Sheep Movie Review: Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story
May 24, 2018
Directed by: Ron Howard
Screenplay by: Jonathan Kasdan, Lawrence Kasdan
Cast:

Film Series: Star Wars Anthology Series
Music Composed By: John Williams, John Powell
Production Company: Lucasfilm, Disney Pictures

During an adventure into the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.

Han Solo is a young Corellian man seeking a way off the planet and from under the thumb of Lady Proxima (voiced by actress Linda Hunt), leader of the White Worms gang, who is after a hyperfuel known as coaxium. After getting his hands on some coaxium, he meets up with his girlfriend, Qi'ra and they try to escape. He bribes an Imperial officer with it and makes it through the gate, but Qi'ra doesn’t. Han promises to find a way to get her out. He enlists to become a pilot for the Empire (here we find out how he got his last name, Solo), but never one to listen to orders, he is kicked out of the academy for insubordination and ends up an Imperial infantryman, fighting in a war. After his troop is killed, he joins up with three thieves pretending to be infantrymen:
Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), his girlfriend Val (Thandie Newton), and the alien, Rio Durant (Jon Favreau). The three set out to rob an Imperial train for coaxium. Instead, they feed him to a beast, which happens to be none other than Chewbacca!

This is the first Star Wars film (other than the Ewoks TV films from the 80s) where the robots, C3PO and R2D2 don’t appear, not even for a second or two, though Anthology Daniels does play a part in the film. Nor Leia or Luke. But again, this is about Han’s past before they met him and Chewie (though we did see some of Chewie’s past on his home planet in Episode 3, Attack of the Clones).

Surprisingly, the movie wasn’t as bad as I feared. Actor Alden Ehrenreich wouldn’t have been my first choice to play Han, a part Harrison Ford did well and most memorably, it was obvious that the acting coach brought in helped and he did a better job than anyone would have thought. Chewie was done well, even though not played by Peter Mayhew this time around. But Chewie, younger than he was in Star Wars: A New Hope, actor Joonas Suotamo did the mannerisms and personality of Chewie right. Actor Danny Glover made a great Lando Calrissian. Many of the things Han mentions to Luke or Leia, happen in this film like how he won the Millennium Falcon from Lando to how he did the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs.

Redoing the whole film after taking over the reins from the previously fired directors, and a new script written, director Ron Howard did better than many could have. Between him, Lawrence Kasdan (wrote the screenplay for Empire Strikes Back—still the best of the Star Wars films) and his son rewriting the new script, like I said in the beginning, the film was better than I’d expected. Sadly, coming not long after the badly done Star Wars: The Last Jedi, maybe even Star Wars fatigue with so much Star Wars, it may not get much of a chance.

I gave Solo: A Star Wars Story 4 “May the Force Be With You” sheep.

Sheep Movie Review: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) Spoiler free

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)
Directed By: Rian Johnson
Written By: Rian Johnson
Cast: Daisy Ridley, Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Benicio Del Toro, Mark Hamill
December 15, 2017
Rating: PG-13 (for sequences of sci-fi action and violence)
Genre: Action & Adventure, Drama, Science Fiction & Fantasy
Runtime: 152 minutes
Studio: Walt Disney Pictures

In Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

I went to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi with my 16-year-old daughter. The theater was full and when the Star Wars logo appeared on the screen everyone clapped and had a nerdgasm. It was a fabulous moment.

It was everything a Star Wars film should be and by this, I mean like the original trilogy cheesy scene transitions and all! So many unexpected things happened in The Last Jedi. You could even call Star Wars: B*itch You Though!

You don't even have to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy The Last Jedi. My 16 year has only seen the last two Star Wars movies and loved the movie...a shirtless Adam Driver might have had a little to do with it...or a lot.

There are new characters as well as the old as the franchise transitions toward the new generation of the resistance. If you are a scifi movie fan then this is one you want to catch on the big screen.

Sheep Movie Review: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
"Rogue One" (original title)
Directed by Gareth Edwards
Writing Credits: Chris Weitz, Tony Gilroy, John Knoll, Gary Whitta, George Lucas
Cast: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen
PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi | 16 December 2016 (USA)
Former scientist Galen Erso lives on a farm with his wife and young daughter Jyn. His peaceful existence comes crashing down when the evil Orson Krennic takes him away from his beloved family. Many years later, Galen is now the Empire's lead engineer for the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, the Death Star. Knowing that her father holds the key to its destruction, a vengeful Jyn joins forces with a spy and other resistance fighters to steal the space station's plans for the Rebel Alliance.

I went to see Rogue One with my husband and 15 year old daughter. We all had a great time. Even though I am ashamed to admit this, my daughter hasn't seen any of the Star Wars movies.

The last six Star Wars movies I've gone to see because I felt like I should. None of them have measured up to those first three. But Rogue One comes close to the magic of those first three. It starts out a little slow. The audience in bounced around between four or five different places in the galaxy as all the pieces of this chess game are set in motion. Once the story focused a bit, I got invested. This was a big problem for my husband. It moved too slow...too much character development (he likes all action).

Rogue One had a more "Star Wars" feel to it. I think it was the comedy element that sold me. The droid K-2SO was fabulous and probably my favorite character. I was also happy with the character development of Jyn (the heroine).
Winning the galaxy!

There was one thing I wish they hadn't recaptured from the original Star Wars...the music! It was the same, and sounded so out-dated and kind of cheesy. But it did bring back memories of the first three movies.

This movie can stand on its own, but it does tie into the original Star Wars movie and will have more meaning if you've seen that one. This one is worth seeing on the big screen.

Movie Review: The Force Awakens 2015

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
December 18, 2015 (USA)
Director: J.J. Abrams
Film series: Star Wars
Music composed by: John Williams
Story by: George Lucas
official site
Thirty years after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, the galaxy faces a new threat from the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order. When a defector named Finn crash-lands on a desert planet, he meets Rey (Daisy Ridley), a tough scavenger whose droid contains a top-secret map. Together, the young duo joins forces with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to make sure the Resistance receives the intelligence concerning the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), the last of the Jedi Knights.

Review by Pamela K. Kinney
I will warn of spoiler alerts here, so if you have not seen the movie and don’t like spoilers, please, do not read any farther.
Highlight below to read

Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a rag-tag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.

It starts off with a sparkling image of Lucasfilms’ LTD, no Disney logo insight. Though we all know by now (unless you live under a rock) that Disney owns all rights to Star Wars. The familiar crawl of words comes after that, stating that Luke has been missing for some time and that General Leia has sent the Resistance’s best man for finding the map of his whereabouts to find him as they need him back to help them in battling a new foe, the First Order. The First Order is built on the same principals as Palpatine’s rule—formed out out of the Darkside—its goal to rule the galaxy.

The First Order. Obviously, some are remnants of the former Empire wanting back their glory days of Palpatine’s rule, only now this is under a new leader, “Supreme Leader Snoke.” Most of him is by hologram and he looks creepy and alien—is he a new Sith lord that has arisen after the defeat of Palpatine and Vader in Return of the Jedi? Or something else?

This movie is what was old is new again. Old in the stormtroopers, new in the way their helmets look, like having their former what I call a frown, now turned upside down or like a smile. Or as some have said, looking like a duck, like Donald Duck. The First Order no longer uses clones, instead they were taking children at a very young age and training and programming them to become these new stormtroopers. Maybe they assumed they would be better shots, but I think they missed this as it appeared to me these new guys still can’t hit the broad side of a barn, as the joke has always been. Another old is new, is Kylo Ren, a Darth Vader wannabe. Like Anakin Skywalker and less like Vader, he acts out in spoiled child anger when certain things do not go his way, destroying equipment on the ship he is on. There were times I wanted to reach through the screen and smack him, tell him to grown up. More of this particular old is new, how they had made him look like Anakin. Can you not figure out who he might be? If anyone has read any of the old Star wars Expanded Universe books before Disney said those were gone to create their own universe after ROTJ, there is an ‘a-ha’ moment when Kylo’s is in fact told in the film. Kylo Ren is acted by Adam Driver. I don’t think I am ready to place him in the gallery of best evil rogues and villains at this time. For a Vader wannabe, he would need to wear Vader’s boots and cape and be the nasty, evilness that was Palpatine/Darth Sidious, the one I always felt was truly evil, as he had no qualms about anything he did.

Also old is the original main characters from the original Trilogy, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and yes, Luke. Han and Leia have been separated for a few years, due to personal tragedy in their lives concerning their son. Harrison Ford reminded me more of the older Indiana Jones from the fourth film than Han Solo. And that was fine with me. Chewie has been with Han. When both show up on the Millennium Falcon and Hans says, “Chewie, we’re home,” clapping filled the theater. We missed Han or someone like him in the Prequels and it appeared I was not the only one happy to have him and Chewbacca together and back! And Leia is now General Organa, in charge of the Resistance battling the First Order from taking over the New Republic. As Leia pointed out to Han, each had their own way of dealing with the aftermath of the disappearance of their son. Han his way and she hers, doing what she has done before, helping with the Resistance. As for Luke, he had been training the new Jedi order when terrible things happened, and he vanished in search of the first Jedi Temple. One of these terrible things by the way, concerned Han’s and Leia’s son Ben, whom Luke had been training, as the boy had the Force in him same as his mother and uncle, same as his grandfather.

New are new main heroes and heroines. There is Finn, one of the stormtroopers who could no longer stomach the violent things done in the name of the First Order. He helps Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Isaac), the pilot sent by Leia to get the map escape so he can get a pilot for a Tie Fighter and race away from this life he hates. He knows what they will do to a traitor and he is frightened. Finn is played by John Boyega and though he does fine, his acting of his character could have been better. After their tie fighter crashes on Jukka, a desert planet; he thinks Poe is dead. Then he comes to the small settlement and runs into a young woman, Rey, played by Daisy Ridley. She is kick ass. She can fight her own battles, she can fly, and is smart. I loved how Ms. Ridley portrays this character well. Be sure to watch this actress for things in the future, besides the new Star Wars films. Though there is a slight click between the two, it is not as believable as the one between Han, Leia and Luke. Their budding friendship is too fast. As for Poe, he did not die as Finn thought, and I think he might be the new “Han Solo” for this new saga, best pilot in the galaxy and cocky and brave. But again, that could be Finn, too. My favorite quote of his when Kylo Ren had captured him: "so...how does this go? Do you talk first? Do I talk first?" My favorite new character who can be considered old but new again is a new robot—BB-8. He is adorable, cute, funny and loyal. He moves fast and behaves a little like a puppy. His relationship with all the characters (especially with Poe) is heartwarming.

I have set up some spoilers, but not all. To give away all of the secrets of this film would ruin it for those who accidently read this, or want to anyway before seeing the movie. Plus some are still merely speculation as only a mere smidgen of Finn’s and Rey’s background are told or shown in the film. I will give fair forewarning that there is a shocker close to the end of the movie. Enough to catch me of guard. Though there is a logical reason behind it due to certain story concerning Return of the Jedi, still, it was heartbreaking. As for J.J. Abrams directing of the film, it is way better than Lucas handling of Episode 1-3. Is it a Lucas film? No, there is more of a sense of Spielberg touch in this. Now Abrams has been taken under the wing of Spielberg and you have seen it in a past film, Super 8. Personally, I would love to have seen Spielberg direct this film (he did those four Indiana Jones movies, remember?). It is said they even wanted him to direct this film. He instead suggested Abrams.

The action was great. Better placed here than in the two Star Trek films he directed. There are those moments of tribute to the original films, even in the storyline. Can it stand toe-to-toe with what I think is still the best Star Wars film, Empire Strikes Back? No, but it is many steps above the Prequels. And the ending, I won’t give away for those who haven’t seen it an accidently read this, keeping their sense of wonder and anticipation for this movie. It does have me wanting to see Episode VIII in 2017. And to see how the new director handles it.

Han Solo is in an Imperial jail, and a crime boss has the information that will free him. Enter Chewbacca, who pounds and pummels his way through the mission, accompanied by an untrusting ex-Imperial who can’t understand a word Chewie says. Not that words matter much to a Wookiee on a rampage!

Woo hoo! A Han Solo adventure! At least that's what went through my head when I saw the iconic anti-hero looking all roguish on the cover of the first issue. Turns out I was setting myself up for a little disappointment.

Taking place sometime between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, this four-part series starts off with a young rebel recruited by the Alliance and winds up hurled into the thick of things. During a botched meet up in a seedy tavern--sound familiar--he is rescued and whisked away by none other than Han Solo. No Chewie, Leia, or even Luke though, as everyone seems to be off leading their own little missions across the galaxy.

Anyway, it feels like the story is geared up to be a mentor/pupil kind of story until...well...the recruit flakes out and betrays Han, landing the smart-mouthed bad boy in a holding cell. Hunh. Didn't see that coming. I guess with the first issue ending like that, the second is bound to be about his breaking out or the rest of the Star Wars get-along gang coming to the rescue.

Nope.

As it turns out, the second issue focusing on another young member of the Alliance mixed up with a mission involving Princess Leia. That in turn leads into a story of another minor character playing tag-along with Chewbacca. I can only assume that the fourth and final issue with all some brand new nobody yipping at the heels of Luke Skywalker.

The story feels disjointed and aside from Leia going all Mission Impossible at one point during the second issue, there really isn't a whole lot of captivating action or anything. Actually the second issue is the strongest, with the most time afforded to getting to know Leia's impromptu underling. By the time the third issue ends, whatever suspense and intrigue that has been built is really insufficient for me to care what happens in the fourth.

The artwork is pretty darned good, with the depictions of Han and Leia being pretty spot on. And the random bit of scenery that harken to the original trilogy are there in full splendor. It just doesn't feel like a gripping story that I had hoped for when I first caught wind of it.

If you're a Star Wars fanatic, give the series and chance and you'll probably find more than enough to enjoy, so long as you don't have your hopes up for the spotlight shining on the legendary foursome. For casual fans like me or those uninitiated to the franchise, you can probably give this one a pass.
