Mondays with May: Inspired by Tim Holtz!

Greetings friends! It's May Flaum here, and this week I'm pulling out my Tim Holtz stash of supplies to create a 12x12 scrapbook layout!
It seems like so often my Tim Holtz stash gets used for cards, tags, and canvas creations but the truth is I really love how much fun many of his products are for scrapbooking! From the tissue to the rub-ons, letters to tags - I had a blast making this page. Here are some process shots so you can see how it all came together:
What to do with those tricky surfaces that won't stick? Just staple, use brads, or stitch!
I love painting these new Tim Holtz letters. So ornate and perfect for some Disney fun.
Now we're getting somewhere! As you see above, my letters were really blue. So I used some sand paper and scrubbed off a bit of color on my finished project.

Below, I'm using my tarnished  brass distress paint with my gears blueprint stamp to create some funky magic as an accent. You can also see I've stitched my photos to the tissue so I can be sure that they'll really stick.
For contrast and added detail, I also added in some number rub-ons. The great thing about these is that I'm able to rub without cutting out or worrying about parts I don't want to stick to attach themselves. They are super easy to use.
Some more glue, a bit of metal, and before you know it I had a finished page with lots of funky detail.
 Supplies Used:

I also want to mention that I am absolutely in love with the new Shattered cardstock by Tim. It is the cardstock I used on this page, and I love the pre-aged look of it! This layout reminds me to scrapbook more often with Tim Holtz, and in fact it's inspired a pink project that you can find over on my blog today. That's not all you'll find either - I also have a special (limited time!) special offer up today too.

Blueprint Birthday Card!

Hi Bloggers! Happy Wednesday to you!  I just love this card made by the fabulous and talented Jess Larsen! It's a fun Birthday card with a modern twist on the sentiment.  Below Jess explains her inspiration behind making this card!

One of the products I was most excited about from the last CHA were the Blueprint stamps from the amazing Tim Holtz.  They are graphic, large scale and really unlike anything else on the market! The coloring possibilities with these are endless, but I decided to mix it up using different patterns from the Dear Lizzy 5th and Frolic 6x6 Paper Pad. This pad offers light, muted colors — perfect for Spring. After I cut all of the pieces, I layered them on a piece of Neenah Desert Storm Environmental Cardstock.

With this particular card layout, it was tricky finding a spot to add a sentiment.  Although it definitely would have been fine without one, I thought it would be a fun play on the blueprint concept to add a file tab to the side of the card.  I used this nifty set of three file tab dies from My Favorite Things. Then, I created my own sentiment using the Sally's ABC's set from Lawn Fawn. After a generous sprinkling of Hero Arts gems this card was finished.

Come Sail Away (Selective Embossing)

Hello, all! Kristina here. :)

Today I made a card using a DIY selective embossing diffuser (see another example HERE). Simon Says Stamp sells diffusers by Tim Holtz, but I made my own by cutting a rectangle out of six sheets of cardstock and adhering them together. For more instruction, be sure to watch the video below. And of course, you'll have to experiment with your die cutting machine to get the best die cutting sandwich. Every machine is just ever so slightly different.

I love the detail of both the dry embossing with this folder and the heat embossing with Ranger Super Fine Detail Gold embossing powder and the Come Sail Away stamp set by Kelly Purkey.

The gold embossing with the Navy ink from Hero Arts just screams nautical to me! Love it! And the striped circle from Circle Friends fit right in.

Anyhow, enjoy!

A "Happy Gram" from Tammy Tutterow!

Hi bloggers!!! Happy Wednesday to you! I'm truly pleased to have a Simon Says Stamp Exclusive large tag card with the fantastic Tammy Tutterow!

Here are a few words of inspiration behind the project from the artist:

When I was in school, the school office had yellow notepads with smilie faces on them that said "Happy Grams".  Any time they had good news for you they would send you a note on those yellow note papers.  I remember how fun it was to see an office worker at the door with one in hand and how it was even more fun when it was for you.  I have loved the idea of "Happy Grams" ever since.  Add in a bluebird, a symbol of happiness, a sunshiney sky, and I think you have the perfect combination for a happy "just because" card for a friend.

I made this card combining those two elements along with some of my very favorite crafty things, Tim Holtz Distress, Ranger Ink, and Sizzix.  Just making this card was enough to make me smile!  I love sharing techniques that you can use again and again, not just on this project.  I hope that as you look at my tutorial you will find a technique and an idea or two that will inspire you and give you a few new ideas!

May Flaum Demonstrates MORE Tim Holtz Distress Paint Techniques!

May Flaum here, back with more on the amazing distress paints! I have been having a lot of fun with these amazing paints, and I love that from simple to complex, big and bold to subtle, they really work on a wide variety of projects. To really share how they work and my tips for working with them I've made a video to share with you today:

After making that video I was inspired to gather wood, paper, fabric, and metal to create a project using distress paint on every part of it:
How-to:
1. Blend sapphire and sage distress paints to create the background. Then stamp (with sage) flourishes onto the tag.
2. Adhere a foil sheet to cardstock, then die cut flowers. Emboss these in texture fade and paint with Victorian velvet distress paint. Accent with peeled paint distress paint if desired. Once dry, sand off some so that a bit of metal shows through.
3. For the wood '27' paint the inside with sage, then paint the raised part with sapphire distress paint.
4. Paint the fabric (at the top) with sage distress paint, allow to dry.
5. Assemble the tag and add word stickers, and stamp a bit with archival ink at the edges to finish.

With so many applications, you can bet that distress paints will be a big part of my crafting now! I love the option of having more opaque distress colors that will work (and show up on) even more surfaces than ever before.

New Tim Holtz Paint Preview with May Flaum!!

May Flaum here, and today I'm really excited to do my first post about Tim Holtz Distress Paints and share some initial thoughts with you - and why you may just have to have some! Tim Holtz created a great intro video that you can see on youtube here - but truly you have to see and try these paints to believe them!

First off, above you can see picket fence and picked raspberry on my craft mat ready to go. These dabber-topped paints are more fluid than traditional dabber or acrylic craft paints, but they are opaque and have more body to them than distress stains do.

Above you can see (left to right) distress stain, inks, and paints used in the same colors, onto manila tags. The stains have the most fluid, richest look I think. The ink pads are of course the most blendable, and the paints are just fantastic because while yes, it looks like regular paint it is anything but. It has distress properties and is reactive while wet, but once dry it is set! So while getting water on the stains or inks (once dry) would mean water spots and reactivity, on the paint you can layer other colors and mediums without fear! Once dry - it is set.

I just used the dabber and directly streaked paint onto my tag (above), not necessarily evenly so you can see that you can get a semi-opaque to opaque look with them. They dry matte finish and are very smooth. Distress inks, pens, and other mediums work great right over the top.

As I mentioned before they are reactive with water (and each other) while wet. Above you see some intense marbling of Picked Raspberry and Picket Fence. This was done simply by using the paints then spritzing with water. Pretty cool!

I am already a fan of using these on book or text printed paper as you can get a very soft milky semi-opaque wash look. I'm also a fan of using them for stamping. Just make sure that you spritz your stamp off with water to remove the excess paint when done.

Below you can see a card I created with Victorian Velvet (and water) used to color white cardstock. I also used it on my metal accent (yes, they work on metals and all sorts of surfaces!) on this card, and my 14 stamp is a Tim Holtz Valentine's Blueprint stamp that is embossed with black powder onto book paper.

I really like having this more opaque paint format of distress - it creates a totally different look and I know I will enjoy using the paints on everything from accenting metal embellishments to cards to layouts to mixed media canvas pieces as well.

Now I could always get wild with that marbled pink background I showed you before as well...

Hmm, I may have gotten a bit TOO wild with my paints and blueprint stamps here - but that's ok! I am in that stage of creating with these where I am really getting to know the product and how I can best work with it. I'm a big believer in creative play and letting yourself be free to create and try stuff without pressure.

I can tell you that I'm already a fan, and I'm thrilled that I no longer have to mix my distress stains with white paint to get distress colors of paint! These are so much better, and I think I'll be having a lot of creative fun with them.

Want more ideas, tips, and projects? Well I will be back with another article soon! This was just my introduction to these paints that are now available for pre-order at Simon Says Stamp

Pre-order your favorite colors now! We anticipate to have them in stock sometime between now and mid February.
