I put Middle Earth Journal in hiatus in May of 2008 and moved to Newshoggers.
I temporarily reopened Middle Earth Journal when Newshoggers shut it's doors but I was invited to Participate at The Moderate Voice so Middle Earth Journal is once again in hiatus.

Excuse me!

I don't understand this:
Lieberman Has “Superdelegate” Status Stripped Because of McCain Endorsement
Lieberman's endorsement of Republican John McCain disqualifies him as a super-delegate to the Democratic National Convention under what is informally known as the Zell Miller rule, according to Democratic State Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo.
OK, I don't understand - wasn't the fact that Lieberman is no longer a Democrat enough to disqualify him?

What am I missing here?

The alternate universe of Bill Kristol

Just how strange is the alternate universe of Bill Kristol? He thinks that Joe Lieberman as the Vice Presidential Candidate would save the Republicans is 2008. Eunomia explains just how idiotic this is.
What Kristol proposes is that nominating Lieberman would create the conditions for such a massive victory for the Republicans, when the woes of the latter are closely tied to the foreign policy decisions that constitute the chief reason why Kristol admires Lieberman and thinks he should be a VP nominee. In short, the very things that make Lieberman attractive to interventionists in the GOP are the things that make the rest of us want to run screaming from the room. Adding Lieberman to a ticket that already included a candidate who blathers about ”Islamofascism” or takes an ueber-hawkish line on Iran would be the closest thing to a deliberate act of self-destruction by a party that we would have ever seen.

Lieberman Rumors

I had heard this on Thom Hartmann this morning and I did pay much attention to it.
Lieberman as next Attorney General?
That's what Marjorie Cohn is saying on The Thom Hartmann Show. The talk started a few hours ago, from what they're saying. (not that it didn't occur to any of us earlier, but it's going around now) Per Cohn:
  • It would stop the Senate investigations dead in their tracks.
  • It would guarantee a Senate confirmation.
  • It would change the balance of power in the Senate, in favor of the Republicans.
  • And it smells of Karl Rove.
I didn't really pay that much attention to it because while it would be a plus for the Bush administration I really can't see Lieberman giving up another five and half years in the Senate for 16 months as AG.

GOTTALAFF has another rumor I have heard before that while it's crazier might make more sense.
This came up much later in the show. The next scary thought, after Lieberman's new AG status, was that Cheney would resign from the VPresidency (health issues, of course) at some point, and Lieberman would be brought in. That would set him up for a run for President.
Yes it's far-fetched, as Hartmann acknowledged. But we've all been floored by every other seemingly impossible scenario that this insane bunch has brought to fruition.
Yes this has pluses for Lieberman and the Bush administration. Joe is a poor Cheney Clone and would fit right in. The Rethuglicans are not too happy with any of their choices for president at the moment and Joe's ego might be just inflated enough to make him feel he could win.

Make My Day Joe

Go ahead and do it Joe - you steaming pile of AIPIC horse shit.
Lieberman may back Republican in '08 race
HARTFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an independent who supports Democrats in Congress despite his backing of the Iraq war, said on Thursday he was not ruling out endorsing a Republican in the White House race.
Support a losing candidate and officially become part of a party and a movement that will be in the minority for a generation. Do it Joe - Make my day!

The criminally insane

Well there can be very little doubt now that Joe Lieberman has joined the ranks of the criminally insane neocons, likudniks and Cheneyites.
Lieberman: Bomb Iran If It Doesn't Stop
The United States should launch military strikes against Iran if the government in Tehran does not stop supplying anti-American forces in Iraq, Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday on Face The Nation.

"I think we've got to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq," Lieberman told Bob Schieffer. "And to me, that would include a strike into... over the border into Iran, where we have good evidence that they have a base at which they are training these people coming back into Iraq to kill our soldiers."
I suppose that's the same "good evidence" that told us Iraq was floating in WMD and had reconstituted it's nuclear program.
Just a little war!
The Indepedent former Democrat from Connecticut said that he was not calling for an invasion of Iran, but he did say the U.S. should target specific training camps.

"I think you could probably do a lot of it from the air, but they can't believe that they have immunity for training and equipping people to come in and kill Americans," Lieberman said.
And of course there is more "good evidence".
He said that he has seen evidence that the Iranians are supplying insurgents and foreign fighters in Iraq.

"By some estimates, they have killed as many as 200 American soldiers," he said.
Joe Gandelman wonders if the is just Lieberman shooting of his mouth or......
But the question becomes: is this just Lieberman (who is already being lambasted by many on the left for his pro-war and on foreign issues pro-Bush administration stances) giving an opinion off the top of his head? Or is he echoing a viable foreign policy option being discussed in the administration.

There are two reasons to wonder:

(1) Lieberman has strong ties to the administration, particularly to its foreign policy formulators.

(2) The Israel-based website Debka recently reported that Syrian and Iranian generals were talking to each other in preparation for what they believe will be a U.S. attack.
And this from my friend and blogging partner The Gun Toting Liberal.
Despite the fact the United States and Iranian governments have recently engaged in the first diplomatic talks with each other in almost three decades, Senator Joe Lieberman joins Vice President Richard “Dick” Cheney in calling for military attacks against Iranian targets. This serves to clearly demonstrate exactly why neither man belongs in a leadership position of any sort in our Government despite the fact that one of them currently presides over the U.S. Senate while the other one came dangerously close in the 2000 race for the Oval Office.
Yes, we should be very afraid as long as the criminally insane are calling the shots. Joe Lieberman is joined at the hip with the Dark Lord himself.

Update
My friend Cernig has a must read post, as usual.

Joe's Marvelous Adventure

After a brief stroll through the streets of Baghdad Joe Lieberman sees progress that the troops that are there 24 hours a day can't see.
Lieberman talks to troops in Baghdad
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Spc. David Williams, 22, of Boston, Mass., had two note cards in his pocket Wednesday afternoon as he waited for Sen. Joseph Lieberman. Williams serves in the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, N.C., the first of the five "surge" brigades to arrive in Iraq, and he was chosen to join the Independent from Connecticut for lunch at a U.S. field base in Baghdad.

The night before, 30 other soldiers crowded around him with questions for the senator.

He wrote them all down. At the top of his note card was the question he got from nearly every one of his fellow soldiers:

"When are we going to get out of here?"
Yes Lieberman sees progress but what do the troops see?
Next to him, Spc. Will Hedin, 21, of Chester, Conn., thought about what he was going to say.

"We're not making any progress," Hedin said, as he recalled a comrade who was shot by a sniper last week. "It just seems like we drive around and wait to get shot at."

[....]

Spc. Kevin Krasco, 20, of Medford, Mass., and Spc. Kevin Adams, 20, of Moosup, Conn., chimed in with their dismay before turning the conversation to baseball.

"It's like everything else in this war," Adams said, referring to Baghdad. "It hasn't changed."
But of course Joe doesn't see it that way. After a brief shopping trip surrounded by troops and wearing a flack jacket saw lots of improvement. Joe is just a delusional and brain dead as Bush himself.

Good Bye Joe

Lieberman Says War Vote Could Prompt Party Switch
The majority in the Senate is not worth having to put up with Joe Lieberman's bull shit. Jump Joe jump, we don't want you and never did. The only reason you caucused with the Dems was you thought you could black mail them. We don't like slimy political hacks and we like black mailers even less. The Democratic tent is big but not big enough for neocons and PNAC lunatics. So do it Joe, the sooner the better. And while you are at it make it official, announce you are a member of the Likud Party. Joe Lieberman, Likud, Connecticut; sounds like it rings true to me.
Update
In the comments section shirt makes this excellent point.
And what do we lose? The republicans will again regain the Senate and complete ownership of the war in the eyes of the public! Currently, the public thinks the dems can do something about the war and that just isn't the case. I'm not to woried about senate commitees: they'll be more than balanced by the house.
I would add that since the Senate Republicans will own it they will be much more likely to go against Bush/Cheney and do something about it. Joe's switching sides will be a plus for everyone but Joe.

Update 2
David Sirota has more on the positives if Lieberman should jump.
