J.D. Drew still with back problems

FORT MYERS, Fla. _ The first official day for position players to report is Monday, but all ready J.D. Drew is dealing with back issues. The Sox' right fielder missed 33 games late ilast season with a herniated disk and it didn't get any better during the offseason.

"It's not bad," he said. "It's still pretty stiff. I've fought it all offseason. It's been one of them injuries that has kind of lingered. I've been able to hit, run and all that stuff, but some days I wake up stiff and some days it doesn't seem to be too bad. I'm in the maintenance stages and worked during the offseason to keep it strong. Everything is well enough to play. I just need to isolate it and try to keep it from flaring up too bad."

He had a MRI taken after the season was over. He said Sunday afternoon the herniated disk is causing the stiffness. click here to read ProJo story

J.D. Drew has herniated disk

August 22, 2008. TORONTO -- The Red Sox received an unpleasant surprise Friday afternoon when they learned outfielder J.D. Drew is suffering from a herniated disc in his back.
Drew has suffered from chronic back pain throughout his career and had a flareup last Sunday at Fenway Park against Toronto. He missed all three games of a series in Baltimore earlier this week, but it was thought he'd be able to return to action Friday night here in the opener of a weekend set against the Blue Jays.

The original lineup had Drew in right field, but he was scratched soon after the clubhouse opened. He was sent to a local hospital for an MRI, where it was learned he had a herniated disc.
"I hope I won't have to go on the disabled list," said Drew, who said he felt good Thursday and thought he'd be able to play Friday. On Friday morning he was a little stiff and took a hot bath in attempt to loosen the stiffness. After the bath his back locked up, and Drew said he felt "progressively worse" during the day. He was having difficulty walking in the locker room.
There's no word on how long he'll be sidelined.

The problem is similar to an injury he had earlier in his career with the Cardinals. While in St. Louis, Drew tore the sheath three-quarters of the way around his spine in the same area where he now has the herniated disc. The Red Sox are expecting a full medical report sometime Friday evening.

Tough Week ahead for Sox

Hopefully, it'll be a tougher week for the Tampa Bay Rays and the N.Y. Yankees.

The Red Sox have come to a critical juncture this coming week. Having tail-spinned into second place, 1/2 game behind the Rays and 5 games ahead of the week, the Red Sox are in what amounts to must-win situations. They Rays just will not go away and apparently, they are for real. The Yankees are close behind and making a run at the Red Sox, who will play 4 important games in Yankee Stadium

Monday's matchup:

Boston Red Sox (50-34) at Tampa Bay Rays (49-32) .... Rookie Justin Masterson (4-1 3.43) goes up against James Shields (5-5 3.76) for the Rays. Big Papi is still on the DL, where it looks like he will remain until after the All Star break. Pedroia is smokin, J. D. Drew has done a great job taking Ortiz' place in the 3 spot and has had a great month...Youk has been hot at times. Manny has cooled off the past couple weeks, but he put one out today and our pitching staff is okay at times, middle relief being the big problem right now.

J.D. Drew's 4 hits helps down Phils 7-4

June 18, 2008 PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Eleven years later, J.D. Drew gets the same welcome whenever he visits the City of Brotherly Love: "Booooooo!" The jeers only got louder each time he got a hit.

Drew tied a career high with four hits and fell a triple short of the cycle, Justin Masterson pitched five effective innings and the Red Sox downed the Phillies 7-4 on Wednesday.
Booed each time he came up, Drew hit a three-run homer in the first inning, doubled in the third, had an RBI single in the fourth and singled in the sixth before tapping out in the eighth. He finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Drew has been vilified in Philadelphia since refusing to sign with the Phillies after they drafted him with the second overall pick in the 1997 amateur draft. Now with his fourth different team, the rude treatment hasn't changed. Drew even had to dodge batteries thrown from the stands the first time he came to Philly with St. Louis in 1999.
"They're not going to forget, I know that much," Drew said. "It's always one of those situations where you go out there and battle and you're going to hear things that you don't normally hear at other parks. It makes it fun."

Masterson (4-1) allowed two runs and four hits in the shortest of his six career starts. Jonathan Papelbon, the fourth Boston reliever, pitched a perfect ninth for his 21st save in 24 chances.
