Game 133 - Phils Can't Solve Giants

2022 Topps Heritage #455
Giants 5
, Phillies 4
Game 133 - Saturday Afternoon, September 3rd in San Francisco
Record - 73-60, 3rd Place, 11 1/2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Giants outlasted the Phillies in this loss, with Brad Hand giving up the eventual winning run with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning.

What It Means:  👎

What Happened:  Not a lot of good things happened.  Noah Syndergaard had another short outing, lasting 4 1/3 innings and charged with four runs (three earned) on seven hits.  Hand had a disastrous sixth inning, allowing a hit and three walks.  Bryson Stott and Jean Segura both produced three-hit days, but the Phillies offense overall went 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position.  Stott hit his ninth home run in the fourth inning.

Featured Card:  Andrew Knapp, now catching for the Giants, went 1 for 2 in this game to raise his season average to .128.  He allowed Segura and Matt Vierling to steal bases, but gunned down Bryce Harper at second base in the third inning.

Phils Add Knebel, Camargo Before Owner Lock-Out Begins

2022 Chachi New Additions #8
2022 Chachi New Additions #9
2019 Chachi Friendly Encounters #15

This is most likely my last offseason transaction update for what could be quite some time, as the owners went into lock-out mode late Wednesday night.  All major league transactions will freeze until the player's union and the owners can agree on terms for a new collective bargaining agreement.

In more pleasant news, the Phillies may have signed their closer on Wednesday when they inked Corey Knebel to a one-year contract.  Knebel missed all of the 2019 season following Tommy John surgery and he appeared in 27 games last year with the Dodgers.  He went 4-0 with a 2.45 ERA over 27 games and 25 2/3 innings, recording three saves.  An All-Star in 2017 with the Brewers, Knebel appeared in a league-leading 76 games while recording 39 saves.  His sole mainstream baseball card from last season can be found in the Topps Update set.

Right before the start of the owners' lockout, the Phillies also signed infielder Johan Camargo, formerly of the Atlanta Braves.  Camargo appeared in only 15 games last season for the Braves, going 0 for 16 in the regular season and 0 for 4 in the NLCS . . . so he's due!  He's played every position except pitcher, catcher and center fielder during his five seasons in the big leagues.  Camargo had cards in the 2020 Topps flagship and 2020 Topps Heritage sets.  To make room for Camargo on the 40-man roster, pitcher Adonis Medina was designated for assignment.

Finally, long-time back-up catcher Andrew Knapp signed a minor league deal with the Reds.  While Knapp was apparently a favorite among the Phillies pitching staff, he struggled mightily at the plate, and he departs Philadelphia with a career .214 average over 309 games.

Game 50 - 2021 Topps Now #108 Andrew Knapp

Marlins 4
, Phillies 2
Game 50 - Wednesday Night, May 26th in Miami
Record - 24-26, 4th Place, 2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  A three-run eighth inning from the Marlins doomed the Phillies in this 4-2 loss.

What It Means:  Aaron Nola's final line (6 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts) doesn't tell the full story as he was seemingly in trouble every inning.  He battled through six innings, leaving the game with his team holding a slim 2-1 lead.

What Happened:  The Phillies offense continues to sputter along, with their two runs scored on a bases loaded walk to Brad Miller and a  Rhys Hoskins sacrifice fly.  The Phillies went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.  It could have been worse for Nola, but center fielder Odubel Herrera leapt over the fence in the sixth to take away a home run from Isan Diaz.

The bottom of the eighth had a whole host of problems for the Phillies.  Brad Miller made a bad throw to Jean Segura on a potential double play ball, reliever Sam Coonrod walked Diaz to put runners on first and second, Andrew Knapp allowed a passed ball to move those runners up and then Jon Berti singled to right to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs.

Featured Card:  Knapp has had an unfortunate run of late, the least of which being his costly passed ball and his 0 for 4 at the plate to drop his season average to .145.  He's been hit two games in a row in an extremely sensitive area, leading to lengthy game delays and questions as to how he's even able to walk at this point.  His only card so far from 2021 is his Topps Now card celebrating his walk-off single from April 21st.

Transaction:  Scott Kingery was moved from the seven-day concussion-related injured list to the regular 10-day list.

Spring Training Game 4 - 2020 Topps Total #63 Andrew Knapp

Phillies 4
, Tigers 2 (7 Innings)
Spring Training Game 4 - Wednesday Afternoon, March 3rd in Lakeland
Record - 1-2-1

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies notched their first win of the spring behind strong pitching from Zach Eflin and a four-run third inning.

What It Means:  Eflin looked solid in his first game action, working two quick innings and striking out three while allowing only one hit.  The Phillies are hoping Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler and Eflin form a strong trio at the top of the rotation.

What Happened:  Ivan Nova redeemed himself with two scoreless innings of relief, as he had struggled in the spring opener on Sunday.  Didi Gregorius and Brad Miller drove in the first two runs in the third with Andrew Knapp then coming through with a two-run double.  Travis Jankowski had two hits for the Phillies.

Featured Card:  Eflin could have gotten the card here, but I'll take the rare opportunity to feature a card of the Phillies' back-up catcher.  The rarity of the appearance isn't a knock on Knapp, but as the back-up to J.T. Realmuto he's not going to receive many chances to shine throughout the season.  I read somewhere during the offseason that Knapp is the current Phillie most likely to go on to a managerial career once his playing days are over.  His cardboard output last year was limited to cards in the flagship set, the Topps retail team set and this Topps Total card.

Game 13 - 2020 Topps #662 Andrew Knapp

Orioles 5Phillies 4
Game 13 - Wednesday Night, August 12th in Philadelphia
Record - 5-8, Tied for 4th Place, 3 1/2 games behind the Marlins

One Sentence Summary:  Zach Eflin pitched admirably but the offense couldn't get enough clutch hits in this 5-4 loss to the Orioles.

What It Means:  Behind Jake Arrieta, the Phillies will try to avoid a three-game sweep from the Orioles this afternoon.

What Happened:  Eflin went six innings, striking out a career high 10 batters, but allowing four runs on seven hits.  The biggest hits were solo home runs from Anthony Santander in the first and Rio Ruiz in the fifth.  Chance Sisco drove in a pair with a bloop single to left in the fourth.

The Phillies offense had its chances, ultimately going 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position.  Rhys Hoskins ground into three 5-4-3 double plays, personally stranding four runners and dropping his average to .190.

Featured Card:  One of the bright spots from the Phillies offense has been back-up catcher Andrew Knapp?  Knapp enjoyed his first career three-hit performance in this game, raising his average to .625 (5 for 8) in the process.  If Hoskins does indeed get a day off (or two) due to his offensive struggles, manager Joe Girardi could keep Knapp in the line-up and give J.T. Realmuto a breather by having Realmuto DH or play first.

Autographs from Knapp, Seranthony & Neris; Chachi Cards in the Wild

Prior to making our way to Citizens Bank Park for Photo Night with the entire family, Doug and I made the trip on Saturday afternoon to Bill's Sports Cards & Memorabilia on Rhawn Street for a trio of current Phillies signing autographs.  We already had autographs of Andrew Knapp, Seranthony Dominguez and Hector Neris in our 2019 collections, but the price was reasonable ($15 per autograph) and we wanted to spend some time browsing through Bill's.

The store was holding a Christmas in July sale, and all signed 8 x 10 photos were 50% off.  Normally, I don't buy signed 8 x 10s for my collection, as I prefer the signed 4 x 6 photo cards, but I couldn't resist buying a few photos once Doug came across a few printed and blown up vintage Chachi cards!  It's always cool to see a Chachi card in the wild, and coming across several examples of signed Chachi cards is even better.  Doug also added an autographed photo of Tony Taylor to replace the empty spot on his wall since he had unceremoniously removed his signed Odubel Herrera photograph.

The three Phillies were pleasant enough and each posed for a photo with Doug.  We vowed to visit the store again soon, and hopefully by then they've restocked their supply of signed jumbo Chachi cards.

Crosscutters #5
Mets 8, Phillies 2
Game 124 - Sunday Night, August 19th in Williamsport
Record - 68-56, 2nd place, 1/2 game behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Against a Mets starting pitcher, Jason Vargas, with an ERA over 8, the Phillies failed to hit and ultimately lost this game in Williamsport, 8-2.

What It Means:  The Phillies and Mets participated in the 2nd annual Little League Classic, playing in front of about 3,000 youth baseball players and their families.  Both teams wore youth baseball-appropriate jerseys with the players' nicknames on the backs.  Todd Zolecki Tweeted this was the first time the Phillies had played a regular season game at a neutral site since September 3, 1957 when they played the Dodgers at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ.

What Happened:  Nick Pivetta got knocked around in his 3 2/3 innings of work, allowing six runs on eight hits.  The only Phillies runs came on a two-run home run from Carlos Santana (18) in the 6th.

Featured Cards:  Rhashan, the official Director of Smiles for the Williamsport Crosscutters, made the sign below to welcome back one-time members of the short season Class A team.  Crosscutters baseball cards for 9 of the former players/coaches mentioned in the sign are featured above.

Transaction:  Due to the "inconvenience of travel," Andrew Knapp was added to the active roster as the 26th man for this game.

Game 82 - 2018 Topps Now #396 Andrew Knapp (and More #LetsGoPadres)

Phillies 4, Nationals 3 (13)
Game 82 - Sunday Afternoon, July 1st in Philadelphia
Record - 45-37, 2nd place, 3 games behind the Braves

Massive, Meandering Post-Vacation Catch-Up, Part 3 of 11

One Sentence Summary:  Andrew Knapp launched an absolute bomb of a home run to give the Phillies a 4-3 win over the Nationals in 13 innings.

What It Means:  The Phillies won the four-game series from the floundering Nationals before heading home for a quick, two-game set with the Orioles.  With the trade deadline approaching, all eyes are on the Orioles' Manny Machado and the possibility of his being dealt for a boatload of prospects.

What Happened:  The Phillies tied it at three in the 5th inning with a bases loaded walk to Cesar Hernandez, a sacrifice fly from Rhys Hoskins and a single from Odubel Herrera.  Jake Arrieta lasted just five innings, and eight Phillies relievers held the Nationals scoreless following his departure.  Jake Thompson threw three scoreless innings and Nick Pivetta pitched the 13th to pick up the win.

Featured Card:  Since I'm late with these game summary posts, I can actually feature the Topps Now card that Knapp received for his big hit.

Transaction:  As expected, Vince Velasquez landed on the 10-day disabled list with a right forearm contusion and Pat Neshek was activated.  Neshek had been on the disabled list since opening day.  Zac Curtis was also sent to the IronPigs and Thompson took his place in the bullpen.

Field Report:  After an extremely enjoyable morning at the San Diego Zoo, we attended our second Padres game on Sunday afternoon where the game time temperature was a cool 72 degrees.  He didn't get any autographs, but Doug can now officially recommend the Hodad's cheeseburger.

2018 Chachi Ballpark Visits #5
2018 Chachi Ballpark Visits #6
The Pirates took this game against the Padres, 7-5, with the big hit being a fifth inning grand slam from Pirates third baseman Colin Moran.  Hunter Renfroe homered for the Padres and old friend Freddy Galvis went a combined 0 for 7 with 4 strikeouts over the two games we saw.  We loved our time in San Diego and I wouldn't be surprised if we made a return visit one day.  It would be great to root for the Phillies in this gorgeous setting.

Petco Park scoreboard shows the Phillies and Nationals tied at 3 in the 12th

Sunday, June 17, 2018

Game 68 - 2018 Phillies Team Issue 2 #15 Andrew Knapp

Phillies 4, Brewers 1
Game 68 - Saturday Afternoon, June 16th in Milwaukee
Record - 36-32, 3rd place, 4 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phils hung on to win this game, 4-1, despite a lack of clutch hitting.

What It Means:  They'll go for the series win on Father's Day and then come home to open a 3-game set against the Cardinals.

What Happened:  Zach Eflin threw five strong innings, but was pulled in favor of a pinch-hitter in the 6th.  The move paid off when pinch-hitter Maikel Franco was intentionally walked to load the bases and then J.P. Crawford walked to give the Phils a 3-1 lead.  Cesar Hernandez followed that up by beating out an infield single to put the Phillies up 4-1.  Hector Neris was (surprisingly) called upon to pitch the 9th, and shut the Brewers down in order to record his 10th save.

The offense drew 10 walks but left 15 runners on base, including bases loaded strandings in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings.

Featured Card:  The Phillies first got on the board with an absolute moonshot home run (9) from Rhys Hoskins in the 4th, followed by another solo home run from Andrew Knapp (1) in the 5th.  I'm giving Knapp the card here as the now back-up catcher has struggled at the plate this season and his average went up to .183 following this game.

Transactions:  The bullpen shuffled its ranks before this game with Luis Garcia landing on the 10-day disabled list with a wrist injury and Mark Leiter, Jr. heading back down to Lehigh Valley.  Yacksel Rios and Jake Thompson were summoned to take their places.

2017 Phillies Team Issue Update #49
First Mention on The Phillies Room:  January 1, 2015 - It's fitting that the first full post of the new year features the latest veteran departure from the under performing 2014 club. Yesterday afternoon, the Phillies traded outfielder Marlon Byrd (and cash) to the Cincinnati Reds for pitching prospect Ben Lively.  The big squad sure isn't getting any better, but the Phillies' Double-A team should be fun to watch this year with Aaron Nola, Zach Eflin, Tom Windle and Lively slated to be the Fightin Phils' top four starting pitchers.

Byrd was one of the better offensive performers for the Phillies in 2014, hitting .264 in 154 games with 25 home runs and 85 RBIs. Although his 185 strikeouts were second only to Ryan Howard's 190 to lead the National League.

Lively joins Endy Chavez in the exclusive club of players the Phillies received in trades for Byrd. The right-handed pitcher had cards in this past year's Topps Heritage Minors, Bowman Chrome and Bowman Draft sets.
