CUBA: TRIAL VIOLATES DISSIDENTS' RIGHT TO FREE EXPRESSION posted 04/22/04
(New York, April 22, 2004) – Cuba’s planned trial of a blind human rights lawyer, along with nine other dissidents and independent journalists, on charges of “disrespect for authority” demonstrates a continuing pattern of political repression, Human Rights Watch said today. Human Rights Watch has learned that the trial of the 10 defendants is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, April 27

On March 18, 2003, Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro, arrested more than
75 journalists, labor union organizers, civic leaders, and human rights activists as political prisoners.  Castro sentenced them to a total of more than 1,000 years in prison, most will die before their sentence is completed.  It was a brutal attempt by Castro to crush the citizens' movement for nonviolent regime change.  Despite the repression, the civic movement in Cuba continues to strive for change, inspired by
the example given by Cuban political prisoners.

EL MUNDO ARTISTICO REPUDIA A CASTRO

Listen carefully to Latin America's response to Cuba's repression: silence
''Where is Latin America?'' screamed a Herald editorial earlier this week. Where are the voices of democracy in the region now that Cuba is secretly sentencing 78 peaceful pro-democracy activists -- including 28 journalists -- to long prison terms for crimes such as having a tape recorder or -- God forbid -- a fax machine?

"Mr. Speaker: Where is the outrage? Rep. Bob Menendez (D-NJ-13), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus' statement on the House Floor during consideration of House Resolution 179 regarding the systematic human rights violations
in Cuba committed by the Castro regime, calling for the immediate release of all political prisoners, and supporting respect for basic human rights and free elections in Cuba

MUM'S THE WORD FOR HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES Castro continued his crackdown on dissidents with the speedy conviction of at least 74 nonviolent government opponents in nonpublic kangaroo-court proceedings. Rounded up last month, the jailed independent journalists and pro-democracy activists, including reporter-photographer Omar Rodriguez Saludes, writer Raul
Rivero and magazine editor Ricardo Gonzalez, received sentences of up to 27 years each

SUPPORT CUBA'S OPPOSITION MOVEMENT
With Fidel Castro facing possibly his worst economic crisis since the Soviet implosion in 1991-1992, Cuba's peaceful, democratic dissidents are becoming increasingly energized. These brave souls deserve the same international support provided to Nelson Mandela in South Africa and to the Eastern European dissidents under the Soviet yoke.
