1972 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:
  40
Card Size:  3 1/4" x 5 1/2"
Description:  As was the case with all Phillies photo cards issued throughout the 1970s, these cards feature a black and white photo with the players' name below.  With the exception of the card for coach Brandy Davis, all cards contain a blue facsimile autograph.  The backs of the photo cards are blank and there's no indication on the cards themselves that they're from 1972.

How Distributed:
The photo cards were handed out to fans individually and supplied to the players in order to reply to fan mail or honor autograph requests.  I could be wrong, but I don't believe the cards were ever available in complete set form.  After an original batch of 30, featuring the manager, the coaches and the 25-man opening day roster, an additional 10 cards were released throughout the season, as evidenced by the inclusion of John Bateman, Jim Nash and Gary Neibauer.  The Phillies traded Tim McCarver to the Expos on June 14th for Bateman.  Nash and Neibauer were acquired from the Braves on June 15th for Joe Hoerner and Andre Thornton.

Studying the back of a 1972 Phillies schedule that contains photos of the entire 25-man opening day roster, I've noticed what I believe to be a few discrepancies with the scans presented with the set's entry at the Trading Card Database.  I believe the photos posted online for the cards of Darrell Brandon, coach Doc Edwards and Chris Short are actually from 1971.  The photos the Phillies most likely would have used for these three photo cards are contained on the scan shown here.  I can confirm this for the Brandon card, as I have that in my collection.

One and Only Phillies Baseball Card (2):  Bateman, Neibauer
First Appearance in Phillies Team Issued Set (9):  Anderson, Boone, Carlton, Hutton, Nash, Robinson, Scarce, Schmidt, Twitchell
Returning Players in Phillies Team Issued Set (23):  Bowa, Brandon, Browne, Champion, Doyle, Freed, Fryman, Gamble, Harmon, Hoerner, Johnson, Koegel, Lersch, Lis, Luzinski, McCarver, Money, Montanez, Reynolds, Ryan, Selma, Short, Stone

Manager (1):  Lucchesi
Coach (5):  Davis, DeMars, Edwards, Myatt, Rippelmeyer

Surprises:
The biggest surprise is the inclusion of top prospect Mike Schmidt, who made his Major League debut on September 12th.  The 10 photo cards added for players (and one coach) not on the opening day roster were (in order of their season debut) - coach Davis, Oscar Gamble, Bateman, Neibauer, Nash, Joe Lis, Bill Robinson, Mac Scarce, Bob Boone and Schmidt.  The future Hall of Fame third baseman appeared within two sets in 1972, the year before his iconic rookie card appeared with the 1973 Topps set - this set and the Puerto Rico Stickers set, both of which are extremely difficult to find.  This set is also notable for containing the first Phillies cards of both Boone and Steve Carlton.

Omissions:  Only 4 of the 38 players to appear with the Phillies in 1972 are not in this set.  Reliever Bill Wilson made his season debut in late July and appeared in 23 games.  The other three players - pitchers Bob Terlecki and Dave Downs along with infielder Craig Robinson - all made their season debuts in August or September.  The only notable omission is the Phillies' second manager during the season, Paul Owens.  Owens, the team's general manager, fired Lucchesi in mid-July and assumed control of a team that would go on to lose 97 games.

Variations/Rarities:  My only source for this set is the checklist found at The Trading Card Database, and that listing appears to have incorrect photos for the Doc Edwards and Chris Short cards.  I have two versions of the Terry Harmon card in my collection - one with and one without a blue facsimile autograph.

Also See:  1972 Topps #PR1 Mike Schmidt (This is a Phillies Room tribute to what Schmidt's 1972 Topps card could have looked like.)

This set was originally featured in a post back in January 2015, and I'm going to slowly go through these team-issued set posts and update them with new information learned (if any) over the past six years.

Just One Card & Missing Links - 1970s Phillies Edition

1975 Topps #405
1977 Topps #394
1979 Topps #169
1980 Topps #277
1981 Fleer #585
Having tackled the Phillies Missing Links from 1980 through 2008 at this point, I wanted to see what a Phillies Missing Links set from the 1970s would look like.  As far as I can tell, and please offer revisions in the comments if needed, listed below are the players who suited up with the Phillies between 1970 and 1979 and never received a Phillies baseball card.

Below this list, I've presented what I believe to be those Phillies players who received just one Phillies card, with most of these occurring in the team-issued photo card sets from the '70s.  I don't know if creating cards for these players is a project I'll tackle in the near-term, but with the checklist in place the next step would be hunting and gathering pictures of these players in red pinstripes (or baby blue road uniforms).

Phillies Missing Links of the 1970s - Initial Checklist

1970 Topps #417
1970 Topps #218
1970 Topps Appreciation:  Johnny Bateman and Ron Stone were very briefly teammates for the awful 1972 Phillies team.

On June 14, 1972, the Expos traded Bateman to the Phillies for catcher Tim McCarver.  In 82 games with the Phillies, the final year of his 10-year big league career, Bateman hit .222 with 3 home runs and 17 RBIs.  He'd be released by the Phils the following January.  Bateman's spirit lives on through a Twitter account that has so far chronicled his 1966-1968 playing days with the Astros and his 1969-1970 playing days with the Expos.  The account is now following along with Bateman's 1971 season, his final full season in Montreal.

The photo on Stone's 1970 Topps card is from 1966 when the outfielder appeared in 26 games for the Kansas City A's.  Despite appearing in 103 games for the 1969 Phillies, Topps didn't have a more recent photo for Stone available when it came time to put together his 1970 Topps card.  He'd eventually get to appear in a Phillies uniform on his 1971 and 1972 Topps cards.  In parts of four seasons with the Phils, Stone appeared in 362 games and hit .240 with 6 home runs and 89 RBIs.

I updated this post here in November 2020 and this original post is now outdated.

Long-time Astros and Expos catcher Bateman wrapped up his 10-year career with 82 games with the 1972 Phillies, and this set contains his sole Phillies baseball card.

Schmidt appeared within two sets in 1972, the year before his iconic rookie card appeared with the 1973 Topps set - this set and the Puerto Rico Stickers set, both of which are extremely difficult to find.  This set is also notable for containing the first Phillies cards of both Boone and Carlton.

The First Appearance designation is for players who have never before appeared within a Phillies team issued set.  These players may have already appeared on other Phillies baseball cards.

Variations/Rarities:  My only source for this set is the checklist found at The Trading Card Database and I'm not aware of any variations or rarities.

Trivia:  I don't currently own any 1972 Phillies Photocards, and I had wanted to hold off on posting on any sets for which I have none of the cards.  However, in the interest of pressing onwards with this project, I've borrowed the images shown here from The Trading Card Database.
