Some Notable Meals From The Past Week

Yesterday's lunch of Soup and Salad at Virgilio's was one of the best I have had in a while...
the restaurant lighting is romantic, not conducive to food photography...
Black Bean Soup...
this messy thing is the Veggie Roti at Jen's Island Deli. Interesting depth of flavor. I really liked it...
On Sunday, we took the ferry over to St. John and gave Cruz Bay Landing a second chance. Last year we tried eating there, were ignored for 20 minutes and left. This time we got good, fast and friendly service at the bar. We both had their Tofu Scramble (with side of Guac). Maybe I am still a little bitter about last year, will probably go back to doing the Sunrise Smoothie from St. John Scoops on future St. John visits...
On the home front, been sticking to carryout from Louie's Market. Large portions last for days and taste great. Hope they keep it up.
An Orchid for sale at Phantasea Botanical Garden. More to come. Bye for now.

Recent Indulgences and a Pupdate

Quinoa is becoming very ubiquitous down here....
my 'Quinoa Salad' with Arugula, Raisins, Cherry Tomatoes, Capers, Pecans and Sherry Vinaigrette at Sails was good, but not as great as the Black Bean, Corn and Avocado Salad that I came there for. Guess they change their menu seasonally...
their Drink of the Day sounded fantastic, I just wasn't in the mood to shell out $16 for it...
picked up a cheeseless Veggie Pizza from Pizza Amore. It was good. Next time I will opt for picking my own Veggies rather than the typical...
Capellini al Pomodoro Fresco carried out from Virgilio's..way too delicious...
I'm always drooling over the Rum Cakes for sale, so I was psyched to find a vegan version...
they did a great job. Will definitely stock up on these...
My Iced Soy Chai Tea from Bad Ass Coffee today was not bad ass at all. I remember Starbucks' doing better a better version...
Scrat trying to squeeze through to the front seat coming home from his neutering on Tuesday. They said he has mange, so he is now on antibiotics, bi-weekly Nextguard doses and the recipient of frequent medicated shampoos.
Sweet Sadie was found to still be heartworm positive, so she is now on (very large) antibiotics, steroids and will be going for monthly injections of 'Melarsornine', the drug that kills heartworms. The price to pay for living in paradise...lots of mosquitos. Anyway, thanks for looking. Bye for now.

Meals Worth Mentioning

The generic appearance of my Hummus Appetizer at Caribbean Fusion belied its quality. The Hummus was 'bright', as Gail Simmons always says on Top Chef, the Celery was crunchy and it was more than enough for an entree. I would definitely recommend it....
plus the view from the restaurant is awesome...
beautiful flowers all around the resort where the restaurant is located...
The Cashew Tofu at Saki House is always 'top notch'. 'Top notch' appears to be used quite frequently these days, especially in Tripadvisor reviews and on tshirts. 'Dumpster Fire' was the word of 2016 and I believe 'Top Notch' will be the word of 2017....
got some Black Bean Soup to go from  Virgilio's on Thursday. It wasnt thick, so the diced Onion was sinking rapidly as I tried to take a picture, but it was so deeply flavorful. Virgilio's is top notch...
below is a not-so-inviting food truck in the Bovoni area of St. Thomas...
our trepidations about approaching were unfounded. The young guys working there were friendly and patient as we tried to figure out how and what to order. Below is a small order with BBQ Tofu, Veggies, Pasta, Rice and Beans and Lentil Balls...
another day we got Stewed Tofu with Mashed Potatoes. They always put Lentil Balls on top whether you ask for them or not. Those food truck guys are good cooks, hopefully a brick and mortar restaurant is in their future...
this Tofutti Almond Bark Frozen Dessert just started popping up in various stores, so I bought one where I found it for the least expensive, $5.95...
it is good, but it is definitely 'frozen dessert', not Coconut Milk....
last weekend it was still decorated for Christmas...
I liked the baskets of complimentary fans. Assume it can get quite warm sitting in there...
thanks for looking...
Lots more to come. Bye for now.

A Week Of Lunches

All were winners this week, starting with a Vegetable Panini at Bella Blu. The bread was so light with Roasted Red Peppers, Spinach, Tomato and Olive Oil. They did a great job...
Tuesday was a feta-less Greek Salad carried out from Virgilios. This Salad is so delicious, I fear there might be egg or dairy in the dressing....
Wednesday I just stayed home and enjoyed Gardein Crispy Tenders with Heinz-57. Both items are ridiculously expensive down here, but gotta show the demand for them...
Thursday, I carried out a large platter from Love Livin. Lasagna, Broccoli, Eggplant and Pasta Salad. Tons left for future meals, a great value...
Lunch today was another Vegetable Panini, this time at Boom Cucina. Lots of Zucchini, Onions and a little rustic style Hummus. Messy but tasty, I will get it again..
the fuzzies have pretty much done in our couch, so Tuesday a non-absorbant replacement will be arriving...
ads for next months Vegan Food Fair are appearing around the Island. Hope to purchase some homemade sweets...
Lots more to come. Bye for now.

More Weekend Food and More Fish

'Thirteen' is a restaurant near our house that is too high falutin for a website. The Mr. frequently gets Pizza to go from there and on Friday, they agreed to make a cheeseless Pizza as well. Really excellent (probably better with cheese), but a great new option for me to get...
below is their carryout menu, which offers some Edamame and a couple Salads that can be veganized. I will try those in the future (the Salads, not the Edamame)...
lunch yesterday was at Virgilios. Below is my 'Spaghetti Peasant Style' with Mushrooms, Garlic, Dijon Mustard,White Wine and Tomato Sauce...
as you can see, the interior of the restaurant is really fancy, which is why we usually get carryout. They even have a copy of the Mona Lisa. Service was outstanding, we felt welcome in shorts and t-shirts, a great place with great food.
some wild dogs we saw that would not let me get close. I keep saying I need to carry string-cheese in the car to lure these loose dogs...
here are the few pics that came out from yesterdays dive...a File Fish...
a Honeycomb Cow Fish...
a Sea Lettuce Sea Slug...
new vegan items procured at Plaza Extra today...Bee-less Honey $8.99 and Flavored Coconut Milks $1.69 each. Any recs for what to do with the Honey would be greatly appreciated...
Calvin swam at two different beaches today, in the morning with me and in the afternoon with his Dad. Still doesnt make a dent in his energy level but he is getting really confident in the water. We are proud.
Lots more to come. Bye for now.

Randomness Redux

Not enough stuff to build a themed post so here is some randomness...
the Blackened Tofu Sandwich carried out from Virgilio's. Phenomenal.
these Malibu Gardenburgers were new to me. I didnt buy them because they were $18.99 (but mostly because I prefer Soy-based Burgers). There is an article in today's St. Thomas Source that mentions 'dumping' 'inferior' or 'outdated' products from the mainland down here. I was a Big Lots fan so this is not a negative for me...
another example of this situation are some Abe's Mini-Muffins I found recently....
they are excellent, but will I ever see them again? My hopes arent high on that one...
an open container of alcohol is legal here, but this is a cute idea for another beach trip...
Thumper trying to get some shut eye while the sun is still out...
Bougainvillea. Bye for now.
