April 2016 In Review | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

For the past few years I have started doing monthly review pages in my album. Essentially for me, its taking the pressure off to finish complete layouts for every single life event. These are still picture I WANT to share in my album but time is not on my side. Typically my monthly review pages look like pocket pages; however, as I have been filling the gaps from my chronological scrapbooks they may look like this.

You may be thinking.... shes scrapbooking tiny events from 3 years ago.
Yes. Yes I am.
So how can you remember the details?
I can't really.
But I use my journalling from my Facebook Pages to jog my memory and often quite literally copy and paste.

Here's a look at what it looks like in the album:

Inspired by Paige Evans. | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

When I ran across this die cut silhouette style white page designed by Paige Evans for Pink Paislee, I had to have it. I quickly selected a raibow 12x12 sheet of patterned paper that would lay behind. Just that was enough to pull this page together.  My biggest trouble was developing a way to make the 12x12 die cut become 8.5x11". To smooth the edge, I sewed a distressed piece of patterned paper. It did the trick. Finally, I used Ali Edwards Grow kit embellishments and Details story kit acrylic word to finish it off.

Check out the dimension of this page...
And yes, this is hanging on my wall in a shadow box rather than in an album for the moment.

Habit. | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

Keeping good habits is never easy but in recent years I’ve been doing a better job at reflecting on what habits I want to have and how to acheive them. Writing in planenrs have always been a way for me to do that but bullet journals seem to be the best so far. The small sized annual books givs me enough structure and flexibility that it works for me. I take three bullet journals with me everywhere. You’ll find them on the kitchen table and dragged across the country. They keep me on task and on time. I feel in control and focused when I use them consistently. Ironically, in times when I am too busy I often won’t plan because I don’t prioritize it. I start to feel overwhelmed and realize I should never skip the few minutes to put pen to paper. Yes. I am a planner girl.

Teal: Planner //
My day to day planner where I write activities, appointments and many to do lists. Sometimes I include meal plans or lists detailing everything from parties to packing lists.

Orange: Work //
A lined bullet journal that has notes detailing phone calls and conversations. This is where I note skus and things related to work that I can’t forget.

Purple: Creative //
Each page is different as I note my mthly deadlines, list sales orders, customer address changes and everything in between. When creativity sparks, I get it on paper in here.

am/pm: September Routines | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

September has arrived and we are all craving routine again.

On school days an ideal morning begins with Mom waking up before everyone else around 6:30am. I sometimes will have a sip of coffee. I try to plan out the day and start lunches. However, typically I need to clear off the counter first. And in order to clear off the counter, the dishwasher must first be unloaded. If I am lucky I’ve at least thought about lunches the night before. This year St. Peters Primary does not have any cafeteria service. If we don’t pack a lunch, the kids won’t have one.

I start waking Ryan up about 6:45. He generally doesn’t budge and if he does he finds his way to the washroom. It drives me bananas but I really don’t know why I would expet him to rise and shine on his after all these years?

Kids are up next at 7am. Jane Caines is often the first up. She is always ready to tackle the day. And she is hungry immediately. She usually choses fruit, oatmeal or smoothies. She always has a small glass of juice. This is her only chance for juice on a typical day. Jack on the other hand used to have to be carried downstairs. He will still have his eyes closed. Lately hes hopping into our bed for a couple extra minutes. He’s a true sloth. Jack will eventually ask for a glass of milk and either Cheerios or peanut butter toast. In all likelihood he won’t eat much.

For this year there’s no devices or TV in the mornings when there’s school or places to go. Jack would turn from sloth to zombie. Sometimes I’ll put on the radio or Good Morning Canada. On a great morning it will be the Jay and Dan show on TSN.

Jane gets dressed and rolls her eyes at the prospect of brushing her hair. I am exhausting all efforts to get Jack in the bathroom and to get himself dressed.

By 8am the bus is there and we are ready to rock and roll.... even if I do Jane’s hair at times at the bus stop.

Then it’s Mom’s turn. I never eat breakfast until I am at work. Of course, by then I am famished. It’s so nice to have some time in the morning... just to get a shower. But most days I am rushing out the door with a long to do list in my cleanest yoga pants and running shoes.

Ryan takes it all in stride. He’s easy peezy as his busy work season is slowing down.

The evening routines are quite different depending what is on the schedule. On the weekends, we stretch the bedtimes. However, on the week days we try to get to bed no later than 8:30. The truth of that is that there’s many nights where the kids still awake at 9:30. The truth is that bed time routines are hard. Jane has gymnastics until 8pm some nights and she can’t even get home by 8:30 let alone have some supper. There are nights when I have to lug Jack for pick ups as well. On the night Jane doesn’t have gymnastics we try to have supper as a family, keeping in mind that many evenings we are eating as we pass each other by or snacking in the car from one place to another. We try to do homework and we try to do baths. WE even try to have some device time so that we can all have that alone time we all crave.

We have a new rule where there’s no devices past 7:30pm. It’s making bed time a lot smoother; however, Jack and Jane will still fight with us when we say its time to go brush our teeth.

These days Jack dilly dallies more than Jane. He’s always finding an excuse to fool around with this toy or that. Often he avoids brushing his teeth. Once he gets in the bed, one parent will read him a story. The other parent will settle Jane in. She reads herself now - that has only started recently.

Jack sleeps under the covers with toys surrounding him. Jane sleeps on top of the covers with her stuffies lined perfectly at the bottom of her bed.

Once both kids decide to close their eyes, they sleep quickly. Often I will go into my room while that’s happening and I always fall asleep.

It won’t be long before Jack will call asking for milk. Milk. Which we cut out int he bed months ago yet he still asks. We get him fresh water. He never wants the water that was there from earlier in the day.

Jack will sleep with his bunny.
Jane will only sometimes sleep with her hunny.
Jack will spread out his blankie on top of the pillow.
Jane will leave the light on.

Did you hear that?
It’s finally silent.
Mom and Dad will chose a show to watch on the main floor or in the bedroom. Sometimes Mom falls asleep and sometimes she doesn’t. Either way. “Good night good night Construction site”.

Roam | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

I was in the Woods.

When the sun crepts through the trees and you can see the
shadows oh so perfectly.
When you can only hear the sounds of nature.
When the weather is not too hot and not too cold.
When the people you love
surround you.
That’s when you need to stop and take a minute to take all its beauty in.
So I did.

Imperfectly Perfect | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

things are never perfectly perfect.
we know that.
yet, I strive for perfection in some way every day.
Starting with the perfect cup of coffee,
praying for the perfect amount of ‘me time’ in my chair before I hear the perfect pitter patter of feet.
And from there I wish for the perfect weather.
not too hot. not too cold.
mostly not too windy.
I want my hair to be perfect by spending the smallest amount of time on it.
Many times I wish for my children to behave perfectly. Especially in public.

But I settle for imperfection.
Always.
I don’t overthink it.
I can let things go.
Not all the things.
But most of the things.

I don’t care that we leave the dishes on the counter over night or forget to make our beds in the morning.
I see the toothpaste all over the sink then look the other way.
Sometimes we eat meals without vegetables. And other times we might have ice cream twice in one day.
The lights are left on and there’s tuffs of dog hair rolling across each room.
It’s not unusual for me to wear my shirt inside out. And sometimes even two
different shoes.
I sometimes fight with my husband.
Other days I raise my voice too loud at the kids.

My family and I.
We are truly imperfect.
we are living in this imperfect life.
Always in the pursuit of happiness.
Always trying to learn.
Always trying to be better.
so I guess, it would be a great reminder to each of us.
especially me. that maybe.
just maybe.
imperfection is oh so perfectly perfect.

The Best of Times | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

It was a beautiful day for a stroll downtown St. John's, Newfoundland.
All four of us wandering in no direction.
Of course, the first stop was the candy store.

I simply can't wait to do it again.
And I am so glad I stopped to take the pictures.
I am even more grateful that I documented them.
I love this hobby.

Let's Party! | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

This layout is how I ended my 2017 album.
I ended it with smiles.
Hope for new beginnings.
And quite simply magic.
They don't cost much but those sparklers remind me of magic.

I thanks 2017 for the memories.
And now I will most certainly look forward to 2018.

First Cup. | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

The first cup.
oh, how I enjoy
the smell of the coffee grounds.
the warmth of the mug in my hand.
and the steaming hot first sip.

Shhhh. Can you hear that?
I can hear all my thoughts.
I am tired but I hear my voice.
It’s making lists.
It’s prioritizing.
But I am remembering my hopes.
I am remembering to stay positive.
Its a new day.
And I am thankful to have
a couple minutes to myself with
a fresh cup of coffee.
I so love the first quiet cup.

In and Out | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

Off on another another adventure.
I can breath again.
It’s the moments in the airport before the gate opens up that allows me to breath.
In and out.
In and out.
Slowly now.
In and out.
It doesn’t matter where I am going. If it’s just me and my passport with no one else to worry about, I can find my peace.
I can worry about me.
And when I board the plane, no one can find me.
No one can contact me.
Everything is out of my control.
And that’s when I can taste the air.
Where am I going again?

CREATING PROCESS

This hybrid project began within Adobe Photoshop where I inserted my photo and added the journalling using the Remington Noiseless font as you can see above.  The above file was then printed on my own printer.

Once the page was printed I add the title and plaed around with the chipboard pieces until they were just right.

Keepin' it simply just one layout at a time.

Canada 150 | Simple Scrapper

July 1, 2017 marked Canada's 150th birthday.  Across the country people were celebrating in style. For me and my family, it was a beautiful day of spontaneity and adventure. Although the picture didn't come out as perfectly as I would have liked, they told a story.

"It had been a long month.  The first of June found our family in Mexico but my life was being rushed as vacations meant I had a lot less time to get the annual financial statements filed. Working late, eating on the fly and rushing from one place to another.  I was overwhelmed.  It was June 30th and Ryan had cooked a BBQ. After supper while the kids were outside on the trampoline, we watched the news.  Something we don’t do often for one reason or another.  There was a local missing girl and we continued to hope there was more information on her case.  Instead I watched the weather man, Eddie Sheer do his newscast from a “Canada 100” sign at the bottom of signal hill.  I turned to Ryan and said “I wanna go there”. Not sure why but Ryan replaied “Let’s do it.”  We asked the kids whether they were interested and neither of them wanted to join us.  Throwing in an ice cream got them strapped into the SUV.  I grabbed my DLSR camera and took a few pictures on the way down.  It was a gorgeous day. The fog will start rolling in soon, I am sure. When we got to the spot the news crew were just finishing off their final sign off. Perfect timing.  We stood and waited for them and then started to take our pictures.  A line began to form behind us so all of a sudden I felt rushed in my pictures.  It didn’t matter.  I didn’t get the picture I wanted but I got a day of exploring after wards.  The kids ran down the trail and up the steep rocks.  With every foot step, I was a nervous wreck pictuing one of them running off a clift.  Ryan was getting irritated by my barks to stay close.  I couldn’t help it.  They sat on the cannons and sat in the grass. They raced over the grassy hills and looked for the light house. All the while I snapped pictures as the sun was setting. It was beautiful.  The night was warm and it was exactly what I needed to kick off a new month. Of course, we all ate ice cream to cap it off."

These layouts were created for SPARK magazine, which is a monthly magazine for members of the Simple Scrapper online community. Owner, Jennifer Wilson provides sketches and story starters each month that help drive inspiration in your quest to document your memories.

My design style was very clean and simple.  It started out with the story typed using the Remington Noiseless typewriter font within Photoshop Creative Cloud.  This was printed out on Whisper Whiter cardstock by Stampin' Up! on 8.5"x 11".

As a subscriber to the Ali Edwards Story Kits, I found some chipboard elements and embellishments that quickly brought this layout together.

If you would like more information on the Simple Scrapper Membership, please contact me. In addition, you can now see ont month of SPARK magazine for free!  This will help you see all the inspiration and resources that Jennifer Wilson provides.

Documenting a loss | Simple Scrapper

It's never easy to document a loss.  However, I was prompted by a Story Starter from Jennifer Wilson's Simple Scrapper to give it a try.  Although the layout isn't perfect in my mind, I don't believe I could ever really scrapbook it perfectly.

I started with the story and used the celebration of life cards as the photo.  However, a photo really isn't necessary. Ali Edwards had a Story Kit named "Tough" therefore; I used elements from that kit to create the clean and simple page.

As I started this process, I realized that I would pop on Facebook Live and document the process.  Check out the video if you are interested.

This was hard.  The past few weeks we knew that Natasha was not doing well. We hadn’t been hearing much from her except from a scattered message here and there.  We knew she had a hard time texting and often it was her husband or friends messaging us.  She took a turn just before Christmas and we all knew she would soon find her way as an angel.  Every thing had been pre-planned.  We had been talking about it for months.  A bucket list, quilts and knitted hats for the hospital babies were being made, funeral favours and secret tasks were planned.  But when it came, it was too quiet.  Rhea and I met in Goobies to make the trek to Natasha’s celebration of life on December 27th.  Natasha was a friend that I met through scrapbooking and as was Rhea.  It’s this hobby that brought three of us together.  She was something special and the world is certainly at a lost without her.  Her illness re-ignited my faith. Something I never thought would happen. I suppose that might be her greatest gift to me.  Even after almost a year has gone by, I find it hard to explain to those close to me what Natasha meant to me.  I wrote a card to Ray, her husband sending my condolescences and perhaps that’s the best way to describe it.

“Dear Ray.  I am a little bit of a mystery friend.  We spoke a lot but mostly by iMessage. Natasha was my every day.  Like a cup of coffee. Only it was an every hour cup. We have many stories but my brain is too mushy to think.  It wasn’t “good morning” – it was “what’s for breakfast?” or ‘ I am worried about..’ She solved many of my day to day dilemmas (how do you cook frozen peas?) She. Was. My. Every. Day. And because of that, you all were too. From the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry for your loss.”

And so, documenting her funeral isn’t exactly something I want to do but for some reason it feels appropriate. There was pink everything. And peep favours and a release of pink balloons.  There was a coating of snow and while as pallbearers, I could hear every crunch.  I heard every breath.  And I avoided every tearful eye.  Not ready to let her go, Rhea and I left to go home with “something missing”.   I still think of her often for many reasons.  Little reasons. Like… I washed, folded and put away three loads of laundry!  Every time I reach for my Lock n Lock Tupperware containers and every time I make frozen peas.  She’s probably watching me and wondering how I make it every day without her.  I really am not sure either.  But I am ready to live this life the way she’d want me to… we are heading to Disney soon where I am sure to meet her there.

Thanks for the lessons and the friendship Tash. Love always, Cathy.

Brenda + Darleen | Simple Scrapper

This layout began with one photo and a story that I wanted to tell.  I love this photo of my mother and my aunt - look how happy they are!  The truth is that they are happy - they live miles and miles apart yet somehow their connection doesn't skip a beat.

Could my sister and I be so lucky in twenty years?

Let's hope so.

The majority of the elements used in this 12x12 layout is from Ali Edwards Story kits.  I continue to use those kits as my "go to" for embellishments and Project Life cards.

Note: In order to get access to the sketch and story starters used to create this sketch, you must be a member of the Simple Scrapper community led by Jennifer Wilson.  I can assure you its worth it. Contact me if you would like more information!

DO | Simple Scrapper

I don't always scrapbook about people but rather things that I am doing.  Lately, I've been busy getting organized.  It's a slow process but I can see a different in productivity, which is certainly ensuring I live a happy life. The little things seem to be

For this layout, I was inspired by Jennifer Wilson's story starters, which relate to the Spring Cleaning theme.  To find out more, you must become a member at Simple Scrapper.

As with many of my layouts these days, I continue to be inspired by Ali Edwards story kits.  This layout has some of those embellishments.

Check out those large alphas, which I believe came from Studio Calico.  I adhered those to a 4x4 transparency by stapling them.  This gave them the look that they are floating.

Come back again next month so I can show you my May Simple Scrapper layouts.

Photograph at the Beach | Simple Scrapper

oh hello, my friends!

As many of you know, I live on an island on the East Coast of North America called Newfoundland. Like many, east coast areas you'd think there would be many sandy beaches; however, you are more likely to find a rocky beach here.  What's worse is that there's a small window of summer days that you would consider a good beach day. We got lucky and found ourselves in Terra Nova Park, a Canadian National Park, on a beautiful sunny day.  We headed to Sandy Pond (Newfoundland is incredibly "original" in their naming of people, places and things), a shallow water pond with a soft sandy beach.

We went to the beach with my sister and her family.  They get along amazingly and we are incredibly grateful to have children around the same age that get along. (In fact we are vacationing together in Florida right now).

Isn't it great as a child when you have cousins that are the same age? My husband wasn't as lucky and makes mention of this almost every family event.

One of my favourites memories from this trip is the fact that my son simply refused to take off his sneakers.  He also refused to get in the water.  My daughter on the other hand, wouldn't get out of the water.  However, both her in their glee - one enjoyed the sand while the other, the water.   There were also precious moments of hand holding, big smiles and buried dinkies. Those are the moments that I don't want to forget.

For this double layout, I used Stampin' Up! paper as my background paper and embellished largely with Ali Edwards Story kits chipboard words.

The layout comes from a sketch provided by Jennifer Wilson at Simple Scrapper.

Hope you are busy creating memories!
Cheers,
Cathy

She turned 5 | Project Life

She turned 5 last summer.
The party was an equestrian party.
I got so many good shots so I decided to mix it up with a couple traditional layouts and a project life layout.

Most of the elements in both of these layouts come from the Ali Edwards story kits, a monthly subscription that I have been involved with since Day 1... and its still the first items I reach for when I start a new layout.

The rose gold "shine" comes from some Studio Calico grab bags that took advantage of during their Black Friday sale last year.

When I receive those grab bags each year, I separate everything and put them in dishes.  It's usually enough inspiration to keep me going throughout the year.

The love this, words, and chipboard comes from the kits.  The cork board hearts came from leftovers of a class I did at my local scrapbooking store, The Paperie.

In the top left corner you can see a quote over top a black and white photo. In each story kit, she includes a quote card.  Its not necessarily used in layout as they have story starters listed on the opposite side.  However, it was too perfect not to use in this circumstance.

Each kit usually comes with a chipboard pack, which always keeps me going when doing my pocket style layouts.

This is how the layout looks in my binder for those trying to decide whether they want to introduce different sizes.

Thanks for dropping by today!

Cathy

Simple Scrapper March 2016

Welcome back to check out my projects created for  Simple Scrapper's member-only SPARK magazine. Both of these layouts were prompted by a journal prompt and a sketch.

This particular layout was created using the lovely Pink Fresh collection.

"We are a family business.  My father started this company 26 years ago with one little store, which has grown to 12 stores.  I went through business school and started a career but ended up back here.  While my parents go to Florida, I hold the reins.  It makes me proud - what’s he’s accomplished.  And so, I want to be the one to ensure my family’s future is secure for generations to come.  It’s a big thing to lay on someone, but I am prepared and certainly have the support.  This is the Christmas party - every year we celebrate with the staff."

I love this paper.  I really do.  It's from the All Boy collection by Crate Paper.  In actually fact, it was from her very first kit released in January of 2015.

Have a great day!

2016 album cover | Simple Scrapper's Refresh

My daughter and I were in my craft room.
Jane is 5 and wants to be a traveller, a gymnast, a builder and a drawing teacher when she grows up.
I asked her to take a picture of me right now.
And so she did.

I've been having a tough time getting back into the swing of things.

Simple Scrapper's seasonal Refresh course fell on my lap and I decided to take a couple swings.  Gosh, it's nice when you feel inspired.

Using inspiration from Jennifer Wilson's Refresh course, I created my intro page to my 2016 album.  This year, I am going with a 8.5x11" album so this page protector from Stampin' Up! was cut down by an inch. Yes, this means I have to re-do the holes as well.

Like Ali Edwards, Jennifer encouraged students to document your reason why.  And so I did.

Scrapbooking for me is more than just a hobby. It’s more than just glueing pictures on a page.  I have a reason why.  I have many reasons why.  It simply fills me up.  The finished product is one thing. I smile and sometimes cry when I look at my albums. I am often reminded at how cherished these books will be someday if something tragic would ever happen to me or my loved ones.  I am reminded how special my handwriting will be to my children.  I am reminded the pages are special when I see the way my children’s faces light up as they flip through the albums.

The pages document our lives.  They document our joys and our sorrows. They document our accomplishments and failures.  They document our blessings but also our hopes and dreams for the future.

It’s not just the finished pages.  It’s the creation of those pages.  I find inspiration in the photos, the words and the product. If  I had an extra hour in a day just for me, I’d be here. I’d be at my white table surrounded by pretty things. It’s like therapy - Words and photos on pages. Perhaps its working through emotions and certainly is an exercise of reflection.

Scrapbooking and memory keeping fills me up. To be a good mom, lover and friend - I need to be filled up. Scrapbooking for me is more than just a hobby. That's for sure.

And while I finished up "my reason why", my daughter finished up her drawing - showcasing a "frame" with colour coordinating enamel dots.  She's special.

Until next time.
Cathy

Simple Scrapper | January 2016

I have exciting news!
See anyone you recognize?

That's me, top row, second in from the right.

I am pumped!

I am one of the newest Simple Scrapper Design Team members!
Simple Scrapper is a membership based memory keeping community led by Jennifer Wilson.  Believe me, she does not disappoint.

I have two layouts to share as part of the Simple Scrapper Creative Design Team.

These two pages are included in her member only monthly magazine called Spark.  They are based on a story theme and/or sketches.  The story themes are prompts that can help keep you inspired in your memory keeping journey.  The sketches are always a great resource to have.

This first layout was created from Christmas last year.  The background paper is the words to "Twas the Night Before Christmas".  A tradition at my in laws is to read the story on Christmas Eve; however, it never goes as smoothly as you see in the movies. :)

My next layout is 8.5x11" - a size that I intend to continue to use going into 2016.  I love the album size and I seem to be attracted to the how the layouts turn out.

Most of the products I used in this layout is from the Ali Edwards Story Kits.  I've subscribed to these since Day One and I am still in love with them as much as I was a year ago.

The acrylic "click" is the story prompt for that particular month.  Ali always includes one of these acrylic words in every kit.  I continue to be drawn to them and have to resist the urge to "hoard" them.

Have a great day!
Cathy
