maria did not have any reproductive treatment to fall pregnant and her doctor Stefano Palmieri described her pregnancy as peaceful.

Many of the spontaneous conceptions after age 45 result in multiple births.

Take Arcelia Garcia for example -- triplets at age 54 in 2000. Natural conceptions.

Also in 2000, a 53-year-old gave birth to twins (natural conceptions), her story was a bit eclipsed by Mrs. Garcia's however.

I just read on a site a 50-year-old woman is nine weeks pregnant after doing an IVF (in vitro fertilization).

This was in Europe, no donor eggs were used, and the parents-to-be are just delirious.

She got pregnant on her very first try.

She got married when she was 45 years old.

She wanted kids as soon as she did get married, but never thought about alternative treatments.

~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~
Because of her poor responses to ovarian stimulation, inferior oocyte grading and prohibition of donor oocyte usage in Japan, the couple decided to discontinue further IVF treatment at age 48 years, 10 months.
One and one-half years later, at age 50 years, 3 months she presented to our clinic eight weeks pregnant.
At term she delivered vaginally a 2740 gram healthy infant at 38 weeks gestation; Apgar scores were 9 and 10.
Ordinary Miracles: A Journey through Primary and Secondary Infertility
by Krissi Marie McVicker
-- We had trouble conceiving and it was shocking news. When we found out that in-vitro fertilization would most likely be our only chance for success, our anxiety grew. But, with the help of my husband's amazing insurance, after three cycles, we were able to have our daughter, Ella.
And after three more cycles, our twins Logan and Mia graced us with their presence and we were truly blessed. I know that we were one of the lucky couples. Many people can't afford one IVF cycle, let alone six. And, I've never taken that for granted.
After my daughter was born, I started writing Ordinary Miracles. I wanted to share my story with others because I remember hearing success stories when I was in the midst of my struggle and it inspired me to believe that if it could happen to them, maybe, it would happen for me too.
After my twins were born, I started my blog: Stress-Free Infertility. I wanted a place on the Internet where couples could go to and read about others, get solicited advice, and be inspired by other success stories; a place to ease the stress of infertility, at least a little bit.
We shouldn't be making assumptions that every older mother did donor egg, nor should we put too much hope in stories of much older women conceiving with their own eggs.
Look at the trends, and make your own decision about how long you want to fight the trend by trying with your own eggs, vs. deciding the time has come to accept the odds are just so stacked against you that you must move on to other alternatives.
Remember, too, that is really is not all age related. I apparently lost my egg quality in my late 20s, as do some women. Others retain their fertility into their 50s.
An Israeli RE [reproductive endocrinologist] named Neri Laufer just discovered a gene in certain women which corresponds to later fertility. He was fascinated by the number of older pregnant women coming into the hospital for delivery.
You can google his name if you want to read about it. His group included women up into their early 50's. So much for any stats showing that NO women conceive in this age group!
For those who just can't let go of the belief all pregnant women over 45 must have used donor eggs, consider the population Laufer studied. These were mostly, if not all, ultra-religious women for whom DE [donor eggs] would have been prohibited.
Imagine you have ten kids already, you're living on government assistance and still exist below the poverty line, donor egg is not offered in your country, and your religious leader forbids the procedure anyway.
Now you tell me -- all these women secretly squirreled away thousands of dollars, disappeared from their communities for a couple of weeks to go to the Ukraine, defied their religious teachings, all in an effort to get pregnant with baby #11? Use your common sense!
The same can be applied to the Native American women living on reservations. Many have a lot of kids already and can't afford groceries let alone donor egg IVF cycles. The problem with middle and upper-class American women like us is we think we are representative of every group (and our RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] promote that thinking too because they are victims of the same egocentric system).
If it becomes impossible for US to conceive after age 43, well, then, that must be true of everyone. Only it's not true. It's really not even true for our demographic.
RE's choose to present certain information based on the context. When they are counseling a 40 yr old with high FSH [follicle stimulating hormone] about her treatment options, of course they are going to highlight fertility trends in the general population and the success rates of certain treatment options because this is what is relevant to her. The goal is to get her a baby, not turn her into a rare statistic.
She has to make an informed decision based on medical facts as to what will give her the best odds of success. After age 40 and with high FSH, that's donor egg.
But if you ask that same doctor in another context, say, a conversational context, about much older women conceiving, he will concede yes, it is absolutely possible and does happen, though not as often as we would like.
If your doctor subscribes to the notion no women get pregnant naturally after 45, then your doctor is an idiot and you should get another doctor -- it means they are not up on basic information in their field.
A grandmother looks set to enter the record books as Britain's oldest mother following the birth of a baby boy 35 years after her first child.
Welsh farmer Elizabeth Buttle, whose maiden name is Espley, is believed to be 60 years old.
If correct, the miracle mum's age would beat the previous record birth by five years.
Checks by one British news agency at the Family Records Centre in London revealed an Elizabeth Espley was born early in 1937 in the Chester area.
Further checks revealed no-one by the same name was born between 1937 and late 1945.
No fertility drugs
Twice-married Mrs. Buttle, whose eldest grandson is 19, gave birth to new arrival Joseph David by Caesarian section at West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen eight weeks ago.
The mother, who lives on her farm in the west Wales village of Cwmann, near Lampeter, became pregnant without the use of fertility drugs by her partner Peter Rawston, 56.
Talking about baby Joseph, Elizabeth says: He is my little miracle and he makes me feel like a young woman again. I feel perfectly well and I don't know what the fuss is about.
There were no complications and the hospital staff were absolutely marvelous.
Baby was not planned
A widow with three grandchildren, Mrs. Buttle had a daughter in 1962 with her late husband Tom, who died 10 years ago.
New arrival Joseph, described by his mother as a lovely, healthy little lad, was born slightly premature.
Elizabeth, who celebrates her birthday next month, said although the baby was not planned, she and her partner had taken no precautions to avoid the pregnancy.
Kathleen Campbell, of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, is entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest woman in the UK to give birth at the age of 55 in 1987.
Rewinding Your Biological Clock is a unique exploration of each of these issues, especially the "how-to" of peri- and post-menopausal pregnancy.
January 24, 2000 - When 54-year-old Arcelia Garcia began feeling tired last summer, she was running a schedule that would have put a woman half her age to shame.
Yet she was troubled enough by her unexpected fatigue to take time out to visit her doctor.
Boy, was she in for a surprise. Not only was Garcia two months pregnant—she was carrying triplets.
The news came like a bright star, says Garcia, whose other children range in age from 16 to 35.
To have a child is so wonderful; you never feel like you're too old.
Her pregnancy stunned fertility experts for two reasons: The average age of menopause is 51, and triplets occur in just one of every 8,000 pregnancies.
The probability of someone over 50 having triplets is one in a million, says Dr. Larry Shields, a perinatal specialist at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Hello all, My name is Lisa, and I am 55 years old.
I needed to join this board because I really hope to be an inspiration for women trying to conceive at later ages.
Two weeks ago, I found out I am expecting my sixth child, and I am now at 8 weeks pregnant.
I went in to see my doctor because I had not been feeling well.
I was getting frequent headaches and lower back pain, along with some queasiness.
So I went in to make sure things were OK, and my doctor told me I was actually expecting!
I will be 56 years old when this baby is born, and I do plan to have a natural birth.
I have four older children - ages 17, 23, 26, and 28 years old - and I also have a five-year-old.
My five-year-old was actually planned, born when I was 50 years old.
My husband and I had wanted one more little one.
But I guess she was not supposed to be the last!
I also have two grandchildren.
My 28-year-old daughter has a four-year-old, and she and I were both preggo around the same time, which was pretty exciting.
And my 26-year-old son has a three-year-old.
So I am a grandmother as well.
I have seen a few others on this board expecting after 50, and I hope if anyone out there is trying to conceive at an older age, they do not give up!
And congrats to all the expectant mothers out there!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Congrats on your new found pregnancy!
I am also in my fifties (54 years old), and expecting my fourth baby in late July.
I have a 16-year-old, a 20-year-old and a 26-year-old.
And I too have two grandchildren!
It's is always exciting to hear stories I can relate to, and hopefully, be an encouragement!
I wish you all luck, and I will keep you in my prayers!
I am sure you've heard the term menopause baby.
Women in their 50s, who think they are no longer fertile, and skip using birth control, sometimes find out the hard way they are still more than capable of becoming pregnant.
While it is true your risk of becoming pregnant declines each year as you move towards menopause, there's always a chance you still can get pregnant.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

During peri-menopause, a woman can still get pregnant.

As such, the term menopause baby is a misnomer, since a woman who is truly in menopause has already lost her fertility.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dr. Hillard: You are, technically, still fertile until one year after your last menstrual period (which incidentally, you don't know is your last until it's been a year! CATCH 22).
Many of us have heard about the menopause baby our mother/grandmother/great aunt or other family member thought was the change of life and turned out to be pregnancy, with all of its life changes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My mother was a menopause baby.

My grandmother had her when she was 47 years old, and my grandfather was 50 years old, in 1931.

She had three other children aged 21, 19, and 10 years old.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am sure a lot of people will be asking, Is it possible for a 49-year-old menopausal woman to get pregnant?
Yes, it is, said Direk Maryo. I am a menopause baby.
My mother was 49 years old when she had me.
My baby screamed whenever the stroller stopped rocking, and the early miseries of a cold pounded in my head.
I am 54 years old and suffering the delirious consequences of weaning a baby and being one of the first Western journalists to visit Naypyidaw, the new capital city of the military dictatorship that has held the Nobel Peace Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest for much of the past 18 years.
June 18, 2009 - Even if the two digits - 54 - were reversed, Sarajean Grainson would be considered an older mom.
But she'll turn 54 years old in July, and last month the Valley Stream woman gave birth to fraternal twins Matthew and David.
It's not so shocking anymore for a woman in her 50s to have a newborn.
But the Grainson clan gathered for a news conference Thursday at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where the twins were born because Grainson said she wanted to inspire women not to give up on the dream of carrying a baby.
I want women to know there is no biological clock. . . . It's not ticking anymore, Grainson said.
A doctor brought Grainson out of menopause and combined donor eggs with her husband's sperm.
Grainson plans to stay home full-time; she joked while other women jump from planes or go to the Caribbean in retirement, she'll joyfully spend hers raising children.
July 4, 1932 - Having given birth to her first child at 55 years and 69 days, Mrs. Mary Higgins of Cord, Ireland bids fair to win the prize offered by a London newspaper for information as to the oldest mother in the last 20 years.
Thus far, the runner-up is Mrs. Elizabeth Pierce of Bitterne, Southampton, whose youngest child was born when she was 54 years and 40 days.
The paper calls attention to an old announcement in the Royal Cornwall Gazette of January 2, 1819, reporting the birth of twins on Christmas Eve, to Mrs. George Saunders, wife of a London shoemaker in her 59th year.
Photo credit: © CEN dailymail.co.uk - All rights reserved
A woman has been hailed a hero after details of her astonishing work with abandoned children has emerged.
The whole thing started when she was 48 years old and found the first baby, a little girl when she was out collecting rubbish.
The baby was just lying amongst the junk on the street, abandoned. The baby would have died had the woman not rescued her and taken her in.
Lou Xiaoying, now 88 years old and suffering from kidney failure, found and raised more than 30 abandoned Chinese babies from the streets of Jinhua, in the eastern Zhejiang province where she managed to make a living by recycling rubbish.
She and her late husband Li Zin, who died 17 years ago, kept four of the children and passed the others onto friends and family to start new lives.
Her youngest son Zhang Qilin - now aged just seven years old - was found in a dustbin by Lou when she was 82 years old.
Even though I was already getting old I could not simply ignore the baby and leave him to die in the trash. He looked so sweet and so needy. I had to take him home with me, she said.
I took him back to our home, which is a very small modest house in the countryside and nursed him to health. He is now a thriving little boy, who is happy and healthy.
I married my husband on June 2nd.
On September 3rd, I got pregnant - after 17 years of being told I would never be able to get pregnant.
Well, the doctors were Oh, so wrong!
We did not want to have more children.
Well, let's face it, our children are raised - they were all grown up.
My husband has five daughters, and I have a son and two daughters.
After the shock of hearing the words You are pregnant, my husband almost passed out - LOL!
(Now it's funny).
We have gotten used to it, and are now very happy.
My husband said he wanted a boy!
He is 51 years old, and I was 43 years old when we found out.
I am now 44 years old.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am 45 years old, and 12 weeks pregnant with baby number six right now.

There are several of us over 40 years old and pregnant in the other areas of this forum.

I have been pleasantly surprised this time - I have not had ONE person say anything at all to me about my age.

Well, with the exception of one weirdo at church yesterday, but I will not include her here.

The doctor never said a word, my midwife didn't even ask my age.

My 70-year-old mom never said a word!!

It's not such a biggie anymore... really!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This over 40 years old section has had a lot of grads...
Did Terryann confirm her latest pregnancy yet?
If so, it's Terryann (46 years old), Csmiles (45 years old), Angushicks, Teeroze, Cagardengirl (all 44 years old), Typinggirl, Loulou, Heatherv8, Mely, Issacsmommy (all41 years old), who have BFPs [big fat positive - positive pregnancy test].
It's a good ratio for over 40s.
If you run into others who are pregnant over 40, send'em over here to give us more inspiration.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You never do know...

I know two women who got pregnant at 54 years old.

The second one was the new wife of a friend of my parents'.

The groom/father-to-be was 70-something.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thought I'd share...
I was at our son's baseball game last night and was talking with another mom.
Her daughter just got married last summer, and sadly she had a miscarriage at Christmas time.
Her daughter's hubby is 25 years old.
Hubby's mom is pregnant!!
She is 46 years old, but will be 47 years old when her baby is born!
Her youngest child is 14 years old.
The mom who was sharing also told me of a lady at her church who was 46 years old and just had another baby...
