Puppets & Other Things

I only thought the last of my company had left...
Last night my brother's flight was delayed and we live close to the airport, so he ended up just spending the night here. I'm always glad to spend time with JG, and it was fun to hang out this morning. Nick left early for work, and when I heard Logan on the monitor I was doing my best to will him back to sleep. It got silent for a while, and I thought maybe I'd succeeded, and then JG rapped on my door and walked in carrying Logan, all smiley and still in his sleep sack.

It was so sweet of him to take the initiative, but I just have to say- watching guys who have never had kids try and carry babies always cracks me up. Not picking on you, Brett but it looked a little bit like this, if you can imagine:
So then the three of us sat around the kitchen table. JG did some work and drank coffee, I drank hot tea  and tried to wake up, and Logan sat in his high chair banging on the tray, eating oatmeal and peaches. I enjoyed it, it was a nice morning.

What do normal week day mornings look like at your house?

They look a lot different now that they did when I was working, that's for sure. Here is what a typical week day morning looks like at our house:

Between 6 and 6:30 Logan wakes up and starts talking or whining on the monitor. It's usually 6:19 to be exact. Nick goes upstairs and changes his diaper and brings him into our bed. If it's earlier than that or if we're extra tired I will go upstairs and feed Logan in the glider and try and get him to go back to sleep. I'd say my success rate is around 15%. Most of the time when he's up, he's ready to start the day.

So Nick brings him downstairs and starts getting ready for work, and I feed Logan and then we lay in bed until 7 or 7:15. After he eats Logan will generally lay with me and cuddle and watch the fan and chew on his hands for 10 minutes or so. Then he rolls over, climbs up on top of the pillows and scratches on the headboard for a little while. That provides about five solid minutes of entertainment.

When he gets bored of that he crawls over to Nick's side of the bed and starts reaching for the baby monitor. I slide over and give him that to chew on and explore to buy myself a few extra minutes of dozing. He'll get bored of that after while and then he'll start crawling to the edge of the bed and peeking down at Lexi and whining. Peering down at Lexi and whining always means GAME OVER. The beast can't be contained anymore and it's time to get up and start our day. Although if I'm feeling especially lazy I will sometimes pull up videos of Hooplakidz or YoGabbaGabba on my iPhone and hold those up for him to watch. That buys a couple more minutes.

I usually sing some good morning songs to Logi and open all the blinds to at least try and appear cheerful and alert, so his memories of his mom in the morning aren't that I was a total zombie. Then we begin our day.

This morning we tried Kindermusik.

The jury's still out on that one. There were aspects of it that I liked for sure, but the whole singing in unison and marching around the room and doing hand motions with baby isn't really my cup of tea. You all know this about me.

If I had to guess, I'd say Logan feels the same way. A couple of weeks ago the lady at library story time busted out her tiger hand puppet and a crazy voice, and the other babies smiled and clapped their hands and squealed in delight.

Logan, the ever skeptic, sat there staring at the lady and her tiger, totally unamused, with his mouth hanging open and a little string of drool coming out. Never once cracked a smile or changed his expression. Just stared.

It was one of those times when you think to yourself, "OK my baby is either dumb as a box of rocks or smart as a whip. Which one is it?"

The lady kept trying to interact with Logan- no I'm sorry- the tiger puppet kept trying to interact with Logan- and get him to crack a smile, but he was NOT having it. He just stared at that little puppet expressionless and then finally looked up at me and wiggled out of my lap and made a little sigh. All I could do was offer an apologetic shrug to the lady and her tiger puppet because I know where he's coming from. That's the face I felt like making at Kindermusik today when the lady told us it was "prancing time," but I played nice and pranced anyway.

Last night I made what I'm thinking may be my very last batch of baby food. Which is kinda sad, kinda not.

I'm no expert when it comes to baby food making- everything you would ever need to know can be found HERE, but I'm telling you- if you don't make your own baby food you would be shocked how easy and cheap it is. I was pretty intimated to get started, but trust me- it's EASY.

I don't make all of Logan's food, I buy a lot of Plum pouches and starter meals but that adds up, and of course he eats table food as well. Plus, I can't bring myself to feed him meat out of a package or a jar. I don't know,  just can't do it.

So like last night, I baked some chicken in the oven in olive oil (I buy dark meat for him because it has more fat and iron) and cooked some brown rice. Then I just started throwing it and random stuff we had in the blender. I had some cranberry sauce in the pantry so I made him several cubes of chicken, rice and cranberry. I warmed up some broccoli and did broccoli, rice and chicken. I did some with peaches, some with grapes... one package of chicken will make tons and tons of baby food. The hardest part is cleaning up all the dishes when you finish.

My dad and Rhonda left yesterday, as I mentioned, but we had a little birthday celebration for Rhonda before they headed back to Colorado.

Look at these cool sparkler candles!! I had never seen such a thing before. I found them at Nothing Bundt Cakes (my new obsession).

Oh, and besides all that- apparently yesterday I spent some time playing in the sand.

Someone randomly (and mistakenly??) tagged this photo of me on Facebook, and it just makes me laugh. Too random and funny not to share.

I am cracking up today! We tried our music class version and well... lets just say we had a similar experience! Never again! On another note... we are all moved in to our new house and closed on our old... thank you so much for all your help... i feel like your blog was such a great starting point... and like you, Mr. St. Joe arrived in the mail and I didn't even have time to unpack him before putting out the sold sign! wink... and my last thought on today's hilarious blog is the mom's desperate attempt for just 5 more minutes in bed... once we lined up cherios on the edge of Liam's crib.... genious i tell you! hahaha

Thanks so much for your sweet comments Chelsea. I got Addie's letters from www.craftcuts.com. You can get them in various different colors or unfinished and paint them yourself if you are motivated for that sort of thing. There are tons of fonts to choose from. We are really happy with them. Hope that helps.

haha. I have never taken the boys to kindermusic and don't think we will make it to that one. our storytime leader is also a little bit cooky, but, I think you would need to be to entertain that many kids? who knows. ha. it's so funny as kids get older the things we do to try and get a few more minutes of sanity/sleep/time to ourselves. I know mine has adapted with their ages. and um, the pic at the bottom is hilarious!! might need to make sure you have to approve if ppl tag you in pics if this guy becomes a habitual "chelsea" ;)

I am impressed with your baby food making skills! I made most of Nole's but could never bring myself to do meat - yuck! I should have done some combinations. Great idea!

I really did LOL at your description of Logan and the puppet with the drool. Genius he is. Like a CAT, you have to earn that smile and affection. Others; dog. Easily amused.

I was really confused of that picture of you on FB yesterday!! I was laughing at the storytime story. We went to story time at the Rec center a few weeks back and there was this OVERLY animated lady there and I was seriously just cracking up at her but all the kids just were enamored by her and were hanging on to her every word!

I absolutely loved your interpretation of Kindermusik. Honestly...I was laughing out loud. I had the same experience with Preston and seriously sat there thinking "you have got to be f***ing kidding me...no, I dont think we need to sing each childs name over and over again". Glad that I am not the only normal one out there!

Hahaha! That is EXACTLY how Caleb was as an infant. We did do Kindermusik, but Caleb was 2 and really really loved it. I on the other hand was like you-- so skeptical of the whole thing. I'm not exactly chipper and silly like those folks are. A friend and I did it, so it wasn't bad... and the kids are the ones that sang, so I lucked out there!;)

Hi Chelsea,
I know this is a pretty random question but, I really like the grey tshirt you are wearing in that picture with Logan. Do you mind telling me where you found it? PS Logan is growing up so fast and is just ADORABLE!!

Thanks, Olga! I love that shirt too. It's a cowl neck, super soft & comfee from Ann Taylor Loft and I just put a pink tank underneath.
