Dremel Design

Power tools….. bloggers usually love some power tools and most people think of power tools as largish, as in circular saws, drills, etc.  Today I am talking about a power tool that should be in your arsenal…..for design and  for fun! The Dremel multitasking tool.

I found a wood changing table at the thrift store and then was able to score two very old bar stools from a house around the corner from my shop.
This how I found them…..

And this is how they came together to form a fun partnership!

I removed all of the seat padding and then glued and screwed the changing table to the stools after I  sanded and spray painted the stools so they looked fresh. And although I liked the overall look, it needed something. So I made a triangle template, outlined them and then used my Dremel tool to score the top of the wood. I used the smallest burr that comes with the set and it was easy. I just took my time and made sure that I was going the same depth and keeping my lines straight.

Here she is all shaped up. This only took me about 30 minutes to complete but it added a unique and modern touch to this industrial marriage of found objects.  The girl who purchased it saw it at a night market I did in Downtown Pittsburgh. She didn't purchase it that night but called me 2 days later and said she couldn't stop thinking about it and could she come to the shop to buy it? Of course!

I love it when people fall in love with something that I have created. I know I preach think of ways to use something in a different way. Well now you can think of the Dremel in a new way…..I think I'll be seeing triangles on more things!!

Island Dream Chairs!

Please sign up for the newsletter, on the right there, to get all of the shop event information, holiday sales, and upcoming fun times!

My client, Sarah, who had me paint her dresser a beautiful teally-turquoise, wanted her four Craigslist score chairs to match so I got working on those over the holidays.
This paint color is called Island Dream by Behr and it is in the Marquee line. Because these chairs had so many surfaces, it would have taken forever to paint these by hand so instead I used my Home Right Finish Max Pro paint sprayer.
I can honestly say this is the easiest sprayer I have used. Not only does the sprayer lay down a great coat of paint, it does not have a steep learning curve and it is beyond easy to clean up!  Both things are necessary for a power tool to be kept in my arsenal.

I cleaned and sanded them first and then primed them with grey primer to help with easier coverage. I know most people say you can just paint on chalk paint but I am not a heavy distresser and I take a lot of time with my finishes so I want them to last. Hence I clean and sand every time to ensure greater durability….especially for something like a dining room chair that will have high traffic.

I made my own chalk paint mix and used the sprayer with no problems. You just have to thin it a bit and it goes on great! I then added Minwax Dark Walnut stain over the paint to match the finish on the dresser and added a topcoat as the finisher.

I think they came out great .

Sarah was sweet enough to send me some photos of all the pieces in her condo and I love how it all looks together.

Island Dream might be my new favorite teally turquoise but now I can't wait to show you my new favorite RED!
Stay tuned!

Do you feel a draft?

Haven't signed up yet for mailing list? Please do so by adding your email just to your right on the sidebar….see it? Good. Now you'll be in on all the latest and greatest happenings at the Workshop!
I only mail them out once or twice a month so no worries about floods of mail, just goodness right into your inbox!

As we have been cleaning out the house we bought to flip, we have been blessed with loads of goodies. The house was left pretty packed full. I nabbed this child's drafting table and decided to give it a new life as an occasional table.

Now before I came up with this idea I thought it would be all cool to do this…

Not sure I'm loving the gold....yes or no

until saw the error of my ways…fatal mistakes we do make on occasion.
Can you say bad Chinese art???
Back to the drawing board.
So after I gave it another even more vigorous sanding I
taped off my lines where I wanted to stain. I was going for a faux inlaid wood look.  Now I am going to let you in on a little secret about how to get this look with stain. You need to use an X-Acto knife and score along the taped edge and then use a credit card to really seal the edge. When you think it is sealed well, do it again just to be sure.

Use wood conditioner on the areas to be stained and then stain it the colors that you want.

Once dry I gave it two coats of Polycrylic and off to the Flea she went.  The nice thing about drafting tables is they fold up so compact as you can see in the above photos. So you can pull it out when you need it for extra serving space or a little backyard bistro table and then it stores in only about 5 inches of space and looks pretty while doing it! Plus I love that it has a little industrial edge to it. You know I likes me a cocktail of wood and metal!
I am happy to say it found a home pretty quick and now I am slightly addicted to these folding tables!
I found another folding table, not a drafting but still awesome, at the thrift store and am working on another faux inlaid look for ya'!

Would you use a drafting table as anything other than to draft?
What kind of tables do you use to add extra space when needed?
Please tell, I might need to gets me some!
